Leopard/G5 sleep & racing fan

(I upgraded to Leopard by archive & install on a G5,2x2.) 24 hrs later, After putting the G 5 to sleep I returned 30 minutes later to find the fans screaming fast. I had to force shutdown with the power button. After I restarted the fans were back to normal and there seemed to be some activity by Spotlight. ( I have no fan problem while the G 5 is awake nor when I was on 10.3.9 ) I now have energy saver set to never sleep for the hard drive.

I had the nearly the same problem after I installed Leopard (archive and install), although I'm not runnig external drives. I was afraid it was the G5 or perhaps the fact that I recently replaced my start-up drive before installing leopard. I had to leave town unexpectedly for a week and the fans were blowing full blast when I return . . . they were probably going like that for a week and I thought my beautiful machine was done for!
Well, she is 100% now. I was able to, of course, reset her when I got back home. I read around on the forms and did three things:
1. Reset the power management system preferences to "default" in the system preferences menu
2. I downloaded the COMBO 10.5.1 update (after downloading the 10.5.1 "Software Update" update
3. Reset the SMU/PRAM
The combo update can be downloaded from Apple's OS downloads page. I don't think it is listed as "combo," just as "10.5.1 Update."
Reseting the SMU is a little more tricky, because how you do it depends on what model Powermac G5 you have. I have a late 2004, so mine was as simple as unplugging her for more then 2 minutes. Other models have a button somewhere near the motherboard. Search this site for "reset SMU g5" or "reset PRAM g5" . . . some models have a PMU, and that's kind of the same but different somehow .. .
I was getting "ATA" errors, and I think the problem was that the computer was not waking the after-market start-up HD from sleep. This was probably due to some incompatability between the HD and Leopard. I think I fixed by downloading clean script via the combo update and engaging that clean script by resting the SMU so it used the new script.
Now I can sleep my G5 baby and wake her when I want and I didn't need to downgrade, format my HD, return my HD, or purchase a new computer!
I would also guess that you don't want to let your computer sleep while Spotlight is indexing a drive. I am a little surprised that Spotlight wouldn't keep your computer awake . . .maybe there is an option for this?

G5 2.5 sleep / racing fan?

Hi all,
I have a problem with my Mac G5 2.5 Quad. I have recently installed Leopard 10.5.3 successfully.
Whenever I try and sleep that mac, the monitors go to sleep and then the Mac goes quiet and after about 30 seconds or so the fans come on really loud. The only way to stop it is to hold the power key to turn it off?
I've tinkered but to no avail. Even to the point of a complete 'erase and install' of Leopard 10.5.3. But the problem persists? The only software that has since been re-installed on the Mac is Adobe CS3, Microsoft Office, SuperDuper, Filemaker and Appzapper. There were no problems with any of theses apps before Leopard.
I used the original Install disc to do a hardware check and it all came up fine.
Does anyone know how I can solve this annoying problem?
Any help would be much appreciated

I have a similar issue with my Power Mac G5 dual 2.0, however I didn't get my first instance until after I replaced the original Apple 160 GB hard drive with a new 400 GB Western Digital SATA2 Caviar Drive. I just dropped in the drive with no jumpers to see if I ran into any of the issues that other users had run into and reported on. I suspect there may be a relationship. I just bought this system used 2 weeks ago, and the original owner said the original drive was basically new because he replaced it with a different drive when he first bought the machine. It is running Leopard with all the updates.
I used the disk utility to restore the contents of the original drive to the new drive. Ran drive verify then permissions repair (there were some issues but it repaired them). Seemed to run well until this incident.
So, I have two variables. I will likely attempt some jumper settings first (power management and SATA2 to SATA1). Easiest thing to change.
If that fails, I will revert back to the old drive and see if it runs fine.

