Leopard 10.5.4 sharing with XP (read-only problems)

I have a Mac running 10.5.4 and a PC running XP Professional. Our Excel/Word documents are saved on the Mac and share with the PC. However, anytime we save a file when editing on the PC, it comes back as read-only on the Mac. Is there anyway to fix this? It also does it when creating a new file or folder - always comes up read-only. Thanks in advance for any help.

How did 10.5.4 get on the machine? If it was a gray disc, it may succeed in installing from another Mac, but it will never succeed in booting a G5:

Hi.
Having various problems with a USB stick that is formatted in EX-FAT.
It was working fine for a long period.
Yesterday I lent it to a friend to put some things on it.
Now when I try and work on it, I get messages like this.
Mac OS X can’t repair the disk “Disk Name"
You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can’t save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can.
It will also randomly eject the drive.
I have tried to reformat it multiple times, in mac and windows.
[I have never used it in windows previous to this occasion of needing to reformat].
In windows, it crashes the disk when I attempt to format with disk manager [I attempted this due to advice in an internet article].
In Mac , I cannot even try to reformat it, because for some reason the permissions on the USB stick have been set to "read only" and I cannot find any way to change them to read-write, or full permissions, or whatever is appropriate.
I have tried "erase" disk in disk utility. I know how to do a full reformat, but it simply will not allow me to do so.
All the options are greyed out.
Does anybody have any information or links they can point me to?
I've been searching around.

Start over:
select the drive > select the Partition tab > select 1 Partition
select Option > select GUID Partition Table > select OK
name it > click the Apply button > then lastly click Partition

Airport Extreme - Iomega Minimax 2tb File Sharing set as read only

HI,
I am using an Airport Extreme as home router and to share files in my wireless lan an Usb Iomega Minimax hard disk (not for Time Machine). I am having some issues with file sharing. My problem is that after using for a while, if I left it without activity for a couple of minutes then I can't write anything. Like if the hard disk put itselt in read only mode or there is an issue with permissions (Snow Leopard or Airport Extreme Itself). I try to Disconnect / Connect several times, but with no positive results. If I reboot the airport all back to normal operation.
The error message when I try to copy using an iMac (8.1) is:
The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50).
I can delete any file or browse and view photos or any file. All that I described were using Airport Extreme Firmware 7.5.2. I downgraded to 7.4.2 firmaware and having the same issue as results.
I have in home, the iMac, 3 PC's with Win Xp sp3, and one notebook with win 7 starter edition more, and I am having problems too. I was reading in the communities archive, I understand that exist some problem with file sharing, Any idea? I must to put the airport with 7.5.2. It's a dual band A1301, I think is the 1st generation router, not the latest.

I changed the Iomega Minimax disk, and put a Lacie Quadra D2 500gb that i have, and force it with the switch [off-auto - on] to always ON mode. The iomega minimax have a switch with ON - OFF position, the auto sleep mode cannot be disabled.The airdisk function perfect now. I can read, write, when I need.
The problem for me wa with Airport Extreme and the internal mount/umount command when disk's goes to sleep.

Sharing with others but only allow author and co-author to share the file with others

I have tested this option but have difficults to have the proper function.
If a co-author recieves a link to the document that the author has shared with him.
What is the mechanism that hinders this person to read that file that the co-author has send him.
I have been playing with myself in diffrent roles but running out of mail adresses and understanding.....
Please give an explanation.

In the sharing dialog (where you enter the email addresses) there is a link at the bottom that says "More options". This is where you can adjust the re-sharing options. Default is "Everyone the file is shared with can share it with others (at their own role or lower). The other option is "Only let co-authors share this file with others."
After the file has already been shared you can change the sharing options by doing the following:
Select the file in the Acrobat.com organizer (files tab)
Select share file (either in the lower left of the window or select Share Document from the drop down menu)
Click on Change options at the bottom of the menu that slides up from bottom left
Co-authors have the same rights as an author and there is currently not a setting to prevent co-authors from sharing. If they do not need to have the same rights as an author, try changing them to a reviewer or reader and changing the share option to "Only let co-authors share this file with others."

Using iTunes Library with a read-only account...

