Leopard Install Freezes at 'About 30 minutes' screen...

Hello,
My wife's black MacBook was having some crazy issues I have never seen before. The finder was incredibly slow, the corners of every single window you opened were black (just the tips of the corners) and it would take around 3-5 minutes to open even a folder, then an additional minute to load any items within.
We decided to copy everything she might want to keep and do a fresh install from our Leopard DVD, however every single time it gets to where it says 'Time Remaining: About 30 minutes' and just freezes (it starts by saying the install will only take 31 minutes). The disc stop spinning and it will eventually put itself to sleep.
I can use all the menus to quit the install from the menu bar but no matter what I have tried, I can't seem to get past that 30 minute mark. I tried reformatting the hard drive and literally starting from nothing but that didn't work either.
Any help would be great.
Thanks.

Have you run the +Apple Hardware Test?+
If it's an Intel processor: [Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509].
Or if it's a PPC, the AHT's on one of the disc(s) that came with your Mac, and is tailored to it's particular hardware. The disk should have +Apple Hardware Test+ and instructions for running it printed in very tiny type.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

As the title says: Arch freezes after about 10 minutes with new kernel (2.6.27). I can only move a mouse, but everything else is frozen. Even restarting X doesn't do a trick. It doesn't work at all. Frozen.
I don't get any kind of error message (oh really?), so what's the problem..?

Yeah... I'm using nvidia... So the problem is nvidia drivers, not the Linux kernel?
Edit: My card is nVidia GeForce 8800 Ultra. I can't get driver information now, because I'm using WinXP right now. I'll check it later.
Did you make a new install or just updated?
You can try to reinstall old kernel with:
    pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/kernel(version you want).pkg.tar.gz
if you made a new install you may have to install the xorg keyboard driver and so.
By the way, there are a few diferent packages for nvidia drivers. Check wich is yours.
Also check /var/log/ folder for errors.
    Updated kernel.
And as I said, I'll check the driver later.

That's why this is happening, you're not using an app designed to run in the background. Look in the app store to see if NPR has a dedicated app. If so, & you use their app, it should run in the background. The only other way to stop this would be to set Auto-Lock to "Never". However, if you did that, you'll be measuring your battery life in minutes.

  • I am having problems viewing a TV episode. It freezes with about 10 minutes left and I can't click the button to move it to see if I can start it from a different point. Is there any way that I can fix this?

I bought the first season of Doctor Who. When I try to watch the episode, "The Unquiet Dead", it freezes with about 10 minutes left. I can not start it from any other point once it freezes. I was wondering if there is anyway to fix this.

You can try to clear the cache and cookies to see if that makes a difference:
    <h3>Clearing Cache</h3>
#Go to Firefox > History > Clear recent history or (if no Firefox button is shown) go to Tools > Clear recent history.
#Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
#Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
#From the details list, check ''Cache'' and uncheck everything else.
#Now click the ''Clear now'' button.
    <h3>Clearing Cookies</h3>
#Go to Firefox > Tools > Privacy > Remove Individual Cookies
#Find the site (ebay.com) that's having problems and clear all cookies.
    #Restart Firefox

  • Imac 2008 Snow Leopard installed, Wont go past the login screen

    Hello Everyone,
I am new to this so please bear with me.
I had been using my Imac lately just to run the sims 3 with extension packs which I played for about 10 minutes.
Today we had our internet connected as we have moved to a new house.
The Internet service provider has said the connection should be up and running today.
I went onto safari and checked two or three emails after that my mouse and keyboard could not do anything.
No force quit, No command based force quit, no relaunching of the finder, no being able to restart or shut it down at all.
I remember an echo back up mac thingy jumping up and down too in the dock if that helps
So I turned it off using the back button and left it off for 5 minutes. The mouse and Keyboard are wireless and run fine at the moment, no flat battery.
    First attempt
The screen turned on right up until the galaxy looking screen before te login box, the login box did not appear. There was no other way to turn it off other than from the back again.
    Second attempt
I had left it off for another 5 minutes and turned it back on again, The login screen has appeared, I can type in the password,
but this time when I pushed enter, the rainbow wheel appears and has stayed on there for the past half an hour.
    Third attempt
I will switch off the modem, leave the computer off for another 5 minutes and then try anf log back in. Since I will be disconnected to the internet I will update you with the progress and whether this has worked or not.
This begun to happen as soon as I entered the password for the internet connection. This macbook (late 2008 not pro) detected the connection from the imac (another computer is trying to access your internet connection-sort of thing) and I pressed ok on the macbook. The model of the modem router is D-Link Wireless N300 ADSL2 Modem router if that helps.
The mac desktop has had an install of snow leopard (so I can not do a restall/reinstall thingy of the current operating system) and all I can find at the moment is the original disks from the box. The mac was originally on 10.5.8.
Please help me to fnd a way in which I can get back into my computer this would be much appreciated.
I am not familliar with any technical terms so please keep it simple as I am a noob :3