"Connection Lost" on boot + Wake from sleep black screen and racing fans

When my iMac boots, I receive a "Connection Lost" symbol indicating the Bluetooth Mouse, yet Bluetooth is not turned on. How do I get rid of this? I have been having the "wake from sleep" issue for the last few weeks (black screen, racing fans) and wonder if this is somehow related.
I have reset pram, nvram, trashed the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file, unplugged the computer, repaired permissions, etc. to no avail. I have to power down with the power button and reboot every time it goes to sleep. This is getting very annoying. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I used to have a similar problem when I used a Kensington Turbo Mouse Pro (not wireless). The computer would wake from sleep in the wee hours on its own and in the morning it would be so hot I could fry and egg on it. The Mouse was obviously so sensitive that any slight vibration would trigger a signal to the computer and wake it up.
Also I got the connection lost message on startup even though Bluetooth was not turned on. I figured that for some reason the Turbo Mouse was not discovered in the startup process. When this happens the System gives a warning that since no mouse was connected, I would have no way to control the computer and it advised me to turn on a Bluetooth mouse. It would then search for one for a minute or two. I just unplugged the Kensington Mouse and plugged it back in and I would usually get a message informing me that a mouse had been detected and the startup process would continue.
As soon as I substituted a Mighty Mouse for the Kensington Mouse, everything has been just fine since. I also uninstalled the Kensington Mouseworks software and started using USB Overdrive which gives far more options and a far better Mouse feel than the Apple Mouse settings.

Late '06 Mac Pro w/ Leopard Shutdown & Sleep Problems

I recently did a clean install of Leopard on a brand new hard drive for my Late '06 Mac Pro. I currently have all updates installed, and the system is running very fast and very stable. But!
I've been experiencing two problems over the week I've had Leopard installed, and I would just like to know if other MP users are sharing these as well...
1. Half the time I wake the computer from sleep, the fans blast off for about 10 seconds before the desktop is shown. Sometimes when the computer goes to sleep, via Energy Saver, my hard drives keep spinning.
2. Shut down takes an excruciatingly long time. My typical shut down lasts around a minute to a minute and a half.
I've read around and have seen a few problems like this, but I want to know if there are a larger majority of people with a Mac Pro who are experiencing either of these in Leopard.
It's not such a nuisance, being I don't have to wait for shut down and I can wait around a few seconds when waking up the computer. Though, here's to hoping 10.5.3 or a firmware update can fix these two issues!

I had re-start from sleep problems on my '06 MP. Root cause was NG ram. Replaced wit hApple ram from OWC.com and it fixed the issue. That ram caused other issue such as frequent spinning beachball and just the feel was not right.
What can you try? i'd suspect ram but first any attached devices such as a 7 port Belkin USB hub which messed with deep sleep on mine and was replaced with a CyberPower USB hub.
Also do a smc power manager reset. Just unplu everything and wait a few mins the attach Apple keyboard and mouse power up and see what happens. One thing at a time.

Yes, look in Activity Monitor (Applications /Utilities /Activity Monitor.app) and see what it eating up all the %CPU. If anything is over 40%, post the name here to get advice or just kill it straight away with the red 'Quit' button.
If nothing is using up CPU resources, but the fans are going full blast, do an SMC reset. Read the instructions here:

When sleeping the fans spin up to maximum

I've got a G5 here at work and when I put it to sleep, the fans turn on full blast, and stay that way until I wake it up. Any ideas?

Hi TopoTone! I'm new to the Apple Forum & have joined to glean some info about a hardware issue similar to the one you described!
Minor difference is that my G5 fails to wake up when I hit the power switch so I have to shut down! The fan maxing 1st happened once about 6 months ago for several hours then then slowed down & resumed normal condition, almost silent. Only system malfunction I've noticed recently is the desktop switching between 2 alternating images on each new startup. Also the display preferences randomly switch occasionally.
I've been unable to load Classic since the first system update after installing Tiger which is annoying but not a major issue as I run OS9.2.2 on an older G4 Power PC
I've owned this machine since January 04 & it's been rock solid since then & has only been showing signs of stress recently. I read a response to another topic which suggested gathering of dust as a possible culprit for such a problem as we are having. I can see this making sense as it would make the fan work harder. But why when the machine is sleeping?

After installing Leopard computer seems to be sleeping but fan is on

I have a 867 MHz G4 with 1.12 GB memory, so I upgraded to Leopard. When I tried to select the sleep mode for the computer, it seems like it's sleeping: the monitor goes black, iChat goes offline, but the fan remains on and the power light remains on instead of the pulsating sleep mode. Is the computer really sleeping? Or in half sleep mode? I then tried to wake the computer up, it does seem like it was waking up from sleep. Is this a bug? Or something I need to reset in my computer?

