Leopard 10.5 & Windows Vista

Hey folks. There's no other forum for me to post a question like this, so I figured this is the best place to do it.
I've been a Mac user for the last 14 years, but I've finally come to the point where I need to migrate from a Mac to a PC. The impetus for this decision is mainly due to my irritation at the lack of hardware options for Mac users when things go bad. Case in point: the ATI X1990XT graphics option for version 1 Mac Pro users; the card is flawed, period. Once the nVidia 8800GT is released for version 1 users, it's still just one option. If that card has a fatal flaw like the X1900, then we're left with no other viable options. At this juncture, my Mac crashes on a daily basis due to my graphics card, and the only option I have is to purchase a new mac or downgrade my graphics card. I've installed PCI fan cards in my Mac, but to no avail - not to mention the difficulty in installing them because we don't have any available standard power plugs (I had to remove an optical drive to free one up). That still didn't work; the card just runs to hot.
So, my question. Does anyone have any experience migrating information from their 10.5 Mac to a Windows Vista machine? If so, I'd appreciate your input. I'm going to the Windows machine not because the operating system is better, but simply because of the vast amount of hardware options available to me. If one critical component is bad, I can replace it quickly and cheaply - and continue computing. That's important to me. And, /gasp, Vista isn't half bad. It's a pleasure to use, compared to XP.

Yes, people use Mac Pro to run Vista. Lots of threads on installing 64-bit Ultimate, graphics, etc.

You still need one graphics card that has EFI32 ROMs so you can get video out during early boot process though.
The Apple Radeon 2600 along with a PC card might work better.

I used MacFUSE 3G to write to NTFS partition.

One drive for OS X. Another drive as MBR for Vista OS and 3rd for data.
Some file name characters are not valid on NTFS and can cause problems so you may find you have to rename file names.
When you remove your x1900, and clean out the dust built up that clogs the intacks, along with boosting the system fans, it should work for about 3 months before needing to clean out again.
As for aux pcie power - ATI sells one for $19 or WELOVEMACS has one also. I wouldn't use a PCI card fan, just smcFanControl 2.1.2 to run the fans at 750-1000 rpm. And there are some replacement X1900 coolers and fans.

Lion's Boot Camp Assistant 4.x should have downloaded Apple drivers as part of also partitioning.
You need Apple drivers. And you then need to add on your own audio driver.
You can run Assistant at any time to download and save a set of drivers.

Windows Vista not working correctly with Leopard 10.5

I just updated my MacBook Pro 17" by installing Leopard 10.5xx (erased and installed), then used BootCamp to partition disk and install Windows Vista. In Windows, my volume control is on, but no sound. I just got the error, "This problem was caused by a compatibility issue between Intel 82801GBM (ICH7-M) LPC Interface Controller - 27B9 and Windows Vista. Intel 82801GBM (ICH7-M) LPC Interface Controller - 27B9 was created by Intel Corporation and is distributed by Apple Inc.."
I am having problems with drivers, and as I'm a new user to Mac/Windows, so I don't even know how to identify which drivers (on Leopard installation disk)I need. In Windows Device Manager I have something called "Human Interface" that needs a driver . . . but my computer can't find it on my Mac or on the disk.
I purchased extended AppleCare warranty, but don't know how to use it, and my 90 days is up so I can't call. Is this warranty strictly for hardware? I don't understand how to get the support/how to information I need; I'm a Windows user and find Apple's support confusing and indirect.

sorry, can't help, but you're definitely in the wrong forum. this is about mac os SERVER (not client) and your problem is related to either the hwardware you use or bootcamp.

Leopard, external USB HD, Windows Vista

I have a G4 laptop running Leopard.
After reformatting my external hard drive to MS-DOS FAT 32, it does not appear at all in Windows Vista.
What else can I do to fix this problem?

refering to my first post I still beleieve that the problem results from the used partition scheme on the external HD and not from the used file system.
Check with Disk Utility in OSX whether your external HD uses APM (Apple Partition Map) or not.
If it is APM then repartitioning the external HD and using MBR (Master Boot Record) as partition scheme and MS-DOS FAT32 as file system should enable the external HD to be useable from both Vista and your G4.
Second alternative would be to connect the external HD to the Vista PC and repartition it there also using MBR.
But since Windows cannot format partitions bigger than 32GB with FAT32 you have to use a third-party tool like this http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm to do the formating (not the partitioning).
Btw.: there is no such thing as FAT64 only exFAT which is supposed to be mainly used with Flash-drives.
Secondly, be aware that FAT32 has a built-in single-file size limitation of 4GB.