    Third attempt
I will switch off the modem, leave the computer off for another 5 minutes and then try anf log back in. Since I will be disconnected to the internet I will update you with the progress and whether this has worked or not.
    Update:
This time I switched the computer off from the back as there seemed to be no progress made from the rainbow spinning wheel.
I left it for 5 minutes (the computer) switched off the jack and pulled the plug out.
I turned off the modem for 5 minutes.
I turned on the computer without turning on the modem and was able to log in.
I managed to get into the computer and am currently trying out safari to see if the same problem occurs.
5 minutes into hotmail, trade sites and you tube it seems to be going OK.
I guess the computer paicked abit from the new connection perhaps.

  • ITunes freezing after about 5 minutes on one account, works on other accounts

background info: I have a 2008 black Intel Macbook 2.4 GHz with 2GB RAM.
the problem that I'm having is when I run iTunes , after about 5 minutes even if I'm not downloading or playing music, the program starts to slow down and I get the rainbow beach ball on my screen. If I'm playing music, it starts and then stops, starts, and stops. Other programs respond for about a minute, and then nothing responds, no force quit, no nothing. The only way to get my computer back is to hard restart.
**I have a feeling that gapless playback has something to do with it, the problem started when I added an album collection of around 800 songs at once, and I did notice that it starts going through the gapless playback analysis or whatever and then freezes.
I've tried reinstalling iTunes etc. and searching forums and websites, but all problems that sound similar are from years ago and different iTunes versions. The iTunes is the version before 10.4, I'm not sure if its 10.3 or 10.2, since I'm afraid to open it and have my computer crash again.
One annoying fix I did was when I need to have music I made a separate account on my mac that runs iTunes fine with no problems. I had this problem in Snow Leopard, and just upgraded to Lion hoping it would fix itself, but it still has the same problem.
If anybody has help or has a similar problem please let me know.

Scanning from other than admin account has always been a problem for me. The only solution that I found out working is using the Vuescan software. It has something to do with that the scanning software trying to access some part of OS X that is locked to others but not for the owner (admin).
To give the other accounts admin access doesn't help.

  • Macbook on Snow Leopard Sleep freeze, slow boot time, blue screen, ... etc.

The macbook has the following problems:
    1. When closing the lid or pressing the power button the computer freezes, the fans start spinning fast it stays like that until it drains the battery. This happens every time.
    2. Start-up times are very long, like 3 or 4 minutes. This also happens every time.
    3. Now after a fresh snow leopard install it doesn't even start up completely, as it stays with the blue background and I can hear the music of the introductory animation.
The macbook worked ok with the factory installed Tiger. The SL DVD is OK, as its installation has been tested on another Mac. The machine's advanced hardware test passed successfully. Resetting Pram and similar actions were unsuccessful as solving the problem.
I don't know what else to do... please help.

So mine started doing some of the same things. It freezes when it goes into sleep mode. Then it starts to get really really hot and the drive starts spinning fast. It also takes a very long time to boot up. And it's unresponsive sometimes. I've wiped the drive and reinstalled a few times, but it's still like that. I don't know what's wrong.

  • After Replacing Hard Drive, iMac Freezes after about 40 Minutes.

