Leopard: Air Disk hanging at "Connecting..."

I can see my AEBS under shared in the Finder window, but it hangs on "Connecting..." and "Connect As" does nothing. Through Airport Utility, I have tried a number of times to set up different ways for it to connect. Nothing. Always the same result.
FWIW, all worked great under Tiger.
It's an Iomega Minimax 750 (and alternately an Iomega 1TB UltraMax), AEBS 1Gbit, and a Mac Book Pro connected via ethernet (WiFi turned off on AEBS).

Hi Chris,
patience is a nice thing. But the situation of many users here is a little complicated.
Many of us have
- bought a large external HD with USB to hook to the AEBS.
- than bought leopard.
Here it is not just about a feature which does not work. For example: If "spaces" would be the problem, nobody would care about that. You don't need to buy extra hardware for that purpose.
Many of us are in a household with some Apple notebooks. We for example have one iBook and two MacBooks. No extra server, no always on separate desktop system which we could use to hook up the HD. I'm just lucky that "drobo" is not available in Germany, so I didn't spent 1000 Euros but only 145 Euros for the external HD.
Second point: The AEBS is always dropping the connection the the HD. And after that I'm not able to reconnect again. I found in another thread that with a downgrade to a prior firmware for the AEBS this problem would be fixed. That must be a joke, or not?
I'm using apple HW and SW because I don't have an IT department here.
Apple: If someone is hearing me: Help!!! I didn't found a possibility to post bugs to apple on this particular problem.
Best
Fernando

  • Suddenly, my wireless connection (including Air Disk) is acting all screwy.

My airport express sometimes shows three of four airport bars and my connection becomes very intermittent. When the signal is full strnegth, everything seems to work, with the exception of my Air Disk. It simply won't mount anymore. I have never had these problems until the most recent updates. However, under a wired cnnection, everything works fine.
Is there some sort of a bug going on with all the latest Apple-latest wireless and airport drivers? This is pretty annoying.

I just had the same problem. Downgrading the airport firmware from 7.2 to 7.1 fixed it for me.

  • Macbook Air/Pro difficult to connect to Airport Extreme and external disk

For some unclear reason my MacBook Pro and Air both have difficulty connecting to the Airport Extreme external disk after waking up from sleep. I can't even see the AE in the Airport utility. If I toggle wifi on/off several times it shows up and works. What is odd is that I can always connect with my PC and on the Bootcamp partition of the Macbook Air in Windows 8.1. I'm using OS 10.10, the most recent update and have a latest model AE running updated firmware. Any ideas?

Probably Yosemite issues.  I have issues seeing Airports as well.  Like you toggling the wifi fixes it.  Hopefully 10.10.2 will solve the problem.

  • I am connected to time capsule via wi-fi but air port says not connected and disk utility does not see it

I am connected to time capsule via wi-fi but air port says not connected and disk utility does not see it. I had it connected via ethernet and it still did not see it. Then i disconncectd it from ethernet and did the Wi-fi connection and am able to post this message but air port still does not see it.

Disk Utility will not "see" the Time Capsule, so no need to waste any more time on that issue.
but air port still does not see it.
Not sure what you mean by "air port" here.

  • Cannot connect to Air Disk on Wired PC.

I cannot connect to my air disk on a wired PC. It gives me an invalid user or password (error 5) Message. I can connect just fine via my Wireless PC. Odd.
    Any ideas?

    Urp, make that error 1203.

  • 2 Airports and 4 Air Disks - Advice before I buy

    Hi all,
A little bit of background. My wife and I are both film buffs and have stacks of DVDs. Quite often we watch a movie in bed using our laptop streaming MP4 files. Works well. However, I have quite a lot of external HDDs hanging off my lovely iMac and this defeats the purpose of the beautiful design
Here is what I have: downstairs: broadband and an airport extreme.
Here is what I would like to do: broadband and airport extreme downstairs. A further extreme in my spare room with 4 air disks attached for backups and streaming movies to any of my machines. Furthermore, I would like the two extremes and their disks to be seen as one both from a wireless connection point of view and also access to the air disks.
What I mean is can I connect to my extreme downstairs and still access my air disks on my second extreme upstairs and can I connect to my extreme upstairs and access my broadband downstairs.
Sorry it is a bit long winded but want to make sure I explain why I want this: my wife does not want our living room looking like a plate of spaggetti made of USB leads.
    Regards
    SteveGB13

