Leopard and PowerBook G4 Shutdown, Restart, etc.

If I've been using my computer for a while (a day or so), I find it almost impossible to shutdown, restart, or logout of the computer. It will close one application then timeout saying that it couldn't close the program (although it's not running). If no program is running, it will quit Finder but do nothing else (just shows my background). I can relaunch the Finder and continue to work normally and shutdown via the terminal (sudo shutdown). However, this is not very handy when trying to install an update (Keychain update specifically). It keeps saying it's not installed so I assume I have to restart through OS X.
If it matters, I often put the computer to sleep as I go to class. I'm not positive if this matter because I haven't been able to keep it awake for over a day yet to see. Also, sometimes my Google Notifier refuses to recognize an Internet connection or just shows the same amount of msgs even though I'm getting more. Again, not sure if this has anything to do with it but I have turned it off and I still have the problem. The install of Leopard was also an Update rather than a complete clean install.
Thanks.

I am having a similar problem where, when I tell it to restart or shutdown, it removes all the icons and shuts down all the programs, but leaves the Dock still in place and an empty screen and sits there. I can only shut down by powering off. I didn't try sudo shutdown, but I will try that next time. But is there something else to be done besides using the terminal?

  • New Leopard and RAM Random shutdown won't restart

I have recently purchased Leopard and new RAM to boost my systems power for an HD editing project.
Ever since my computer now randomly shuts down and won't restart. The only thing that gets the computer to restart is if I pop out the RAM cards and reinsert them. It never did this before I upgraded. And if I leave out the new RAM card it still shuts down with just the old RAM leading me to believe theres a problem with Leopard.
I've done disk utility and while the 1st time I ran it it found errors that it repaired. But it still shuts down and when I run disk utility it finds no errors. I can't figure this out and I need to get this project going. Any ideas?

THis is the results of the test through rember. I have no idea what these results mean.

  • MBP 2 won't sleep manually, w/closed lid and hangs on shutdown/restart

So basically, when I'm done using it I have to hard shutdown.
    I have-
    zapped PRAM
    reset SMC
    trashed those pref files
    fixed/check permissions & the disk
This thing in like 2 weeks old less than 10 hours of use for peep's sake! I bought this MBP2 to be my backup so I can take my G5 dual core in to get fixed so now that will have to wait.

Meaning MacMall doesn't accept returns on Apple products. If it has a problem, like mine, you have to go to Apple to get it fixed. You can't send it back for a new one.
Update- I just erased and installed and the problems are still there. It won't sleep manually, (will by itself but then screen won't wake) it won't shutdown and it hangs at restart. Hard reboot is my only option right now because no one here seems to have a solution so I guess I'm calling Apple.

  • Leopard and Audio Stutter Requiring Restart

Ever since installing Leopard, there will be some random event that causes audio to start stuttering and the only way to stop it is to restart the computer. I use Guitar Rig 2 very heavily but it isn't just the tracks with GR2 active that stutter. Once it goes, it's all the way gone and affects all audio. I normally use headphones and can sometimes go two hours before it fails but it doesn't seem to survive more than five or ten minutes when I'm using the monitors hanging from the audio interface. That kind of points to Presonus incompatibility but the best course of action is not at all clear. Any help would be appreciated as a back-out would be next to impossible.

I finally have a chance to get back and check Q&As/Posts. I actually solved my stuttering, indirectly thru another issue. During the 10.4 OS update, my dock (in Leopard screen) dissappeared. In the attempts to recover it, I fell back on my PC way of thinking and decided to re-install the 10.4 update, and wa-lah, the dock was back, and the stutter stopped and has not returned to this day. It appears the updates could have something to do with it, in addition to, things like a cell phone near by, frequency interference from other electronics, etc. However, I still think it's often an update related matter.
Here's a discussion on the issue, and also do a search in support with "Macbook audio stutter" and do the search for the last 90 days. The search will yield some good discussions, even more relevant ones the last 30 days, one person noting stuttering started after their upgrade to 10.5
    Hope this helps.

