Leopard and the Mini G4

I tried to upgrade my old mini (G4 with 256MB) to Leopard this morning. I put the Leopard DVD into the optical drive and the start install screen came up. I told it to restart and the mini restarte3d from the DVD. The gray apple and spinning circle came up. That was it. I tried powering off after 25 minutes and held down the C key. Same thing. Apple support asked me to try the Leopard DVD on my other computer and it still booted. They had me boot Tiger on the mini.
Best guess is not enough memory to boot the install APP for Leopard.
Anyone else had this problem?

Correct. Leopard requires at least 512mb of ram and will not install with anything less.

    Good Morning,
I have a MacBook Pro 15" and my warranty just ran out! I partitioned my harddrive into two partitions, one with Snow Leopard and the other with microsoft. This morning I turned on my Macbook Pro and it will not boot into Snow Leopard. I shut it off took out the battery, reinstalled the battery. Then I put in the Snow Leopard CD and booted up to disk utility and The Snow Leopard partion would not show up?? I do see the microsoft partion.
I also rebooted holding down the shift key and still no Snow Leopard
Could you please tell me what I can do, what keys do I press on restart any advice to get Snow leopard back.
    thank you.

Have you restarted holding down the Opt key?  That procedure should give you a gray screen with all of the partitions that exist.  Then select the SL partition for boot.  Also go to System Preferences and Startup Disk, unlock the lock and select the SL partition as the default boot partition, then relock.

Not all the sound docks accept both analogue and optical on the auxillary input - I don't think the portable ones does but may be wrong - check the user manual.
As I said earlier all the mini optical (min Toslink) adapter does it make the optical connector fit a smaller socket, it does not convert digital audio to analogue for an analogue only auxillary input.

I used Roxio VHS to DVD for Mac (have iMac with Snow Leopard) and the audio does not synch with the video when playing in iMovie.  Any suggestions to fix?

Thanks for the reply.  I tried playing with detaching the audio in iMovie, but with 20+ hours of video to correct, it would take too long.  After 28 hours, Corel/Roxio tech support replied that it is a known bitrate mismatch problem and they have no real fix.  I strongly suggest not to buy this product.

  • Can i use the HDMI port and the Mini displayport to HDMI adapter simultaneously to switch between two displays?

I just bought a new Mac Mini and was hoping that i can connect my TV via the HDMI port and also connect a 19" monitor via the Minidispaly port to HDMI adapter or the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter. This way i can pick between having the screen mirrored to my tv, or having the screen displayed at my desk.
    Is this possible?

Yes. Note the resolution via HDM is limited to
This model simultaneously supports 1920x1200 on an HDMI or a DVI display (using the included HDMI-to-DVI adapter) and2560x1600 on a Thunderbolt or Mini DisplayPort display or even a VGA display (with an optional Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter, which is compatible with the Thunderbolt port).

  • Snow Leopard and the Flashback Malware

I am visiting my elderly mother and (like an idiot) responded to a prompt to update Adobe Flash last night. I have checked for the presence of DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES per C|Net's article on how to detect and remove the Flashback malware and it is not present in Mac OSX, Safari or Firefox. Can I relax? Do I still need to completely disable Flash in Preferences? She does not see well and is trained to automatically update via Software Update for Mac.

  • Custom monitor profiles and the mini....

I'm thinking of getting the new mac mini, and I see the video card supports two monitors. Does it also support two custom color profiles for people using monitor calibration hardware/software? My old macbook supports an external display, but I can only store one color profile for the laptop lcd. I'd like both external monitors on the mini to be color profiled if possible. I'm an amateur photographer, so this is a wanted feature if I upgrade my computer. Thanks for any information.

I heard on one other forum that it will from one user. That user did not say how they knew it could, or whether they tried it and it worked. I went to the Apple store and the salesman resorted to asking the genius bar (i had a genius bar appointment figuring the question was too technical for a salesman, so I waited 20 minutes only to have them ask the genius bar anyway). The genius bar answer? They googled it and found a few forums where users, not mac techs, said that yes it would handle two profiles. I'm thinking, what, the genius bar GOOGLED it to find information on their own products technical abilitied? Don't they think I did that, for over a week, before going there? Wow, totally unimpressed with the Apple genius bar now.

  • Snow Leopard and the original MacBook Air?

My original MBA has an Intel graphics chipset. Does anyone know if the upcoming release of Snow Leopard will run on it and just not take advantage of the graphics enhancements?
(I'm pretty sure I read the footprint will be smaller than Leopard and I'm hoping to benefit from that...the 80 GB hard drive is a little tight..otherwise I'm very happy with it)
    Thanks.

I have the original MBA version and am running SL. No problems.
Same here, and quite snappy too.

