Leopard archive & install problem (10.5.8 - 10.5.2)

hello all,
part of the problem is stated in the subject header - i was initially running 10.5.8, but after a failed startup this morning, i had the apple store take a look at it. they archived/installed... leaving me with 10.5.2 instead. i believe this is ill-advised(?)
the main issues im having now are:
1) 20gb of space i want to reclaim - 14.5 is sitting in the 'Previous Systems' folder. the rest of it is a mystery. i notice that i now have garageband, iMovie & iPhoto - which i previously trashed. i'd like to remove those again (along with their baggage wherever it may dwell).
2) iTunes no longer operates because the library was "created by a newer version"
3) general concern over system version conflict.
so the main questions are:
1) what can i safely delete?
2) what can i safely swap from the 'Previous System' folder? and when should i do - before or after re-upgrading to 10.5.8?
3) how bad is it really?(archive/installing to a earlier build) are there other issues possibly lurking??
I appreciate everyone's help in this matter, these forums are great. the apple store genius(no sarcasm) who gave me 10.5.2... coulda done better. but hey, at least i'm back up & running, so he still gets props.
thankx again and happy holiday:)

See the following: How to get files from a previous home directory after Archive and Install. This article will help you move things from the Previous System Folder into the new system. However, before you do that you want to upgrade to the system your were previously running by opening Software Update and installing the needed updates. Do this before you start moving files/folders from the PSF.

  • Leopard archive install - migrate from time machine??

I was told to do an archive install by the guys at the genius bar today to fix some really strange lockups. It appears to have fixed my issues but now I'd like to get all my apps / settings back. Is there an easy way to do this via my time machine backup?

if you did an archive and install it should have migrated all your applications and also all your user settings provided you chose that option. are you sure it was an archive and install and not an erase and install? do you have a Previous Systems folder at the top level of your hard drive? you CAN use Migration assistant to migrate your user settings and apps but if you really did an A&I there should be no need.

My beloved Mac was acting sort of funky so I decided to do the old "archive & install"; everything is peachy except I'm having no luck whatsoever restoring both my address book and my mail with all the contacts and mailboxes intact; what am I missing?

Did you select the option to preserve user settings?

  • Leopard OS install problem on restart

I just picked up the Leopard OS to upgrade my 12" PowerBook Titanium and cannot get it to install. When I open the install app it prompts me to restart. When I do, it brings up a grey screen with a black message box that has the power symbol in the background. The message says (in 4 or 5 languages) "you need to restart your computer. hold the power button for a few seconds or press the restart button" (I'm paraphrasing here. No matter how many times I do it, it gives me the same message. I've made sure theres enough space for the install and tried restarting holding the "c" key, nothing has worked. Please help...

Does your machine exhibit kernel panics any other times? If not, then there is something that the powerbook does not like about this DVD. What happens if you insert the disk DURING proper running (rather than trying to start up from disk)?
Or have you had any other problems with the DVD drive? Incidentally, sometimes, even proper software can be faulty, (normally the system "verifies" the disk image prior to opening).
Reference target disk mode, I'd read the following article first (unless you already know this, of course ):

  • Leopard re-install problem. Please help.

Trying to erase and reinstall Leopard on an iMac refurb I'm sending back to Apple. This was recommended as the best way to get rid of all personal data. Using the Leopard install disc provided with the refurbed iMac but install fails due to trouble reading part of the disc. When I try to quit, the iMac HD doesn't show up as a start up option, only the Leopard install disc and "Network start up" or something similar. Can't eject the Leopard disc and if I restart the iMac it just boots from the install disc. How do I get back to the iMac and eject the install disc?
    Thanks, Jim

Thanks for the prompt reply. Unfortunately holding down the mouse during start up doesn't work--tried it twice. Install did fail during installation as I skipped the disc verification step--didn't realize it could have such dire consequences. I suppose I may have to send it back to Apple with the Leopard install disc in the iMac. Don't know the status of all of our info on the computer. I do have a back up from Time Machine on an external HD. Is there anything to be gained by hooking it up and see if it will boot from that? (Actually don't even know if this makes sense or not.)
    Thanks, Jim

  • Any problems to PS CS4 if I do an archive/install of Leopard?

    Hi!
I have PS CS4 installed on my Mac running Leopard. The CS4 version is itself an upgrade from CS3. I need to do an archive & install of Leopard as I am having some problems with my system. Will this affect my PS installation? Will I have to reinstall? If so, will I need to start with CS3 and then install the CS4 upgrade? What about the licence?
    Thanks.
    Stephen

It will have no impact whatsoever on CS4 or any other application.
All Adobe Upgrades are full installers.  No need to install a previous version that you won't use.  When the Upgrade installer does not find a serial number, it will simply ask you for the old serial number as well as the new one.