  • Force Quit window 'blank' and cannot use shutdown/restart in menu

    I have a Dual G5 running 10.5.8.
Over the past 2 months I will have a situation where my computer will still work in individual applications, but
    1. I cannot use apple-tab to change applications
    2. I cannot select the restart/shutdown menu
    3. option-apple-esc brings up the Force Quit menu, but its blank
I end up having to hard-restart the machine using the button on the front.
Anyone have ideas on what may be at the root of this?
I have created another user account but still get the error.
I have a new hard drive installed.
I have run /sbin/fsck/ -fy all is clean
    I have run repair permissions
    What next?

    Hi
I have seen damaged/corrupted fonts cause similar issues. If you've introduced/downloaded new fonts in the last two months perhaps it's these that's causing the problems?
Have you tried booting from the installer disk and trying for an Archive & Install and selecting the Preserve Network users and Settings option? You could try using something more industrial like DiskWarrior first?
Whilst you have the chance make sure you have any relevant backups made and handy. Yes I know it's a brand new drive etc but you never know?

  • Some of my songs cut off randomly, and I have already restarted, etc.

Some of my songs will cut off, 10 seconds in or 2 minutes in. I have the newest software, I've restarted it, removed the content and put it back to factory settings. All that happens is that different songs start cutting off. I have a first generation touch, any ideas?

I keep having the exact same problem! Ive tried deleting all the songs and then reloading them and then I've tried restoring it and nothing seems to work. I would love to get help, but a phone call costs money (which it shouldn't) and the nearest Apple store is like 45 minutes away. Does anybody else have the issue that after you reload the songs on, the ones that had previously been cutting off work fine but other songs start cutting off? I would love to know what the **** is going on.

  • Volume resets on both headphones and speakers upon shutdown/restart

Every single time I shut down my MacBook Pro, it resets the volume to a little over halfway for headphones/external speakers, and halfway for the speakers in the MacBook Pro. I've tried resetting the VRAM and PRAM but I haven't been able to. Every time I hold down the keys it just boots to a normal login window. If someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong I would be very appreciative.

Worked beautifully! Thank you very much!!

Tried it reverting to an older version of Skype.  Didn't work.
But!  I believe I may have found the solution.
Here are the steps I took to solve the issue:
    1. Right click on the audio volume control icon -> Playback devices.  The Sound window and Playback tab should be open.
    2. Set Speakers/HP as both the Default Device and the Default Communications Device.
    3. Go to Skype>Tools>Audio Settings.  Set Speakers settings to: Speakers/HP (IDT High Audio Definition CODEC).
Hopefully this will work for anyone else who has the same or a similar problem.

  • MacBook Late 2008 (Unibody Aluminum) running Lion cannot shutdown, restart, or logout

After upgrading to mac os x lion, my macbook has not been able to restart or shutdown or even logout properly. This problem was not present when the laptop was in snow leopard. Currently, I am able to do a shutdown through the terminal by using the command:
    sudo shutdown -h now
or restart by using the command:
    sudo shutdown -r -h now
This is fine for most situations but when I am trying to install an update or a program that needs a restart, I am unable to do so. When still at the login screen, I am able to shutdown properly leading me to think that a process is preventing shutdown but I can't find anything in the console. The power button also becomes unresponsive (normally pressing it brings up the window asking whether to shutdown, restart, etc.) and can only be used to do a forced shutdown (i.e. holding it down for 10 seconds). The sleep, restart, and shutdown functions in the apple menu also do not work.
    Any ideas anyone?

I upgraded my powerbook G4 with 1 gb of ram with tiger recently and ever since, I can not reboot or shutdown without holding down the powerbutton. The system shuts down all programs and then hangs on the desktop with no applications running... just a blank screen.
If I press the powerbutton, the window that prompts you what you want to do (shutdown, restart) comes up, but does not do anything.
    I use file vault.
Any ideas? I can not find anything on this on any support site. I can not reinstall the OS again... as I can not restart into the CD or boot from a CD by holding down C.
    HELP
I'm about to trash this mac and by a PC!

Since you can't boot from the Tiger install disc to run Disk First Aid repair, you can run FSCK instead with instructions for doing so provided per this link.

