Leopard & AD Pasword Expiriation/Changes

Just an FYI:
As you know, in 10.4 (Tiger), Mac users who were bound to Active Directory 2003 domain would get prompted at the Login Window of AD password related policies and events (i.e.; "Your password will expire in 3 days..." etc), and allow users to change their domain password as needed.
In 10.5.1, Mac users who are bound to Active Directory are never prompted about things such as password expiration etc. The only way my Mac users know of this AD information is if they happen to either
1) Have a Windows PC as well as a Mac.
or
2) They have Entourage 2004. Entourage 2004 will inform users of a future password expiration date, but it wont allow them to *do anything* about it (i.e.; You can not change your AD password from Entourage 2004 etc)
This is a major bug and/or a flaw. We will have 200+ Leopard Macs in Q1. Our company has a frequent password change policy. It will cause major problems.
Anyone else notice this in 10.5?

Yes, I noticed this as well. If your password expires over night, the login window will prompt you to create a new password the next time you log in. However, if you're already logged in when your password expires, it appears as if thing have suddenly broken. I'm not sure if we're allowed to talk about it yet after beta testing, but the dialog box you get in Entourage 2008 about your expiring password is even less help.
In addition, you need to be an administrator user to add printers. These two issues will prevent us from rolling out Leopard to the existing Macs and prevent us from putting new Macs out on desks. As the administrator, I can't be expected to add printers for all 300 Macs, there'd have to be a second me!
Are you a member of the Apple Developer Connection? If not, there is a free type of account that gives you access to Apple's official bug reporting tool. Since this is a feature that used to work in Mac OS X 10.4.x, I assume it's a "bug" now that it's "broken". The more people who report it, the better chance Apple will address this with an update.

  • How do i change my name in Leopard so that it changes it everywhere?

When first configuring my new MacBook Pro, it asked me for my name and i put in my First and Last name (so that it registers it correctly), but now every time i want to install something or it asks for a name, Leopard automatically places my first and last name into the fields (sometimes i can't even changed it).
I'm wondering how i am able to do so, i just want to use my first name, so that my last name is no longer on the system.
    Thanks.
    Saeid.
Ps. I have gone into account, and just set my first name, but still i see my whole name under networks (when selecting sharing)

After you changed your account name, all of the password boxes only show your first name, right? To fix the networking issue, open System Preferences and go to the Sharing Tab. Change the computer name at the top from John Doe's Computer to whatever you want. Hope this helps!

  • Snow Leopard contact sheet layout changes possible?

Unable to change contact sheet layout to suit my needs. E.g. I want 6 photos per page in two columns. The default option for two columns seems to be 2 or 4 photos/page. Ask for six and it creates two pages. The layout within the contact sheet seems to have lost some of the flexibility that OSX Leopard had. Is there something that I am overlooking?

    Thanks for your response.
This what I do without getting the results I would like for 8.5x11 paper:
    1. I select 6 photos
    2. Hit "Print"
    3. Select "Contact Sheet" - the 6 photos are shown at the top of the 'page' in two rows.
    4. Select "Customize"
    5. Select "2 columns" (in the hope of getting the 6 photos arranged on one sheet - with the sheet in portrait format. Instead I get 4 photos on one sheet and lots of blank space.
    6. Select "Layout" icon. I see a sheet with 12 rectangles and a "1" in the margin. I am unable to make changes to the layout as shown.
Hopefully I have described my situation well enough for you.
    Thanks

  • Reinstalling Leopard without removing or changing windows partition

I am giving my mom my iMac and I would like to remove all my files and applications, I think the best way to do this is to reinstall Leopard but I need to keep the windows partition intact. The problem is that I no longer have the Windows install disc (I do have the serial number though).
    How do I reinstall Leopard?

Ok, thanks Niel. I also found an answer here http://www.brighthub.com/computing/mac-platform/articles/48174.aspx except I held option instead of c

  • Finder view favorites there is "today", "Yesterday" etc no more available (like in snow leopard), how I can change it back?

In snow leopard there was in the start view of finder (I think it was in favorites) a buttom like "today", "yesterday" etc. when you use the buttom, finder has showed all your files which you have opened the whole day (today buttom). So it was easy when you have to send an mail or must work again on a file to find it without go completely step by step through the finder.
I tried to setting "all my files" to show me the last files but this view does not show all files (only older than 2 ours) - so it is not "up to date".
What can I do to get a solution of my problem?
    Thanks.

They were only Smart Folders so you can easily create a new Smart Folder in Finder.
    Something like this?
Play around with the options to see exactly what you want to see.

