Leopard iCal "Calendar Cache" subscription refresh bug persists in 10.5.3

The 10.5.3 Leopard update does NOT fix the infamous Leopard iCal "Calendar Cache" bug, as discussed in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6660830 .
This bug, introduced with Leopard, prevents iCal from picking up modifications to events on subscribed calendars. The workaround is to delete "~/Library/Calendars/Calendar Cache" and then refresh calendars. The file deletion can be done automatically by a login Automator script as suggested by a contributor to the thread linked above.
This to me is one of the most embarrassing bugs introduced with Leopard. It has high impact (prevents use of iCal in an enterprise setting) while appearing to be a very simple bug and thus most likely very easy to fix.

Hmm, I did not get the "Calendar Cache could not be moved" message when I updated to 10.5.3.
The bug I'm referring to is different. It is a persistent bug in all Leopard versions to date. It prevents iCal from detecting modifications to subscribed calendars.
For example, say you subscribe to a baseball-game schedule. The organizers decide to change the date of a game in the calendar server. But you arrive at the field on the original date, surprised that you are the only one there. Why? Leopard iCal relies on stale cached information EVEN WHEN EXPLICITLY TOLD TO REFRESH SUBSCRIPTIONS.
The only way around it is to delete the "Calendar Cache" file and then ask for an iCal refresh ON A REGULAR BASIS since otherwise you don't know if subscribed events have been modified or not.
Or, use SunBird.
I don't think this has anything to do with the "file cannot be moved" error some folks are apparently seeing as part of the update to 10.5.3. That probably deserves its own thread?

  • Leopard iCal subscribed calendars flaky

Since updating to Leopard I am having very difficult time with calendars to which I have subscribed in iCal. We use a web based calendar for our company calendar. I subscribed to this calendar under Tiger and had no problems. Since I upgraded to Leopard the results are quite inconsistent. Some calendar events get duplicated one or more times other events do not show up at all. If I delete the subscription and recreate that same subscription item under a different name all of the events show up correctly. The over the next couple of days (sometimes the next couple of hours) problems begin to appear. Again some items will show up twice then three time, then four, etc. Other items simply disappear. I have checked the system log and find no hint as to what is occurring.

The refresh problem deals with the calendar cache. It has become such a problem for my customers that we posted a fix here:

  • Syncing my iCal calendars in iTunes - Not working after installing Leopard

    * I have tried researching this as much as possible before posting this, so I apologize if a solution has already been posted for this issue!
After recently installing Leopard, I have noticed that when I try to sync my iCal calendars to my (5th generation) iPod (using iTunes) that the only calendars showing up as available to sync with are "Home" and "Work". I do not have a "home" or "work" calendar in my iCal. In fact all of my calendars in iCal appear to be working fine, however, I am unable to see any of them when I go to my iTunes to sync them to my iPod. I tried syncing my iPod with the "Home" and "work" calendars, but they are empty. I used to be able to sync with no problem whatsoever. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks a lot for any helpful advise!

    JHeinz,
Glad to hear that contacts are working again.
Other troubleshooting steps involve refreshing the iTunes and iCal plist files.
    1. Quit iTunes and find the com.apple.iTunes.plist file in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. Drag the file to your Desktop, log out/in or restart and check iTunes for expected behavior.
    2. Quit iCal and find the com.apple.iCal.plist file in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. Additionally find the Calendar Cache file in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Calendars folder. Drag both of these files to your Desktop, log out/in or restart and check for desired behavior.
I listed these as separate steps to keep from changing too many things at one time. If you are dissatisfied with the results you can always return the original plist files to their original locations.
    ;~)

  • ICal calendars no longer syncing to ipod using itunes after Snow Leopard

Help! I upgraded yesterday to the new Snow Leopard and I can no longer sync my calendars to my ipod 5G. I do not have an iphone and this is the only way I can see my calendars. Did Snow Leopard "update" the calendars so that iTunes can no longer see them? I get the error message that there is no calendars available to sync, when indeed, I have 10. Please help!