  • Can't "archive and install" or reinstall Snow Leopard and other problems

My laptop has been doing some funny things lately. I began noticing it mostly with video content. Especially when playing a DVD. The audio comes across as choppy. The video gets choppy. Now I have noticed that the mouse (track pad) seems jumpy. The arrow jumps across the screen when not intended to etc.
So, I thought I would do what was once called an Archive and install. I realize that Snow Leopard doesn't give that option, but it essentially does that if you choose to reinstall the OS.
This laptop is Model MacBook 2,1. It shipped with Leopard. I bout the SL upgrade and am trying to use that disc to reinstall the OS.
I get this message with a yellow triangle and exclamation point after I insert the disc and click the "install" button:
Mac OS X 10.6 cannot be installed on this computer. This disc requires that Mac OSX 10.5 or later already be installed on your computer."
I am confused because I am running 10.6.2
    Any help??
    Thanks.

You get the message if you use the special, reduced price Leopard to Snow Leopard upgrade disc. The retail Snow Leopard disc doesn't require any OS to be preinstalled; the upgrade one requires that Leopard be installed for licensing reasons.

I just installed the new mountain lion software on my iMac.  I was currently running Snow Leopard.  My problem is with my mouse.  Now when I scroll down the page it moves in the opposite direction. In system preferences I tried checking and unchecking Natural for scroll feature. Movement from side to side works fine.  Has anyone experienced this problem?

I think this new scrolling behaviour was introduced with Lion. You do get used to it pretty quickly (well I did). Are you sure that deselecting Natural Scrolling in Mouse Prefs doesn't re-instate the previous behaviour, it does here.

  • Archive and Install problem (not enough disc space for another install)

Alright, so I've got the blue screen. I tried getting rid of the APE stuff, and they were all successfully deleted, but it's still the blue screen. So I'm going to do the Archive/Install thing. My problem is that if I try to do an Archive and Install, I won't have enough space to do it. I have around 3.5 GB right now, but that's probably not enough to do another install.
My only option I think is to go into single-user mode and manually remove my larger files. I have a back-up drive, and I tried removing all the stuff that's on the back-up drive from my computer, but all of them are listed as read-only.
So is there a way to override permissions in the UNIX thing? Or is there another option for me with?
Also I don't know if this matters, but I'm installing it from an external DVD drive and I'm doing it from PANTHER and not Tiger.

...anyone? I left the blue screen on overnight but it didn't do anything.

  • Leopard (Option, Archive - Install)

What will happen if was to do the following in Leopard?
    Leopard (Option, Archive - Install)
Will this erase my disc/HDrive or what?

Archive and install is THE way to go if you are upgrading a 10.4 mac to 10.5. It takes care of all of the system files, permissions etc. while maintaining all of your personal files. Think of this way: you are buying new carpet. The carpet people come and put down your new carpet (10.5) by moving all of your furniture (personal files) and stacking it in the corner of another room (HD). When the carpet is laid down (and the old carpet has been rolled up in your garage), the movers place all of your furniture back just like it was.
Make sense? I do recommend making a backup to an external HD before you archive and install (stuff does happen), and, when the install is complete and you make sure all of your files and applications (which will be intact) are in working order, you need to deleted the "Old System File" folder in your finder. (a.k.a. your old carpet roll). Thankfully, deleting your old system file (which is under Computer-->Macintosh HD) won't give you a hernia like lifting a carpet roll by yourself. And there is much less carpet fuzz with 10.5.
Archive and install, therefore, saves everything you have ever personally put on your computer (anything from a picture to your iLife suite). All it replaces are system files, and the "permission files" which are go-betweens for your system and your applications. Archive and install will even save your desktop background and icons in your dock! Tell me that's not cool!!!

