Leopard Hangs on Software Update Restart

In my infinite knowledge, I didn't purchase Leopard from Apple. So I got a 10.5.0 copy from Amazon. The installation went fine, but when I try a software update (the recent one, with 10.5.1, Garageband and Front Row updates) it hangs on restart. It has a little loading bar, on a blue screen and says "configuring installer", but the bar holds on about 1%. I can counter it by holding in the power button, and restarting again.
I'm pretty stuck here, my Mac is still useable, but the lack of Software update is a big issue. Thanks to everyone in advance.

Ok, just installled 10.5.1 from the Apple Downloads page.

  • On Leopard after running software update computer freezes during restart

    Hi All,
I hope I am posting this in the right place. I have installed Leopard (brand new installation with formating the HD before install). It went lovely. Migrate all of my accounts and settings form my other HD. BTW that other HD was upgraded to Leopard they the upgrade feature of Leopard instal and had the same problem that I'm going to describe here. After installation was complete, I worked on my computer just fine for a few hours, restarted it a few time an it worked great. I've installed software updates (iTunes 7.5 QT7.3 etc...) at this point when my system requested a restart and I click "restart" button, the computer tried to restart and froze at the point when the screen went black but the tower never restarted. In fact after about a minute of system being frozen, all of the fans in the tower went blowing full force.
Now, here is the history. I've done the Leopard upgrade on my system HD a week before this happened and after downloading this software update had the same problem. Can not restart at all. The computer works fine for about 1 day and after that the system starts to slow down a lot.
I called Apple, they didn't know what that was. Went to Apple store, they check the hardware and... It's good. Was advised to reinstall the Leopard on "clean" HD with brand new installation rather then update. I did all this yesterday on my 2nd HD and as I've said above, it worked just fine until I've installed this update.
So, my question to you all. Did anyone else experienced this type of problem?
I'm still on hold wanting for Apple tech support to try and resolve this with them. I was just hoping that some of you may know this and may have a fix/advise for me.
Thank you in advance for your help

  • Reboot hangs after software update

    Hi,
Sometimes when I use the Software Update utility and the computer requires a restart, it restarts normally. But other times (e.g. after the most recent update), on restart it "hangs" at the white screen. (Yes, I do hear the startup chime as expected; then it hangs.)
I've let the computer sit there for a while, figuring that maybe it had to process something, but even after an hour it still is at the same point. If I hold down the power button to shut the computer off and then restart, it seems fine again.
Is this normal? If it's not, any guesses as to what may be happening and what I can do to fix it?
    thanks!
    Fran

The following generally seems to keep me out of trouble:
There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them 10.4.10. compliant. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.

  • Mac freezes on software update restart

Hi, I have had an ongoing problem with my macbook whereby after I install a software update, the mac freezes on the automatic restart and doesn't install. As a result, all of my software is over 12 months old and I can't use itunes without the other new software etc. I have tried installing the combo updates from the apple website and still no luck. I am only running Mac os X 10.5.2 as I can't install a newer version. I would be very grateful if anyone has any suggestions.
    Thanks.

Ok, just installled 10.5.1 from the Apple Downloads page.

  • Software Update Restarts Computer Without Installing

Whenever I try to install my software updates manually, I get the screen saying I must restart my computer after the updates are installed. However, when I click on 'Install and Restart' the computer immediately restarts without installing any of the updates. This has happened repeatedly. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • OS X Software Update, Restart, Wants another Software Update

Is it common to restart after installing a software update, and then have the Software Update checker run again, and return additional updates you need to install?

if it keeps starting update go to Macintosh HD > Library > Updates and empty the content of this folder. It could be that an update file is corrupt and needs to be re downloaded.

  • "no" sign after software update restart

Was running software update for OS x 10.9.2 and it froze on a blank gray screen after restarting. Also, if I let it sit for a really long ite (10 minutes +), the apple logo goes to the "no" sign and if I wait even longer (another 5 minutes of so), it eventually goes away and the blank grey screen remains.
I read the link on how to reboot using the safe mode, PRAM and disk utility method, but to no avail.
    Any help is appreciated!! Thanks!

    Ok..
    Using OS X Recovery ??
Startup your Mac while holding down the Option key.
That should launch the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup diisk, v10.9, then click Restart.

