Leopard freezing at startup

I have a Power Mac G5 1.8GHZ (Single), with installed Leopard a few months back and no issues during or following the install. I also have a MacBook 2GHz Core 2 Duo that I use on a day-to-day basis so the G5 hasn't been used frequently since the Leopard install. When I turned on the G5 last night it started up normally until it reached the start screen for Leopard (Dock loaded, Background loaded, task bar at the top loaded). At this point it became unresponsive. I could move the cursor around but the pinwheel was spinning and I could not click on anything.
I have tried waiting to see if it is just a slow load, restarting the computer, resetting the PRAM, resetting the SMU, reinstalling Leopard. I've also tried, unsuccessfully, to boot from the Tech Tool Deluxe CD however it just opens the OS like normal and freezes, and booting in safe mode. When starting up in safe mode it asks for the login information then unceremoniously freezes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

it looks like you were doing an erase and install. FYI, during the installation at the screen where you choose the destination disk there is an "Options" button. clicking on it gives you a choice of an install type. did you go through setup assistant after finishing the install? if you have it was definitely an erase and install. in that case the problem must be caused by hardware. let's check if this is your hard drive. boot from the install DVD and as soon as you are past the language screen go to the Utilities menu at the top and start disk utility. run repair disk on your hard drive.

  • Leopard freezes on startup

I just had an urge to play some fallout and fallout 2, but as has been discussed several times, support for 256 colors was removed a while ago. To solve that I installed NVIDIADrivers256ColorsFix3.0 which replaced the new graphic drivers with old ones that supported 256 colors.
The install required a restart but under the boot, the computer froze at the apple-logo. I forced it to shut down, but at next but the problem was the same. I could start in safe mode but after a repair in Disc Urility and a zap of the PRAM the problem percist.
I'm pretty sure the problem is the new drivers but have no idea how to replace them again.
    any help will be appreciated
    regards

Nevermind - solved it by manually reupdating to 10.5.6... but still can't play fallout though

  • Updated from Leopard to Snow Leopard, then upgraded to Lion, now my system is freezing on startup. Can anyone help?

Updated from Leopard to Snow Leopard, then upgraded to Lion, now my system is freezing on startup. Can anyone help?

Try a Safe Boot: Restart holding down the shift key until you (hopefully) see a grey progress bar. Once booted restart as normal from the Apple menu. Any change?
How much RAM do you have installed?

  • Consistently freezes on startup

I have had this problem for a while, even before I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard. Every time I start up my computer, the computer freezes. If I don't touch the mouse during the startup, it freezes at the gray screen with the wheel. If I wiggle the mouse it waits until the desktop pops up to freeze. After a forced restart, the computer it fine. It is just rather annoying that it does this. The only problem found when I run disk utility was this:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
I have heard that you can uninstall remote desktop to fix this, but when I use spotlight to search, nothing shows up for Remote Desktop.

My iMac was freezing on startup--gray screen with the apple logo then freeze. I also found that it wasn't going to sleep--the screen would sleep but the computer would still be running.
I tried everything to solve it, from starting in safe mode to repairing the disk and disk permissions to reinstalling 10.6. I checked my startup folder and nothing was there.
I simply unplugged my iPhone dock that I had plugged into a USB port on the back.
That seems to have been the problem. Whether it was the dock itself or something is wrong with the USB port, my iMac now starts up and shuts down without incident (and fast too).
Also, I have found that the system will sleep.
So, I guess unplugging a peripheral solved my issue (so far).

  • IMac A 1200 freezes on startup

iMac A 1200 freezes on startup and screen gets multiple lines on it.
Cannot start up even from Snow Leopard DVD or external backup drive.

Check the Repair extension programs and look for your number. Whether you qualify also depends on how old your computer is. The extension cuts off three years after the original purchase date, but they have been known to make exceptions.

  • Imac freezes during startup stops @ blue screen & have tried everything

My imac freezes during startup, it gets to blue screen and just sits. I have tried to boot from the Leopard 10.5 install disk, and just sits, can't get to log in screen. Have run the disk utility and it says disk appears to be ok, Won't startup up in safe boot, blue screen just sit. Have tried 'fsck' fix, just sits at blue screen. Have reset PRAM, I don't know want else to try. Disk utility & "fsck" says 'disk appears to be ok'. When exiting fsck, it will start the process then stops. Does anyone have any suggestions, I have not tried to reinstall 10.5 yet.
    Thanks in advance
    Paula

After reading resolutions TS1541 & other threads, I decided to try to archive & reinstall 10.5 from install disc. Well that made things worse, sometime during reinstall, system locked up, I looked at the log during install & it had been locked up about 3 hours and now I have nothing. no systems files, using Target( firewire cable) disc with my macbook, I can see I have previous system folder & a folder that say system. but Install disc does not see OS.
Do I need to take it to an apple store for repair or what. It's only 3 years old.
    please help

  • I have a MacBook Pro, it recently started freezing upon startup. It would get to a blue screen and just sit there. I've tried booting in safemode to run disk repair and still doesnt help. If I do manage to get past the blue screen, it still freezes

My mac keeps freezing upon startup. It will get to the blue screen and promptly freeze. If I manage to get past the blue screen, and open up youtube on google chrome, it will freeze before it loads youtube. I've tried safeboot and disk repair, nothing seems to work. I even tried to factory reset it but it wont connect to my internet when I reboot with power + option.. any ideas?

This can be used to boot the machine and delelte enough files to get it to boot normally.

  • Mac Pro on 10.6.8 freezes after startup

Since updating to 10.6.8 my 2009 MacPro will freeze after startup when opening finder, safari and itunes (so far). No beach ball and ForceQuit doesn't work. Resolved only by a hard shutdown with the off switch and restarting.  Never a problem on restart. This problem seems identical to that described in an archived discussion (after an update to 10.5).  Refer: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2018112?threadID=2018112  .
I have followed those suggestions without success:
-run AHT and no issues found
-run disk utility to verify and repair permissions
-used Rember to check memory and no issues
Grateful for any suggestions; thank you.

It means that a third-party system modification you installed is causing the problem.
Reboot as usual (not in safe mode) if you haven't already done so. Don't launch any of your usual applications. Launch the Terminal application, copy or drag -- do not type -- the line of text below into the window, and press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
Next, do the same thing with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
That's one line, not two. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Next, this command:
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
Again, one line. Finally, one more:
    ls -1 /Library/{InputManagers,StartupItems}
Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • 17-inch, Mid 2009 mac book pro freezes on startup

My MBP occasionally freezes on startup.
it is a 17-inch, Mid 2009 model details as follows
Processor  2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512 MB
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74)
The problem first occured before upgrading to Lion, but does seem to be getting progressively worse.
I start the mbp, get the login screen, enter login and password succefully, and get the opening screen appropriate for my login...
BUT am unable to select anything or perform any actions except using the on/off button to turn the mbp off, when its turned on it usually logs me in succesfully and then behaves as normal until the next login or the one after that ...
Anyone have any ideas what might cause this or if there are any known cures?
    Thanks

    Reinstalling Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Premiere Elements 3 Freezes on startup in Windows 7

I just loaded Premiere Elements 3 on a laptop with Windows 7 and it freezes on startup. I can't find any reference to drivers for Windows 7. I've used PE3 satisfactorily with Windows XP and want to continue to use it. Does anyone have a solution that doesn't involve upgrading to a later version or switching to another video editing program? I've already uninstalled and reinstalled.

Thanks for all three responses. Long story short: I've made progress to where Premiere Elements 7 now freezes *after* startup in Windows 7.
Neale: It's Windows Home Premium on a Sony VGN-NW270F with an Intel Core2 Duo T6600 2.2 GHz processor, with 4GB of memory. I hope this additional information is helpful in diagnosing my problems with PE3 version 3.02 and Windows 7.
Steve: I found I already had PE3 Version 3.02, so that was not the problem. However, I did uninstall and re-install, with no better results. I then poked around in the Windows 7 Help files and stumbled across the misnamed "Compatibility Manager" (it's really an "Incompatibility Manager"). When I set PE3 to run under XP Service Pack 2, PE3 finally started up. I then found I could load video files and edit them. But, after working on this for a few days, I tried to use the Transitions and Effects Button. That invariably sends PE3 off to La La Land, which only a power off will fix (I haven't had to power off so many times since I used Windows 95 and the early DOS systems, which doesn't seem like progress.)  So far, I haven't found a solution to this new freeze problem. Any suggestions as to what might make PE3 work properly?
You say that PE3 is a relatively old version of the program. Well, not that old -- "old" programs dated 2007 should work on operating systems released only two years later. However, I haven't upgraded from PE3 because it worked really well on my XP machine and subsequent releases of PE appear to be buggy. From what I've read in the Forum here, I wouldn't upgrade to PE8 because even that version doesn't seem to work well with Windows 7. I've wasted enough time on this already.
John: Unfortunately, I just have Windows 7 Home Premium, the plain vanilla OS.  So far, I am thoroughly unimpressed with Windows 7. New operating systems are supposed to bring advantages, not be incapable of running programs that ran under previous operating systems.
    Thanks,
    George

  • Acrobat Reader 9.1.x freezes after startup

    Hello,
Our Acrobat Reader is having problems on some machines during startup that it completly freezes after startup.
I've traced this with procmon and have seens that a certain file "sharedEvents" is trying to to somthing buth it is hanging on
lock - unlock. Killing All process of Acrobat Reader and deleting this file and then re-starting the program isn't helping because it keeps 0 kb and the mentioned behaviour is trying to do something with this file.
the file can be found in %appdata%\adobe\acrobat\9.0
Our profile's is redirected , it is working for most of the users but some users are having this problem.
Can anybody tell me what Acrobat Reader is doing with this file and is there a work around to initialize everything back again so the
user can startup the program normally so it is not freezing after startup without having to remove and install it back again ?
    Best regards,

    Hi,
The problem I'm having is a problem on the journal file. After some more investigating it look that the problem can be related to oplocks since we have enbaled oplocks on our server (were the file is placed trough folder redirection). We will check this ...
I've already disabled oplocks on client side and then everything is working however we are using Vista in combination with offline files and if you disbale oplocks then offline files will not work so we are looking a bith further to see what we can do on server side ... to be continued ...
    Best regards,

  • Illustrator CS6 crashes/freezes on Startup

am having severe Problems with my Illustrator. Whenever I started it by clicking on the icon, it said that it is unable to set the maximum amount of files that can be opened. So I downloaded the launchAI.command (http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/unable-set-maximum-number-files1 .html), but now I cant find my saved files any more. In the dialogue box (whenever I'm saving) it doesnt show any of my folders, and if i save it in a standard one (like the desktop), it doesnt appear there. I cannot find that saved file through any other programm than Illustrators "recently opened" but as soon as its not in that list any more, its gone forever.
Furthermore, it does not prompt the error of the maximum file settings any more, but it just freezes on startup. It does make no difference there wether i start it via the launchAI.command or via the normal Shurtcut Icon.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program, deleted preferences, presets, caches, fonts, wacom drivers, linotype and used the Adobe CS Cleaner (all the suggestions i could find so far) - still it is the same. I have contacted the Chat support as well, but was not provided with a solution there either. What should I do now?

Moved the discussion to Illustrator forums.

  • I movie 09 freezing upon startup of progam

I have i movie 09 and have been using it successfully without any problems for over 6 months. During that time, I have been working on a movie. It is currently 45 minutes long and includes sound effects and songs that I have added from garageband. I recently added a voiceover from Garageband, via i tunes and now the whole projects freezes on startup, i cant even access any of the functions.
    Could it be:
1.i tunes incompatibility, either i movie or itunes needs an update, or both?
    2. Movie is too long?
    3. Problem with i movie..
I still have another 30 mins of the movoe to complete and want to be sure that I can continue to edit this film at a later date. I would also like to store it on an external drive, but have read in other posts that this is not as easy as it sounds. Has anyone had the same problem, or can offer any assistance here.
lots of work has gone into this project and would hate to lose it so far into the project.
at the moment, I have not upgraded any program (i movie, i tunes, garageband) in fear of losing any of my projects, should i be fearful.
any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • Mail freezes on startup

    Hi there,
I just got my new macbook pro (equipped with OSX mountain lion) and after one week,
    Mail freezes at startup.
At my old macbook I never had this problem.
I already looked up other discussions on this topic, and tried various solutions
(reinstall everything, delete mail.apple.com, delete some other files, etc.)
I am now back at where I started, still without a solution.
Also, I cannot click anything from the top menu-bar when I'm in Mail
(Not even the little apple in the left upper corner),
therefore I first have to go into another program.
The only option is to force-quit the whole thing.
I hope any of you can help me solve it, It would really help me out a lot...
    Thanks on beforehand!

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you also have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Satellite L750 - Win7 freeze on startup screen frequently

Hi, my L750 has been having this freeze on startup issue frequently in the pass few days (almost 2 out of 3 times), it just stopped loading just before the windows logo would show up. at first it would continue running after I moved the mouse or hit a key, but today these tricks wouldn't work.
I have to press the power button to force restart it, and it show a window repair option, which I chosen, then it freeze after the process bar disappear (hence, blank screen and nothing, no harddisk or processor light), force restart again and it boot up ok this time.
Any idea what could be the issue here?

finally have a chance to restart my laptop..
so I ran a checkdisk which claimed I have 2 bad file and 60 reprase file (which I have no idea what that is), and I also put the battery pack back (have to remove it so it wont be too hot when I'm rendering graphic etc.). *and the laptop seems start up ok for the last few times..*
