Leopard - File sharing too much?

I've got Leopard setup with file sharing over SMB. Right now, the only folder I have shared under 'File Sharing' in the system prefs is my Home directory, and that's only shared to a single account.
Yet, from my windows machine, I see every signal drive being shared including "Macintosh HD" and my various external drives. I checked and I have read/write access on all of them.
Why are all these extra volumes being shared? And any idea how to stop that?
Thanks

Same issue...just happened a few days ago and racking my brain on why. Found this post:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1247712&tstart=0
Think the key is this: com.apple:show admin all volumes = yes (I have not played with this yet but did create a standard account to test the non-admin user)
I created another user account with standard permissions (don't check the admin box when you create it). Set that up with File Sharing. When I did this, only the user's home folder was shown. but, on my regular account (with an admin status), I get the root level of the hard drive.
This WAS working correctly with my admin account and only showing my home and folders within that. I either changed something or the daemons got restarted...maybe I was a standard user initially and changed that to admin (don't think so). Per the other thread, it shows why a reboot could cause this (/var/run/smb.conf regen when the daemons restart). Btw, this is a virgin 10.5 install on a new mac.
I am trying to figure out why it was working correctly but is not now. The way I read it though, admin users are suppose to get all volume access by default. If it is a feature/bug, you change the smb.conf file per the above or create a standard account for sharing files. Still digging...

  • Snow Leopard File Sharing Makes Mac Unstable

Since going to Snow Leopard on my 24"iMac (clean install, currently 10.6.2), I have been unable to see any of the PCs on my network and have had multiple, daily application freezes, slow application startups, pinwheels and other assorted problems.
After many hours of on-line research, troubleshooting and calling Apple support to no avail, I finally found that the problem is related to file sharing in a blog at iLounge.
    http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/backstage/comments/two-proposed-solutions-to-sn ow-leopard-crash-problems-on-macs/
Following Solution 2 in the blog which involves turning file sharing off and removing shared folders, my Mac is running better than it ever has since I got it. Applications pop open, no app freezes, no more pinwheels - but no more sharing. Posters to the blog report that the problems recur as soon as they try add shared folders back on their Macs.
This is very disappointing performance from Apple, particularly since file sharing worked quite well with OS 10.5 and I was able to see all the PCs on my network and share files anywhere on the network.
Hopefully, Apple is working on a fix. People who do not use file sharing should not see these problems.
Questions: Are there any work-arounds that will let me re-enable file sharing on my Mac so that I can share files with my network of PCs (Win 7, Vista and XP) without having to go back to OS 10.5 or the almost hourly problems with 10.6? Can we expect a fix from Apple in the near future?

Work arounds should not be needed. If what's below doesn't work with a little customization to your situation, then you have a non-Snow problem.
    A. On a Win7 machine,
    1. Ignore everything to do with Homegroup, except as mentioned below.
    2. Go > Computer > Users > User; right click on User and chose Share with > Specific people; and Set to share with a specific individual or Everyone with Read/Write permission.
    3. Go Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change advanced sharing settings, and Turn on network discovery; Turn on file and printer sharing; Turn off public folder sharing (unless you want it on); Turn off password protected sharing (unless sharing won’t work without turning it on); Select 128-bit encryption; and elect to Allow Windows to manage homegroup ….
    4. Restart (probably not necessary, but I’d do it).
    B. On a Vista machine,
    1. Select a folder to share, right click on the folder, choose sharing, and, using the remaining menus/options, share the folder with everyone allowing read and write (later, after getting things working, you can change who is allowed to share the folder).
    2. Go Control Panel > Network and, turn on file and printer sharing, Turn off public folder sharing, and Turn off password protected sharing (unless sharing won’t occur without turning it on). Turn on allow network access if there is a box to do so (can't remember).
    3. Restart (probably not necessary, but I’d do it).
    C. On an XP machine.
    1. Try sharing your My Documents folder. To do so, right click on the folder, and, as I recall, chose sharing.
    2. Alternatively, I think you can look at the folders properties after right clicking and then select sharing.
3. However you get there you should see two sharing options. Check both of them. 4. Look at the folders permissions. Enable "everyone" to read and write the folder.
    5. Restart (probably not necessary, but I’d do it).
    D. On a Sno machine,
    1. Go System Preferences > Sharing > Check File sharing > Go Options > Enable SMB sharing.
    2. Go System Preferences > Network > Select Airport or Ethernet depending on what you are going to be using.
    3. If your network is wireless, having selected Airport, select ask to join new networks and show Airport status in menu bar. If it is an Ethernet network, then Go System Preferences > Network > Select Ethernet. Chose configure IpV4 using DHCP, and ignore the "remember networks this computer has joined instruction" below.
    4. Click advanced > click remember networks this computer has joined > Click Wins > Enter the ip address of the Vista machine in the WINS server box > Enter the Vista's workgroup name in the workbook box unless it already is there (look in the drop down menu too). In all likelihood the name is workgroup, but check on the Vista machine.
    5. Restart (probably not necessary, but I’d do it).

