Leopard DU not repairing permissions

Hi there
I have a 1.8Ghz G5 (2.5Gb RAM) PowerMac here, running Leopard 10.5.8, which is used as a file server. The drives aren't RAIDed or anything. I am going to add a 2nd internal drive to it, and as a maintenance I decided to repair pemrissions before shutting it down.
However, when I ran Disk Utility, I found that I cound't repair permissions at all. I could select the drive, click the botton, and the progression bar would go to the 'striped barber pole' effect that comes up as it is preparing to do something, but then it just stays there. I can cancel it, but no repairs happen.
Any ideas how to get this to work or should I just use a 3rd party solution like Leopard Cache Cleaner? I'm not sure whether other software would just come up against the same issue.

DisK Utility Not Repairing Permissions

Hello, I have a problem with my iMac.
The problem is as following: I cannot repair permission using Disk Utility.
What happened first was that I wanted to install a program from a mounted drive, however a Pop up occurred and said the framework of installer was incorrect.
After that, I went to Disk Utility and clicked repair permissions when a Pop up like this came up:

-are you running Disk Utility from the HD or booted to the instal disk?
-what are the affected files?
If the file(s) was not installed by the mac OS X installer, Repair Permissions will not fix the issue
Tip:
If the files are located in your home folder,
boot to instal disk#1,
choose Reset Password Utility from the menu bar
and "Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs".

HT1338 Not repairing permissions

After installing new software I always Repair Permissions.
But recently I have noticed a whole bunch of permissions that will not clear.
It says they are repaired but they appear again if I repair permissions a second time, a third time... every time.
Is this a problem?
Any ideas, please?

No. Repairing permissions after installing software is a waste of time, as is running it more than once per problem you're trying to troubleshoot.

I'm planning to update to SL and have been reading discussions about a recommendation to repair permissions before and after the update. Does this sound correct? and if so how do I do this?

open Disk Utility, select your main hard drive and click "repair permissions". But MUCH more important is to make a full backup before upgrading. repairing permissions is extremely minor compared to having a backup.

Disk Utility Not Repair Permissions on OS 10.4- Are there other options?

How can I repair repair HD permissions when disk utility does not work? I have a powerpc g4 that I installed a second internal HD and then system would not boot up. Evidently the second drive was damaged and as a result something affected my boot on my main drive. I removed the 2nd hard drive, reset pram, nvram, and would not boot. Tried the usual reset commands and no boot up. (gets to the gray block screen instructing to restart and stops). Restarted trying to get to safe mode by holding down "shift" key but only gets to blue screen and goes no further with spinning circle looking for something. Used my os x install disk and tried disk utility and s.m.a.r.t indicated was ok and ran repair disk and passed with no problems with the file structure. Then ran disk permissions and disk utility would not run or would not complete. I left the computer on overnight to see if it would repair the permissions. Then I went ahead and reinstalled os x 4 again on the HD drive using the save last boot option and restarted and the computer booted up. The desktop came up looking like the old one but most items would not work properly and very slow or would close automaticly. Looked in system information and found spaces between items. I closed the computer down by restart again to see if it would correct the problem but went back to gray screen instructing a reboot. Reboots brought me back to the same gray screen. Is this drive now not usable, can be zeroed out and resued, or just replaced? Where do I go from here....thanks

What makes you think this? It's not very often that a new hard drive is defective out of the box. More likely is that it was connected improperly. Don't jump to conclusions without evidence.

If Disk Utility says the drive is good, then we have to assume that's true. It appears that you've somehow corrupted your entire OS X installation, so whether or not you have a backup from before this happened, your best option now is to completely erase that hard drive and reinstall OS X from scratch, along with all the Software Updates to bring it to 10.4.11, as well as your third-party applications.
Then, if that doesn't work, that may be an indication of a drive problem, or even a system hardware problem.
To prevent this kind of thing from happening again, you need to invest in at least one external backup drive to use for a bootable backup of your entire hard disk, and keep it updated every day before you shut down your Mac. You can use SuperDuper ($27.95) or Carbon Copy Cloner (donationware) for those.

Can not repair permissions

After applying all the recent updates (iTunes, Quicktime, Safari, iPod) when repairung permissions I get a message saying that " lost connection with disk management tool....can not continue....quit and relaunch." When quitting I get the message " some ops in progress.....quitting can leave a disk non operational" To say the least I did force quit and have yet a problem. When using Cocktail, it just freezes up during repair of permissions. Any ideas how to resolve?