  • Degraded VGA output following Snow Leopard 10.6 software updates

IN the last two weeks I have accepted all Snow Leopard updates. Since installing these updates, the VGA output to a Data Projector and a VGA monitor have degraded, lost colour resolution and gained a red filter effect. I have tested this failure on an updated 3 year old iBook, same problem, and on a 1 year old MacBook Pro - same problem and on my 2008 MacBook Pro. The common link is that all 3 machines have taken all updates issued up to Friday 16th April. But on my MacPro, I have not installed any updates in more than 6 weeks and the problem does not occur when the MacPro signal is sent to the same data projector used with the laptops. Further, a friend has tried their family IBook that has not had any recent 10.6 updates and it works without a problem. There appears to be a problem in recent updates that degrades the VGA signal. Has anyone else had a problem with a post update laptop on a Data Projector and get the same problem, but does not get this problem on a pre- update laptop. The updates were only released in the last 4 weeks.? Warren

Thank you to those of you who have provided support for this problem. I have spoken to the Apple Technical people who have read this thread and expressed concern that it was so repeatable. I think that's there way of saying it may be a software problem I think.
I promised to try one more test for them. Yesterday I received my brand new model MacBookPro 15" i7 processor running the 500Gig 7200 HDD(oh so very nice). This has come with the latest 10.6.3 etc. Took all the instal upgrades. Connected it to the same data projector that 3 of the 5 other machines we have tested, and the same problem exists.
Remember 3 of the 5 have been upgraded to 10.6.3. and the two that still work are running 10.6.2 or lower. There is clearly a software issue now, and I am hopeful the technician I spoke to yesterday is monitoring this thread and will pick up this message. I have a case number so I will call them (when I can find where I wrote it down) next week.
From your feedback folks this is consistent with what you have been seeing also. I also notice in another discussion forum on this site, there is a reported "screen" dimming when connected to a VGA screen. I suspect this is the same problem.
Apple - over to you, I think you have a bug in 10.6.3 (patch and full install)

  • Ipod touch 3rd gen hang during software update

my ipod 3rd gen got hand during ios software update

Hang during restore process: Following Troubleshooting security software will frequently resolve this error. This error can be caused by the default packet size being set incorrectly. There may be third-party software installed that modifies the default packet size in Windows by inserting a TcpWindowSize or MaxGlobalTcpWindowSize entry into the Registry. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance in adjusting this TcpWindowSize values. Typically the default packet size is modified by 3G cellular network card software, ISP communication software, or Internet speed download optimization software. There are legitimate reasons to change the TCP/IP packet size and not use the Windows default settings (for example, network traffic optimization, home/broadband optimization, Enterprise apps optimization such as database apps, Exchange, and more). Deleting the "TcpWindowSize" or "GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize" entries in Windows Registry could affect the system's performance with other apps or on their network connections. Deleting the customized TCP/IP settings may require the reinstallation of any third-party applications that had modified the TCP/IP settings from the Windows default settings. Follow the steps below to remove TcpWindowSize and MaxGlobalTcpWindowSize entries from the Registry.
For Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7: Go to the C:\\Windows folder and launch regedit.
    Go to Edit > Find.
Search for "TcpWindowSize" entries. There are typically multiple entries of TcpWindowSize/GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize spread throughout the entire Registry. If "TcpWindowSize" exists, one or more third-party applications have changed the user's default Windows settings for TCP/IP.
Go to File and select Export. This step will export a copy of the Registry that can be used as a backup of the original settings.
    Delete the "TcpWindowSize" entry.
Search for the next "TcpWindowSize" entry and delete each one until the Registry no longer has any "TcpWindowSize" entries.
Close Regedit, restart the PC, and test.
If you are uncertain as to why these registry entries exist and the PC is a business computer, contact your network administrator and determine what values TCP/IP can be set in their Windows Registry setting so that the PC can update or restore an iOS device rather than deleting the "TcpWindowSize" entry.
If editing the registry does not resolve the issue, restoring on a different computer that did not install the communication software is the step most likely to resolve this issue.

  • Locked out of macbook pro by a software update restart

Every time I update suggested software from the Mac App Store that includes an item requiring a restart, typically a security update, I am locked out of my computer upon restart.  For years I have set my login to: my full name and a blank password, automatic.  At restart, I get stuck in an endless loop of the name and password screen, accepting my entries, 2-3 seconds of gray screen, then the name and password screen.  I can't count the times I have reinstalled my OS to solve this.  At least 20!!  It is as time consuming as it is infuriating.  I have even wiped my hard drive clean and restored my info to a new user.  Still, no love.
    Any clues?

    Eric Root,
I'll give that a shot.  It may take some time before I can verify this as a solution but i will respond.  Thank you.

  • Updated to Snow Leopard (Got all software updates) and dock randomly disappears?