  • Leopard and the Samsung CLP-300

I cannot print with manual duplex! its killing me i cant print out my school notes... i spent a few hours talking to samsung and they told me its an issue with leopard!? ... this is my first experience with a mac after being a pc user for my whole life... I used to sell these macs saying they were very awesome only to find myself in trouble.. =(
if someone has a solution for me. or knows some kind of work around this issue with my macbook pro and my samsung clp-300 so that i can select to print double sided [manual duplex] please let me know! email me at [email protected] please!

I have exactly the same problem on my new MacBook Pro using the CLP-600N - I have the latest model as of March 2008 - I can print from all programs except MS word 2008, which prints blank pages and the print preview shows nothing.
It took the apple store about an hour to figure out it was the printer driver but they didn't anything in their data base about the problem - this blog is the first time I have seen any data on this problem.
Has anyone actually corrected the problem? Obviously this is a pain in the butt and the Samsung printer is our office printer and it works for everyone else including a MacBook Pro that is about 6 months old - go figure that one out.

  • Upgrade to Snow Leopard and the software says I need 5GB just to install?

I have a MAC OSX 10.5.8 and want to upgrade to Snow Leopard. I only have 2 GB of memory and the software says I need 5GB just to install. Do I really need that much more memory?

Apple recommends 2GB of RAM as an installation prerequisite for Maverick. At least half of this available memory will be consumed by Maverick while it is running. The remainder will not support very many concurrent applications, or open browser tabs, before exhausting available memory. The consequence is that your Mac will run slower than it should with Mavericks.
You be the judge. That early 2008 MBP can only expand to 6GB. I know, had one.

  • DVDs and the Mini Mac

We recently purchased blank DVD-R disks from Staples. When we insert them into the Mini Mac drive, they just sit there for about 30 seconds and then pop back out. No message appears on the monitor.
When they are put into the eMac, a message screen appears that enables us to record. No problems.
    Any ideas?

The slot-loading superdrive in the Mini has had a reputation for being "fussy" about what media it likes. I would try a different brand of media for starters. (And for data-backup, DVD+R is considered to be a bit more reliable than DVD-R, though for movies, that won't make much difference.)
You don't say how old your Mini is -- or whether it has successfully used different brands of media.
If the Mini has some miles on it, and brands that formerly worked no longer work, then you might need to use a DVD lens cleaning disc.
Another option to consider if you do a lot of DVD burning is to get an external , tray-loading, firewire dvd burner. They will generally be more tolerant of different media brands and sizes, and will generally burn faster. Some examples here:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/
Another thing to check is the settings in Apple Menu > System Preferences > CDs & DVDs, "When you insert a blank DVD". Probably should be set to "Ask what to do"

  • Just got the new 2010 Mac Pro and the Mini DVI ports are dead

    Anyone else having this issue?
Anyone know if they need to be "enabled" somehow?

Yes, the adapter does seem to go all the way up to the plastic shell. And the the adapters and displays work fine when driven by either of my MacBook Pros. And there seems to be some sort of connection being made because when the adapter is unplugged, the monitor goes through its typical "I'm unplugged" test mode phases with color screens and so forth, but when I plug it in to the Mac Pro, it goes black.

  • OS X Leopard + and the cost effeLarge Format scanner, what is their future?

    Hello Everyone,
My question is simple..."Is there (or will there be) a company who puts out a decent Large Format Scanner (12 x 18 inches lets say) for the OS X Operating System?
There is ONE I know of, the Mustek scanner (Bearpaw? about 200 $) that'll work on OS X 10.4, but only after an elaborate patching installation, and only then, the scanner only works for 25 scans or so, and you have to reinstall everything all over again.
I guess I cold use my Boot Camp PC Partition and use any PC formatted scanner but danggit, I wish there was a similar model for OS X and at a comparable price, it seems , everyone has forgotten about this major whole in the scanner/OS X market.
    Any suggestions folks?
    Thank you.

    Indeed
Oly Crystal BAlls I know that work are David Lynch' and the Wicked Witch of the West, None here. I imagine most folks who require a scanner thats 12" x 18" probably...
    A. Hook a Mustek up to a PC and transfer files over...
    B. Find a Print Shop or Production House to do it @ $$$ per scan...
    C. Stitch the **** image together in a Photo editor
    D. Come on to Apple Discussions group to raise issue in the hopes some intern at a scanner development company finds this thread online and wanting to climb the corporate ladder gets some sketches together and prototypes to market of the most incredible Large Format scanner thats formatted for both OS X and PC....Wishful thinking I know....

The combo update may replace anything you have inadvertently deleted.
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
You can reapply it over the top of any previously downloaded version.  I see that your profile says 10.6.8.
Then software update to pick up any new security, iTunes updates.
