Leopard archive install - migrate from time machine??
I was told to do an archive install by the guys at the genius bar today to fix some really strange lockups. It appears to have fixed my issues but now I'd like to get all my apps / settings back. Is there an easy way to do this via my time machine backup?
if you did an archive and install it should have migrated all your applications and also all your user settings provided you chose that option. are you sure it was an archive and install and not an erase and install? do you have a Previous Systems folder at the top level of your hard drive? you CAN use Migration assistant to migrate your user settings and apps but if you really did an A&I there should be no need.

Hello, here's the situation.
I've done a clean install, for various reasons, I've got backups including one done just before the clean install. Following directions somewhere else I set up a user account called "test" just for the purposes of reimporting PART of my old system, since one of the reasons I did the clean install was to clean up my system (get rid of all those little ghosts of old programs, the old programs themselves, files and settings I not longer want etc.) so I didn't want to just import the whole thing. So I imported just the user account and a few folders such as music and photos that I knew I wanted back on. Then I restarted so that it would log back into my old user account that's been restored using Migration assistant. So far so good. I enter time machine and start restoring Applicatons, their associated support files, a few preference panes, some other files and folders I want back on, so and and so forth. Then I enter my old home folder and see that many of the subfolders I don't have access to, I check their permissions with Get Info and see that read/write access has been granted to my test account, which is ridiculous since it didn't exist when they were backed up. Some searching reveals that on the first Time Machine back-up after a restore like this it should as at the start whether I want to inherit he old backups, so I tell Time machine to do a backup, figure that it shouldn't take much, seeing as there's nothing new, and I've put it all in the same place as in the backup. It doen't give me any such prompt, instead just starts indexing/preparing hundreds of thousands of files, and tells me that the backup should take about 135 gb of space. I stop the backup, give up on working this out myself, and come here. Help?
Of note
The "harddrive" (it's a partition, I've got Windows on the other part) is not named the same as it was in the backups, would this affect it?I'm not familiar with Lightroom.
Where is the "Lightroom 2 catalog" folder in the second message, and what are it's permissions?
Note that +Repair Permissions+ only repairs permissions on files installed by OSX or certain Apple apps, and you should use the version of Disk Utility that's on your OSX volume, not your Install disc. See: [About Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1452]. -
New install - migrate from Time Machine stuck at Transferring Information
Just got a new MBP and hooked it up to my USB drive to let it run overnight migrating my old settings and Applications.
The bar's full, it says "Less than a minute remaining", but appears to be stuck. It's transferring my Applications folder apparently, or so it claims.
It's about 40 GB of data all told.
Any ideas? I'm going to try Firewire next, or copying my Documents folder manually so the amount of data is smaller.Same issue transferring via FireWire 800 cables form an older iMac to a new one. Stuck at 1 minute for a very long time until the new Mac gave a message that the other Mac had stopped responding. It gave me the option of terminating the transfer, which I did. Then, it congratulated me on a successful transfer. Unfortunately, things are working poorly. For instance, iPhoto can't find my library. iMovie can't find my movies, etc.
Transfer help welcome. -
I migrated from old machine with Leopard to new machine with Lion. After migration, I had all photos, music, applications, etc. This morning there is no music, no photos and missing programs. I have now downloaded the fix they put out yesterday. Can I simply redo a new migration from Time Machine to get those things back?
Monty,
If you used Migration Assistant what has probably occurred is it created another user account. Log out of your current account and see if there is another account, if so log into that one and see if your information is there. -
I had to format my internal disk drive on my MacBook Pro, and reload Mountain Lion 10.8.3. The startup assistant could not see my external disk drive with the Time Machine backup files. After many tries I told it to skip restoring the files and let it boot up. I was able to see my 1 TByte external drive and could see the Time Machine files using Finder.
I started the Migration Assistant and told it to migrate from Time Machine Files on an external drive. It also did not see the backup drive. The only drive icon it showed was the Macintosh HD (my internal drive).
Isn't it supposed to show you the drive you are moving the files from? I tried starting it and it looked like it was going to try to migrate the files from the internal drive (to where I don't know, back to itselfl?) Or do I just not understand. Is it seeing the external drive, without identifying it (in the Migration Asst,)?
Really looks like it is going to back up the internal HD with files that are on the internal HD and not from Time Machine.
I need to restore my files and have been told I need to do so using Migration Assistant and not Time Machine.
Help pleae and soon, need to get my taxes finished!
Thanks!I'm surprised that no one replied to this. But I learned a few things that may be helpful to some of you with this same question.
When you restore data from an external disk drive with Time Machine files on it. As you move through the dialog (in either System Startup or in the Migration Assistant) it will ask if you want to restore from an external disk with Time Machine files. If you select this option, it will show you only one Icon. You will expect to see your external disk drive listed as the source of the restore. The icon that is shown will look like your ilnternal drive and will be labeled something like Macintosh HD. That is not your internal drive, but is your backup drive. It is labeled the same as your internal disk drive and it is telling you that you have found the backup for your internal disk drive.
Would be nice if Apple would put a note of explanation about this as part of that dialog. I wasted several hours trying to make it work Finally I took a chance and selected the drive shown and it did restore my system. I ended up with two users since I did it from Migration Assistant. Had I done it from the System Startup, there would only be the one user. -
When migrating from time machine to a new hard drive, not all is transferd, only partial documents, applications , settings etc. How can I migrate the latest back-up with all the content.

