Leopard and SnowLeopard recognized filesystems: how many besides HFS,HFS+?

I am interested in establishing a multi-boot HDD,but I want Leopard 10.5.8
to recognize and change information to the other systems,so what filesystems
do the Leopard kernel recognize(read or write)?
I want to install several Linuxes and BSD,so are ext3,ext4,ReiserFS,ZFS recognized by Leopard(read/write).
Thanks.

then get ready to be disappointed. none of them are supported by OS X. look in /System/Library/Filesystems. what you see there is what you get. there are various open source projects to provide support for other file systems in OS X but you'll have to search the web to see what state they are in. there was a big one actually maintained by apple to do it for ZFS which was supposed to be used in future versions of OS X but that project got completely canned just a couple of days ago.
Thanks.

I have a presentation to make to a customer and need to know how many educational apps are there for the iPad/iPod? More specifically special education apps.
    Thanks

Keep in mind as well that not all apps are "created equal".  Some are really good, and others are not very good.  You might also want to look at some education sites for recommendations.  An example of a general iPads in education forum is

but I imagine some exist for special education needs as well.  Our healthcare organization is using some apps for working with autistic children and find them very helpful.

  • FileVault in Snow Leopard and case-sensitive filesystem?

Does FileVault in Snow Leopard support case-sensitive filesystems?
I know it doesn't in Leopard but was wondering if the situation had changed with Snow Leopard.

    V.K. wrote:
I don't know the answer to that but why are you using a case sensitive file system?
it's generally a bad idea not only because of filevault but also because many apps will not work well with it and some like many Adobe apps won't run on it at all.
I find it amusing how Apple tout the virtues of their operating system being Unix-based when they allow MSDOS-style bastardisations like this.
I've been using OS X for five years in case sensitive mode because I write software for (proper) Unix systems for a living. I need to be able to connect to a Unix-hosted version control system and know that my Mac isn't going to throw a wobbler just because there are two different files which would have the same name under a case-insensitive file system.
It's a shame that I am therefore denied access to Filevault but, from what I hear, Filevault causes all sorts of problems with Time Machine backups anyway, so perhaps it's for the best.
I have to say, in five years I haven't encountered a single piece of software that has a problem with case-sensitivity although, admittedly, I've never voluntarily used any Adobe software (does Adobe Air count)?

  • Am using Macbook pro mid 2010 running on OSX 10.9.5. It does not read my old Seagate back up plus ITB ext hard disk which opens and works on snow leopard. The back ups were made on snow leopard and mountain lion. How do I make it work on Mavericks?

I have been making back ups on a Seagate Back up plus drive on a macbook pro running on Mountain lion. Sadly the mac was stolen and all I had was the seagate back up. I tried opening it on my old iMac running on snow leopard and after several visits to this forum managed to open it. The data was safe and sound. Now I have received a hand me down macbook pro which runs on osx 10.9.5. I'm assuming there is a compatability issue as the drive does not come on at all when I hook it up to the usb port. I checked the seagate drive once again on the imac and its light came on on that system. Then I suspected there may be a problem with this macbook pro usb port. But it seemed to work fine when i hooked my camera cord into it. Is it that I must reinstall mavericks. In which case how do I back up before reformatting or reinstalling. BTW I did the command+ R thingy and repaired my internal Hard disc which was showing errors. What do I do next, your help is most appreciated if you have had a similar problem.

Your 2010 MBP would be able to handle Yosemite, but I would strongly suggest that you get the current problem sorted out before trying to upgrade to Yosemite. I'd also recommend another backup that isn't created by Time Machine if you are thinking of upgrading. SuperDuper and CarbonCopyCloner can make bootable clones of hard drives. If you clone your existing system to a fresh external drive, you would be able to boot from that drive and recover quickly in the event that your Yosemite upgrade didn't work out. Time Machine backups are not 100% reliable.
It's possible that, if your internal HD is the one that shipped with your MBP in 2010, it may be failing. If it keeps needing repairs, that is probably a sign that it is approaching the end of its useful life.
Have you run Disk Utility's Repair tool on the external drive as well?
I mentioned the hub because some people have reported here that attaching their USB 3 drives through a USB 2 hub solved some disconnection problems. A good-quality powered USB 2 hub won't cost much.
My most recent brush with random disconnections involved a nice new OWC drive enclosure. I used the cable that came with the drive, but the drive kept disconnecting. Using a different cable solved the problem. You wouldn't expect that what appeared to be a high quality cable would be a problem straight out of the box, but it was.

