Leopard Install on iBook G4 stuck in a "loop."

I just bought a 5-pack of Leopard. I installed it on my MacBook, and am trying to install it on my iBook G4. The G4 is a 1GHz maching, but I didn't read the RAM requirements, and it doesn't have enough RAM. The Installer said that I didn't have enough RAM, and that I needed to restart the computer. I hit OK and restarted. Now, the "Use English for the Main Language screen is coming up. I hit the "forward" button, and it goes through the same process again. It seems to be caught in some kind of loop. Any ideas?

Hi
Restart the iBook again and hold down the clicker on the trackpad. It should eject the installer disk. Failing that restart and hold down the option key (alt), its the one between the ctrl key and apple key immediately to the left of your space bar. This gets you to startup disk manager. You should be able to select your internal drive (if it still has a valid system on it) as the boot drive. Click the right hand arrow and it should now boot normally. Once you've logged in eject the disk.

  • My Leopard install DVD is getting caught in a loop

I'm having a problem with my Leopard install DVD. I'm running Leopard 10.5.7, and I wanted to use Disk Utility, so I inserted the intall DVD, double clicked the icon, and pressed enter to restart using the disk.
What happened next was the computer restarted, gave me the chime, went to a gray screen with no apple logo or spinning gear, then restarted and looped this same sequence repeatedly. I've checked the surface of the install DVD and it seems undamaged, so my only conclusion is that something software related is happening. Anyone else run into this?
The install DVD is version 10.5.1.

Okay, so I used Disk Utility on the internal drive to verify and then repair permissions (long list). Then I attempted to verify the disk and got a message saying Disk First Aid Failed and the following info in the history: Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Performing live verification.
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
    Invalid volume file count
(It should be 956726 instead of 956732)
    Invalid volume directory count
(It should be 233009 instead of 233003)
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
After that, I put the install disk in and restarted holding the shift key. Got the gray screen for a long time (DVD seemed to be doing something), and then the computer restarted. This time I held down the option key, got the Startup Manager and selected the install disk. And away we went with the gray screen loop again. I let it try to restart from the install disk 6 times before holding down the eject button and ejecting the install disk which allowed the 'puter to boot from from the internal drive.
    And that's where I stand.

  • Basic Snow Leopard install with special customization:  setup assistant infinite loop problem.

    Hi, all,
Based on this post: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1395118?start=0&tstart=0, I'm assuming there's a problem with setup assistant running after a customization install reboot.  But I could be wrong.
    Here are the details:
    MacBook Pro
Clean OS X Snow Leopard install (I was "told" by IT I had to wipe the disk and re-install OS X after backing up personal files).
Installed extras I need/want (in particular, XCode, though I went ahead with the other optional software as well).
Installed the IT supplied "Supplemental CompanyName Installation Disc" (also referred to as "CompanyName Supplemental Installation Disc" ), which is supposed to create a customized, IT supported, setup.
When the supplemental install is done, the system is rebooted.
There is then a "Welcome" screen (starscape, with almost endless bombardment of the word welcome in various languages), finally followed by:
    a) select language; b) select keyboard; c) select timezone; d) Don't forget to register your Mac, with a "done" button.
Clicking the "done" button goes to a blank grey screen. and then loops back to redo the "Welcome/language/keyboard/done" sequence, ad nauseum (that is, infinitely repeated).
Per the above mentioned post, I have rebooted to the Install DVD and run disk utility, repairing permissions.  No difference on reboot.
Boot to safe mode goes to the same setup assistant sequence, not a login screen.
Another Mac user here suggested checking for /var/db/.applesetupdone, since missing it, or if it's correupt, could cause this problem.
So I booted to single user and checked for this file.  It is not there.  On the off chance the file is a simple flag and the content doesn't matter,
I did fsck/remount and touch /var/db/.applesetupdone but this did not change anything either.
Presumably, the file must be present and must contain some data.  If this is true, can it be created manually and put in place via single user mode?
Or are there other, better solutions someone could suggest?
    Many thanks.
    Bob

Ah, it seems I finally found something useful, at http://hintsforums.macworld.com/showthread.php?t=84825
One of the responders supplied the content of their .applesetupdone file.
I was able to get this onto my Mac, in /var/db, as .applesetupdone (just to be safe, I linked that name to .AppleSetupDone, the name as mentioned on the above site).  Note that both names begin with a dot (hidden, in UNIX parlance).
On reboot I was presented with the CompanyName specific login screen.  It took a little bit more mucking around with passwords, but I was eventually able to login without any problem.

  • No finder menu after Leopard install on iBook G4

Has anyone seen a problem like this? Installed Leopard as an upgrade on an iBook G4 900 Mghz with 640 Mb RAM and ample hard drive space. Startup was faulty and slow. Now starts up and will show dock but no Finder Menu at the top and I get the spinning wheel. I can select programs from the dock, but the menu panel at the top does not show time/date, airport status, or anything other than that programs menu options. Then will not shut down from Finder.

Delete the com.apple.finder.plist located in Home/Library/Preferences and restart. If that doesn't fix the problem and, unless you have a bootable backup/clone of your Tiger installation, your only option is to do an Archive & Install installation, as it appears that your installation is hosed.

  • Leopard install on ibook lost hard drive

I tried to install leopard on my macbook and installation completed. the system restarted and the installer came back. My hard drive is no longer recognized and I cannot get the install disk out.
Any ideas on how to get my hard drive back?

    Hello Dave:
To get the disk out, restart your computer while holding the mouse click down.
You indicate that the installation completed - that should not happen.
Assuming you were able to eject the disk, I would boot from the install disk and run repair disk (not permissions).

  • Tried to install Windows and am stuck in a loop...

    Hello all.
Title pretty much sums up my issue. I have a copy of Windows XP Home Edition that I had used on my dell, and wanted to use it via Boot Camp on my Mac Pro (15' 2009). I began the bootcamp setup, partitioned my hadrdrive, and began the Windows setup. I put the disk in and it said "Setup could not read the CD you inserted, or the CD is not a valid Windows CD." Now the CD is stuck in my drive and every time I reboot, Windows setup stats over.
So, I need help getting this CD out or exiting the Windows Setup.
    Thank you for any help.

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
    2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
    3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
    4. Press COMMAND-E.
    5. If none of the above work try this:
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
    /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into single-user mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
You cannot install Windows using a Dell specific installer disc. You need a retail copy of Windows.

  • Satellite L500-19X: Win7 install won't work - stuck on syswow64 loop?

I've tried to reinstall Windows 7 on Satellite L500-19x but it won't complete - every time I boot up laptop a white splash screen appears saying "preparing to install...may take a few minutes" but this never disappears...can get out of this screen by starting task manager and hitting escape a few times.
When get as far as desktop things seem to be in order except for command prompt running Syswow64/sysprep/...access is denied on continuous loop, also there is a window saying "TUPIT 2" which seems to have failed as there is a "requested registry access is not allowed" in front of it.
Would really appreciate if somebody could tell me how to fix this as it is extremely frustrating and seems to be so close yet so far to being successfully completed!

    Hi
This message is very strange. Had read in internet about similar issues but the issues were always related to the registry problems.
In most cases the error message appeared trying to repair the Windows OS.
Did you try to make a clean installation?
I think you should format the HDD firstly before trying to install the Win 7.
Hopefully everything would be erased from HDD before starting the setup installation

  • Why won't OS X Leopard install on my iBook G4

    What I did:
I was trying to install Leopard on my iBook G4, and it said as one of the trouble shooting steps that I should erase my disk (Macintosh HD) so I did, and it still didn't work, so now I am stuck with a empty hard drive. is there any way I can force Leopard to install?

There were several 12" G4 iBooks. Only the first was an 800MHz model.
To check the CPU speed of your iBook, you can enter your serial number here:
    http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html
The serial number is printed on the underside of the iBook or perhaps inside the machine under the battery.

  • Should I install Leopard on my iBook G4?

I have read some of other people's experiences in these Apple discussions but want pose the question again with the specs of my own computer. I have an iBook G4, purchased in early 2005, running 10.4.11, with a 1.33 GHz processor and 1.25 GB of RAM (I just upgraded from 768 MB of RAM). I am liking Leopard on my new iMac and would like to upgrade to Leopard on the iBook, especially since I could then use Time Machine to back it up easily to an external hard drive. Should I take this step? How much free space on my 80 GB hard drive should I have in order to make this move? (I now have only 11.75 GB, which I know is not enough, as Leopard takes 9 GB, but I use the iBook for work and could conceivably take off some personal items such as music and photos. By the way, I purchased the iBook myself for work, so I am not breaking any work rules to have personal stuff on the computer.)

