Leopard and Airport

Some may have noticed that there are a number of threads now dealing with essentially the same issue of problematic connectivity using Airport on Leopard.
Lots of different platforms, lots of different attempts at a work-arounds... and not much luck. (Well at least nothing consistent!)
My solution (and am VERY GRATEFUL to have one) is to just wire in my MACs and pretend Airport doesn't exist. Put me back on-line; 24/7.
I started this new thread since I would like to ask a direct question of those that may have some knowledge about such things...
Has this (Airport/Leopard) been established as "KNOWN BUG" with Apple?
Is there a place we can go to see what "bugs" are already have tickets open?
Does APPLE ever give any indication that an update is being prepared for release for any of its products?
thanks,
tob

I'm sure it has BUT the sure way is for you to report it -- Safari menu ==> report bugs to Apple

  • Snow Leopard and Airport...not doing so well altogether.

I upgraded from 10.5.6 or whatever it was in June when I left...when I came back my internet was dropping a little bit here and there...and when I upgraded to Snow Leopard and the install and reboot was all over, Airport dropped my internet so quickly. Rebooted my computer, reinstalled snow leopard, turned off airport, changed the IP, I believe I did everything I could to do get the internet to work.
Right now is weird because this is one of the times where it dropped, maintained, dropped and maintained again. As Im speaking it just dropped...and came back up. Im so sick of this. My sister doesnt have the same problem at all. ****! She can get on to the cisco clean access agent, and snow leopard isnt compatabile with that yet so I cant get on to the internet at school. I dont care about the internet at school..I need the internet at home more than at school.
So in short, can you guys tell me what steps to do that will get my internet to drop less..to mainly be like my sisters where she isnt ******** about it 24/7. She does NOT have Snow Leopard but 10.5.6 OSX or whatever it is now. A key note is that I dont have my OSX install cd's from the original 10.5.2 when I got my MBP, and I didnt set up time machine before I redid it. So Im stuck with this new OS. And you might say its the router or whatever but I swear to god its not, its my computer. I just need to know what I can do that can get my internet so it doesnt drop!!! Thanks guys!

I have a Mini and am experiencing the same. Started with wireless dropping every 20 minutes or so. Then it couldn't find signal so I moved my Time Capsule closer. I'm watching my transmit rate drop every few minutes from 58, then 24, then 18, then 12, now 1. The icon in the status menu doesn't change though. According to that icon I'm getting 4 full bars of signal. If I Option+right click then I see that I'm only at 1

  • Printer not working with Leopard and Airport Express

    Hello!
I have seen that this is a common problem but I've tried several solutions that seemed to work for others but still not for me.
I have a Macbook Pro unibody and airport express with OS X 10.5.6. I used a Samsung CLP-300 wirelessly though my airport express (with Tiger on my older macbook). The printer works fine when it is plugged into my USB on the Macbook but not on the airport.
Here is what I've tried in the past 8 months:
    - update the Samsung printer driver
    - used "fixairport"
    - configured HP IP with airport local address
    - spent 2 hours on the phone with apple
None of this seemed to work. The printer will print the first page and then any subsequent pages it gives me an error host message.
If anyone can give me an idea of what did work for them in this situation, or maybe I'm doing something wrong, please let me know. It would be greatly appreciated.

kelscan, Welcome to the discussion area!
You need to reconfigure your AirPort Express (AX) so that it joins the wireless network provided by the "modem". Follow the directions in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.

  • Leopard and Airport Disk with accounts

    Question:
Has anyone have the latest firmware update on the AEBS-N and with Leopard OS with Airport Disk accounts working?
If you have downgrade firmware on AEBS-N with Airport disk set up with accounts how are you making it work?
At this time I am only getting my hard drive and not accounts showing on left sidebar.
The only way I been able to change accounts if I do a manual "connect to server" (alt-K). First I eject the shared drive on the left sidebar. Then click Alt and K key at the same time and typed in one of my accounts and password in. There must be a better way.
    Message was edited by: Higuchem

I have done that, but my problem is not that I cannot see my connected drive it is when I create accounts it still only shows the shared folder on that connected drive. So, I created two password protected accounts "A" and "B" and then there is a shared folder. Now prior to leopard when I was connected I would be able to see the shared folder and my respective folder, "A". Now when I connect I only see the share drive. This is a problem because I have two users in my household and I want to back information to each respective accounts/password protected folders but that is not happening because all we see is the shared folder.
What I saw prior on my drive connected to AEBS. A "SHARED" folder, "USERS" folder which contained the separate folders/accounts created through AEBS.
Now all I see is the "SHARED" folder.

  • Snow Leopard and Airport express speed

I have three macs connected to the internet with Airport Express in 802.11b/g mode using a fast 20Mb cable connection. Two of the machines run leopard 10.5.8, including my main machine (an Intel Power Mac) which manages the airport network. A new imac runs Snow Leopard. Whenever the iMac is running the internet slows down to a crawl on the 2 machines running 10.5.8. but seems pretty ok on the iMac. It's as if the iMac is hogging the bandwidth. Could this be a Snow Leopard vs Leopard issue? Never used to have this issue before we purchased the iMac. Or should I bite the bullet and upgrade to a newer Airport Express or Extreme running 802.11n. Any thoughts very welcome.

What about Internet speeds - do you see any difference in speeds to say the servers at speedtest.net?
There can be a variety of reasons for the results you see with iTunes and TC other than the updates; TC transfers will normally vary in speed depending on the state of the disk, and iTunes may be processing items in the background.

  • Leopard preventing AirPort install?

I just completed an archive & install of Leopard (it didn't work to do a normal upgrade) and now I am unable to get my Airport Express set up. The setup disc tells me that the OS isn't supported. Any suggestions?

Me too!! urrrgggghhhh.. I just bought leopard and airport express and cant get them to work together! HELP!!!!

  • How do I get my macmini running Mountain Lion to see my Canon USB printer connected to my Airport Extreme? I have a macbook pro running leopard and that works fine. The versions of airport utility are different and I can't even see the printer from new 1

I am having trouble seeing my usb printer from my second gen airport extreme using the newest version of airport utility under Mountain Lion. UGH! And while I can see and network to my Canon IP5000 from my macbook pro running leopard, I can't from my new macmini running Mountain Lion. Any help would be appreciated in configuring my macmini so it can see the Canon IP5000 on the airport extreme. Don't want to "share" the printer from the laptop because that would be a cludge. Thanks ahead

I solved this one based on another post. Turned out I needed the snow leopard IP5000 driver. I had just copied over the leopard driver (I had saved my .dmg file) and installed that but it didn't work. So I downloaded the latest driver which turned out to be for snow leopard and I am guessing since it is 64bit that is why it worked and the leopard driver didn't. Anyway, I also had to hook the printer up via usb to the mac mini to get it to work locally before the O/S would see it over Bonjour via the airport extreme.

  • Problem with OS X.5 Leopard and printing through Airport USB printer

I have just upgraded to Leopard from Tiger and now I can't print. Previously, all 3 of my computers could print to my Samsung printer that is connected to the USB port of the Airport Extreme base station. They could see the Samsung printer through Bonjour and it worked great. Now my computers running Leopard can't see the printer on the wireless network. I've downloaded the latest driver from Samsung and that didn't help. When I connect the printer directly to my Mac tower it prints fine. However I don't want to have the tower on all the time, sharing the printer through the network. It seems to be an issue with Leopard + Bonjour + Airport base station.
    Details:
I have a G5 Tower connected via ethernet to the Airport router.
I also have an intel Mac Mini and a G4 Powerbook 1.67 connected to the Airport through wireless.
The Samsung laser printer is connected to the USB port on the Airport base station.