    Hi, some more information...
I worked with Apple on the phone for three hours, to no avail.
the troubleshooting steps are as follows:
    1. deleted from HD/username/Library/Caches the "com.apple.ical folder"
    2. deleted from HD/username/Library/Preferences the file "com.apple.iCal.plist"
    3. deleted from HD/username/Library/Calendars the "Calendar Cache" file
    4. removed and reinstalled itunes
    5. "restored" ipod to factory default settings
    6. exported, deleted, and re-imported all calendars (individually)
    7. plugged in ipod and tried to sync calendars - still not working...
This issue has been escalated up...
After seeing many posts with ical issues with Snow Leopard, I think I am not alone...
    None of this has helped

  • After install snow leopard, ical does not show the events of some calendars

After I install snow leopard, ical does not show all the events, or simple does not show the events of some calendars that I created.
Can somebody solve this problem? Is there some update for ical?

    Try the following:
1 - Go to your user account home folder, and open the library folder within it.
Look for the folder named "Calendars" and inside you might find a bunch of different folders with weird names. If they are there that means your calendars might not be lost.
2 - Look for the file "Calendar Cache". That file might be corrupted. Trash it. You may want to save a copy of it elsewhere. Once trashed, re-open ical. This should force it to rebuild its library based on those folders with weird names you saw. Your calendars should be back. Good luck

  • How to fix a bug(?) in iCal/Calendar/Reminders?

The iCal/Calendar (fox OS X 8)/Reminders (OS X 8) app has this very annoying bug It's quite minor but it's quite confusing sometimes. Whenever I try to add a new event, the window that appears that will let me set the date, time, etc. always has 2011 (xx/xx/11) for the year. For example, if I want to set the event for July 29, 2012 ("07/29/12"), it still shows "07/29/11". I've been having this problem ever since I was on the iCal app on OS X Lion but now that I've just upgraded to Mountain Lion, the problem's still there with the Calendar as well as the Reminders app.
Please refer to the screenshot I included. You can see that I chose July 29, 2012 as the date for the Sample Event. But the date that shows on the "from" field is still 07/29/11. I don't know I they intended it to be like this but it is very confusing.
PS: The same goes if I add an event before 2011. If I, for example, add an event on July 29, 2010, it still shows "07/29/11".

  • Why, when MobileMe was shuttered, does Apple NOT support calendar subscriptions for iCal (Calendar)?  I upgraded to Mountain Lion and cannot migrate my Dutch, U.K., Islamic, or Catholic holiday subscriptions.

Why, when MobileMe was shuttered, does Apple NOT support calendar subscriptions for iCal (Calendar)?
I upgraded to Mountain Lion and cannot migrate my Dutch, U.K., Islamic, or Catholic holiday subscriptions.  I had a heck of a time getting my Detroit Tigers Baseball team schedules migrated (but Major League Baseball supported the subscriptions, so it occurred).  As I work internationally, having these calendar subscriptions on the new Calendar would be very useful.
If one goes to the Apple site, and seeks calendars [http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/calendars/index1.html], they are shunted to MobileMe [https://www.icloud.com/mobileme/not_found/], with the note "MobileMe is closed. Go to iCloud."  But, I do not see how to get subscriptions from iCloud.
    Thanks.

The problem is that many of these calendars were hosted on MobileMe. I actually tried about 20 at random, and only two worked! Not all of the failures were ex-MobileMe, some were on other servers but produced 'File Not Found'.
Strangely, this one worked despite its URL:
    http://ical.mac.com/ical/UK32Holidays.ics
Until the people who publish these calendars (it's not Apple, they are third-party) wake up and find alternative servers these calendars are not available.
There may be other sources which work - try Googling.