A very interesting NOTE to this thread. In order to try and get the "ignore permissions" box to show up in GET INFO (so I could execute Matt the Magician's solution to file sharing issues)-- I ran the terminal command for disabling ACLs on my internal HD / start up disk (as indicated in the linked thread to BDAqua's forum).
Although I understand that this was useless for disabling permissions on the start up disk (as everyone here pointed out) and allowing me to see the "ignore permissions" check box - somehow it did seem to fix my file sharing problem...and that was the root problem I wanted solved in the first place! After doing the terminal command and a quick reboot, I went in and tested file sharing on the chosen directory and I can create new files or work from existing files in the directory, with both users being able to modify / and save from both machines and each machine sees the revisions and can build from them. Bottom line - I'm stoked and want to thank everyone for their help.
The only other tweak I made was going over to my wife's machine and instead of using her log in / password, I just used my name and password to connect to my main machine that was sharing directories. Maybe that's what fixed the problem or the ACL disable but either way...I'm up and running the way I want to be.
Hope this thread helps anyone else who has these file sharing / permissions issues with Leopard. Especially for anyone wanting to do such a simple file sharing set up between 2 computers. I wish I understood exactly which tweak fixed the problem, but at least it works the way I want now.

Comparing OS X Leopard to Windows Vista...

I saw Windows Vista for the first time this weekend and while the first thing I noticed was that many of the features were taken straight from Mac (ex: Expose or the Apple+Tab feature) there was one thing that I noticed Vista had, that Mac did not - and it surprised me.

Well... being a visual person, I was quite drawn to this feature - it was pleasing to the eye, and I thought "How cool would my Mac desktop look with this feature!"
So I was wondering - is there anything on the Mac that can set up application windows similarly to the ones on Windows Vista?

No worries though - I'm still Mac through and through lol - I enjoy not having to worry too much about viruses or bugs
I have both Leopard and Vista 64-bit Ultimate on this MBP. Both work fine. I tend to see beyond the desktop, being a *nixer at heart, but I have none of the complaints with either OS that many others report. In fact Apple does not yet support the 64-bit Vista, but it runs fine just the same after dl-ing some drivers directly from the manufacturers.

Will Boot Camp in leopard work with 64 bit Windows Vista Ultimate?

I installed Boot Camp beta in Tiger. Then I installed the 64 bit version of windows Vista Ultimate. Many drivers were not installed such as the keyboard mapping driver. I bought Leopard. Should the version of Boot Camp in Leopard work with the 64 bit Windows Vista Ultimate or would I probably encounter the same driver problems? Should I delete the Windows partition before upgrading to Leopard and then install the 32 bit version of Windows Vista Ultimate for all the drivers to work properly?
Please advise what to do.

Hi,
since the 'new' BootCamp 2.0 also only includes Driver support for the 32-bit Windows versions, you will get a 2nd Encounter.
Is there a specific reason for you to use the 64-bit versions, apart from maybe the 4GB RAM 'issue' ?
Installing the 32-bit version and then the Drivers from the OSX DVD should give you all the drivers needed.

Just was wondering some things about the title up there. In Leopard, will we be able to install another OS like vista via bootcamp without the full version of it (in other words with an upgrade version)? Something else I'd like to ask is what about Vista Ultimate, will it be compatible with the iMac...what I mean is, I hear most computers now a days are not compatible with ultimate therefore you have to buy a new darn computer just to run it. So just wondering, but to your knowledge, is it compatible? Also, when exactly is Leopard due out? Thank you for your time.

Well, all they ask for in the upgrade process is proof of you having a lower version of windows, which I have. But with bootcamp, there is no way to get the install disc out of the drive to put in the other disc to prove that I am legal as far as the upgrade is concerned.

I got a mac because I was tired of all the crap I had put up with on a pc for the last 20+ years. But I had to be honest with myself and admit that there are just certain things that cannot be done with a mac but they can be done on a pc. I'm not going to spend any more money on any pc's. I would just like to be able to run windows vista on my mac. Because the iMac has the new intel core 2 duo in them, vista should work fairly well in it. I hear that that is the only thing stopping me from running it on this pc of mine. The pentiums are not x64 bit.

Yes you will need to install the apple drivers for win vista. When you boot from a cold start, have you tried holding down the option key to choose which OS to boot from? If you have then, you could try going into startup options from the mac side and choose win vista if it appears. That could be risky though, as you mentioned you do not have the mac install disk. If problems arise you may need the mac install disk to undo the changes.

Limewire has not updated their software for Leopard. Currently only runs on 10.4.X (Tiger) according to their website.

Chkdsk run everytime I start Windows Vista under Bootcamp in Snow Leopard

I have Windows Vista 32 bits installed on bootcamp partition and it work fine in 10.5.
Now I have upgrade my MBP (early 2008) to Snow Leopard, and upgrade WIndows Bootcamp drivers to version 3.0 from Snow Leopard DVD. Both installation were completed and run fine.
The problem I have now is: Whenever I used Mac OS, shut down, then restart the WIndows Vista by pressing Option key at Macbook Pro startup, Chkdsk will run evry time, checking integrity of the Windows boot partition. I have to wait for more than 20 minutes before Chkdsk fix all errors, then reboot, and press Options key to get back into WIndows Vista without Chkdsk running.
When I shut down Windows, and restart without goinb into Snow Leoprad, the boot process go OK without Chkdsk running.
But whenever I shut fown Winodws and use Snow Leopard, then get back in to startup Windows, Chdsk run again. This is very annoyingm, and never occured in 10.5
During Chkdsk session, the following errors occured and being fixed:
Deleting index entry ._501 in index $I30 of file 9028
Deleting index entry 501 in index $I30 of file 9028
and after all process finished, Chkdsk stated that: There is a blank space that allocated as used, and has been fixed.
Can any friend advise me what cause this problem? and How to correct it?
I understanfd that the ._501 is in .Trashes folder on Windows partiton. It must be altered wwhen I use Snow Leopard, and must have to do with Trash in Mac OSX 10.6.

