Leopard causing freezes???

So have had the Macbook since Feb 07, all worked fine, never any major probs but last week I put Leopard on it. Today, about 5 days after installation, I have found I have had to manually turn off the computer 5 times after everything had frozen, the only thing that moves is the mouse but no other programs move or close etc... anyone offer help???

A lot of people are having problems, including myself. How did you upgrade to Leopard? You might try an Archive and Install.

  • Leopard completely freezes - is this a known bug?

    Greetings,
since I've installed Leopard 10.5.4 on my MacBook Pro the day it came out, I have this weird behavior that sometimes Leopard completely freezes on me, i.e. doesn't accept mouse or keyboard input, nor does any application respond, no crashing or warning prompts.
This happens while I am either doing regular routines or on the Internet and my only chance was to hit the power button. In total 3 times over the past weeks. I can't say which application or setting might cause this. For example it happened when I switched from VMWare to Entourage. Another time after closing XCode or by working in MS Office for Mac.
I know that this decription isn't very specific, but I was wondering if that's a known bug and if anyone else experienced this?
Should I run any system tool after this type of reboot which I believe is everything but best practice?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    -Alex

Is the cache cleaning for you s standard practice after each OS X update? If not i recommend it. Try with Leopard Cache Cleaner or Onyx.

  • Windows recognizes iPod, but not iTunes or iPod updater, causes freezing

I'm having some issues with my 60GB iPod Photo. I tried to store my friend's music on my iPod as files. Upon uploading them to my own computer, some files caused freezing, requiring me to disconnect and reconnect the iPod. I finally gave up and deleted all the files stored on my iPod. All of a sudden, although Windows XP Pro recognized that an iPod was plugged in, it would no longer open iTunes automatically. When opening iTunes once the iPod was plugged in, it would cause iTunes to freeze.
I decided to restore my iPod. About halfway through, there was an error message saying my iPod could not be restored. All songs were deleted but my iPod was still not recognized. Now, the iPod updater does not recognize that in iPod is connected, even though Windows does. The updater freezes, inhibiting me from completing my restore. iTunes freezes as well when my iPod is plugged in. My iPod displays "update in progress - do not disconnect," but nothing happens. When my iPod is not connected to the computer, I can navigate through it normally, although it does need to be unfrozen when left unused for a couple of days. I cannot tell if it plays files because they were all removed during my unsuccessful restore.
I have tried reinstalling all my iPod related software and I have tried my iPod on more than one computer with different USB cables, but nothing works.
    Help, please!

This is exactly the same problem that I am having I have posted on 14th March on itunes forum. I wish you luck I wait with interest to see what someone says. My ipod was working like a dream until i downloaded the update

  • Supplied memory card causing freezing???

    Hi all,
Right i've had my E72 since oct 10 and during that time i've had a few accounts of freezing when ending applications etc but nothing major. Also i was having the access point menu randomly flashing up. I noticed these issues more (the access point menu entirley) after i updated the software. I was also noticing the keypad not lighting up everytime i used it, it would come on half way through a text.
I took the phone to my local express repair center where they simply hard reset the phone although im not sure if they did anything to the keypad/light sensor. Since getting the phone back its freezing worse than before and the keypad seems to be no better. Through looking on here i've found that memory cards can cause freezing and i've recently swapped my old samsung one for the one supplied with the phone. I also didn't realise about the light sensor (dumb*** ) but the keypad has been unlit in the dark before!
Are the supplied memory cards just bad or is it the handset and has anyone else had issues with there keypad light?
    Many Thanks

I have an E73 and no issues with the light sensor...I think.  Concerning the supplied memory card, have you tried reformatting it?  I recently had a problem with one of my purchased 8 GB cards slowing down.  I use the cards for file storage only: pictures, music, podcasts, etc.  Saving or deleting files on the card took a very long time, and the application appeared to lock up for roughly 20 (?) seconds with no progress bar.  Examining the card with a program like Windows' chkdsk revealed several errors on that chkdsk ultimately couldn't fix.  So I backed up all the data, reformatted the card, copied the data back, and it's been working perfectly since.  Just like hard drives and other storage, memory cards can fail, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're beyond saving.
On the other hand, I'm sure you've seen threads here about faulty phones.  If the phone itself can fail, then the memory card can, too.  You never know.   Hope that helps.