I too have been bit by the Leopard/wireless printing bug....
Originally, we had two older iMacs running Tiger; both printing to a Lexmark X502n wirelessly via an Airport Express. The set up worked flawlessly for approx. 15 months. A couple of weeks ago, I upgraded to a new (beautiful!) 24" iMac running Leopard. I can print one document, and then like the other posters, the printer shows it's printing, but the printer goes to pause and says it can not connect with host. The Express is on green light, and all the settings are there in the Airport Utility. If I go through the process to "discover" in the Airport Utility, I can then print another page.
But - once the new iMac goes into "printer pause" and needs to be reset, the other older iMac can no longer print. If I reset everything on the new iMac, the other iMac can print as usual - until I print from the new iMac. Lexmark still has no drivers available for this model and Leopard. Past postings on various boards projected they would be available by mid-2008. Obviously, that has not happened. I have contacted Lexmark and they tell me they don't know when drivers will be available. I spent most the day yesterday on the phone with 3 different people at Apple Care. No help other than to say I need the new drivers.
I'd move the laser printer over by my computer and connect via USB, but it is also our fax machine and on a dedicated line. Since we only have the one jack for the second phone line, moving the printer is not an option.
Any help appreciated! I'm ready to go out and buy new cartridges for my old trusty HP inkjet....
The new iMac is connected to a D-Link WBR-2310.
The airport express is connected to the Lexmark X502n via USB.
The wireless network is not secured.

  • Recent Time Machine and Airport Leopard update causes Kernel panic

I had 15 iMac's in a classroom that were all updated to the new Leopard update for Time Machine and Airport. When they restarted, they all gave a kernel panic error. Successive restarts continue with the screen starting with the kernel panic error message and asking for a shutdown.
I am extremely sure that it had to be those updates because they were all fine before that. I doubt 30 pieces of RAM could have gone kaput all at once. Since we have a dual boot setup, if I press the alt key when I restart, I can boot into the Windows side without any problems.
If somebody has had a similar problem and found a way to do something about the kernel error, please let me know. Thanks in advance. I did the usual zapping RAM and stuff. It didn't help.

  • IP Address Conflicts - iMac and Airport Express, Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion

In our home we have an iMac, two Mac notebooks, an iPad, an Apple TV and a Sony Playstation that all use wi-fi.  I have a recurring problem.  When several devices are connected to the Internet through Airport Extreme (wi-fi) downloads really slow down.  Since the Airport Extreme is connected directly to a Motorola cable modem that also has wi-fi, I often shift my iMac wi-fi connection to the Motorola cable modem to speed up the Internet. Lately I have been getting an IP address conflict message in a pop-up box when I shift to the cable modem wi-fi. The system preference shows the IP address automatically assigned via DCHP.  It also offers the option of DHCP plus manual.
I am now using Snow Leopard and intend to upgrade to Mountain Lion.
How can I resolve the conflict?  Or, should I consider some other wifi network configuration?  Is the upgrade to Mountain Lion likely to resolve the problem or make it worse?  Can I use the DHCP plus manual to manually assign an IP address to the iMac to resolve the IP address conflict, and, if so, what it the procedure?

Is the DHCP assignment being done by your cable modem or your AirPort Extreme?
What is the exact text of the conlict message, and where does it pop up?
If your cable modem and your AirPort Extreme are both running DHCP servers for the same subnet (which they really should not be allowed to do), they must be set to assign addresses from disjoint pools.

  • HP Color Laserjet 3550 and airport

    Hi there
I have three mac laptops all connected to the above printer using the airport extreme. The printer seems to have slowed down dramatically recently -it sometimes takes up to 10 minutes to process and print a simple word document. The HP driver seemed to work pretty well, but can anyone help with why the printer is so slow?
    Thanks

I just bought my MacBook Pro last week. I have been trying off and on for 3 days to get it to print to my HP Color Laserjet 3550 through apple talk and keep getting a message: The Application Printer Proxy Quit Unexpectedly.
I tried the generic post script printer driver. I no longer got the message but it didn't print either. I am at my wits end.
I was going to upgrade my IMac to Leopard and I sure am glad I read your post. I now will not upgrade because my IMac prints just fine.
So I at least learned something here. Maybe Leopard isn't the best system yet.