If the power light is pulsating then it is in sleep mode. If it isn't pulsating then its not in sleep mode.
I was having a similar problem and deleted the power management plist, then rebooted.
This plist is located in /library/preferences/systemconfiguration. It is called com.apple.PowerManagement.plist

No sleeping for fan and hd on imac

After installing icloud (coincedence??), the sleeping mode of my imac does not work appropriate, because there is no full sleepimg mode, the harddisk (and the fan) keep on working. The display insted does fall into sleeping mode. I checked the energy-saver, the buttons are right.
I also tried to put my imac in sleeping mode without cabels and other devices and with all programs forced to stop.
I also have tried to run the safe mode a few times, the pram reset and the smc reset. Nothing helps so far.

What I assume you did here was you cloned your internal SSD to a external HD using software.
Now it's likely booting off the external HD, the fans might even be racing perhaps?
Hold the option key down while rebooting, and select the internal SSD as your boot drive, then go to System Preferences > Startup drive and select the SSD drive to boot from.
That will take care of that.
Now your external clone on the HD is just that, a clone of your SSD.
If your "HD" is another partition (space) on your SSD that's basically the same thing.
If you had personal files on the "Hd" they are now gone, overwritten by the cloning process.
Hope you have backups.

G41m p28 Sleep without fan ?

I can't get my PC to sleep under Win7; the fan stays on.
The manual says:
if the mainboard has a System Hardware Monitor chipset on-board, you must use a specially designed fan with speed sensor to take advantage
of the CPu fan control.
I've checked the 4-pin CPUFAN and the control pin is blank with 3 only wires to the fan.
Does this mean it cannot sleep without the fan on ?
I have read elsewhere that certain USB pins can be selected so that the whole board powers down on sleep, but I can't find anything that matches that description in the manual.

You need to set the ACPI Standby Mode to S3 instead of S1 in BIOS Setup.

Snow Leopard, iMac Temperature and Fans?

Since getting my iMac eighteen months ago I have checked the temperatures regularly.
Unfortunately I did not write them down and cannot remember what the highest "normal" temperature was, though the hottest place was always the "Power Supply Position 1".
One thing I am certain of is that I thought the 3 fans just had one set speed because every time I checked the Optical Drive was always around 699rpm and the HD and CPU fans were always 1199rpm.
Until a couple of weeks ago I had not updated the original OS which was 10.5.2, but then I updated to 10.5.8 in one go and last week I upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.1 by installing it over Leopard.
Today I was doing some simple editing in Final Cut Pro for an hour and checked the temperature.
The Power Supply Position 1 was 176 degrees F. I can't be sure but I have a feeling that I have never seen it above 169.
I then put a 20 minute video in Compressor to encode and the temperature rose to a maximum of 179.6 and the CPU fan was around 1500rpm which I have never seen before.
Has SL had any effect on temperatures or fan speeds?
Are these figures normal?
My room was only 66 degrees which is fairly cool.

That's really what I was looking for Ikrupp, some figures from other users under moderately intensive operations (not writing emails!).
Yesterday, when I had finished using Compressor the temperature started dropping from almost 180°F and when it reached 176°F the fan had also dropped to 1199rpm so it looks as though it doesn't speed up until the temperature exceeds 176°F.
It appears that your figures are pretty close to mine. However, if others could give me figures they get under moderately intensive use, it would give me final confirmation that all is well (or not).

Ix4-300D Issues on Sleep and Fan Speed - Possible Feature Request

Can I find out why when the drives go to sleep, why cant the display panel turn off and the fan slow down?
My NAS is only used at a certain time of day, which I can use the power off/power on schedule, but there are times during the week when I want to access it. So, I can use the power switch to turn it on but then it stays on until the next scheduled off time. Cant Wake-On_Lan be programmed to wake up the unit in the Power Off state (If it should, then mine is not working).
It would be good to have a sleep mode like a "normal PC" where sleep is where everything is turnd off on the Nas except the ability to Wake On Lan.
Failing that, at least an option to turn off the display an leave it off. I dont need to see the front panel and the information it displays.
Also, my fan runs at a constant 1660 RPM and never varies, even when the drives are ON or OFF. It is pumping out cold air, so the unit is not warm and is obviously noisy for no reason at all. I have migrated from and ix2 and the fan ran average 800rpm, even when the drives were heavily utilised.
Why is the fan running so fast when not needed to? Is this another bug in the firmware?
I am running the latest firmware.