I have a flat panel 15" iMac which had a bad hard drive. I replaced it with a 250 gig Seagate ATA drive. I used the Disck utility to format it and the computer recognized the correct size of the Drive. After installing OS 10.4.7 on the drive I found that the computer locks-up or frezzes after about 45 minute. I have run apple diagnoxtics and the computer hardware and ram checks out fine. I found that the computer does not lock up if I runit form an external firewire drive with os 10.x and it did not lock-up when I booted form the OS 9 Hardware test cd. I then thought that maybe I had loaded the OS x poorly on th e new drive so I reloaded the OS. The system agin freezes agter the system is on for about 30 + minutes.
Do I need a special drive or size for the G4 flat panel iMac? Is there a setting on the Segate Drive I need to set.
    Any Thoughts\
    Jim
    G4 Dual 1.25   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

    Hello,
There should be a Master / Slave setting on the drive. If it shares the same "channel" with your CD-ROM drive, then you may need to set the Hard Drive as Master.
Check your original drive, and see what it was set to. There is a Master, Slave, and Factory setting.
Look at the label on the drive, and compare that to the jumpers (little caps) on the back of the drive by the data cable connector.
Set your new drive to match the same setting your original drive was set to.
If that doesn't work, try your new drive in the external drive enclosure. See if it works right there.
If it still doesn't work right, then perhaps you got a drive with a defect.
If it works fine in the external case, and you have verified that your settings are right when used internally, then you may have damage in the iMac's logic board or hard drive controller somewhere.
But, take a look at the Jumper Settings, and try it in the external enclosure as well. See if either of those fixes it.
Hopefully you just got the jumper settings wrong.
    I hope this helps.

  • Leopard install freezes, now my imac G4 is unresponsive

I was installing Leopard on an imac G4 1.25 GHz with 2 Gb RAM and a new 500 Gb hard drive.
I installed the new hardware. Made sure everything was correct (e.g. torqued bottom mount screws where heatsink is attached and had new premium heat sink grease applied).
The imac chimed and started up like a champ. I hit the CD eject key and inserted the Leopard install DVD media. It then booted off the DVD. I chose English. I then at the drive selection prompt, selected Tools -> Drive Tool and partitioned the new 500 Gb drive with one 463 Gb partition in the default journel option. It created the partition fine.
I then chose that hard drive/partition for the OS install. It started installing and ran for over 30 minutes until the blue progress bar was all the way across the screen. I was eating dinner and don't really know exactly when it finished. However, I went to check it and the screen was frozen with that image. There was no mouse movement when I moved the mouse and the keyboard had no effect.
I pondered what to do but decided to hold the power button and recycle it.
That was the last time the screen lit up and it has done anything. My Leopard DVD is still in the drive which will NOT eject. I've tried using 'Target' drive mode but it doesn't show up on my Powerbook G4.
I've tried resetting the PMU (bottom of the case inside cover).
Ive tried ctrl-option-P-R to reset the PVRAM.
I've tried power on with the 'C' key depressed to force it to boot from the DVD. Nothing.
I've connected the external display and nothing appears.
There was one hint of hope when after the PMU reset, it powered on, chime, screen lit up and then in the middle of the boot, cryptic console log type appeared on the top left corner of the screen with a CPU panic/failure and a code=000004 with something like nosaveareas.
That's the last thing it has done.
I suspected maybe a bad memory stick so I reinstalled the 768 Mb of RAM which were in it. Still no response but a chime does sound with both the new and old memory.
All this time, the chime sounds on boot, the DVD spins up but nothing from the display no matter how long I leave it.
    Ideas?

    Ref the target mode:
To use FireWire target disk mode, see the last paragraph...might be worth a shot:
    1. Make sure that the target computer is turned off. If you are using a PowerBook or iBook as the target computer, you should also plug in its AC power adapter.
    2. Use a FireWire cable (6-pin to 6-pin) to connect the target computer to a host computer. The host computer does not need to be turned off.
    3. Start up the target computer and immediately press and hold down the T key until the FireWire icon appears. The hard disk of the target computer should become available to the host computer and will likely appear on desktop. (If the target computer is running Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, you can also open System Preferences, choose Startup Disk, and click Target Disk Mode. Then restart the computer and it will start up in Target Disk Mode.)
    4. When you are finished copying files, drag the target computer's hard disk icon to the Trash or select Put Away from the File menu (Mac OS 9) or Eject from the File menu (Mac OS X).
    5. Press the target computer's power button to turn it off.
    6. Unplug the FireWire cable.
+If the target computer's hard disk does not become available to the host computer, check the cable connections and restart the host computer.+
and at this link are 12 ways of ejecting a disk...pay attention to the OPEN FIRMWARE solution...might work (During startup, press and hold the Command-Option-O-F key combination to enter Open Firmware, type "eject cd" in lower case letters, then hit return.):