  • Safari 6 causing freeze to OSX

Since i upgraded to Mountain Lion and Safari got upgraded too to 6, I started getting this issue especially when i play flash games on facebook or watching a video on youtube, i guess it's related to flash player i don't know. It starts ok and starts the flash content normally but 5 minutes later it freezes and causes freeze to the whole system i can't do anything unless i hit option+command+esc to force quite safari, once i shut it down the system starts working normally like charm! .. I have 2011 15" macbook pro.
I made some reserch on the internet about this issue and all i found is just "reset safari" and deleting some extensions or stuff and that never worked for me!
I check for any updates for flash player or safari almost everyday hoping to get rid of this problem.
btw, I'm using Firefox and it works normally with flash contents and youtube.

Uninstall the currently installed Flash plugin (required for both YouTube and Facebook) then reinstall new.
Uninstall >  Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
Very important to uninstall the old plugin first.
    Then reinstall new >  http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/?promoid=JZEFT
Then open System Preferences > Flash Player then select the Advanced tab.
    Click: Delete All
    Quit and relaunch Safari.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Reset Safari
Select:  Clear History  (also empties the cache)
Deselect the remaining boxes then click Reset.
    Try a video.

  • Can the battery cause freeze ups/ beach balls?

    Hello all,
Recently bought a newertech batt replacement that I saw referenced on here and at first all was good. After a day or so though the computer would lock up with browser open and not come back from sleep. The cursor would disappear.
I am wondering if the battery could cause this since it occurred occasionally after it went to sleep (Screensaver)? Perhaps I didn't calibrate the battery correctly?
I did a hardware test with the disk that comes with ibook and all parts passed including new hard drive, although disk permissions won't repair - gets stuck.
    thanks,
    Al

There may be some other hardware issues at play in
your computer; a new battery if properly calibrated
and the other aspects of the general system are good,
    the machine should work.
Have you tried starting the computer in SafeBoot,
then try Disk Utility's 'repair disk permissions'
and then restart normally? Also, if you can't get
'disk permissions' to work, boot from the installer
disc and use that Disk Utility; also 'repair disk.'
Have you used a widget to see if the battery specs
are in the good range, and if it is getting charged
when other indications say that it is? iStat is a good
one. Also Sys Profiler can tell you a thing or two.
A proper reset of the PMU may help, if the issue
is related to charging, power, battery life, etc.
A too full hard disk drive with inadequate free space
for the system to function, and inadequate space for
virtual memory, could cause freeze-ups hangs and
other issues. This would be more likely & critical.
Look into Activity Monitor and see how all things
    stack up. Free space vs full space; RAM vs demand;
virtual memory, CPU use, network activity, etc.
You replaced the hard disk drive? Damaged a cable?
Could be if there are read-write errors, the ATA
controller chip on the logicboard may be suspect.
    Preventative maintenance and general housekeeping
are like troubleshooting in advance; since you know
the last time several recommended things were done.
How many places did you ask the same questions, btw?
    Good luck & happy computing!
    edited.

  • Is this creative suite or leopard causing my mac pro to freeze, quit and not sleep?

I hav recently bought a high end mac pro and leopard and I am lucky if I get 30 minutes before the whole system freezes. Tried re-installing in a different hard drive on the pro - same problem. If I put the computer to sleep, 80% of the time when I return, it has shut down. Actions in CS3 are deleted. Everything is a bit random and I can not work it out. Running disk utility, from the computer and disk produces this:
ACL found but not expected on Applications/Utlities
    """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" on Applications
    """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" on Library

All software is up to date. I do have some plug-ins that are supposed to be cool with this system.

  • Leopard partially freezes up.

I'll return to my brand new 24" iMac to find network activity is dead, the Dock is completely unresponsive (mouseover does nothing, likewise any other attempted interaction), command-tab is dead, the Apple menu can be accessed, but nothing results from it, I cannot bring up force quit either from the KB shortcut or the Apple menu, some programs will have the spinning beachball of death, others that can be accessed (by clicking on their window, if I'm lucky and it's not covered by a hung program's windows) but upon closing a window or quitting the app it too hangs.
This has happened six times now over a two week period.
To summarise: the Mac's networking is unresponsive (other Macs on the same LAN are fine, it isn't anything other than this one Mac), the Dock is totally frozen, Force Quit cannot be accessed, and apps hang when I do anything more serious than look at them.
I can no longer trust this new Mac to stay up and running while I am gone. This is but one of many annoying issues I am having with it. I've been through three wipes of the HD and clean reinstalls of Leopard to try and fix earlier problems (which still continue to occur). This is also my second iMac. The first was declared DOA in under eight hours. So I'm not having a lot of luck here.
Also - these forums appear to be suffering serious issues. It took several tries to try and post this message. I am getting the errors:
"500 Unable to insert thread into the database: No operations allowed after connection closed.
Resin Professional 3.0.23 (built Mon, 22 Jan 2007 02:25:17 PST)"
"Not allowed to post messages more than once every 30 seconds." (but I haven't)
Plus upon login I was asked to create a user account???
Oh, and the drafts saved are incomplete. Nothing is working right with these forums.

