Leopard and eMac 1.25 GHz - No Probs!

Just wanted to post, in case you own an eMac and are afraid of upgrading to Leopard as much I was. I had read all kinds of horror stories about slow machines, software not working, hard drive crashes, etc. so I waited to upgrade to Leopard until I could take it no more.
I am so happy I upgraded to Leopard! My eMac is so much faster now. Spotlight used to be unusable as it was dead slow--now search is instantaneous! Even dashboard, which was a pig under Tiger is now actually usable on this machine! Everything is noticeably faster.
I had no problems updating using Archive and Install (the "last minute" took about a half hour, though). It took about three hours for Spotlight to rebuild after the install and during that time the machine was operating at 100%, so plan to leave the machine alone for a bit afterwards as it will run very slow during that time.
I deactivated my Adobe CS2 suite before upgrading and reactivated afterwards, and all the apps work great! The only software I lost was my Canon LIDE 30 scanner driver, which is not compatible, but I am using third party software in place of it and it works great too. Office 2004, Toast 7.1.3, and FileMaker Pro 9 are my other main apps and they came through great.

I was able to do it "unsupported" on a 700MHz eMac, no probs, Front Row, Spaces, and Time Machine works! Its slow on software update installer, very.

  • Is there a final verdict on Leopard and eMacs?? (1.42 ghz versions)

I've read nearly every upgrade post here about Leopard and eMacs and for the life of me I don't get the impression that there is a correct answer on this upgrade. It seems that the eMac is too close to the minimum requirements to run Leopard with any degree of comfort. True? Not many success stories here.

I have a 1.25 GHz version. I was running 10.3 and started to get frustrated with some web sites not working on the older version of Safari. Also some of the recent upgrades to adobe etc weren't supported by 10.3. As a short fix I downloaded the Camino browser. This solved a lot of the surfing problems. I finally decided to bite the bullet and bought the Mac Box set of Leopard, iLife '09 and iWork '09.
At the risk of sounding negative I have had nothing but problems since. This may all be down to my own incompetence (I am not technically minded) or down to the fact that my eMac is reaching the end of it's days. Either way I am now facing up to the fact that I may have to go and buy another computer. I've had problems with Mail (I now know this to be a known problem, see forums for fix). A kernal panic, resulting in an erase and reinstall. I am now suffering from very slow performance across all applications with more spinning beach ball than I've ever witnessed. I've scoured the forums for help and have tried everything within my limited technical ability. Repaired disk and permissions, ran the hardware test, created a new user, checked activity monitor. My hard disk is less than 50% utilised and I have 1 GB of RAM. All very disappointing. I was hoping that Leopard would blow the rest of my family away and that I would be in a good position to pitch for a new Mac! Now I'm not so sure.
I apologise for such a disappointing post and I hope you have better luck!

  • Mac OS X Leopard and eMac G4 hotkeys

    Hi! I have eMac G4 1.25gHz with OS X 10.5.8 installed.
It is with PC wireless keyboard and I want to turn screen off from the keyboard. The combination is cmd+shift+eject, right? On my keyboard short press on F12 opens a dashboard and long press works like eject. But cmd+shift+eject reboots eMac instead of turning screen off.
    How can I fix it?
P.S. I'm sorry for my english, but my native language forums were not helpful.

On a standard Mac keyboard, the shutdown/sleep/restart screen is control + eject--no shift involved. Some third-party boards may not support the more esoteric Mac KB shortcuts.

  • Greetings: I have just acquired an older mini mac (2006 1.66 ghz core 2 duo) Anyway, it had Tiger 10.4 on it and the Bluetooth worked.  I upgraded to Snow Leopard and everything works fine - except Bluetooth. The Bluetooth icon isn't there. Any ideas?