Hi! I use my HD connected to my AEBS and to create some accounts in which people can use information on the shared folder that is created when the account preference is chosen. I later copied my iTunes library in the same folder so that everybody had access to it. Most of the users I created have restricted access (meaning read-only access). The ones that have full acces had no problem but the ones that have read-only access, when they try to choose the iTunes library, recieve a message saying "The folder "iTunes" is in a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder.". iTunes was NOT built for multi-user "write" access. Allowing write access to more than one user of iTunes "concurrently" is a recipe for disaster: sooner or later your iTunes database will get corrupted. You have been warned.

Sharing & permissions suddenly read only on files and folders

Almost all folders and files including home folder have suddenly had their sharing and permissions privileges switched to read only
No indication of why this happened. Tedious to go through each item, enter password, add parties and change to read and write.
Is there a quick fix?

Run Verify Disk in Disk Utility.
If it's just your home folder where this is happening, reset home folder permissions.

Read-only problem with sun one

i have mounted yestarday a file in which i have created an ejb call Client. Today i have unmounted the file with the ejb Client and i have mounted an other file in which i have created an ejb called Client. Now i can't no more manipulate the first ejb and the second ejb (adding method for example). The error message is: the ejb is read-only !
I don't know if this is a bug or a protection but how i can desctivate that please ?

ok i find it. There was hidden mounted jar in the
option of filesystem ... why, i don't know exaclty at
this moment but now it's ok. If somebody knows
something about that.

[Solved]please help with btrfs read only filesystem

Yesterday I deleted a snapshot using the command
sudo btrfs subvolume delete /snapshot-2014-**-**
in which the snapshot-... is a snapshot I created eariler. But a few hours later I suddenly found that the file system became read-only. I reboot and the message stuck at mounting /dev/sda1 and failed, into an emergency shell, saying something like "no subvolume is find". I tried to mount /dev/sda1 using a rescue usb stick but still failed...
I have been using the same command to create and delete snapshots for several months without problem, but this time... I don't know what was I doing wrong, maybe I mistyped something this time?
So... How could I recovery the filesystem? I've searched for a bit but cannot find any satisfied result.
EDIT: I re-installed the system.

Problems with a read only fla file.

Hello,
I need help finding out why some of my .fla file will not save as the same name. When I try to save it says "Cannot save file! This file may be read-only or is open in another application. Save using a different name or close the file and try again." I did evetyrhing it says and it still does not work, does anyone know what the problem is?

I'm on a Mac (OS X 10.6.7) and using Flash pro CS5 (and Flash Builder). I started to get a warning in Flash about jagged fonts. I used Mac's font book to validate and clean up my fonts. After that, whenever I open this one FLA, it ask me to map some fonts, which I did, then it opens. After opening, the Flash IDE becomes unusable, most of the text in the palletes disapear and I can not tell what most things are. I also tried setting the fonts to defaults, same issue, although that did fix the issued for half day, it's now not working, and often crashes when I just click on a text field. I started my Mac up in safe mode, the FLA does work fine in Safe Mode, but I can't remap the fonts 'cause all none system fonts are dissabled in safe mode.
I was getting a lot of crashes when trying to use Mac's Font Book. After validating fonts, opting to remove bad fonts would crash font book. It took about two hours to clean up my fonts. At least I think they are good now...
I think I'm going to go through every text field in the FLA in safe mode and change them to a system font (and write down what font I wanted the text field to be), then restart the Mac in normal mode and see if I can remap the fonts in the Fla. Unfortunetly this Fla is huge with many text fields : (

Report with both read-only and uploadable features

Client would like to use one report as both an uploadable report and as a read-only report, depending on user.
Is there any way to have a report which gets security based on the user making the request, say, by hiding the upload button for the user without the rights to it, or by validating before the upload occurs?

ThisWorkbook.InterlaceSession.Username ---> This will return who is logged in.
Similarly you also have other properties like
ThisWorkbook.InterlaceSession.IsAdmin
ThisWorkbook.InterlaceSession.IsOwner
ThisWorkbook.InterlaceSession.IsParticipant
ThisWorkbook.InterlaceSession.IsApprover
Based on these you should be able hide update changes button with simple VB code.

DFSR Read-Only - Problems with Disaster Recovery?