What are you calling a clean install? This article explains the different installation options available:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607614
If you mean erase and install, it does sound like you have a hardware issue if you are getting partial freezes with no non-Apple devices connected to the computer and no non-Apple software installed. If any of these conditions is untrue, you have to eliminate all other potential causes this way after backing up your data at least twice to verify you definitely have a hardware issue with the computer. Bad RAM can cause such issues as my FAQ* here explains:
    http://www.macmaps.com/badram.html
And can often start without warning because no RAM can be tested for errors accurately. If it reports errors in a test, you can believe it. If it doesn't report errors in a test, you can't believe it.

  • Leopard Sleep Freeze

If your computer freezes after going into sleep mode... I found if you delete all the WIDGETS this will take care of the problem... Most widgets are for 10.4 and not working on Leopard.
Hope this helps the many of you having problems.

I just wanted to clarify your advice. Do you mean to remove your widgets from the Dashboard, thereby making them inactive? Or do you mean delete your widgets from your computer completely?
While I'm at it, when my computer freezes coming back from sleep, it will often freeze up after the reset leading to a kernel panic that describes a problem with the ATA device. I recently upgraded my start-up drive, and I'm wondering if this problem is 1)purely Leopard-related 2)purely new HD-related or 3)a combination of both. I did (yesterday) reset my PRAM . . . which I should have probably done as soon as I removed and replaced my start-up drive.
Thanks (in advance) for the clarification and any advice!
I just removed the widgets to make them inactive... I had read in another discussion group, that some widgets, like weather widget can cause the system to not wake up after going to sleep... This is what was happening to me after I installed Leopard... I've had issues with an older USB card reader that was not mac friendly... I replaced it with a mac card reader... Also Parallels was a pain in the butt, so I'm now using Leopard Boot Camp with VIsta... That was working great until I downloaded CA Security for windows... Then all **** broke loose so I deleted CA Security and all is running fine. So far as a six month new user of imac and apple products, I find most of my problems are related to third party issues... Except for Apple Aperture which is an awful, outdated and over expensive piece of software.

  • My iMac 10.6.8 w/ snow leopard keeps FREEZING/CRASHING??

ok lets see if i can type this without my computer freezing.
SO. to begin, i have a iMac 10.6.8 which also has snow leopard. I have recently downloaded many things, that ended up not working so i deleted them. I dont know if thats whats been slowing it down (the downloads still being installed but deleted from trash?) but lately my computer has been very glitchy. I dont have apple care or whatever, so i cant call.
This morning there was a "software update" so i decided, whatever, i'll do it. When i did, i rebooted and now my computer is freezing like a mother.
It is VERY ANNOYING and i dont know how to fix it. It just freezes randomly to. I go on safari for a minute, freeze, then hold power button to reboot.
or i click on another thing, freeze, hold power to reboot.
pretty much everything sets it off. I need to know WHY!? i have had it for a long time and its never been this bad. Another thing that sets it off is runescape. i play it from time to time when im bored, and now it freezes every time. but runescape isnt the only thing that freezes it, it freezes on everything else to. its so frustrating!!!!!!!!
i dont know what to do!?
    i have tried these:
    -online downloads for mac cleanup
    -restart and hold apple+S
    -restart and hold apple+option+P+R
    -software update
i dont know what else to do. is there something i can download to clean up un-used apps. or unistall items?
i just want to play my games and have my iMac run smoothley. if anyone can help thatd be awsome.
    skype me: castrojake
i just want someone who has had this happen, and fixed to help me out.
its an iMac 20 inch Mid 2007
    10.6.8 with snow leopard

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • Specific E-mail with links causing freeze using Mail

My wife is getting newsletter style e-mail from Better Homes and Gardens that contain links to pictures and other websites.  These pictures only appear  if internet access is connected so I believe that they are links that only are active once the mail is selected.  If the internet is off, the space for the photos is blank.
I have isolated the problem to these specific e-mail messages that once selected, start some process of internet activity that causes the entire system to freeze and I get the beachball.  If I don't click on the message, everything is fine.  If I then turn off the internet access and open that message I can read it but there are no pictures or links. And the system continues to work fine.  If I leave the internet on and click on the message, it opens with the links and I can see pictures etc., BUT as I continue to read the message the computer will freeze up within 20 seconds.  If I try to click on any links within the message the computer freezes almost instantly.   Also, if I quickly get out of the message and try to view a different message from any other sender that also contains links, all the links and photos become unavailable.  And within a couple seconds the computer is locked up.
From watching my internet access speed monitor and listening to the hard drive it appears that the message is initiating some internet access or hard drive activity that interupts other mail functions and locks up the machine.
Anyone know how to troubleshoot this further?  Does it help to look at the message in it's raw coded form?  What would I look for?
    Thanks,
    Curtis