Chess (from Applications) and the prefs file for chess (HD>Library>Preferences). This allowed us to complete a Disk Utility run through successfully.
Then you state that you deleted.....
all iTunes files from HD>Library>Receipts EXCEPT iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg, and still had problems!!!!!
Each statement contradicts each other...the problem is solved and then you state the problem still exist.

Repair Permissions Warnings

I keep getting the following warning messages in Leopard when I repair permissions. Even if I repair again, I get the same messages. I did a complete erase and install of Leopard. Then I don't get the warnings. But when I upgrade to 10.5.1 I get the warnings again. Something in the upgrade is doing this. System works fine, just wish I could eliminate this.
Anyone know what is going on here, or have had similar behavior?

Permissions repair complete

I'm getting a very similar set of "warnings" when I repair permissions. This is after a new install of Leopard followed by using migration assistant to copy my documents from an external drive. I tried re-running the 10.5.1 upgrade using the stand alone installer instead of software update but this did not fix the problem. The name of my boot volume is a single word.
I had problems with Office apps related to lack of permission for some accessory files but fixed the problems after deleting all the preference files associated with Office. I also had to copy my address book files over from the backup for similar reasons. Quite a mess really.

Why can't I delete repaired permissions?

I recently upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard. I repaired permissions before and after. For the most part, the upgrade was successful without any major problems. The issue I have is when I repair permissions I can't delete the "history" of fixed permissions ... they clear with the clear history button but as soon as I repair again they all come back and it takes about three times longer to repair permissions than it did on Tiger. Any thoughts ?

First, despite what you'll often read on this site, repairing permissions is a complete waste of time unless you have a permission error involving a system file, which you probably never will. It's not a routine maintenance task, and certainly not something you need to do before or after a system upgrade.
Second, if you do repair permissions, it will always spew false errors, which makes it almost impossible to tell whether there were any real ones.

Permission repair will not repair

Folks....
A few weeks ago, I noticed that running permission repair from the HD I have booted from will not repair permissions. I have pages and pages of un repaired permissions. I booted to my Leopard DVD and ran permission repair from it and have the same issue.
I ran disk repair from the Leopard DVD and it said my HD was fine.
Suggestions? Maybe a 3rd party software package? Any shareware/freeware I might try first. I would hate to spend the money on Tech Tools Pro if it would not fix it. I started getting squirrely things happening, and freeze ups. But other then bad permissions, I can not find any thing wrong.

OK, Here is what I see when I try to do permission repairs. I am happy to hear you say some are not so bad. In the past, the OS fixed all of them. I was taught to run permission repair after each now software install. Maybe that is not correct?

Disk repair not repairing

Having an issue with disk repair not repairing permissions. I've run it four times and each time the same set of incorrect permissions show up. Is there a plist I can trash to try to get this to work?

The logic for the last ten years of owning Macs said that running permissions repair twice would insure everything was cleaned up and corrected. Maybe that only applies to PPC Macs. In any case I downloaded Onyx and spruced things up with it, thx for that suggest. Oh, and most of the repeat permissions probs ARE Java-related. We'll call this answered, but none of my other Macs ever took more than about three minutes to run a permissions repair. This thing takes eight.

Cant repair permissions on hard drive

I have a 1 TB hard drive that I installed and for some reason I can not repair permissions on it. It does not let me choose it in disk utility.
anyone know how I can rapair the permissions?

I am running 10.5.7
Only the OS (if any) installed on the 1TB drive matters. Whatever systems you might have installed on other drives or partitions doesn't.

Repairing Permissions Issue in 10.6.5

Hello to all. I just started using my new iMac running 10.6.5 and whenever I repair permissions, I get this long list every time. In other words, Disk Utility reports that they are repaired but the same ones reappear again the next time. A report follows and I would appreciate any comments. Thanks.

The repair permissions database (or whatever it is) doesn't get updated regularly with the updates themselves. So, when the updates change things, the repair permissions database doesn't know about them, and flags them. They are not wrong, nor are they problems. The best way to not see those things is to not repair permissions unless you have a need to.
When do you have a need to? When something indicates it can't continue because it can't access a file that it should or doesn't have permission to do so. And, that is only true if it is trying to access something in the system space. If it is in your home folder, repairing permissions won't fix it.
Unless you actually have a permission problem, you don't need to repair permissions.

Permissions do not repair after snow leopard upgrade

Taking advice from this forum, upgraded my 2006 imac with snow leopard. Loving it. One concern is that every time I run repair permissions it makes a whole slew of repairs, takes 13 minutes. However if I run it again it makes all the same repairs again. Have done this numerous times with no change. Any advice? Here is the most serious looking one the last one:
