Leopard freezes and gets kernal panic alerts
Upgraded my Macpro to Leopard. I am getting a lot of kernal panic alerts or the computer just freezes when idle and then needs to be re-booted by the power switch. Any thoughts?
i have same issue, freezes sometimes during a rise from the doc for an application..and then boom...
sometimes you can ssl to it but then that freezes too...have to usually power cycle it...was having this problem about 1 month ago then upgraded to leopard...still have it...
any ideas?

Why do I keep getting Kernal Panic warnings to restart my new iMac that is running Lion? This is happening as often as 2 times a week. Never happened with any of my other Apples or Macs and I have been using them since the 1980s.

Hi there.
I have been having a lot of trouble with kernal panics (see my recent posts: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5738446#5738446 & http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6011414#6011414 ) One respondent suggested it could be memory, I followed that up and contacted crucial who sent me diagnostic software to check my installed memory, that all came out fine. I'm still getting panics though and I can't seem to get to the bottom of it. I found out that some PB's have a problem with memory slots, mine is not within the serial range though. I have had intermittent panics ever since I bought the machine, at the time I didn't realise they were a big deal so I never checked it out.
My question is, could it still be dodgy memory despite the diagnostic (sorry, for some reason I don't have the app on my machine and I can't remember what it was called. The mem passed the apple hardware test btw.) Also I'm assuming that it's hardware as no software seems to be mentioned in the latest panic log. Each of the latest panics have happened when either itunes is playing music or I'm streaming video using safari. I'll paste the latest log below:

Thanks.KPs are usually associated with a hardware problem. KPs are frequently caused by RAM, but maybe not in your case. The Panlc Log files are difficult to decipher, but they mention USB & Audio. Do you have an external USB device (mouse?) attached. If so, disconnect & see if you still get KPs.
May be a solution on one of these links.

Macbookpro and fcp kernal panics
I've been trying to use a macbookpro 17"with 4gig ram and an AJA iohd box with a sata raid.I keep getting Kernal panic crashes on the timeline.I have tried to use 3 other macbookpros 2 15" and 1 17",
they worked fine.Apple replaced my Logic board but still have not been able to use the system because I am still getting Kernal panics.I have reset all software, replaced ram.I know its got to be this computer,
but apple will not replace it.
any ideas would help, thanks, Dave Z.Or other hardware related issues.
Had a logic board die that caused them.
I've seen replacement logic boards go bad as well.

Well, my iPad has kernel panics about everyday, when I get on facebook mostly. Basically, any app I get on it will either: freeze and flicker into a black home screen, or it will have a kernel panic and turn off. I am also having problems with it charging. When the iPad is on, it charges just fine. But when it dies and I plug the charger in, it doesn't recognize that it is charging. But, when I take the charger out, it thinks it is charging.

Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. It could take well over an hour! Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod. As before, say "yes." Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time. If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device. Corrective action is simple - choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here. You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without be charged again. Also, if you have IOS-7, read this. -
Getting kernal panic when trying to install OS after HDD install
I just replaced the HD in an iBook G3 I have laying around with a toshiba 40gb. The install went fine and I formatted it in disk utility using mac os x extended (journaled). I ran it for errors and it checked out fine. I also ran the apple hardware test CD and everything checked out there too.
The problem is I am getting a kernal panic no matter what I do. I started off installing 10.3 and the first disc installs fine, but then when it restarts it gets an instant kernal panic. I tried 10.4 with the same results. Then I tried the 10.2 discs that the iBook came with and it would get the very last step of the install on the 1st disc and would not go any farther. It said "one minute remaining" for over an hour.
I have taken a picture of the error log that shows up and you can see it at the following link:
The top line got cut off but it says "panic(cpu 0): Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerBook4,3"
Like I said, everything checks out hardware wise and i have tried three different versions of OS X. I'm at a loss of what to do so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!Did you format the hard drive before attempting the installation(s)?
In order to format the hard drive:
Start up from the Install disc by holding down the c key as the startup chime is ending. Hold down the c key until you see the progress indicator (which looks like a spinning gear).
In Tiger, select the language and continue. (In Panther, click continue, but do not go further.)
In Tiger, go to the Utilities menu (in Panther, the Installer menu) and open Disk Utility.
Click on the top hard drive icon in the left side panel.
Choose the "Partition" tab in order to format the drive to a single partition.
Click the Options button.
For PowerPC Macs, choose "Apple Partition Map." For Intel Macs, choose "GUID Partition Table."
Click OK.
Choose to format as one partition.
Name the hard drive by typing the name in the "Name" field.
Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the Volume Format.
Click on the "Partition" button.
Choose Erase tab.
Select the named volume of your hard drive in the left-side panel. (The hard drive icon which appears under the top hard drive icon.)
Click "Erase."
The hard drive is now ready for the installation of the OS.
Go to First Aid Tab and Repair Disk, then Repair Disk Permissions.
Quit Disk Utility.
Be certain to use either the install discs that came with the iBook or a retail version of the later OS. Installation discs made for other Mac models may not work on the iBook.
Good luck. -
Keep getting kernal panic crashes
to cut a long story short....
start getting kernel panel in mavericks quite a few months ago
ended up taking to apple...diagnosed as hard drive issue, replaced hard-drive
after hard drive replaced, still getting kernel panics (various things including chrome)
format and reinstall OS (Mavericks)
took back to apple service provided, replaced hard-drive again.
Upgraded to Yosemite however in mid 2010 iMac it really slowed things down. Had to take out third party ram because kept result in crashes that quickly lead to damaged sections on hard-drive so had to reintall OS. Only had 4Gb of original apple ram.
due to sluggy performance of yosmite, recently (today) "downgraded" to mavericks.
Install third party ram back into computer (now have 12 Gb)
Experienced 2 kernal panics already. Can't work out what the issues is
Any help would be much appreciated. This is pretty bare bones. Not much intsalled since "downgraded"to Mavericks. Log below
Thanks in advance

not sure if it's the keymap i had that since i bought my MacBook Pro and i never got kernal panic before...
also what other keymapping program you know of that is better? cuz i need to make the Option on the right side a "ENTER" function.. -
Four weeks and first kernal panic (i think)
I just shut down my computer, or at least I thought I did, and left my room for about 30 minutes. When I returned my fan was running full blast and the computer was 'off' (black screen)...
When I tried to turn the computer on, it did not respond to the power button until i held it down for approx 3 seconds...then it booted up and said that the OS had unexpectedly quit and I sent an error report to apple that had the word 'kernal' in it (i couldn't decipher the rest).
I have had no problems with this machine at all, but it is a replacement for the one that just 'stopped working' so I'm a little paranoid - Can anyone explain to me what might have just happened to my computer? Thanks for the link! Okay, so it wasn't a kernal panic.
That's good to know...
but I still have no clue what happened.
weird. It is running fine now, but it was a little disconcerting to enter a room with my 'off' computer's fan running full blast!
if anyone has any ideas, please share.
thanks!

Updated to Tiger and get kernel panics
Hi,
I updated my desktop G4 (quicksilver) to Tiger last week, and have suddenly started getting kernel panics. I am not sure what to do about it, other than trying to reinstall Tiger. It didn't happen the first few days of Tiger, so I am not sure it's the OS. Do I need to be worried about my drive? could i lose information with this?
I do have one bad hard drive inside the machine which crashed in November; I haven't removed it yet. Would removing that bad drive correct the issue? There is a 2nd drive in the machine that is fine and an external firewire drive that is now my main book drive.
Or could the panic be the result of peripherals, such as sound cards, MIDI gear, printer? or something like software? I use a lot of 3rd party software and have updated quite a few of them in the past week, since updating to Tiger. I did call Apple Care and they suggested removing all external devices and apps...way too much if I don't need to do it.
Help?
Thanks
Kat
G4 powermac Mac OS X (10.4.8) also have macbook intel - 10.4.8Wow -
What an incredible answer. I am posting the panic log here, but I remembered that I recently just plugged in my MIDI yamaha clavinova to my sound card, and that's when the panics began. Could be a coincidence, but I unplugged it to see if they stop.
I will also remove the bad drive. It crashed in November. Disk first aid was unable to repair it and the genius at the apple store told me that something physically broke inside the drive, so there is no salvation for it. I was able to recover most data before it all disappeared, luckily. I just haven't gotten around to removing it and reinstalling the original apple drive.

G4 powermac Mac OS X (10.2.x) -
Installed 10.6.7 and Getting Kernel Panic on Boot
I got the notice to update to 10.6.7 on my 15" 2.66 i7 and when it restarted to install the update, I immediately got a kernel panic. I was able to get it to boot into safe mode and I did a time machine backup. After some research and work..
I ran a 35 pass zero out, and then straight reinstalled OS-X from my discs. I still get the same panic from boot.

The only thing left that I can think of is that the update fubarred the HDD. I put an aftermarket 640GB drive into it about 3 months ago. I was considering re-installing the factory drive and see what happens. I have tried everything that I could within the OSX restore discs, and nothing seems to help. It seems weird that a 35 pass + restore didn't cure it, if it was software related. Which makes me think firmware/mechanical.
Thoughts?I think you missed the part where I said:
"I ran a 35 pass zero out, and then straight reinstalled OS-X from my discs. I still get the same panic from boot."
I still had issues after a fresh install. So, I did a 35 pass zero out and re-installed. Same error.
I just finished installing the factory drive, and mysteriously everything works fine now. Either the update corrupted the aftermarket drive, or the update causes the computer to recognize my aftermarket drive and make it "not work". Either way, I am just going to leave the factory drive in it, as I am selling the laptop and getting a newer version. -
I GET KERNAL PANICS HERES THE LOG.

Snow Leopard Freezes, Reboots, Crashes, Kernel Panics
I have a Unibody MacBook Pro 15 inch, late 2008. I got it with Leopard, and I had absolutely no problems at all with it until I stupidly upgraded to Snow Leopard in September 2009. Since then my computer crashes a lot. Here is a list of problems I've had so far, most of them on seemingly random occasions:
- Kernel Panics (happened around 2 times, both while rendering a video in Final Cut Pro)
- Complete system freeze where the screen freezes on the last thing displayed, the last sound played keeps looping (if I'm in the middle of a Skype conversation or listening to music, for example) and nothing will react (including mouse, caps lock, eject key, the system won't even sleep when I close the lid) requiring a hard reset by holding the power button (happened at least 3 times). This has sometimes happened when all I was doing is listening to music on iTunes, I wasn't even touching the computer, and all of a sudden I just hear the last half second of music looping forever.
- Complete freeze where the mouse would still move, but the system would reboot automatically after a few seconds (happened once or twice)
- Reboots without any warning (happened around twice)
Basically these are my major problems, and all of these have happened in 10.6.1 and 10.6.2, except the kernel panics which have not happened (so far) since I updated to 10.6.2.
I have tried repairing permissions, it didn't change any of the above behaviours.
This is what I noticed:
These problems happen regularly, around one or two times week.
_*The problems only seem to happen when I set my computer to use the dedicated graphics instead of the integrated graphics*_ via "System Preferences > Energy Saver > Higher Performance". If I set that setting to "Better Battery Life", then the problems don't seem to happen at all.
However, I use Photoshop and Final Cut Pro a lot, so I need to set the graphics to +Higher Performance+. Dedicated graphics is one of the reasons I bought this computer, so setting it to Better Battery Life isn't a solution for me.
As I've said before, I'm running OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2, and my machine is a late 2008 Unibody MacBook Pro with 4GB RAM and processor of 2.53 GHz.
I have performed an upgrade to Snow Leopard from Leopard, as opposed to a clean install. Trying a clean install of either Leopard or Snow Leopard will be my last resort if nothing else works, however, I am asking you whether you can think of anything else to solve my problems without having to do a clean install, as it would require lots of work and it would be a big hassle for me.
Thank you very much.I am having the EXACT same problem, however I have an iMac (24"display, 2.93GHz, 4GB ram.) I think I've narrowed it down to Quicktime, but can't figure out a solution. I have both Quicktime Pro (7.6.3) and the version that comes with snow leopard - Quicktime 10.0.
Here is a list of applications which have been running during a freeze, shutdown or restart.
-iDVD
-Quicktime 7.6.3
-iMovie
-Safari (only when playing video)
-Adobe soundbooth (one time only)
I've tried everything from permissions repair to a clean SL re-install to everything in between.
Any ideas out there?? -
Itunes freezing and getting a Device Timeout error
i just got my ipod and was loading songs into the itunes library, everything was fine, then i loaded some songs and itunes froze and was not responding
when i tried again, same problem
the top of itunes says it's "determining gapless playback information X of 15" when it gets to 11 of 15 it freezes. then a couple minutes later i get an error message that says "Device Timeout
The specified I/O operation on \Drive\Harddrisk1|DR2 was not completed before the time-out period expired"
i get a choice of Cancel, Try Again, or Continue - nothing i try seems to work.
Help help helpfixed it - it was a song that was freezing itunes - i unplugged the external drive that houses my music, deleted the last songs i added to the library and tried again, i loaded the songs one by one and found that one song froze itunes, i repeated the process and deleted the song, tried again without that song and everything worked fine