Yes, the drives enter sleep mode, but to me, the display should turn off, or there should be a way of turning the display off. I dont need the display on 99.9% of the time. Also, the fan is a 92mm fan with ample cooling power even when the drives are constantly being hit hard, so I dont see why it needs to run at ~1600 rpm when the drives are asleep. Even when the drives are hit hard, it still runs ~1600, never vaires. The system it self is cold (Cpu heatsink, etc) so that led to the question on whether it was actually working 100% (as in varying speed) or is it just fixed at a noisy 1600 rpm for no need.
I worked out on using the magic packet to wake the unit up from OFF mode, which is fine (but annoying as it means some command/software has to initate the wake up)
However, the system should re-shut itself down, if it is still in the Power OFF/ON Time schedule and no activity has occurred. Now, that would be a great feature.
These are very simple additions/features to put into the firmware. Other makes have/do it. They all run some form of Linux. Hopefully, someone listens and the features get added.

Racing Fans

Since yesterday the fans on my mid 2007 iMac have been running hard, specifically the fan dedicated to the processor. What's weird is that the processor (or the HD for that matter) don't seem to be running hot but the CPU fan runs at almost 3,400 RPM constantly. Here's a snapshot of my iStat widget (temps are in degrees F):
I haven't installed any software updates from Apple or any other software for that matter. I've tried repairing permissions, resetting the SMC and PRAM, and letting the thing sit turned off for hours; whenever I start back up, the fans start racing after just a few minutes.
Any other suggestions?

I saw you reset the SMC however try again using the instructions below. You need to disconnect any peripharals. If that doesn't work then run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode, it's possible you have had a fan sensor fail. AHT is a lengthy test (30-60 minutes) and if it does not report an error the first time it should be run 2-3 additional times to be sure. It's time consuming but thorough.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

Sleep heat fan

Last night I put my MBP to sleep just before I went to sleep. In the morning, the MBP was still asleep but super hot and the fan whirling. Is this normal? Should it get hot in the sleep mode?

IPod + sleep = loud fan?

Hoping to get a solution to this...I know the stock answer will involve my PCI-e USB card.
Yes, I have a PCI-e 5 port USB 2.0 card installed on my G5 Quad. How did you guess? It works like a charm, mostly.
The rub is, if I have an iPod connected, whether it's my 30GB video, my Nano, or my 2G Shuffle, and the computer wants to sleep, the screen goes dark, the fans crank up to full blast (LOUD) and the keyboard/mouse become unresponsive. The only way out is a reboot via the power button.
Any ideas?

G5 Quad Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I've learned to live with putting only certain devices on my Sunix USB 2 PCI-E card now, and the Mac sleeps as per normal again.
The 'engrish' response I got from Sunix was that they blamed the attached devices, not the lack of a power management firmware or driver for the Mac. Sigh...
The devices I have that sleep fine on a Sunix USB port are:
1. Logitech MX-1000 mouse
2. Yamaha USB speakers
3. Logitech USB headset.
The following were definitely 'no go', despite working normally on the Sunix card in other respects:
1. External DVD burner (a generic with an NEC mechanism in my case)
2. Canon MP760 multifunction device (printer/copier/scanner).
3. Any other mounted storage device (USB keys, iPods, digital cameras).

Sleep then Fan issue

I have a Power Mac G5 purchased in fall of 2003. The computer went to sleep and when I went to use the computer it didn't wake up but lost all power and shut off. When I turned the computer on the fan started at high speed and has not stopped. I have reset the PRAM and the PMU (unplugged all cables, pushed button and waited 2 minutes then plugged in power cable) downloaded istat pro, checked the activity monitor, ran TechTool Pro Version 4.6.1 everything checks out fine but the fan keeps running at high speed directly after I power the machine on.

I used to have that problem. When the computer would go to sleep or when I would put it to sleep, about ninety seconds after the display went black the fans would start roaring. I'd have to hold the power button to restart it. For me, this problem went away with the Mac OS 10.5.6 update.
Try putting the computer to sleep. Wait until the computer actually falls asleep (no fan activity, power light slowly pulsating) or until the fans go to full speed again. If the computer falls asleep without problem, your fan problem was probably just a singular occurrence, and you have no need to worry. Otherwise, you may want to disable sleep but enable display sleep and drive sleep.