  • Powerbook won't restart/ after interrupting the installaton of Leopard 10.5

Having just installed Leopard on an older imac with no problems, I went to install it on my powerbook. It got to the window for selecting the destination and I realised I didn't have enough room. In order to remove some data, I followed the directions to quit installation and selected the mac hard drive. It asked if it was ok to launch with 10.4.?? which I agreed to.
The Computer restarted but won't move off the grey screen with the little "processing" circle. I tried holding Option and ejected leopard, and selected the HD, but it still won't move on.
    HELP! have I lost everything?

Are you using the iMac install disks to try to install Leopard on the Powerbook? If so, it won’t work. The disks that come with a computer are specific to that model. The retail version of Leopard (black and purple disk, not gray) is needed to install on a computer that did not come with Leopard installation disks.
You didn’t say which Powerbook. Minimum requirements are: Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor, 512MB of physical RAM, DVD drive for installation.

  • I have a PowerBook G4 with a non-functioning monitor.  It used to work with an external monitor, but I reinstalled the OS, which cleared the display preferences and now when I restart it won't detect the external monitor. How do I fix?

I have a PowerBook G4 with a non-functioning monitor.  It used to work with an external monitor, but I reinstalled the OS, which cleared the display preferences and now when I restart it won't detect the external monitor. This means I can't use the computer anymore. How do I fix? I tried using the Command+F2 keyboard shortcut, but it doesnt' work.  It's possible that since I reinstalled the OS, it still needs to be set up, so there's only a welcome screen (but since I can't see it I'm not sure).

There is no limit to the number of times you can re-install Office on the same computer.
    You can activate by telephone:

Are you using the same ID for homesharing on all devices.
By the way shared libraries don't show up under either 'Music' or 'Libraries'.

  • New MacBook Pro 10.7.2 trying to connect to HP laserjet 1200 w wireless. Tried generic driver and hpdriver and gutenprint drivers. "Unable to connect due to error". Deleted prefs, restarted etc. Any ideas ?

Just purchased a MacBook Pro OS 10.7.2. Cannot get it to print with HP LaserJet 1200.
Connection is wireless, able to ping printer. (also tried  MacBook using ethernet).
This HP 1200 prints perfectly with another mac running Snow Leopard.
Tried HP 1200 driver, which, according to HP,  is not working with 10.7.2; They suggested Gutenprint
    tried generic printer from Mac, (message was printer is busy);
tried CUPS Gutenprint 5.0.2,(message says "unable to connect due to an error"
removed preferences and re-added printer, rebooted etc.
Any thoughts? I thought it was the driver, maybe there are other drivers out there or maybe it's something else???? Thanks

    Thanks for the replys.
After spending an hour plus, uninstalling and reinstalling drivers and still not able to print, my husband, sits down, plugs in an ethernet cable, reinstalls the printer with the ip, and it prints. !!! I'd already done that , but that was before I deleted the preferences and installed the Gutenprint driver. I think it was the new Gutenprint driver that did it.

  • 22" iMac desktop OSX 10.6.6 Snow Leopard and it won't boot. I've tried shift start, option command+P+R. It's stuck at the restart, all I see is the spinning wheel below the apple logo.

I have a 22" iMac desktop running OSX 10.6  Snow Leopard and it won't boot. I've tried shift start, option command P R. It's stuck at the restart, all I see is the spinning wheel below the apple logo. And I lost my OSX DVD is there any way to fix this? I just did a software update yesterday and have about 20GB left on my Hard drive. The last thing I did was try to install some plugin's for Pro Tools 8, but it wouldnt let me install so I restarted and now I'm screwed. Please Help!
other specs for my computer: 3.06GHz Intel core 2 duo processor 500 GB Serial ATA hard drive, iSight, magic mouse, wireless mac keyboard
    iPod classic 160GB (Late 2009), Mac OS X (10.6.6)

You have to consider the possibility the hard drive may be dying.    If your data isn't backed up, try one of the tools below:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1689
Once you are sure your data is backed up, we can examine other possibilities.  In the meantime call AppleCare for your original installation DVDs.  You may need them.