  • Printing issues with D1455 and Airport express

Hi, I'm having problems printing with an HP Deskjet D1455 and the airport express. The printing always halts after printing half the page.
Attached is another post related with this problem:
    "HI,
i just purchased the Deskjet 1455 and connected to the airport express for wireless printing. I followed the instructions of installing printer on windows with bonjour on the Apple website. After I get everything set, then I started to print, but it stopped while printing(It prints half of the document then stop). In the computer status says ''error'', and it is the same thing when I trying to delete it.
The printer works when I directly connect to the computer.
I want to use wireless printing, how to solve this problem? THANK YOU!"
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1492845&tstart=0
Does anybody knows how can I can solve this?
    Thank you.

I came across your question and wondered if you could help me. I just bought a macpro with leopard and am having a heck of a time getting it to work with my design jet 800ps which is connected by usb cable. I installed the driver for the printer from the leopard cd but to no avail. The printer shows up in the printer list but when I send a file nothing happens. I have been on the phone with HP but nothing seems to make a difference.
    Thanks much

  • FW800 and Airport conflicting

I posted this at the end of a thread started a few months ago and got nothing. So here's a second try at getting some help.
Bottom line: FW800 and Airport don't like each other on my 24-inch iMac.
I tried a WD MyBook Pro 500GB external drive and the drive wouldn't stay mounted using FW800. It would mount and then unmount sporadically and never stay mounted with any consistency.
I figured it was the drive, sent the MyBook back to Amazon and bought an OWC Mercury Elite Pro. Plugged it in and had the same problem. This time, I try FW400 and it works fine. So I search here and someone else said if they turn off their Airport 802.11n card, FW800 works with their drive. So I did that and that solves the problem.
However, I bought the Airport Extreme in March for a reason and it wasn't so I could use an Ethernet cable with my new iMac. I have AppleCare, so I call them and get I'm guessing the newest guy in the call center. He says "If turning off the Airport works, what's the problem?" Well, because I paid for a computer that's supposed to run FW800 and Airport at the same time. So he goes to his supervisor or whoever, comes back and tells me that I should re-set the PRAM and the power (which I had done already without success). Otherwise, Mr. Newbie tells me they don't support third-party drives and I should contact OWC. I called OWC for a laugh, knowing the drive's not the problem and the guy suggested I install the 10.4.10 Combo Update. That was at least a decent suggestion ... But it didn't work.
At this point, I'm perplexed. I know from reading posts here that the Airport shouldn't be interfering with the FW800 port, but I know what I'm seeing. The drive works fine on FW800 as long as Airport is off ... turn it on and the drive disappears and comes back and disappears again. Apple obviously doesn't have any solution except to blow me off and I'm guessing my best hope is that Leopard will resolve things when it's finally released? Anybody got any other suggestions?
24-inch iMac, Mac Mini, G3 600 iBook, iPod Video   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Hi i20west!
Sounds as if the problem is with the settings on the Network panel of System Preferences. [I don't have an answer for what might have happened.]
First, turn on AirPort in the menu bar icon. Open System Preferences, open the Network panel, click on the "Assist me..." button at the bottom of the panel, followed by clicking the blue "Assistant..." button in the drop-down box. [Do NOT click the "Diagnostics..." button.]
"Network Setup Assistant" will open while System Preferences will remain open behind it. On the "Introduction" pane, for convenience enter "airport to router" in the "Location Name:" box and click the "Continue" button. On the "How Do You Connect to the Internet?" pane, activate (by clicking) the radio button left of "I use AirPort to connect to the Internet wirelessly." and click the "Continue" button.
Read and proceed. After configuration is completed you will see in bold at the top "Congratulations! You Are Connected." Click the "Done" button and Network Setup Assistant will close and quit. There should be a message box in front of System Preferences stating that "Your network settings have been changed by another application." That's as it should be, since you just used another app to make those changes, so click "OK" and close.
Finally, change the "Show:" selector to "Network Port Configurations" and select (highlight) the line "AirPort" and simply use the mouse to drag the entire line to the top of the list. Drag the "Built-in FireWire" line to second position in the list. Verify that both boxes are checked to the left. Follow by clicking the "Apply Now" button at bottom right.
The above will change none of the previous settings in other configurations that are maintained in the Network panel of System Preferences. The name of each of those different configurations is displayed in the "Location:" selector for you to choose how you wish to be connected. You should now see on that selector the name you earlier gave this new configuration - "airport to router"
While it may appear to be confusing, you'll notice that after you switch from one configuration name to another and have clicked the "Apply Now" button - the settings that you will see on each pane will be the ones that are appropriate for that configuration.
Once you have a working configuration, be careful not to edit any of its settings followed by clicking the "Apply Now" button, as that will alter the configuration so that it may no longer work.
Rather than haphazardly editing a working configuration, it's less confusing to simply initiate an entirely new configuration, as you've just done above. If that would then continue to work better for you, say for a month or so, then the prior configuration, and other old configurations, may no longer be necessary, and can be deleted from the "Location:" selector.