  • File sharing too slow

    Hi,
I have 2 macs connected via hub. My internet connection is very fast and everything is ok but file sharing is too slow. 1GB takes 8 hours to be transfered.
    Any fix?

  • Leopard File Sharing Slow when Connecting to a Tiger iMac from a MacBook

I have a MacBook (2.0 GhZ Alu) with Leopard and an iMac (2.0GhZ Alu) with Tiger (both most recent versions). The iMac is connected to a Belkin N1 wireless modem-router and the MacBook uses Airport to connect to the router. On the iMac I use Finder and select Network and am instantly able to log-in and have access to the files on the MacBook within seconds, but while the MacBook instantly identifies the iMac connecting to it takes a number of minutes - much slower than when using the iMac - I have to wait while it finds the files and then wait again to log-in using my user name and if I close the Finder window it needs to happen all over again. Any ideas?

I've now updated both systems to Snow Leopard - Tiger and Leopard don't like sharing.

  • Auditing all users file access - too much information

Hi, I have enabled a GPO With the following: Computer Configuration\Policies\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Advanced Audit Policy Configuration\Audit Policies\Object Access -> Audit File System -
    Success on a file server.
After that, I have enabled successful Create files/Create Folders on a folder for the built-in group Everyone.
That part works fine, I can see when users are creating files on the folders. But I also get a lot of Extreme amounts of other events logged in the Security log, and everything is coming from the backup agent running on the server (NetBackup in this case).
How come that a backup agent is creating the events like this? It makes filtering much harder afterwards. The business requirements is to audit Everyone who is adding files to a specific folder, not all the rest of the server. The server
    is Win2008 R2.
    Example:
An attempt was made to access an object.
    Subject:
    Security ID: SYSTEM
    Account Name: FILESERVER01$
    Account Domain: MYDOMAIN
    Logon ID: 0x3e7
    Object:
    Object Server: Security
    Object Type: File
    Object Name: \Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy58\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-audio-audiocore_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.18619_none_d4cab625fb3adf96\audiosrv.dll
    Handle ID: 0x3c4
    Process Information:
    Process ID: 0x1048
    Process Name: C:\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\bin\bpbkar32.exe
    Access Request Information:
    Accesses: WriteAttributes

    Hi Steve,
I feel your pain, I turned on logging on a file server and found the security log filling 4GB in a couple of hours. I think the key is being very selective about what you audit. I found this article useful and it had some powershell and ideas for helping
make sense of the information overload - http://blogs.technet.com/b/mspfe/archive/2013/08/27/auditing-file-access-on-file-servers.aspx
In my opinion though you really need a third party solution to make this viable, two I've looked at are
    Netwrix File Server Auditor and
FileAudit which seem very similar in functionality and ease of use. These basically read in the event log to provide long term archive and reporting on it.
    Good luck,
    Tim

  • File sharing too permissive!

A somewhat alarming problem: I shared my movies and music folders over the local network so my roomate can access my files setting the permissions to "Read Only". He can do whatever he wants: rename or delete them and it's definitely a permission problem on my Mac.
I've tested with "No Access", it works as said, he cannot access the folder, disabling SMB does the same, but "Read Only" lets him modify and delete my files and that's a big problem in my book.
It seems Mac doesn't know how to handle the rights correctly. He's using the latest Ubuntu 10.04 and sharing is done over Samba.
My files aren't on the same partition as the system, I have a Mac partition for the system stuff and a Data partition for my files and Disk Utility doesn't let me repair the permissions on my Data partition.

The Shared folder is the only folder a user can access via the Guest account. You've apparently given wider access than that hence your issue.
Is there a reason you're using SMB? Are these other users accessing from Windows machines that cannot access your machine otherwise?
Seems to me that given what you've stated you should simply move the files you want users to access into the /Users/Shared/ folder. Have them only access via the Guest account but not as registered users but simply as guest users. Then they cannot access any of the rest of the machine. A registered user logging in with your username and password essentially has the same access to the machine as you do. The guest user on the other hand only logs in as a guest user which gives them access only to the Shared folder. You need not specifically share anything on the machine as access to the Share folder is automatic.

  • RTP sample (AVRtpTransmit sample file) takes too much time to start tx

    Hi,
I am new to JMF and trying to use AVRTPTransmit sample code to transmit mp3 or wav file to destination RTP client. It takes time for processor to go in realize state and transmitter to start RTP. Instead of starting immediately it is taking more than 10 seconds.
I am trying to make a voip call and pass the RTP traffic to one party. But because of this delay the caller hears dead silence for a long time before hearing the wav file.
I would appreciate any help in this.
    Thanks

It sounds like perhaps you're not appending the "file://" prefix to the input file locator, and as such, JMF is having to iterate through all of the different plugins looking for your file...

  • ITunes Music files taking too much space???