    Greetings:
I have just acquired an older mini mac (2006 1.66 ghz core 2 duo) Anyway, it had Tiger 10.4 on it and the Bluetooth worked for the wireless Apple keyboard and mouse.  I upgraded to Snow Leopard and everything works fine - everything except Bluetooth.
The Bluetooth icon does not exist in the System Preferenc screen.
I tried to download Bluetooth from Apple site but the message I got told me that I didn't need it.
Under Finder, Utilities, I found Bluetooth File Exchange but the message I got was that I had to connect a Bluetooth device to my computer.
I have to admit that I have no idea what's going on here.  I am hoping to avert the need to try another complete re-install of Snow Leopard.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Puzzled is a polite word for it.
Thanks Barry - I found the file and trie to send it to trash.  The response: (This item cannot be trashed as it it owned by the system).
After dancing around with PRAM and SMC and turning on while holding the power-cntrl-option-shift and heavens knows what else, I now have the Bluetooth symbol on the top of the menu bar but it is ghoseted and has a squiggly line through it.   This, I didn't have before so I read this as some progress.  It notes that "Bluetooth is not available">
However, the Bluetooth icon is still missing from the System Preferences window - you know, between "network" and "sharing".
You note that you reckon the issue is not software based and you may be correct.  The reason that I wonder about that though, is that before I installed Snow Leopard, the keyboard and mouse both paired with the box under the Tiger 10.4.  That leads me to conclude that hardware is functional and that there is some screwy little bit of software that is not cooperating.
If I could delete Bluetooth from the system and re-install a fresh version, that might help.  Or, is there a way I can use the Snow Leopard install disc and only load in Bluetooth?
    I'm stumped.
    Thanks for your time

I recently updated? to Lion from 10.6.8(snow leopard), and things seem to be running slower.  Has anyone had similar problems?  I have Feb 2011 Macbook pro 13" 2.3 Ghz.

As Shootist pointed out, the system uses more power.
However, initially it will reindex the hard drive for spotlight, which will slow things down temporarily.
It also must rebuild caches that eventually will speed things up.
If it has completed indexing the hard drive (no dot pulsing in the spyglass), then there might be something wrong.
Start by booting into the Recovery HD (a partition created with Lion that has Disk Utility and reinstallation options) by holding down cmd-r when you restart. You can let go when the gray screen appears.
When it boots, select Disk Utility and Repair the drive.
If that doesn't speed things up, try re-installing the OS from the same Recovery HD. It won't delete any of your files, but it has helped some people whose Macs ran slow after installing Lion.
Also, how much memory do you have? Lion needs RAM so maxing your Mac out might also help.

  • Hello friends!I use mac book(2.4 GHz intel core 2 duo).is it worth updating to snow leopard and then lion?if so how to do so?

Hello  I use mac book 2.4 GHz intel core 2 duo.Is it worth updating to latest version like snow leopard and then Lion or buying new mac air?
    regards
    Clayton.

Well, it depends on what you expect it to do and if it works as expected - it that answer is yes, I'd say make sure you max out the RAM (I've noticed Snow Leopard needs more). Doing it this way gives you a machine which will run 2 different OS versions - on the other hand, depending on when you'd buy the MBA, you may only be able to run Lion (unless you buy that quickly as well while they still come with SL).

If you are trying to upgrade using a gray-faced OS X disk from another system, that won't work, as those disks are locked to the system types they are delivered with. You'll need to drop the $29 on a retail copy of Snow Leopard, which is available from the Apple online store. Note Snow Leopard requires 1GB minimum, and you may want at least 2GB for better performance.

  • I've got 10.3.9 on eMac 1.42 GHz. What's the order of available updates?

I want to update my OS ultimately to 10.5.9, the maximum I understand.
I'm running up to 10.3.9 on eMac 1.42 GHz.
Simply put, can i install 10.4.3, or even 10.4.11 without 10.4.1 or 10.4.2 without any problems, or is there a official order of available updates, whether that means buying updates or +downloading free+ updates, that I can follow knowing I've updated my OS properly?
I hope this makes sense. it should be simple but that's why I'm here, for knowledge, hopefully without fuss and with clarity.
    Thank you for your time.

wilberforceroland , welcome to Apple Discussions.
You can skip Tiger & go directly to Leopard. One consideration. If you are currently using old apps in classic mode, Leopard doesn't support classic mode. You'll have to use Tiger.

  • Leopard and iChat

Whenever I use iChat the video locks up on me. I can no longer send or receive video. The audio continues to work however. I have to force quit iChat to quit the application. The person I am chatting with has a new iMac also with Leopard and it works just fine.
I have done the following things which I found on the discussion forums (in no particular order) none of which has helped:
    1. Made sure internet sharing is off
    2. Bypassed my Linksys router and went direct to my DSL Modem.
    3. Used a video camera instead of the iSight.
    4. All updates for the tower have been installed
    5. Checked Firewall settings- made sure it was set to allow all
    6. Changed streaming settings in Quicktime
    7. Changed Firewire ports the camera is on.
    8. Disconnected other Firewire devices
The incoming and outgoing video just freezes. It does not matter if any other applications are running or not. Other network items such as Safari continues to work fine.
    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    David

    iChat Freeze:
I just sent my daughter-in-law a brand new Aluminum iMac 2.0 GHz, OS X 10.5.0. When she tried to use iChat (ver. 4) she got the identical iChat freeze failure you and others have described:
About 15 - 30 seconds after establishing a video iChat connection the iChat video freezes and she can no longer send or receive video. The audio continues to work however. She has to force quit iChat to quit the program.
I was convinced it was a Leopard issue until I saw this “iChat Freeze” topic at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1164081&tstart=0
where the same failure sequence happened under OS X 10.4.10 except that instead of freezing iChat (ver 3) generated a connection failure report.
This makes me suspect there may be two problems: a video freeze due to an ISP/router bandwidth limiter issue; and an iChat freeze due to a Leopard bug.
Her current ISP/Router (AT&T/2WIRE) lets her video iChat work okay on her old eMac OS X 10.4.10.
She plans to update to OS X 10.5.1 but we suspect that won’t help.
On the chance her router doesn’t trust her new high-speed Mac, she’ll try reducing the Bandwidth Limits in iChat’s preferences and see if that helps. She’ll also check the Statistics and Error Log in iChat’s Connection Doctor.
In the meantime any leads to fixing the problem would be appreciated.

  • Help - upgrading from Tiger to Snow Leopard AND new larger hard drive, MBP

    Howdy!
My iPhone has finally demanded that I upgrade my MBP from Tiger. And as if by coincidence, my now puny 100GB internal drive is packed full with less than a gig free most of the time. (10% free is the MINIMUM free allowance, I know!!) I run old copies of Adobe CS2, Quark, Quickbooks, Microsoft Office... would love to keep them working without purchasing upgrades, but probably isn't a realistic hope. None of it is mission critical at this point.
So I've purchased the $29 Snow Leopard DVD (from a reseller - it says CPU Drop-In DVD Version 10.6 on the disk), and a new 750GB internal drive (same reseller - The drive is a 2.5" SATA 5400RPM 8MB-Buffer Hard Drive (9MM Slim) (RoHS Green Friendly)), to get with the times.
    My other resources include:
    - two 1TB LaCie external drives with FW and USB2 ports
    - one other LaCie external drive - I think 360GB?
    - Retrospect 5.0 (most of my backups are encrypted Retrospect files on those three LaCie external drives, but there's some room on them)
    - a $22 USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE adapter with AC power, to access whatever laptop drive might be without an enclosure temporarily
    - a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner software
    - I just ordered an upgrade to my ancient (OS9) copy of DiskWarrior
    - A monster UPS battery backup and line conditioner that everything plugs into for this process
It has been a long time since I've DIY'd any undertaking this complex, and I'm looking for advice on what to do first, how to go about this.
    Here's my setup:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro 15"
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro1,1
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP11.0055.B08
    SMC Version: 1.2f10
I'm guessing I should do it like this, PLEASE EDIT or make suggestions or tell me what I forgot to do before I do it!!
    1. Back up everything to at least two external locations! Also, make a bootable copy of my current internal drive in its own volume, to at least one external drive that is formatted in HFS+ GUID partition style, with Carbon Copy Cloner (would Retrospect work well for this instead?).
    2. Free up at least 20GB on the current internal drive (100GB). Hopefully 30GB.
    3. Run Disk Utility on the current internal drive. Fix any problems. (Should I hit it with DiskWarrior instead?)
    4. Format the new 750GB drive to HFS+, GUID partitions. (How long will that take? Can I do it with the USB-SATA cable adapter, sitting on my desk, or does it have to be in an enclosure? The adapter has AC power)
    5. Run Disk Utility (or DiskWarrior?) on the new internal drive in its temporarily external position. Fix any problems.
    6. Boot off the Snow Leopard CPU Drop-In DVD and install onto both drives. (Will this version of the DVD I have wipe all files when it installs to a disk???)
    7. See how they run. Boot off the old 100GB internal drive, boot off the new to-be-internal 750GB drive. Panic if it's not going well.
    8. If the current internal 100GB drive is rocking Snow Leopard and my familiar files and apps seem somewhat functional, use Carbon Copy Cloner to recreate the volume on the new larger drive. Then swap the drives physically. (Links to good step-by-step instructions on this part would be much appreciated here!!)
    9. If the Snow Leopard DVD overwrote or snuffed out my familiar files and apps on the old internal drive, sigh deeply, then swap the drives physically. Use CCC (or Retrospect? or Migration Assistant?) to fetch my junk from the old internal drive's backup and plunk it on the new bigger internal drive (now installed).
    10. See how it runs. Shake my fist at the sky over the planned obsolescence of technology paired with the seductive power of my iPhone. Grumpily upgrade the software that I actually create income with.
Please help! I am just faking it here based on a few message boards I've read. Will this actually work properly?
    Thanks!