Thanks to all of you who gave me the confidence to install Leopard on my iBook G4. I did it very methodically. First, I purchased 1GB of RAM, which, when installed, gave me the maximum of 1.25GB of RAM. Then I pared down my music and photo libraries so that I had a much bigger chunk of free space on the 80GB hard drive. Then I installed Leopard. First I waited for the DVD to be verified (a longish process), but then the installation went very smoothly. All in all, it took under 2 hours. I realize I won't have some of the graphic animations in Dashboard, but I think the advantage of having Time Machine will outweigh that. Thanks again, folks, for your advice.

  • I used utilities to source my 10.6 snow leopard install disc to my main hardrive, and now when I turn on my computer the apple with the spinning wheel stays on the screen and stuck like that. How do I fix it Help please. I already tried all the commands

I used utilities to source my 10.6 snow leopard install disc to my main hardrive, and now when I turn on my computer the apple with the spinning wheel stays on the screen and stuck like that. How do I fix it Help please. I already tried all the commands such as Command R, Holding down the Option key, C and holding down shift at the start up but nothing happens.
initialy All I was trying to do was downgrade 10.7 to 10.6 .

You have to consider the possibility the hard drive may be dying.    If your data isn't backed up, try one of the tools below:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1689
Once you are sure your data is backed up, we can examine other possibilities.  In the meantime call AppleCare for your original installation DVDs.  You may need them.

  • Installing Leopard on an iBook with a CD-ROM only

How can I install Leopard on my iBook that only has a CD-ROM? Can I request Leopard on CDs, or can I use an external USB DVD-ROM drive?

    James Orlowski wrote:

Can I request Leopard on CDs,
    no.
or can I use an external USB DVD-ROM drive?
you can if your ibook is intel. if it's PPC then you need a firewire DVD drive not USB. also, if you have another Mac, you can boot your in target mode, connect it to the second computer and install leopard from there. The second mac has to have the same architecture as yours (both intel or both PPC).

  • Question about installing leopard on my iBook G4?

I purchased an iBook G4 in very good condition. It came with leopard already installed on it but the seller didn't include any discs with the iBook. Therefore I purchased a family pack (Retail Version) of Leopard off the of ebay for $60. I only have 1 Apple computer but I bidded and luckily won this Leopard Family pack.
Anyways, my question is if anything goes wrong with ibook and have to reinstall the Operating System, will the Family pack of leopard work?
Also will I have to reinstall all the other programs that are already on the computer as well; MS Office 08, iLife 08 etc. ?

Yes. You can legally have Leopard installed on up to any five computers at a time.
will I have to reinstall all the other programs that are already on the computer as well; MS Office 08, iLife 08 etc. ?
Yes, you will. Some iLife apps are included on a Full Retail Version installer, although it is usually earlier versions of those apps. The full suite of iLife apps comes only on the original disk shipped with the computer, or by purchasing iLife separately. There is not a computer specific version of Leopard for the iBook G4, so iLife would have had to be purchased separately. While a new computer wwould have to be purchased separately.
I recommend that you purchase an external firewire HDD and clone/backup your entire computer to it. If you use a utility like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner you can make a bootable copy of your HDD, which you can update regularly. For more information on external HDDs and cloning please post back and ask.
    cornelius
Thanks for replying to my post. Yeah I did purchase a 250GB (Firewire) external hard drive, downloaded Carbon Copy and saved my entire internal hard drive to it. So since I made a copy of my hard drive, do I still need this Retail Copy Leopard Disc?

Does your computer meet the requirements for Leopard?
    System requirements
You must have a Macintosh computer with:
an Intel processor or a PowerPC G4 (867 MHz or faster) or G5 processor
    a DVD drive
    built-in FireWire
at least 512 MB of RAM (additional RAM is recommended for development purposes)
a built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
at least 9 GB of disk space available, or 12 GB of disk space if you install the developer tools