  • Leopard Install problem on iBook G4: Can't mount iBook as FW device anymore

I'll try to very briefly describe my situation and problem, and I appreciate your thoughts ahead of time.
I have a later model iBook G4 (1.2 Ghz, 1.2 GB RAM) that was successfully installed with Leopard about a year ago. It worked great but lately the computer significantly slowed down where basic processes were intolerantly slow. Not having any essential information on it (as I have an iMac Intel as our main home computer), I decided to do an Erase and Install of Leopard onto the iBook, thinking I could just start from scratch. The install was fine and the iBook was very fast again. Ignorantly, I thought if I zapped the PRAM (option-apple, P-R), the computer would run even more efficiently, and that's when I started having start-up problems. It then froze on the gray Apple logo page with the spinning dial. I was too greedy; I should have been content with how it was running to do a random thing like that.
I tried to boot up from my Leopard install disk; I did the restart-option thing and got to the page to choose the HD or the Install Disk, but the install disk never booted.
I read about using the iBook as a firewire device connected to my iMac via the restart-T function. I was able to mount it successfully and reached the point on the installer disk where it came up among other options of drives to install the OS. However, the install disk said it could not install Leopard on the iBook/FW because it needed to be repartitioned as a GUID Partition Drive via Disk Utility. I had no idea what this meant and after exploring options, I decided to erase the iBook HD and see if that enabled me to load Leopard; it didn't help. And then I stumbled across how to make the drive a GUID Partition, and then ala, I was able to start loading Leopard. Unfortunately, about 10 minutes into the load, my iMac went to sleep; I woke it up and realized that the Leopard install had froze. I had to do a hard reset of the iMac, and tried to get back to where I left off, but now I'm unable to get my iBook read as a FW device on the iMac; in other words, the restart-T on the iBook no longer works. When I start the iBook now, there is only a gray screen with no apple logo.
By erasing the iBook HD and incompletely installing Leopard, did I kill the ability to do the restart-T command? Or is it still in there some how? After multiple attempts, it's currently not working.
I have already resigned myself that I've killed it and plan to buy a new Apple laptop, but I thought I'd try y'all for one last try.

    Thanks for the suggestions, Lyssa.
I was able to reformat the drive back to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and Apple Partition map via the iMac.
And as you suggested, I put the iMac in Target Disk Mode with the Leopard disk installed. I even got the iBook to recognize the Install Disk; however, upon selecting it, it would freeze at the gray screen with the Apple logo.
I put it away for several hours and decided to try the original Panther install disks. I put the Panter Install Disk #1 into the iBook optical drive and did the restart-option think and selected the install disk. Lo' and behold, I actually got past the apple logo and spinning dial into the start-up screen for installation where I am asked to choose a language! This is the farthest I have got in 24 hours! I proceeded to select English and continue . . . but then the system froze.
After a few more attempts, I am getting less and less progress. It seems that giving the iBook a break from troubleshooting seemed to help; repeated successive attempts only seemed to freeze me at consecutively earlier steps.
I'll try again in the morning with the Panther disks.

    Hi,
I have a grey screen and grey rotating wheel startup probs. I have tried repairing with the disk utility, resetting PRAM, booting in safe mode (which gave a subset of the errors that 'disk repair' did- namely- 'invalid sibling link, invalid record count, invalid node structure, invalid key length)  and finally trying to get to archive&install the o/s, but it cannot find the destination volume. Is an erase the only option? PS I have backed up most files individually, but my daughter did not back up any from her user account. Any help would be appreciated. J

With all this build up you would think Apple would have a system that assures the product gets to the stores. Unfortunately, in this little corner of the world we are off the radar and the Event was cancelled a few hours before, due to no Leopard showing up. Bummer.

  • Archive & Install, Where did my printer settings go?

I just upgraded to Leopard from Jaguar on my PowerPC G4, by way of Archive & Installing. On top of my printer settings being reset to defaults, my RIP software (FastRip Pro) doesn't work with Leopard yet. Did I lose all of my previous RIP/printer settings? If not, where would they be in the previous systems folder?
I'm thinking about going back to Jaguar until the new RIP software is released..
If I do downgrade, will I lose my previous system folder?
    Any advice appreciated...
    Thanks

    Glad to help.
I suspect your settings are in the folder named "Previous System" but Leopard simply did not migrate it. That's why I think a clone would be perfect. Unfortunately you did not clone Panther, so your only hope os that the settings are in that folder I mentioned.
Download a copy of CarbonCopy Cloner - it's free:
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
Then get an external Firewire drive like a LaCie. I have their 500GB quadro. Then using DU on Leopard, partition it so that your MBP files will fit in the smaller partition when you clone it.
The other partition is perfect for TimeMachine - that's the way I use it.
Now, using CarbonCopy, you clone your Leopard onto the smaller partition on the external drive. Takes anywhere from 1/2 hour to an hour. The LaCie has FW800 on it which makes things fly.
After you have cloned your MBP, restart it holding down the Option button and the external clone should show up as a bootable system. Select it and boot into it just to be sure.
Once you have your Leopard preserved, then you can erase your internal drive using the disk utility on the Leopard DVD (boot into the DVD by holding down the "C" key when starting up.
Erase your internal drive including the free space and then shutdown. Startup with your original Panther CD and install it. You should be asked to migrate, but I don't know if Panther will see the Leopard archive. No problem yet.
After you get Panther running again, use Finder to look into the archived folder on the Leopard clone and see if you can find your old stuff.
Seriously, by the time you do all this, it might be that your new software will be available. But still, it's a great learning experience and as long as you have that clone, you have not lost anything except what was not installed when you installed Leopard.