  • Trouble with HP Photosmart 2710 after Snow Leopard installation

I recently upgraded my Mac desktop and laptop to Snow Leopard. After installing this on the Mac I was unable to scan so I re-installed HP software. This solved the scanning issue but now I can't print, getting a message saying "Software not fully installed". I re-installed from disk and then tried again as a download but still have same problem.
On the Laptop, (also upgraded to Snow Leopard) I made no changes to the printer installation and I can still print but I can't scan. Help please!

Try removing the printer from the list first, then reinstall the drivers.

  • Who can solve Leopards  biggest bug?

All these topics are connected the same bug in Leopard mail. Password changes to apop.
" Mail keeps asking for password

I have been dealing with the matter since december. The problem also has been seen in Verizon and Daemon pop accounts.
In the there have been many suggsestions to solutions.
But so far nobody has been able to find a solution to why the mail settings changes from passwords to Apop and you are prompted for a apop password.
Apple has not fixed this bug and so far none here.
Is there somebody outhere who is able to fix that bug that Apple failed to fix?

Ummm...the best thing to do is not setup your Keychain password to be accepted once. When asked to accept your keychain, use the Always button.
Applications -> Utilities -> Keychain Access application has the option to repair the keychain from its menu. Use that to repair your Mail keychain.
If you are using any cache cleaning applications quit using them. They conflict with many an application and can cause damaged cache files, which among them are Mail's own:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1322708&tstart=10
Repair permissions with Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility, and not some third party utility.
If you aren't having any mail issues, don't create them by trying anything rash.
If your system is functional, back it up before doing anything else, and after saving any important files, so that if you add something to your system and it becomes malfunctioning, you can restore your backup. See my FAQ* on backing up:

  • Dual boot Snow Leopard and Mavericks or newer

I have a late 2008 Mac Pro running Snow Leopard in order to use my older editing software.   I would like to dual
boot with a newer operating system on another partition.  Feel really behind the times.
I am hoping I can do this but do not know just how to go about it and maintain my current setup on one
partitions.   Do not know that if I try to upgrade operating systems I will be able to direct the new operating
system upgrade to be on the other partition.  I know how to create the new partition, just not how to get
a newer operating system on it.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
    Kirk

Start by creating a new partition on your hard drive using Disk Utility. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Do not install it on your Snow Leopard partition. Instead change the destination to your new volume.
To resize the drive do the following:
    1. Open Disk Utility and select the drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list.
    2. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.

  • HELP! Changing Standalone to OD Master has locked out ALL accounts

In the course of attempting to get iCal server running on my Leopard Server install, I changed the OD role from Standalone to OD Client, pointed to a 10.4.11 OD Master running on the LAN.
When I discovered that 10.4 will not allow the "Enable Calendaring" option via WGM, I changed the iCal/Web/Mail server to OD Master, setup a directory admin, via the assistant, and then attempted to login via WGM.
WGM said something to the effect that I wasn't authorized on the server, using the OD admin user/pass. So, I tried my locally created admin, which also was rejected. Then, I tried using ARD, which now was showing "Access Denied" in the computer list.
I physically accessed the machine, where WGM and Server Admin were rejecting my logins, local and OD Admin. I restarted and the machine came up to the login window, rather than using the auto-login account that is necessitated by my backup software and DNS update. Trying all the local admin login/passes failed, as did the local standard accounts. The only successful login was via root, which isn't making me feel very good.
Logged in as root, I re-selected standalone and restarted, with no positive results. As root, I can see all the local users in WGM, but I cannot change their passwords, I get:
In order to set the password of a a user with an Open Directory Password, your own password type must be Open Directory. Administrators with other password types cannot set the password of a user with an Open Directory password.-- (That's from the 501 user.)
All of my locally-created users show User Password Type(s) of : Open Directory (greyed out) and I cannot change them to Shadow Passwords. I get an "Unexpected Error" that reads: Error of type eDSAuthMethodNotSupported (-14091) on line 2138 of /SourceCache/WorkgroupManager/WorkgroupManager-319.1.1/Plugins/UserAccounts/Use rAdvancedPluginView.mm That location doesn't exist on the drive.
The accounts pane does not allow me to reset the passwords of the users.
The server is running 10.5.4 Intel, upgraded from 10.4.11 PPC (I know, I should have known better, but...) a few months back, without any issues. The users were all created prior to the update (in some cases, prior to 10.4).
I've tried deleting one user, a mail-only account, without a home folder, which resulted in losing the IMAP store. (Ugh. Thankfully, I religiously back-up.) I tried the instructions here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1543?viewlocale=en_US (found via: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1620296&tstart=45 ) which seems to have changed the user's password from OD to Shadow, but I've not had the chance to restart, as I'm in the middle of restoring the latest incremental backup to a bootable volume. I did try logging in via the terminal with that user and got: PAM Error (line 396): Cannot make/remove an entry for the specified session
Don't worry... that dull, repetitive Thunck! sound is just me hitting my head on the desk over and over, while DataBackup writes to a spare drive. Any suggestions in the meantime?

Probably a stupid suggestion, but open Directory access (can't remember if they changed the name now... I'm sitting at home) and check to see if the server is still bound to the OD master (from when you pointed it there in step 1).
There are some 'interesting' features when running 10.4 OD and touching it with a 10.5 server/util; I learnt the hard way!
Personally, I would ensure your backup is functioning, do a image of the server HD and reinstall 10.5 server from scratch. It should also rid you of any 10.4->10.5 upgrade bugs which may be lurking in the background...

  • Snow Leopard and Airport...not doing so well altogether.

I upgraded from 10.5.6 or whatever it was in June when I left...when I came back my internet was dropping a little bit here and there...and when I upgraded to Snow Leopard and the install and reboot was all over, Airport dropped my internet so quickly. Rebooted my computer, reinstalled snow leopard, turned off airport, changed the IP, I believe I did everything I could to do get the internet to work.
Right now is weird because this is one of the times where it dropped, maintained, dropped and maintained again. As Im speaking it just dropped...and came back up. Im so sick of this. My sister doesnt have the same problem at all. ****! She can get on to the cisco clean access agent, and snow leopard isnt compatabile with that yet so I cant get on to the internet at school. I dont care about the internet at school..I need the internet at home more than at school.
So in short, can you guys tell me what steps to do that will get my internet to drop less..to mainly be like my sisters where she isnt ******** about it 24/7. She does NOT have Snow Leopard but 10.5.6 OSX or whatever it is now. A key note is that I dont have my OSX install cd's from the original 10.5.2 when I got my MBP, and I didnt set up time machine before I redid it. So Im stuck with this new OS. And you might say its the router or whatever but I swear to god its not, its my computer. I just need to know what I can do that can get my internet so it doesnt drop!!! Thanks guys!

I have a Mini and am experiencing the same. Started with wireless dropping every 20 minutes or so. Then it couldn't find signal so I moved my Time Capsule closer. I'm watching my transmit rate drop every few minutes from 58, then 24, then 18, then 12, now 1. The icon in the status menu doesn't change though. According to that icon I'm getting 4 full bars of signal. If I Option+right click then I see that I'm only at 1

  • Pages 4.2 update doesn't run with Snow Leopard

I keep both Montain Lion and Snow Leopard on the same computer, different partitions. After upgrading Pages this week, it no longer runs under Snow Leopard.  The icon changes and a launch message says I can't use this version with Snow Leopard. It looks like this is true of all the iWorks apps. This is the first time I recall the iWorks suite not being backwards compatible.
My advice is to keep a backup copy or older iWorks releases if you need to run Snow Leopard. The App store only has the Mountain Lion version so I can't just download the SnowLeopard compatible version.

The same exact thing happened to me. I have a thread on this same issue but no one has responded. Did you find a way around this?

  • How to make a permanent change to AW margins

I had to do a erase and re-install for leopard.
I had changed the margins so that they were a permanent change but the re-install brought be back to the original default settings.
I can not find any notes how I did it, and there is nothing under margins in a "missing manual' that mentions it.
Can someone remind me of the way to make the change permanently,
obviously I can do it each time using document but its annoying.