I had the same problem and was reasonably confident that the disc was actually okay and did not benefit from repeated checking. You can instruct Windows on boot to ignore a drive by typing in the following command after boot into a command window chkntfs /x c:
In the case above c: is the drive letter Windows is booting to. If there really is a serious issue that chkdsk is identifying and trying to fix for you this may not be the way to go. However if this helps you can always run chkdsk manually from time to time to verify that the disc is still okay.
SL also created this problem for me. After that and a host of other issues that I did not have the time or patience to to battle with I reinstalled Leopard and have been happy with the decision.

I replaced my hard drive with a 3tb Seagate and partitioned the hard drive and installed Snow leopard and then partitioned the hard drive with bootcamp and went to install windows vista and got the error message that windows vista cannot be installed because of the gpt partition. Help.

sounds like you have a 2nd hard drive.
Also, you may run into 3TB issue with MBR. The boot partiton volume has to reside totally below 2.2TB so you would need to leave .8TB free. I think.
have an SSD and hard drive, both? during install you can't have another drive with GPT so you can't have OS X or GUID data drive present. During install.

Windows Vista won't boot in Snow Leopard

Hi everyone
I tried to boot into my Windows Vista Boot Camp partition today and it wouldn't start. After holding down the option key like usual, it just sat there with a white screen. No Apple logo. No partitions to click on like usual. Then my Mac ran incredibly slow and was glitchy. What happened to Windows? Please help.

You're very welcome.
I always leave the boot order BIOS setting to boot from the HDD first so as to shave off a few microseconds from the boot time.
When I need to boot from another device such as a DVD in your case, I turn on the PC, at the beginning of the HP welcome screen, I tap the F9 key to get the one-time boot menu.
I select the DVD drive from the list. Then I hit the button on the drive to open the drive, pop the bootable DVD in, close the tray, wait a second or so and then hit the enter key.
After I hit the enter key, watch the sreen for a message that states in substance...attempting to boot from DVD...press any key to boot from DVD...
I press any key and the PC boots from the DVD and off I go...

Now remember...making that file is pretty easy, but only if you read both my notes and the guy that wrote the procedure's steps carefully.
There have been a few forum members that I have had to coach during the process, because they were following that guy's every step to the letter, and as I pointed out, there is only one mistake on his first screen shot...but that one mistake is all it takes to stop you cold.
Disregard the part of the text under the first screen shot about "extract the files to the Vista folder."
The files were already extracted to that Vista folder when you ran the X14.exe file by reading the text on top of the first screen shot.
You get past that, and you're home free.

ICloud available for Windows Vista, but not Snow Leopard???

I have Multipal Macs with the Core Duo chipset that can not run LION and no $$$$ to upgrade hardware right now.
WHY does Windows VISTA get iCloud suport but I who can't upgrade to LION do not?
I understand leaving out Leaopard, but SNOW too?

With the removal of Rosetta in Lion and the requirement for Lion in order to use iCloud Macs are no longer an option for poeple that need to be able to run older applications.
Many places bought Macs because they could run just about anything, Windows, Linux, PPC software, even Classic applications via Sheepshaver.
The big issue is the loss of being able to run PPC applications. Freehand, Pagemaker, Framemaker, Quicken to name just a few applications that will never be ported. People and businesses have huge amounts of documents in these formats. It's not stuff that is used regularly but it is files that need to be accessed and sometimes modified.
All these applications can run on a modern Windows machine as can iCloud but not on a Mac running Lion.
While I'm complaining... I setup a bunch of Macs, iOS devices and some PCs all on iCloud today. The loss of email account syncing meant I had to spend hours setting up email on each machine ( each device had just under a dozen accounts on it) instead of just one machine and having it propagate to all the other devices. Going to be real fun trying to keep email rules in sync on all the Macs.

Dual booting with Windows Vista/OSX 10.5 Leopard with 2 GPU's?

Can I install a Nvidia GTX280 graphics card in a Mac Pro and use it to play games when booted into Windows Vista and use the included ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT card for booting into OSX? Or is this not possible? Is there any other way to install a GTX 280 card in a Mac? I would really love to buy a Mac Pro but need to be able to install a GTX 280 in it to be able to play games on higher settings than any of the available Apple supported cards.
I know this question may have been asked before so I am apologizing in advance...