  • How do I Restore from Time Machine after I have reinstalled my system software (Snow Leopard and then Lion) ?, How do I Restore from Time Machine after I have reinstalled my system software (Snow Leopard and then Lion) ?

I have never done this before, so can someone explain in detail how I reintall my system software and then restore from Time Machine please ?

Your profile indicates that you currently have an older version of Snow Leopard (10.6.2).  In order to install Lion, a prerequisite is the latest version of Snow Leopard (10.6.8).  Perhaps a few more details would be helpfull in solving your problem. ex. If all you want to do is to upgrade to Lion, a restoration of data is unneccessary.  Download the latest version of Snow Leopard and then download (purchase) and install Lion.  User data will remain intact.
If I am missing something, please elaborate.

  • I would like to upgrade my operating system, but still have Leopard and don't know how to make the "leap" to newer software.

I have a makbook pro, running with Leopard (10.5.8).  I know that I missed both Lion and Snow Leopard and want to know the best way to upgrade.  Do I need to buy both in addition to Mountain Lion?  Will my computer even run Mountain Lion?  I need step by step instructions because everyone I talk to just says "Just upgrade it" Thanks.

    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
If you need to purchase Snow Leopard you can still purchase a copy from Apple's online store's telesales agents.[1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775.] Ask for a Sales Representative.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
If you need to purchase Lion call 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. Ask for a Sales Representative. They will check your Apple ID, and email you a code and instructions.  The cost is $29.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download.

how many other are 100% now?

Ok ive just got all mine sorted and it seems to be working correctly now, i was getting read outs of 80c on load and 60 normal, but ive got it down to 70 normal (going to flash the ram in a moment to see if that helps)
Ive used a combination of things to cool it down, sat down and wrapped all the cables up with spiral wrap.. moved all cables away from the motherboard and fans and placed around the edge of the case... mounted a fan over the PCI slots.. sounds odd but its working a treat and not much difference in noise.
But my Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu was not tight to the CPU which i didnt notice until i was mounting it back on with the supplied black bracket and back place.. I realised the bracket was to high and i couldnt screw it down enough without the feet for the bracket digging into the board.. i took it off and screwed directly onto the plate.. all was well didnt over tighten but got it so the cpu fan wouldnt move.
I was going to replace the bracket when i built the machine a coulpe of days ago but they looked identical (at the time) so decided not to.. am i going to have problems are as its working it will continue to work fine? (which is what i think)

  • I have leopard and want to upgrade to lion. I have a macbook about 3 years old and wonder if I should just get a new macbook pro ($$$) instead. Is it worth the headache to upgrade to snow leopard and then lion? How does lion perform on an intel core duo 2

I have a macbook about 3 years old running leopard. I amwondering ifitwouldbeworth the trouble to install snowleopardand then lion ($60.00) or just buy a new macbook pro ($$$$$$). How does lion perform on an intel core 2 duo processor?

I have Lion installed on a Mini with a C2D processor. The same Mini has Snow Leopard on another partition and there is no noticeable difference in operational speed between the two OS's. But compared to my new MBPro 17" with a 2.83GHz i7, the Mini running Lion is noticeably slower. So if you can afford anew MBPro, then I would get it because you will probably be unhappy with the performance of Lion on the older MBPro. The other benefit of getting a new MBPro with Lion is that if you have any Power PC applications currently on the old MBPro, which will not operate in Lion, then you still have the ability to use them. Many users got stung by upgrading to Lion, only to find they could no longer use the older PPC applications.

  • Problem with Snow Leopard and FileVault after upgrading - how to solve it?