    Hi Greg,
    You wrote:
+My template is: Appleworks WP Options.cwk (WP) as a header,+
By the above, I assume you mean that when you open the 'template' in AppleWorks, the document's Title Bar says "AppleWorks WP Options.cwk (WP)". This would indicate that you saved the file as a document rather than a template. A template would open as "untitled (WP)".
+I can not tell what the template enclosed box (starting points) says : Appleworks WP.+
I don't know what you mean by "the template enclosed box (starting points)".
I tried the get info Command + i , but the info window would not appear.
I did it with a click for the new template and tried clicking info with a new page,
Where were you when you did this? From your description above, you seem to be in AppleWorks, with a document open.
Get Info is a menu item in the Finder's File menu. In the Finder, command-I is a keyboard shortcut for the File > Get info... menu item. That menu item is not available in any ot the AppleWorks modes.
Command-I will produce a Get Info window only if you are in the Finder (the first three items in the Menu Bar will be  Finder File), and have selected a file's icon icon by clicking on it once. When you have selected a file you can go to the File Menu and choose Get Info..., or you can press command-I.
+So obviously I need to convert it to .cws. How do I change from cwk to cws?+
The easiest way is probably to delete the existing file, then recreate the template.
Quit AppleWorks, go to the Finder, Locate and Delete the file.
Launch AppleWorks, Open a new word processor document, Set the margins (and make any other settings that you want as default values in new word processor documents), then go File > Save as...
In the Save as dialogue, click the Template radio button at the bottom right of the dialogue window.
Change the document name from untitled.cws to AppleWorks WP Options.cws
(Appleworks will have changed the .cwk suffix to .cws when you clicked the Template button. The application will also have navigated to the Templates folder, which is where this template must be saved to work correctly.)
    Check that;
—the file name is correct ( AppleWorks WP Options.cws )
—you are in the Templates folder (popup menu below the file name says Templates)
—the Template radio button at the bottom of the dialogue window is selected.
    Then click Save.
The dialogue will close, leaving you in the word processor document. The document's title bar sould still say "untitled (WP)". Go File > Close (or click the red Close button) to close the file. Click *Don't Save* in the alert that warns you that you have not saved the file.
Your new default options are now set, and will apply to any new word processor document you create using any of the four standard procedures:
    1. go File > New > Word processing
    2. press command-N
    3. click the Word processing button in the button bar
    4. click the Word processing button in the Basic pane of Starting Points
+and would that also allow me to use the get info window?+
It will make no change in whether you can use the Get info window. See above.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • No kext for Xserve's ATI RAGE 128 in Leopard

Xserve running OS X Server 10.5.2
The Xserve has an ATI RAGE 128 PCI graphics card from an old G3 Blue & White. System Profiler shows no kext loaded for the graphics card. The monitor displays OK, but ScreenSharing and Timbuktu both display ragged text and graphics when connecting to the Xserve.
The Extensions for the older ATI RAGE 128 graphics cards are absent from Leopard, since it isn't spec'ed to run on the B&W.
Has anyone tried using the ATI RAGE 128 Extensions from Tiger in Leopard?
Has anything changed in the way extensions are implemented that would cause Tiger's ATI RAGE 128 Extensions to fail?
    TIA,
    Sam

The Rage 128 Pro has all the drivers it needs in OSX, and OS9.2x. Since ATI considers it a discontinued product, they do not supply any drivers or support for it anymore. Try a google search for a manual, you might find one. Make sure to look for the Mac Rage 128 when you look it up.
Here is the thing, because these cards were shipped OEM by Apple (not retail) they didn't come with any cables or manuals, that I am aware of. You might find one for a similar Mac ATI Rage 128 based video card.

  • Repeated panics in com.apple.ATIRadeonX2000, after installing Snow Leopard

    Hi,
now for the 4th time around, I got a kernel panic with backtraces pointing to the com.apple.ATIRadeonX2000 driver. The previous 4 times it crashed while beeing fully idle, today it crashed while I was using the box.
The box in this case is a Mac Pro (Early 2008), with 2 ATI Radeon HD2600XT cards driving 3 displays. Everything is running on a powerfull UPS.
In early April I reinstalled the box on a SSD drive, and at the same time I upgradeded from 10.5 to 10.6 (Snow Leopard). About two-three weeks later (12th Apr) the first crash came, and then about a month later (20th May)  again. Then 16th June, and now today, 27th June..
    Here is each panic:

As mentioned, the only change introduced to the system is the SSD, and Snow Leopard instead of old Leopard. Before the change, I've never seen this crash a single time. A few panics maybe, but nothing related to this. I don't think blaming the SSD would be fair, if that would be the case much more random traces would be expected.
I'd say that this is a bad bug in the com.apple.ATIRadeonX2000 module.
Apple, any fixes for this? Update for SL or will it be addressed in Lion?
Anyone else seen similar crashes in this scenario?

Thanks Tom but the original post title was "Work in DTP, don't install snow leopard", but of course apple were unhappy with the title. I know the issue/problem has been discussed for months, the real problem is that it shouldn't be a problem which everyone has to find work arounds for.
After 4 days of playing about, I've finally got flash CS4 working and Quarkxpress was also a big problem for a few months. Printer description (PPD) files which snow leopard doesn't like, but worked in tiger & leopard.....means I can't use my two A3 inkjets for proofing anymore.
I'm just disappointed by snow leopard

  • Changing the size and/or erasing a disk partition

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro with two disk partitions. The original is 100G and runs Mavericks, and the other is 200G and runs Snow Leopard.  I can change the size of the partition with Snow Leopard that I created but not the original.  In the end I need the partition running snow leopard to be 100G and the original with Mavericks to be 200G.  Essentially swap the size.  Do I need to erase the partition I created to change the size of the original.  If so, what is the best way to do this?

This is Apple's guidance on disk partitioning.