In my innocence, I had imagined that the storage requirements of iTunes would match those of my iPod. The iTunes programme now tells me that I have 6,694 songs in my library, using 46.43 GB of space. However, my iTunes Music directory boasts 10,278 files and occupies 75.7 GB of space, which is a real problem for me. Whence the discrepancy? When I delete files from iTunes I send them to the Recycle bin. So, what are these extra 2,600 files which occupy 35 GB of space that I cannot afford.
    Help, please.

Thank you for the sensible suggestions, ed. However, it is specifically, and only, my iTunes Music folder that shows 75.7 GB; and that does not include music files stored elsewhere. Is it possible that when iTunes imports a file it stores it simultaneously both in AAC and in its original format? That would seem pointless and wasteful. As for deletion, the question is to the point and all I can say with certainty at this stage is that, when I delete a track, I click the button for deletion; so, it seems to me, these files OUGHT to be deleted. So, I remain bewildered. And irritated. And, unless someone comes up with an easier solution, shall gear myself up to go through those thousands of files individually...

  • SER files using too much space

Our production server had almost used 90 GB in the past one year. After digging further, I realized that the audit folder in the document storage is using up all the space.
Is there a way to purge the files and not lose any data ? Where are the pdfs used in the workflow like attachment, etc. stored in the file system or the Adobe database ?

    Hello,
    Thank you for your reply,
I have already cleaned the GD folders (using workbench) and as I said I have enough space on my hard drive, so why I am getting this error?
I am assuming that the only limitation to recording should be the space? Is it like this or is also affected by the available memory?
I am noticing that workbench is consuming memory and at some points (during and not during recording) it give messages about that shortage of memory, I have tried adjusting Xms, Xmx in workbench.ini to fix that.. Does this have any relation to the recording problem?
Now I am trying to move some parts of the process map into sub-processes so the number of steps decrease hopefully I will be able to record the run of these sub-process individually, this can help to some extent but I am sure this error will show again since my process contains couple of loops and recording stops after a few steps over 20 or 15 which kind of low compared to the number of steps I want to record.

  • File migration - too much data?

I'm trying to migrate my photos, music and documents from my old desktop (4GB memory) to my new Mac air, either direct or from the Time Machine backup....thing is i can't seem to do it because the system thinks there is hundreds of GB of data (i think all the backups added together?)....any ideas?

The 4GB memory is likely the RAM on your old desktop and has nothing to do with the amount of data stored on its hard drive -- unless you know for sure that is the data on the hard drive, but that would be a very small amount.
Sounds like the old desktop is also a Mac. If you open Finder on it and navigate to Users and then use the Command i key combination that will open a window that will show how much data in the Users folder. You can navigate to a specific user and to folders such as Documents, Pictures, etc and use Command i on each to get an idea of how much data and where it is.

  • All My Files, shows too much!

The "All my Files" function shows files that are inside locked folders. It even allows opening said files. This is not good! Thankfully they don't show up in spotlight, but that is little console.
Does anyone else have this problem, and is there a fix?
On another note, the forms we use to enter text on this site don't follow the usual "Mac" rules. You can't "3 finger" click a word to use the dictionary, right clicking doesn't give you the universal contextual menu functions... What gives?

  • IMessage sharing too much

Does anyone know how to stop iMessage from sharing all the numbers and email address among everyone on the same iTunes account? Even after deleting the email addresses out of iMessage settings, it continues to put them back. Text are shared with everyone on the account and basically gives them the option to view your incoming and outgoing text. No privacy.  Besides turning off iMessage (which can simply be turned back on from any device) is there a better way to control access?  Thanks

Each device needs its own iCloud ID. You can still use the same Apple ID for purchases in iTunes, but use a separate one for iCloud.

I'm not saying that your question "

  • Windows file sharing can no longer work after tiger upgrade

hi guys, ive been searching the web to find a cure on my problem for a long time now, but still no success, hope someone could help me out.
ok heres my problem, before the upgrade, file sharing with windows is perfect, with no problems at all, but when i upgraded one of our mac to tiger, windows file sharing is not working anymore, i cant connect or see my windows xp computer on the network and vice versa, windows cannot see my mac with tiger on the network.
Our other 2 macs here running in panther are fine( meaning, windows file sharing is working)
Now we've bought a new computer which is a mac pro with fresh install of leopard, i setup the windows file sharing, but i was surprised that i cant see my windows xp box too on the network, and vice versa, the pc cant see my mac pro too on the network, whats wrong with tiger and leopard file sharing???? please help me, im so frustrated cant make it to work. i know, my pc computer has nothing to do with it, coz i can still connect to a mac with panther os. hope someone can help me fix this... please..

This site has some information on file sharing and printer sharing between Windows and Macs for various combinations of OSs. The Leopard repository isn't quite as mature as the Tiger repository, but there's a lot of good information at this site. Hopefully, it will be helpful to you in resolving your Windows/Mac issues.