  • ICal dead after update--access privileges/calendar cache error

    Hi all,
iCal began acting a bit buggy earlier today--it wouldn't let me add any new events or see the details in old ones, even after closing and re-opening the program. I just did a software update (including OS software) and now it won't work at all!
At first I got the following error message: "“Calendar Cache” could not be moved because you do not have appropriate access privileges for “Calendars” To view or change access privileges, select the item in Finder and choose File > Get Info.."
I searched the archives and found threads advising to delete the Calendar Cache file and the program would rebuild the Calendar Cache after restart. I did this, however the program still isn't working! (And right before the start of the work week, wouldn't you know!)
The error message I'm getting now is "The file could not be saved because you do not have appropriate access privileges. To view or change access privileges, select the item in Finder and choose File > Get info."
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I really need access to my calendar for tomorrow!
(As an aside, I feel like the past 3 or 4 times I have updated my OS it has resulted in some weird error or problem--once it crashed my whole OS! I'm a life long Mac user and apple shareholder, but I'm really starting to lose faith. Apple Gods, if you are listening, please make it so that software updates do not kill my computer or its programs! Is that too much to ask for?)

Sounds like something is definitely going on because mine did the same thing. Only now, I can't even open iCal anymore! I managed to export the files before it totally crashed so I at least have a copy of what was on there. I wish somebody would fix this so I can use my ical again! I was dependent on it for my daily work!
Now I keep getting error messages when I try to go back into the main program. The first error says: "the application iCal quit unexpectedly". When I click on Ropen it says Mac OSX and other applications are not affected. Click Try Again to tempo. restore the application's default settings and open it again." When I click on Report, I get the following details (it's long...):

  • ICal download for Jewish holidays will not populate iCal calendar but shows up on "Subscription" section of list of calendar

iCal download for Jewish holidays will not populate iCal calendar but shows up on "Subscription" section of list of calendars.  Help?

I am having the same issue, as is my husband and a friend.  We have both been subscribers to this calendar for several years and as of Jan 1 it no longer populates iCal.  I have subscribed to it again but, while it shows up in subscribed calendars it still does not populate.  I would appreciate some help.

  • Boooo: What happened to iCal calendar sharing in Leopard?

As much as a year out from the release of Leopard Apple was touting the iCal calendar sharing. WHAT HAPPENED?!
It was the only real reason I was excited about Leopard. Our whole family was looking forward to sharing one family calendar that everyone had rights to post to and everyone would be in sync.
Am I wrong, or is it vaporware?

At the moment, being detached from your subnet and using Mac OS X 10.5 or later is problematic. SyncTogether, for example, does not work with Leopard configurations.
There are other approaches you can take, including using Plaxo, or using Google calendars mated with SpanningSync to share calendar data. All of these have their relative strengths and weaknesses, or limitations. A requirement to be on the same subnet is the limitation of BusySync.