I recently installed Snow Leopard in my MacBook Pro, where I had FileVault running in my old Tiger. After installation and shutting down, it is now impossible to open and log in my user account. I get the message: "Your home folder, which is protected by FileVault, didn't open. It needs to be repaired." After clicking OK, it reads: "You are unable to log in to the user account "(my name)" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred." What to do?

you don't have to reinstall. just enable the root account and log in as root. you can access your backup from there. see this link on how to enable root.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1278
use your snow leopard disk instead of leopard disk as that link suggests.

  • The 27 inch iMac and the thunderbolt display how many hertz

i want to play 3d games so i ask this question.

Please navigate on this page to Support - Tech Specs - then find the model you're interested in. That is where you will find specifications for each model.
You also need to be more specific when asking a question, 27' iMacs come in a variety of configurations with different GPUs and CPUs, RAM etc so  you need to specify which iMac, which GPU and which CPU you're most interested in. Also you need to state in which OS you plan to run the games OS X or MS Windows. If you plan to run Windows then you need to specifiy how you will be loading Windows Boot Camp or virtualization.
In other words there are many factors to take into account.
You can also look at the variety of benchmark sites that test that kind of thing. Use Google to find them.

  • Finally using SPAM quarantine and want to know how many e-mails are being released

We have two C660s and one M660 and we are finally using the SPAM quarantine functionality on the M660 and so far it has been awesome.   For my pilot group I have the spam thresholds set as low as recommended by the GUI at 50 (positive) and 25 (suspected)...   First off, if I change these numbers will I see noticiable differences in what is allowed through and what isn't?
My real question is, is there an easy way to see what mail is being released by users from the SPAM quarantine?  Originally I had a content filter setup that was working..   but now it appears that when users are releasing e-mails from the quarantine it is skipping any type of content filtering..  From what I can tell, e-mails are still being routed from the M660 to one of the two C660s for delivery..  but in the mail logs I see information like:

    Jason

    Hello Jason,
one thing about the trhesholds, the defaults are 50/90 for suspected and positive spam, and that usually works for most customers, in some cases if still spam gets trough we suggest to modify that to 40/80, but you should not get any lower, as this will just increase the number of false positives. In general, the antispam engine delivers a value way above or below the thresholds, means scores are always either below 10 (no spam) or above 90 (spam), very few are inbetween this range, so usually the default setting works.
About the information of which user released a message, there is unfortunately no direct way to get this done. You might try this approach:
    1. mail_logs: Look for the MID of the message when its getting injected to the SMA, note that this is not the same MID as in message tracking.
    2. mail_logs: Look for the message getting released, and note the time stamp:
6 Aug 2012 13:29:21 (GMT) Start Message 10054459 ICID 0 release from Spam Quarantine
    3. Do a
    CLI: grep timestamp euqgui_logs
with the timestamp you retreived  from the mail logs (just use the Day, hour, and minute part), this should get you the log lines for the particular minute, check them for the name of the user who was accessing the GUI at that time.
    Hope that helps,
    Andreas

  • Snow Leopard and Juniper Network Connect/How to temporarily disable Bonjour

    Hi All,
I have encountered a problem with Juniper Network Connect running on my MacBook Air. I can connect successfully to my company's VPN but on my MacBook Air Junipers Network Connect started to dis- and reconnect in changing time intervals.
After some googling I am pretty sure that it has something to do with the Bonjour service changing the routing tables. I wanted to confirm this and activated "Back to my mac" on my MacBook Pro which up to now did not had any problems connecting to my company's VPN. Now it has the same issues.
My question is whether there is any way to temporarily disable Bonjour, ideally via Apple script. Up to now the only solutions I found were to either
    - disable mDNSResponder which would also prevent accessing any websites or
    - disable multicast advertisements (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3789?viewlocale=en_US)
The latter approach includes editing a properties file and restarting the mac, thus would be less than ideal for just quickly dis- and enabling bonjour. Furthermore I am not quite sure whether this really solves the problem of updating the routing table.
    Any advise is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    equinox

If you are using an Airport or Airport Express base station: go to Utilities>Airport Utility. When it's found the Airport, click on 'Manual Setup'. In the next pane, click on the 'Wireless' tab; when that pane opens click on 'Wireless Network Options...'. Check 'Create a closed network'.
If you are using another manufacturer's wireless router you will need to look at their instructions, but the principle is the same - it may say something like 'Hide SSD'.