Howdy slowpoke43, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Please help! I am just faking it here based on a few message boards I've read. Will this actually work properly?
LOL, if your faking it you're the best!
    1. Yes, absolutely... no CCC would be best in my experience/opinion.
    2. Yes, the more he better... Free Space is no longer our Free Space, but OSX's.
    3. Indeed, & if you have the correct version of DW, do that.
    4. Yes, not long, A/C power is great.
    How to format your disks...
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/partitioningtiger.html
(To Install OSX on an IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)
Thanks to Pondini, Formatting,  Partitioning, Verifying,  and  Repairing  Disks...
    http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html
    6. Yes, boot off the 10.6 DVD, & no Snow Leopard does by default what we used to call an Archive & Install, saves & updates all your info, APPs, Music, etc., it may quarantine a few things or not but will tell you.
    7. Absolutely, but Panic won't be needed with your great preparation & Bootable Backups!
    8. Not quite sure I understand, but run SL for a few days before you do anything.
    9. Yeah, but again with you doing everything right from the gitgo, I can't picture that happening.
    10. Yes indeed, the hangup with yours is that it only holds 2GB of RAM... a pain in 10.5 & up IME.
Again let me say... GONGRATS, I've never ever seen anybody so well prepared & informed despite your diffidence!

  • Mid 2009 macbook pro (10.7.2)- can i install leopard and lion on partitions?

    Hello,
I have just bought a refurbished macbook pro and want to install 10.5 leopard on a partition of the hard drive so that I can run my original software that I use on my 2008 Imac (eg Protools 7.4 which would cost hundreds to upgrade as protools 7.4 won't work with snow leopard and protools 8 that would work with snow leopard won't work with my original mbox so would have to buy a new mbox/protools!). The disc 10.5 (leopard) disc that came with my 2008 Imac doesn't work with my macbook pro but would another Macbook pro specific disc work?
    Thanks in advance!!
    Specs-
15 INCH, MID 2009 MACBOOK PRO
Processor  2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74)

That machine should have shipped with Leopard, so yes you can install Leopard on a separate partition. However, you will need the original install disk to do so...they are model specific, and you can only obtain these through AppleCare. Call them & see if they will ship you such...there will be a small fee.

  • Dual Boot with Snow Leopard and Mavericks not possible?