  • ICal Calendar Colors Changing On Their Own; iCloud Connection

    AGGRAVATING PROBLEM:
Many in this forum have written recently about a problem ongoing for people with multiple iCal calendars where iCal calendar colors change "automatically" when you haven't selected those colors, or even "change back" before your eyes to some color your DIDN'T select after you select a new one.  If you log into iCloud on the Web and try to change the color of certain calendars, they refuse to change.  Try as you might, the color you want for your calendar won't "stick" and it is forced to be the wrong color on all your devices.  In some cases, even the names of some of the calendars cannot be changed.  On other calendars in your list, the colors and names will change fine.
Related symptoms:  Calendars you have deleted "come back."   Or, calendars you did not create yourself show up in your calendars list, such as "Calendar" or "Home" or even "Untitled."  Note that the problem seems to be most prevalent with calendars with names "Home," "Work," OR either of these words in the NAME of the calendar.  For instance, "Bob's Work" might get snagged (it can't be deleted without coming back or its color is stuck and "comes back").
I spent a long time on the phone with a helpful Apple senior advanced specialist on this problem today.  We conducted a very large number of "experiments". Our family has two iPads, 2 iPhones, and 2 iMacs, so it was easy to rule things in or out.  I will present some information that may help.
SOME OF WHAT APPEARS TO BE GOING ON:
First, Apple has not resolved this.  But the problem appears to be related to iCloud, and NOT to individual devices.  After de-linking all of my individual devices from iCloud, I could change any of the colors or names at will on any given device, create new calendars and then change their colors to whatever I wish, delete calendars, change names...no problem.  However, after re-linking calendars to iCloud, all the problems mentioned above returned.  The chances that my iMacs, iPhones, and iPads are all causing the problem independently is very low. They also have slightly different OS versions on them, so it is not likely an a particular device OS, though that could be indirectly related.  Also, the colors "change back" within about the same time (usually a few seconds to up to 30 seconds) that it takes to do a "refresh" (i.e. an update) to the iCloud servers.  This when iCloud is turned on, and the absence of it when iCloud is turned off (for calendars), strongly suggests that it is the iCloud server and its interaction with your devices that the fundamental cause of the problem.
Apple has said that they are aware of this problem and their engineers are working on a fix.  Historically, this can mean just a few days, or it could be a few months, years, or "whenever."  They don't give estimates of when it will be fixed.  Exactly WHY this is happening is unclear, but my guess is that it is a modification to the iCloud server code that Apple implemented without testing it thoroughly enough to discover this problem.  Apple does not admit to that, of course and I don't know if I am correct.
A WORKAROUND SOLUTION THAT WORKED FOR ME:
Please note this is a workaround and not a full fix.  Apple needs to run a patch on their iCloud server code.  Until then, I did the following which seems to have worked for me for now.  Read the whole list before deciding whether to proceed.  I don't guarantee it will work in all situations.
Note...I found I was stuck for now with the color of ONE of my calendars.  If you are like me, you want to keep that one and work around it....
Backup first... Make sure that your iCloud copy of your calendar data has the calendar event information you want to save - even if the color is wrong.  Log in at www.icloud.com and do a refresh to sync to the Cloud.  Check over your calendars online to make sure the event data appears to be there for all of your calendars (even if their color or name is not what you want).
    Steps:
    1.     Go to every device that you have linked to iCloud separately. Go into Settings, iCloud, and then uncheck the "Calendars" option.  This delinks your calendars for that device to iCloud.  As you do this on each device, when prompted, select "Keep On My" ..iPAD...iPhone...iMac... etc.  This will preserve the calendar information on the device so it won't be deleted.  I think this is safer, but you can click on "Delete" if you want, too.  Note - if one of your devices is an iMac, with OSX Lion and before, you may be forced (I was) to delete the iCloud calendars from the iMac.  So again, make sure they are backed up to the Cloud first (or somewhere else).
    3.     With the iCloud Calendars Option on all your devices still turned off, go to the WEB and log into iCloud.com.  You need to figure our which calendar iCloud won't let you change the color for.  You probably already know.  On iCloud.com, click on "Calendars," then click open your calendar list and select "EDIT" at the bottom of the dialog box.  One at a time, click on the color dots next to each calendar name and try to change the color (you can put any back after the test if you want). You will probably see a certain one that just goes right back to what you don't want.  This is the one for which the color is stuck, but you may be able to change the name of it now that your devices are unlinked from iCloud.
    4.     Still in iCloud.com, change the names and colors of any of the other calendars you wish to change.  Delete any empty calendars that mysteriously appeared without your wanting them.  Take note of all the calendars, names, and colors that are on the final list of calendars.
    5.     On EVERY device, BEFORE turning iCloud back on on ANY of them: Change the colors and/or names of calendars, delete calendars, etc. so that the calendar names and colors on the device are exactly the same as what you left in iCloud.com in the last step.
    6.   One at a time on each device, go back to Settings and then "iCloud" and check again the box for "Calendars."  You will be asked whether you want to "MERGE" your data with iCloud.  I selected MERGE to ensure I didn't lose anything.  Link each device again into iCloud one at a time.
    7.  When each device is back, go back to iCloud on the Web, or go into iCAL on one of your devices.  Set to view ALL calendars.  Look for duplicates of some of your events.  I found quite several as an artifact of "merging", but in my case it only took me about 5 minutes to go through quickly and delete the duplicates.  It deleted the duplicates on all of the devices at once, so I only needed to delete dups on one device.  I did not find that I lost any events as long as I kept one valid copy.
Again, no guarantees...hope this works for others.  Good luck.

I'm getting the same thing and it's really bugging me! Keeps changing colour to one I do not want and I have tried everything to get it to stay the colour I have chosen!!