You could get a second Airport Extreme Base Station, configure it as a remote base station, and configure your existing Base Station as a main base station. You would then have a single wireless network with everything on it accessible from anywhere.
    A few other considerations:
    1. What is the total amount of file storage you need? You might consider getting the newly released Airport Time Capsule. It has a built in 1TB hard drive, which might be sufficient for all your needs.
    2. The performance (with video streaming) is an unknown until you set this all up. The main/remote base station setup I described above will reduce by half your wireless network's maximum possible data rate, which could be significant for video streaming performance.

  • Can't get past language selection with Leopard Install disk

My 1 year old Intel Mac Mini, which had been running 10.5.4 without problems suddenly froze up. The mouse was still active but I couldn't click anything. I turned the system off with the power button. When I restarted it got as far as the login screen, but clicking the user didn't do anything. I was able to log in using safe mode (hold down shift when starting). I ran the disc utility, repaired permissions and verified the disc. Seemed OK, but still the same behavior (freeze at login screen) when I try to boot normally.
I tried booting from the Leopard install disk. When it reached the language selection page there were some strange-looking horizontal lines in the display. Clicking the "proceed" button caused a copy of the button's graphic to appear at the top of the page and nothing else happened. Very puzzling, since I had upgraded OS X using that same disc.
I have a Superduper backup from a couple of weeks ago. It won't boot up normally either. Any ideas? Unfortunately, I'm 2 weeks out of warranty!
    Thanks,
    jwstex

I would probably start looking at the ram to see if it's worked loose or a board has gone bad (rare, but it happens).
Make sure no external drives or other unnecessary connections.
If the ram doesn't fix the problem, then you could also Zap the PRAM by holding down the Command + Option + P + R keys during boot up. Hold down the keys until the Mac goes through 3 startup chimes, then just release the keys and continue to boot normally. Check your clock settings if it boots.

  • HI!  I have a new macbook air but having difficulty connecting to a router if I am about 10 meters away.  My iMac, iPad, iPhones and iPods can connect easily.  Is there something that I need to configure?  I have no issues if I am close to it.  Thank you!

Hello, If you are dealing with one of the really thin iMac's that have no superdrive, then the superdrive icon should not appear on the desktop when you plug it in, but when you put in a disk (CD, DVD, etc.) that should appear. If you go into disk utility, and look at superdrive, that should be clickable and not grayed out when you have it plugged in. If this does not show up in disk utility, go to Apple, and ask to speak to their supervisor, speaking to a customer service agent is like talking to a potato, nothing gets done. Good Luck!

  • Windows can't find air disk

I have been searching for a long time now and can't find any answer how get my windows xp to connect to air disk..! Can anyone help would be greatly appreciate.
( I use air disk to share data in office, not to syn or anything )
    Thx

You need to install the Airport Base Station Disk Agent software that comes on the installer disk with the Airport Base Station. You might be able to download the software from Apple, too. This will put an icon on your system tray that allows you to access the AirDisk.

  • Air Disk + BitTorrent?

I've done a bit of searching but I just haven't been able to find a straight answer. I currently utilize a 500GB MyBook (Powered / 7200RPM / USB2.0) for all of my TimeMachine backups and for random assorted files, mostly larger movies and the like. I'm also an avid BitTorrent user. At any given time, I probably have about 200 (legal, of course : p ) torrents seeding within Transmission. The bad thing is, this takes up enormous amounts of space, and my 120GB internal HDD is starting to burst at the seams. My question is, is Air Disk a reliable storage medium for seeding torrents? If through wireless n i can get the same speeds as a can with a USB 2.0 drive, or at least something close, I'll be switching to that method. So much more convenient than being physically tethered to a drive. Thanks in advance for any info!

USB 2.0 Hi-speed is rated for a maximum speed of 480Mbps. The real-world, sustained speed is significantly lower. 802.11n has a maximum transfer speed of 300Mbps; real-world, sustained speed is also lower.
So 802.11n would be the bottleneck to your transfer speed. Connecting directly to the computer through USB would definitely yield faster speeds.
All that being said, if 802.11n gives you 50Mbps sustained (just a random number I picked), that's still around 6MB (megabytes) per second. In all likelihood, your Internet connection would not consistently be running at that speed.
It's generally safe to say that the Internet connection itself would be the biggest bottleneck; making the other issues moot points. However, why not give it a shot and see how it works?

  • Air Disk Problems: either miniStack v2.5 or Western Digital's 1.0TB Green?

Anyone still having Air Disk problems with either the miniStack 2.5 or the WD10EADS?
Using it as a Air Disk/hub with AEBSn (firmware 7.4.2) connecting to MBP1.83 running 10.4.10. It worked fine in this configuration for almost 2 months. The drive does not appear in finder or disk utility even when connected directly through USB or Firewire, so I'm sending the ministack back to OWC. I was just checking here to make sure that it wasn't something on Apple's end before I head to the local UPS store.

    Sorry, I'm using 10.4.11

  • Air Disk still not working. . .

OK, so my air disk was working but like many, not so much now. . .i have read many of the posting but nothing has worked so far. Can anyone forward here info that made their air disk work? I am in a MAcBook Pro, AE, System 10.5.1, ( the remote disk was working with this AE before Leopard. Not nada. Please advise, please.

    Disk Utility works...
It just takes a long time.
You don't say what version of Leopard you are running and it is not in your profile....
10.5 take about 1 hour or more to repair permissions..
10.5.1 takes from 30 minutes to an hour approximately...
Give it time, it will finish...
With 10.5.1 the blue bar says less than a minute and stays there for many minutes...
This bar should say "Less than an hour" instead of minute.......

  • IBook does not see Air Disk on AirPort Extreme

We have a few macs in my house (G5 desktop, MBP CD2, and an iBook G4). Both the G5 and the MBP see the Air Disk connect to the AE network but the iBook doesn't. iBook is running 10.3.9 and I use the "go" menu to connect to the server (IP address for the AE basestation). It worked last night with a different drive that I was testing. I purchased a new enclosure (Newer Tech's miniStack). The HD is a WD 250 GB. The AE basestation is set up to connect to the disk via the basestation's password.
    Thanks.
    Tom

To access the disk attached to the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) your iBook must be upgraded to OS 10.4.8 or better. See AirPort Extreme (802.11n) - Technical Specifications.

  • Changing a WD External HD from Time Capsule Disk to Direct Connection

I was using a WD 1T hard drive connected to my Time Capsule USB port. It was set up as Allow file sharing with Time Capsule password. I would like to stop using it here and directly connect it to my Macbook Pro (by firewire). When I try to do this, I can see the drive but get a message that I do not have user permissions to access it. Is there a way around this? Do I need to reformat the WD drive in Disk Utility to be able to use it directly again?
    Thank you.

Note: Mac 3 had a single user on it, my son. He was the admin. I created a new non-admin acct and moved all his stuff there (Not sure I did it the right way so it took a long time.). Now I am admin on that Mac. Not sure if that is relevant here (leading to the problem identified above) but thought I would mention it.
Thanks in advance for your help.
The fact that you cannot access the backup now only on this Mac does suggest this is part of the issue. Did you do this before or after the issue with access?
Permissions can be pretty tricky things.. certainly to do backups or to retrieve them from an existing backup created with different user permissions might be a mess.. Pondini is perhaps the only one who can tell you the ins and outs of that.
On the more general note.. lots of people are having issues with USB drive on the TC from Lion.. for many it stops working forever the moment the disk spins down from a reboot.. making it useless.
But it is dog slow for everyone.. The reality is USB is less than half its native speed on the TC cf on the computer.. and it wasn't that fast to begin with.
Plug the hard drive directly into the computer and mount the sparsebundle and see if the TM then can access it.. but you might need to use your admin login not your son's.
Personally if the TC disk is not big enough.. replace the TC with a larger disk version.. or the disk in the present one.. do not use disks hanging off TC. It has enough reliability issues without adding to them.