If you want to use Time Machine to recover the contents of one of its a backups to a new drive, follow the instructions in Mac OS X 10.6: Recovering your entire system. Note that you must select the "Restore System From Backup" option from the Utilities menu of the Installer disc to do this.
Also note that if you are transferring files to a hard drive to be used with a different computer, you should use Migration Assistant instead. This intentionally will not copy everything because some settings, applications, etc. are not compatible computer-to-computer. Migration Assistant will copy everything that is. -
When migrating from time machine to my new hard drive, it migrates the first back-up I made several years ago. How can I migrate the latest back-up ? I need time machine to migrate the latest back-up. Should I delete the older back-ups ?
As noondaywitch says, it should use the latest backup.
Where are your backups (external HD, Time Capsule, etc.)?
It sounds like there are two separate sets, and you're not connected to the right set. -
My Safari "quits unexpectedly" each time I try to start it on my new MacBook Air after I transferred it from my MacBook via migration from time machine backup disk.

Login Error after installing Lion and migrating from time machine
I cannot log into Lion under my user setting, I am getting the error: "You are unable to login to the File Vault User account {name} at this time."
Apparently I did not turn off file vault before upgrading to Lion and when I set up Lion I did not migrate from time capsule because it was not finding it even thought the firewire was plugged in so I went ahead and filled out my name and set up a password. I was in Lion and attached the external drive and finally it read it so I migrated the information. I'm not sure if I didn't check the transfer "user" box or the Lion password does not match my File Vault password but now I cannot get into Lion.
I contacted Apple Support and they told me I would not be able to access my old user info because it is locked. I tried to reinstall Lion and get back to the screen where it prompts me for a password so I could change it to my file vault password and cannot get back to that screen. I also cannot create a new user - I can only use guest.
I tried reset password from the terminal and this did not work.
Is there any way I can do a clean Lion install and try the migration again to make sure the passwords and user box is checked?
Please help... I'm desperate! You say Downloads folder has never been excluded and you can't find the Downloads Folder. Do this... OpenFinder then in Finder select your Downloads Folder, open Time Machine if your Downloads Folder has been backed up, Time Machine will take you directly to your Downloads Folder backups.

Problem after migration from time machine
I recently changed the hard disk in my macbook to a bigger one,
and then used migration assistant and my time machine backup to restore the system.
Everything seems to work just fine except aperture.
about 90% of my projects do not show any thumbnails, just outlined gray boxes with a file name
when I click on them I get to see the photo in question but when I click "show master" aperture says "master image offline" (and does not show the photo anymore)
my Library is referenced and the masters are located on the computers hard disk itself (not on an external one) and they are all there !
(i.e. they were perfectly transfered from time machine)
when I first opened aperture after the migration I got a message that the library was corrupted, I clicked repair and this produced a recovered folder
with a recovered project which as far as I can see is empty ?
I tried the 3 trouble shooting tools (repair permissions, repair database and rebuild database) none of which changed anything
I was going to try to restore the library file from time machine but now time machine says that I do not have permission to acces the pictures folder !?
(at least not on any backup older than the last one, which was done after the system was migrated)
I am starting to get stuck here, I found several references online to the same problem but no real solution.
Any ideas?OK, so I did a clean install of snow leopard from the installation DVD and then used setup assistant to restore from time machine.
Since time machine had already made backups after I migrated for the first time it basically restored the system
to its previous state (with aperture not working properly), it did however restore the admin account which I had already deleted.
This allowed me to access my older time machine backups.
When I tried to restore the aperture library file (after first deleting the current one and emptying the trash)
I got a window saying copying 0kb from 10,68GB that just hung there
after checking my user account I found an aperture library file of about 6GB, I deleted this and did the restore again and let the window saying copying 0kb of 10,68GB run for half an hour, I then found an aperture library file in my account of 11GB. I opened aperture and guess what? exactly the same as before! no thumbnails and no access to masters except for about 10 projects (in fact every time I try this aperture makes previews for exactly 608 photos !?
I might try to copy the libary file from the old hard disk if I find something to mount it, but I am starting tho think that i will just have to reimport the entire library, and forget about the versions and be thankfull that I at least saved the masters :-( -
Restoring Leopard after installing SL with Time Machine with only a SL Disk
I just bought Snow Leopard and I haven't installed it yet. I am currently running Leopard on my MacBook Pro. I have heard of issued with Adobe CS4 and I'm afraid of having such issues, so before I install SL, I want to make sure I can revert to Leopard in case I have problems with Adobe CS4 applications. I use Time Machine, and I know that to restore the entire system from Time Machine, I need a bootable OS X install disk.
My problem is the following: I do not have my Leopard install DVD at hand, it is in another country and I won't have access to it for a few months. So I was wondering whether I can restore my current system (after installing Snow Leopard) using Time Machine, by booting from the Snow Leopard install disk.
So basically: If I installed Snow Leopard, and wanted to go back to before I installed it, could I simply insert the Snow Leopard install disk, and restore Leopard, along with my apps and documents, from my Time Machine backup? Or do I need the Leopard disk to do that?
Thanks!Mate Dobray wrote:

You shouldn't have anything but maybe minimal CS4 problems under Sno. But, anything can happen.

I have never done exactly what you say, but my opinion is that it will work.

I think it should work as said above. No guarantees though. It would be better is you bought a firewire external and cloned your existing system to the external to be safe--considering the difficulties that might arise since you don't have your Leopard disk.
Can you at least back your data up separately on your TM disk? Then, worst case is that you might have to do an erase and install of Sno if your first install doesn't work well and then figure out how to deal with lost apps if TM let's you down.

Going back to leopard from snow leopard Can I restore from Time machine
My Imac continues to lock up about three times a day since I went to Snow Leopard.
I want to go back to Leopard where I did not have these problems.
Can I reformat and do a clean install and then restore everything from time machine even though the back up is from Snow Leopard? You can restore the system to any previous dated state shown in your Time Machine backups. However, this will not preserve anything you created after that date. You can also restore individual files & folders from later backups but you may or may not be able to use files you created using Snow Leopard while running Leopard, depending on the parent application & if it was updated to use a new file format with Snow Leopard.
It is generally much better to resolve the issues you have with Snow Leopard & continue using it than to try to do this. Most issues are fairly easy to resolve. If you want help with that, let us know. -
Restore Archived Lion Mail from Time Machine
I deleted a mailbox, thinking I could add it back, and synch with the server. That worked fine, but I forgot that I had archived a whole bunch of mail on that account. Now I want to retrieve the old mail. I have a fresh Time Machine backup. How do I retrieve my archived mail from Time Machine for a deleted account?
If Time Machine was backing up before you deleted the account, you can try to enter Time Machine from
~/Library/Mail. See if the deleted account is in there. -
Reformatting and installing data from Time Machine?
Hi guys,
I am new to this forum. I do not know if anyone of you have done this but I would like to know regarding reformatting a macbook and then using the data that has been backed-up by Time Machine to install back to the macbook.
I know the instructions on how to reformat the mac, but I would like to know is it possible to install back the data from Time Machine to the macbook. Do the application, photos, songs etc from previous macbook (before reformat) appear in the new reformatted macbook by using Time Machine.
ThanksI have done this before and I have felt the pain. It is possible to restore from a back up. Just boot up from the Mac OS X install disk and then plug in your external HD. After that, you go to Utilities--> Restore from Time Machine Back up. After that, it will lead you to a page showing you all the full backups that you have done in the past. After that, it will be easy for you to restore everything. I wouldn't recommend that you use Time Machine in the future. Unless you have been consistently backing up your HD, the software inside might be corrupted. I recommend using something like CCCloner as it makes a bootable clone of your HD, which TM doesn't offer.

Clean install Snow Leopard and transfer files from Time Machine?
Hello,
I have a computer that is getting s fresh clean install of Snow Leopard. I know how to go about doing this. However, I want to be able to transfer the files back using Time Machine. The Time Capsule has backups from 3 computers. How do I select the right computer files from the backup? The Mac Pro also has a second hard drive intsalled. Is it best to wipe it clean and then load the data from the Time Machine?
Thanks! If you have a second HD with nothing on it, why not do the fresh install on that, then use Setup Assistant to bring over all the files from the HD you've been backing up to TM rather than TM itself? That way, you have the most direct transfer and a backup of the original too.

I am writing a program that allows a user to upload a file and store that file in the database. That works great. Getting that file to display correctly is not working as well. I store, along with the binary data, the file type i.e. image/gif, applic

Automator doesn't wait for app to finish launching.
During "watch me do" actions that lauch an app Automator does not wait for the app to launch. This seems like a bug since Automator does infact know it is launching an app, this shouldn't be something that should require a sleep every time.