  • Changing the Color of a subscribed iCal calendar

Is there any way to change the color of an iCal calendar that I subscribe to?  The iCal subscription is from another Mac User (iCloud) who published the calendar using a color that I use for my calendar and I'd rather change hers (on my Mac) than change mine.
Doing a "get info" shows the color but it's 'grey'd out' so I can't change it.
    Thanks

I can't tell you why this is happening, but I can tell you that I admin many different iCloud users. Some subscribed calendars' colors can be changed in iCal, some are greyed out. It can't make any sense of it yet. However, If you want to change the colors of these calendars, you may do so by logging into your account in iCloud. Get to the calendars and hit EDIT. You will see colored dots next to each calendar. You can then change the color there. Log out and refresh in ical. The colors will (eventualy) be changed. Hope this helps.

  • Calendar cache could not be moved because...permission

after updates associated is iOS5 and icloud iCal won't open.  i get the message: Calendar cache could not be moved because you do not have permission to access calendars.  I checkd permission and my users wasn't there.  i added it, and no help.  I also repaired permissions from disk utility.  I quick search looks like this has been a common problem with most every new verion of 10.x..but the fixes are slightly different.  anyone have a fix for lion?

    Dave,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Have you ever tried to change the "Sharing & Permissions" setting of any files/folders on your Mac?
Where the heck do I find this mythical "Calendars" item?
Open your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Calendars Folder. Using "Get Info," what is the Sharing & Permissions setting for the Calendar Cache file in that folder?
What is the Sharing & Permissions setting for the Calendars Folder.
I've already tried re-installing iCal with my Snow Leopard install disc and it did no good.
Since you have reinstalled iCal you should also download and reinstall the Mac OS X v10.6.3 v1.1 Update (Combo)

  • An iCal calendar will not stay deleted.

I used to use Entourage but it kept duplicating all my appointments on all my devices so I got rid of it and just started using iCal and it seems to have corrected all the duplicate appointments.
But on my iMac there is still an Entourage calendar appearing in my list of calendars in iCal. There are no appointments in the Entourage calendar. It's listed under "on my mac" and I have deselected it and when I try to delete the Entourage calendar from my iMac iCal, it reappears instantly with a "Microsoft Error Reporting" message "Microsoft sync services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." AND the Entourage calendar reappears and is checked again!
My 2 iPhones and iPad have iCal set as the default calendar.
    Suggestions?

    Greetings,
Ensure you have turned off iCal syncing within the Entourage program. That is what adds the Entourage calendar to iCal in the first place. It is inside Entourage under Entourage > Preferences.
If that is already taken care of:
First make an iCal backup, File > Export > Archive.
Remove the following to the trash and restart your computer:
    Home > Library > Caches
Home > Library > Calendars > Calendar Cache, Cache, Cache 1, 2, 3, etc. (Do not remove Sync Cache or Theme Cache)
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.ical (There may be more than one of these. Remove them all.)
__NOTE: Removing these files will remove any shared (CalDAV) calendars you may have access to. You will have to re-add those calendars to iCal > Preferences > Accounts.
Once the computer is back up and running open iCal and test.
If the issue persists reset your sync history: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iSync/3.1/en/9247.html
    Hope that helps.

  • ICloud Calendar Timezone and Refresh

    Perhaps another iCloud bug here...
I travel a lot, and cross a lot of time zones.  It'd be nice if my iCloud calendar could keep up with me!
What I appear to have discovered, is that even though I change the timezone on my Mac (Sys Prefs Date/Time), and change the timezone in my iCloud preferences, the iCloud Calendar will not refresh itself to show the proper days or times....doesn't refresh if I hit the refresh-calendar button, either.
In order to get the event to properly refresh, I must first double-click the event, and then close the event.... A bit of a pain if there are a couple dozen events needing changing in each timezone...
iCal on the iPad and iPhone does not seem to have this problem.
    Thoughts?  Fixes?
I'm submitting feedback to Apple on this...
    Bob

    Update...
The refresh button on the calendar does not work...
However, after making a timezone change, if I refresh the calendar page by clicking "Reload Page" on Safari, the calendar then properly reloads with the proper timezone changes for the events on that calendar...
    Bob