I have a Early 2011 Macbook Pro with 2,3 GHz i7 Quad and two 512 GB SSDs (the secondary disk in an optical drive bay enclosure). This Macbook Pro can run Snow Leopard and Mavericks on the primary disk without problems. When I try to set up a dual boot system however, problems appear and it looks like it is not possible. When I start from Snow Leopard, I cannot select Mavericks as a start volume and vice versa. The error message says something like "Bless tool" cannot use this disk, i.e. unmount and boot from it. The problem remains when I exchange the disks (putting the primary disk in the drive enclosure and vice versa). When I put the secondary drive in an external case however, it is possible to boot from it -  but strange things happen when the system starts: My computer clock is reset to 1/1/2001, WiFI passwords are not remembered for more than one session, disk permissions are reported as "repaired" but do apear as not repaired when I check them again - and other issues). I have verified both disks already and repaired permissions but that does not change the situation. So my experience is different from what is said in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/566781. It looks like the latest Mavericks cannot coexist with Snow Leopard on neiter a secondary internal drive nor on an external drive. This is strange since both disks and systems work flawless when run alone. Any suggestions to solve this problem?

When I check the Mavericks disk in the optical drive with disk utility after booting / running Snow Leopard on the primary disk I get som errors, see below ("disk utility Info"). So after all, I decided to erase the disk and install Mavericks new. But even erasing the disk is not possible when it is in the optical drive enclosure. I get this error message:
"Volume Erase failed with the error:
    Could not unmount disk"
When I put this disk into an external case connected via USB however, it starts and runds MAvericks without any Problem. Same happens when I put thie Mavericks disk into the internal primary hard disk place.

  • Mouse skipping- Wired and wireless, Snow Leopard and Lion

We purchased a new Mac Pro last year and from the beginning have had issues with the mouse skipping around while in use. Issue is intermittent. Exists whether using wired or wireless mouse and present in both of the two user profiles that we have set up. Initially we were running Snow Leopard, and now have upgraded to Lion - which hasn't made any difference. All updates have been installed.
I've tried resetting the SMC, PRAM and trashing preferences. Hardward test resulted with: 4VDC/1/40000003: VideoController
Could an issue with the video controller be causing this?
I've read a lot of discussions with various mouse issues that are similar - yet no clear resolutions.
    HEEEEEEELLLLLLLLP!
    Specs:
    Mac Pro - Mid 2010
    3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    16 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 EEC
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53)

I plan to definitely have that checked out - but the machine is currently in high demand and if that is not related to the mouse issue, it will be tough to take it out of service at the time.
Do you have any idea if the video controller issue could cause this mouse issue?
    Thanks for the comment.

  • Leopard and Power PC

If I have a power pc g5 tower and looking to buy leopard...how do i go about buying the cd version of it?
Is it possible to do it online?
And then can i get the intel version as well without paying for the OS twice, or do i have to?
Thank you to whoever can help me with this.

    Hi Gulliver --
I wandered in to the forum and stumbled onto your response. I am looking to determine whether my G4 Power PC is compatible with Leopard. I have the G4 Power PC laptop. Its CPU speed is 1.25 GHz. The bus speed is 187 MHz. Is my laptop compatible with Leopard? Apple's tech specs, I think, indicate to me that Leopard and my laptop are compatible. Here's how I figured it: my 1.25 GHZ CPU speed equals 1,250 MHz. 1,250 MHz exceeds the required 867 MHz. Bus speed doesn't matter. Have I made the correct calculations? Thanks.

    Help,
I have a MacBook Pro and would like to upgrade the OS.

It is up to date with Version 10.5.8 and has a 2.5 GHZ Intel Core 2 duo processor
    I have 4GB  667MHZ DDR2 SDRAM memory.
I want to update to Snow Leopard and then maybe Lion.....
It appears my systems is to old to update online. So where can I buy a Snow Leopard disk/s. My local Best Buy does not carry the disk update anymore. Where can I get the disk?
Not to happy with my MAC right now ............. It seems to be poorly supported by APPLE.  Am I missing something   ?

    You apparently missed my response.
It can also be found by entering "Store" under the Apple home page, and typing "snow leopard" in the search window.