You know, I expected an answer like; "Your parental control can't be used like that. Its just a program, so it will try to block adult sites, or block unsecure connections. Like AOL mail for example. If you want her to access the school mail, then you'll just have to allow unrestricted access to the web. You can still monitor her web browsing. As for gmail, some email sites are able to be accessed even with the parental controls turned on."
I even expected some arrogant replies like Carolyn's. Telling me how to access gmail.
    Thanks for nothing!

  • Snow Leopard Crash / Freezing Issue - Keyboard Dead - Hard Reboot Required

    Good morning,
Been using Snow Leopard on a 24" 2.4Ghz iMac pretty much since the day of launch. Initially was very pleased, no real problems, seemed to run even smoother than regular Leopard, however, recently, my system has developed a bunch of issues, particularly when running word and/or transmission (possibly other apps, but I have noticed with these two so far).
The main problem is, very randomly, the system will lock-up. This can be after 1 hour or 24 hours, there is no real correlation. After the lock up, you are able to use open apps, ie Transmission, Word, Safari, Finder, etc, but they do not function correctly...for example
Word - You can click into documents, but any keyboard strokes are completely ignored.
Safari - You can browse links on default start page, etc, but you cannot create new tabs or type anything into the address bar.
Finder - You can browse folders; but you cannot perform any functions such as dragging to trash, etc.
Also worth noting, it the main menu bar at the top of the screen continues to say either "Word" or "Transmission" etc, regardless of what application you are in. Clicking on any applications icons in the dock has no response unless they were already running.
The system is unable to shut down or log off, and you cannot quit apps. The only option is to do a hard reset via holding down the power off button.
Note: My system is set to never sleep. There is no screensaver.
Any advice would be gratefully received. I'm a fairly new mac user so i'm not aware how to view log files etc., which may identify the problem.
    Many thanks in advance.

Just want to reiterate. I am seeing freeze issues with my iMac 2.8 GHZ 4GB ram and wireless keyboard and magic mouse. Had this for two years without problem. When a freeze occurs mouse is reponsive but clicks don't give result. I am unable to open window to force quit apps. It may be related to iTunes but I can't confirm. Happening again now, even as I type this I can't open other appslike console log. I add more later.

  • Leopard causes Terminal to load on startup - Please help!

    Hello all,
I just registered with the forum here hoping someone could help me figure out what is going on with my MacBook Pro after I installed Leopard. After the machine has started up the Terminal app will open a window with the following text in it:
Last login: Sat Oct 27 21:02:27 on console
    MacBook-Pro:~ Drew$ /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/SyncServicesUI.framework/Versions/A/SyncServi cesUI ; exit;
-bash: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/SyncServicesUI.framework/Versions/A/SyncServi cesUI: cannot execute binary file
    logout
    [Process completed]
Also, there is a TextEdit window open with the header "HP Communications" but nothing is in it.
Neither of these things happened prior to the install while running 10.4 Does anyone have any suggestions that could help. I can close them after startup but it is an issue I want to correct.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I'm also using a MacBook Pro, and when I startup Leopard, the Terminal application loads with the following window:
Last login: Tue Oct 30 08:19:58 on console
    /Library/StartupItems/HP\ Trap\ Monitor/HP\ Trap\ Monitor ; exit;
    You have new mail.
    (my user name is here)ls-computer:~ (my name is here)$ /Library/StartupItems/HP\ Trap\ Monitor/HP\ Trap\ Monitor ; exit;
/Library/StartupItems/HP Trap Monitor/HP Trap Monitor: line 47: $1: unbound variable
    logout
    [Process completed]
I have no idea what is causing this, and I would like help also. I'll keep looking. Good luck.

  • 500 GB Hitatchi Travelstar causes freezing

And I am not talking about temperature.
After installing the 500 Giger from Hitatchi in my 2008 MacBook Aluminum, the computer freezes every few minutes. The spinning beachball starts and it lasts for about 20 seconds.
Do you think this is caused by the Sudden Motion Sensor? Does the Hitatchi suffer from the same issues as the Seagate disks? Would it help to switch of the Sudden Motion Sensor?

I installed the same drive in my wifes 08 Unibody Macbook, and she has never experienced any problems with it. Is this a 7200 or 5400 RPM version? Just curious...