  • Best Router for both a Mac Pro with Leopard and a Dell

I have posted this question in another forum, but maybe this discussion page is the better one for my question, especially in light of all the connectivity problems I'm reading about for people who have upgraded to Leopard -
Can anyone suggest a good router to purchase that would work with no problems for a Mac Pro with Leopard?
Or, the other side of the coin - what routers have you personally had problems with?
I would be connecting to the router via an ethernet cable, but I'm looking specifically for a g and b router. I need to cover my roommate too - she has a Dell and she uses a wireless usb adapter to connect wirelessly. We have a modem (cable or DSL, I think?) and high-speed internet service.
We were previously using a Netgear router, but suddenly it won't work for more than 10-15 min before it loses connection after we reset it. And this happened before I updated to the Leopard.

Apple AirPort Extreme has served my mixed environment very well. You can buy a refurbished one from Apple and save some $.

  • FCE 2 and Tiger and iLife 05 or Leopard and iLife 08? on G5 Power Mac 2.5

I want to do basic and advanced editing with my FCE 2
I have Quicktime pro and Apple TV and Airport Extreme Base Station that I am about to hook up and integrate with my computer and Television.
Should I leave well enough alone with my Tiger and iLife 05 or should I install a full version of Leopard and iLife 08
I'm thinking I need the Leopard and 08 for the Apple TV and Airport Extreme Base Station.
Should I go ahead and put the Leopard and 08 and Quicktime Pro and UPGRADE to FCE 4, I can do this?
But will my old 2004 G5 2.5 Dual handle all this.
I could as easily stay with Tiger and FCE 2 and 05 except for the Apple TV and the Extreme Base Station.
Sorry I'm so long. I'm totally confused?

I'm one of the ones that got hurt really bad when Apple went from the G5 to Intel
I paid $3500 in Dec 2004 for what I thought was going to be the center of a Recording and Video Studio for music Video's and Documentaries.
I lost three years due to health matters and my Applecare expired Dec 2007
I'm trying to recover and start filming and recording.
I know that I will have to go with a new Intel PowerMac 8 core to run Final Cut Studio 2 beginning one year from now. I can't afford it now.
I'm trying to buy stuff that will work with the new Intel and my old G5 for now.
I bought the AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and an Apple TV in September to integrate with my new Panasonic Plasma 42" High Definition TV and a ONKYO 7.1 Home Theater System. $900 for the TV and $300 for the ONKYO
I bought a Canon HV20 High Definition and Standard Definition Camcorder to film with.
I want to shoot and film and edit sound and video on my current Mac until I get the newer computer and software that I am going to need to accomplish my goal of near professional quality in all facets. So this is the first step. I will be able to run all this stuff but compatibility issues are killing me because of the G5 Intel Changeover.
The learning curve I am trying to lessen by getting as near as I can to what next year will be fully modern and state of the art Apple Equipment and Software instead of piecemeal like I'm doing. I'm trying to lesson my losses the best I can and get this thing going without losing any more valuable time. I am 63 years old and couldn't set a watch seven years ago. It has taken me this long to get somewhat of a handle on what I knew was unimagined capability for a common man with all this new technology.
I bought the Leopard thinking I needed it. I can not use it and resell it pretty easily. I have no tech support, I'm trying to get this thing to work.