Extra info: Cannot minimise things as there is nowhere to minimise them to
Havn't seen any part of the dock since updated from Leo to S-Leo
    PLEASE HELP!

Go to System Preferences, select Dock.
For the sliders, put them in the middle, about halfway between min/max and small/large. Make sure the "automatically hide and show the dock" is UNCHECKED.
If you still have the problem after doing that, check to see if other users/logins on the computer have the same issue. If they show the dock ok, and it is only your login that has the problem, then go to your username/Library folder, and open the Preferences folder inside of it. Move all files that are com.apple.dock.* to the desktop and restart. If the problem is fixed, then put those files in the trash, otherwise move them back to where they were.
If all users have the problem, go to your hard drive Library folder (not the one inside a user's folder) and open it, then open Preferences folder, then move all com.apple.dock*.* files to the desktop, restart, and see if the problem is fixed. If it is, put those files in the trash, otherwise restore them to where they were.

  • Crash during software update = black screen and no way to Restart

Had to rebuild my hard drive and system from original Leopard install CD.
Subsequently, initiated internet Software Update which transferred OK.
After Software Update restarted to finish installation the process locked up at "54% complete". Restarting to break out of frozen state, (what else might I have done?!) machine begins to come up but screen goes black then text/code at top of screen scrolling down to a message that I need to Restart but such is repeatedly unsuccessful + no way to open CD drive to perhaps begin again from scratch.
Machine is in a partially updated and therefor scrambled state. Suggestions anyone??

You can open the drive by restarting while holding down your mouse button, wired mouse only.

  • ******Leopard Software Update

Will Leopard have a *software update soon?* I love the interface of Leo, Spaces is wonderful and I enjoy working in several applications at once, but I'm having issues with:
DVD Studio Pro 3, Final Cut, AOL, iDVD, iWeb, just to name a few programs that are not working properly.

It's a two-way street. As in the past, Apple will add updates, but you should also be bugging the other software companies to make their ware Leopard compatible. It's not a matter of Leopard being compatible with other software, it's the other way around. Lot's of software is not compatible with Leopard.
I am sure that most manufacturers are busily working on these problems, but the first fixes will most likely come from the software companies one they have their own Leopards running for testing.
I guess the best I can say is to be patient, but I know that doesn't really help

  • IMac frozen after choosing "Restart" from Software Update

Software Update had 2 updates: Latest Safari and latest iTunes. I hit "Install" and it prompted me to restart the computer in order to install the updates. I hit it and then the screen dimmed and I immediatley left to do something else. I assumed it would just do its thing and when I'd be back, it'd be installed and I could log in. Well, I came back about 10 minutes later and found that it was at a blue screen with a swirling indicator graphic (not beach ball, black/grey spiral). It's been like this for 30+ minutes.
The thing is, I'm not sure if it already installed and it restarted and now it's stuck. Or if it was trying to restart but froze here before any installing. So I have no idea what its progress was after I hit "Restart" from Software Update.
I should also mention that I had a problem with Finder and when I relaunched it, it gave error messages rather than opening any Finder window (said something like it couldn't open). Also I had a bunch of other applications that weren't quitting properly so I used Force Quit on them. However, I had Safari open and didn't force quit as I thought the restart/update process would quit for me. I had a huge number of Safari windows open and I remember seeing about 5GB or so of virtual memory being taken up by Safari. I had force quit my other applications becuase they froze but I didn't get a chance to force quit Safari and just proceeded with Software Update Restart since I thought it would just quit Safari as part of the restart process. So I think maybe this frozen screen may be because Safari was taking up so much memory and the quitting is making it freeze. I'm not sure though.
Anyone have any ideas? Should I just try holding the power button and restarting manually and see what happens?
I have the latest iMac, 16GB of RAM (installed from Apple, not third party), SSD + HD

Try a manual hard shut down and then reboot.

  • Slow software updates

Not really a problem - more a gripe:
Why, after I have downloaded a software update, restarted the computer & installed the update am I left hanging for up to 10 minutes waiting for the 'registering updated components' to finish? Surely this should be the quickest part of the process, not the longest? I've noticed the delays ever since installing Snow Leopard.

Hi merrilu & welcome to the forums
Updates used to work with one particular balance of the time between downloading, restarting, waiting etc.
That sequence (of check for new, download, checksum, unpack, move old, move new, check new, remove old, restart if needed, remove download, write receipts, etc. etc.) has now changed just enough that it can raise eyebrows in some users.
Clearly, anyone that has an issue with updates no longer working at all should seek solutions, but the rest of us need to sit on our hands and let the procedures do their thing.