Hi guys,
I have (2) 2008 R2 file servers. One is production and one is for DR. First, I have to make sure that the DR server never writes back to production in any situation. The means that if the (2) servers stop communicating with each other
and data is deleted off the production server, the read-only DR server does not put deleted files back onto the production server when connection is restored, etc. It sounds like I am covered there.
The question is what happens if production server crashes and I now want to change the DR server to production? Does the data on the D/R member still have the same NTFS permissions? It sounds like it does, but would I then just go into dfsmgmt.msc
and mark the replicated folder as read-write, force AD replication, run a dfsrdiag pollad, and then redirect the users to the DR server? I know the content may not be 100%, but the back-up plan has always been to disablestrictnamechecking, change
the host record for the production server to the IP address of the DR server, and redirect users there for 99% of the data. I think that files that were open on the production server that crashed would not have had their updates replicated across.
Let me know if that would work from the DFS side of things

An RW replicated folder can be converted to an RO replicated folder (and back) “on the fly”.
Converting will cause a non-authoritative sync to occur on the replicated folder for the server being altered.

ODC Import Server - Working with emailed read only files

When running the ODC import server as a service or as an application we sometimes get users that send us emails with "read only" attachements. ODC will get stuck on these emails becasue excel will prompt to open the read only file.
Is there a way we can easily get around this problem? Is there an ODC setting or an Excel setting that I can use to always open all excel documents?

You are missing an indexing step, which can't be done automatically without the Recognition server (or manual indexing). ODC manual explains briefly on the 34th page:
Import Server, which imports images and other electronic documents directly into Capture from sources such as email, FTP sites, network folders, list files, and fax providers. As images and electronic documents are imported, they are converted into Capture batches where they can be indexed using Index or Recognition Server and then committed.
I use import server only for importing network folder scans and assigning them to the appropriate batch for manual indexing, so can't give you an elaborated advice.

Why this occurs only the tablespaces are read-only?

yesterday we got this error again(in fact twice) and we were able to get the trace file. It says this is NOT oracle error. i was wrong in suspecting Oracle. This is the trace file details. i dont know how to debug this. Any help appreciated.

Read-only problem

I'm completely new to jdeveloper (v 9.0.3.5) with the OA extension components. I'm having problems when I have copied the various xml & java class files from the server to my local PC, replicating the structure on the server. When I then add these into my project the BC come in as read-only, so do all the files within the BC. If I create a new BC, this is fine and fully editable. I am obviously missing a trick here. Can anyone shed any light on this?

1. Select the project folder in the exporer and set the "Read-Only" proprty to false.

Read-Only Problem during Boot

Hi,
I tried to update my system today, like every week, with the standard command pacman -Syu. After installing all updates, my window manager (gnome3) crashed and i tried to restart my System. After the grub window appeared and I choosed my kernel the normal startup commands are shown until the Arch prompt appeared. The one where Arch Linux tried to start all relevant processes. After that there are only mistakes. All startup processes are busy or failing. The only message i get is, that the filesystem, i think thats the root partition (ext4), is read-only or another error: some files for startup cannot be created because they already exist.
Getting to console is also impossible, because the system tries to start virtualbox additions, with an funny message, that it is busy and tries it again in 5 min (infinity loop). But shidt happens. I have read in another post that I can try another Linux System, mount my root partition and do an
fsck /dev/sda3 -p or -f
. But it says that all is clean (sda3 is root and sda1 is /boot). The filesystem is ext4, so i tried also fsck.ext4, but it also say all is clean.
After another boot i stoped at the position, where the fist error occur.
Mounting Local Filesystems
/etc/rc.sysinit: line 285: /etc/mtab: Read-only file System
next one:
Activating Swap
/bin/rm: cannot remove '/etc/localtime': Read-only file system
removing leftover Files
/usr/bin/find: cannot delete 'var/run/cups.pid': Read-only file system
After that message there are also al lot of analog errors.
I have no other idea than an dirty filesystem. Is there another possibility to rescue my system without an fresh install. Im sorry but i cannot log any messages at that state of boot. So it is not easy to get better informations about special error codes.
I have forget to give you some informations about my stats:
- actual stable arch kernel 2.6.38
- gnome 3
- thinkpad t400

With udev 168-1 I obtain this message during boot:

but fsck run manually says it's all clean.
I have to remount rw / partition and manually mount all the other partition, then I can switch to runlevel 3.
With udev 167-2 (and prior) I can boot without any problems.
I'm not sure it's a problem from udev, but downgrading it works for me.
