Leopard installation problems (from tiger 10.4.11)

I've been on Tiger but today I've updated to leopard using the update disc (ie not the $129/£85 version of leopard but the $9.95/£5.95 update disc)
Installation went fine but Im pretty sure I forgot to restart my mac after it.
Anyways I carried on with the update to 10.5.1. from the apple site (which I downloaded through safari browser. That went fine too, then I restarted my mac.
I started exploring leopard and now I need help!
firstly, Safari just wont open. It says safari wont work with this version of mac os x, therefore Im typing this through camino.
Secondly, photo booth is the same as in tiger, no new updates etc but now the effects screen has just gone weird; (see pic) (the camera is taking a pic of a white background by the way)
I admit I did change some locations of apps in the apps folder for example, when I was on tiger, i created a subfolder in the apps folder entitled 'Web browsers', and put safari, camino, firefox into. Did a similar thing to photo booth app too.
But then I read on a forum that when upgrading OS's apps should be in the 'default' location before upgrading. So I moved all these apps back to the apps folder, but this hasnt changed anything.
Also, when viewing folders in icon mode, at a large icon size, the icons all overlap until i go to view in the menu bar, select arrange by name, then its all evened out, but I wish it'd just work properly!
Also not a big deal but I though that when viewing in icon mode that you should be able to see a little screenshot preview of the item/document instead of an icon (eg. instead of a blank pages for a pages document, should you not see a mini preview of the fist page of the actual document as the icon?)
Im sure there is other things too that aren't as they ought to be.
So I ask, how do i fix this mess? I cant uninstall leopard i dont think, and i dont have an external hard drive to backup to.
Any suggestions please?
Regards, Ben.

I'm just going by instinct here, but after you move the apps back where they belong, try reinstalling the 10.5.1 update again. Maybe it will "straighten" things out.
Yes, one should never move system folders or apps to other folders. That's a real NONO. You can usually move 3rd party apps around, but the OS-X looks for certain apps in certain places. Safari is more than just an app - it's tightly integrated into the OS, and there are also many apps that attach to it such as realtime, etc., that may not be able to find it if you play hide-and-seek with it.
So restore all the system apps to their original locations and see if a reinstall of 10.5.1 will help.
Use the 110MB download on the Apple website.

how can I create a disk image of snow leopard installer disk from my Imac which runs it? It came without DVD installer, and I want to make a copy of it's OS installer but can't find out how.

You need to have the disc in order to create disk image of snow leopard installer disc. What did your machine ship with? If something later than SL, then why? If earlier, then you can buy the SL installer disc and make the disk image.

What can I do if the Snow Leopard installation isn't completed, returning message " Installer couldn't replace system documents"?
I tried once, and system returned me the message above. So I restarted and tried installation again, but first I formatted the HD with the Mac os x Journaled file system. the I retried, but the installation didn't go to an end, returning the same message.
I'm stucked with a 2009 Macbook Pro. Before I tried installation, suddenly stopped working, booting it with no success, ending with a white wide screen.
Any ideas?
Many Thanks.

Oh, it was the +File Open+ dialog, not a web browser window, is that correct?
Since you installed Snow Leopard as an upgrade over your existing system, and logged in to your existing user account, you may have had a +Login Item+ (processes that start and run at login) that needs to use "Events.app" (or maybe Events.app itself was the Login Item).
If you log out and log in, that message should pop up again, if it is related to a Login Item.
To see your Login Items, go to System Preferences Accounts pane +Login Items+ tab. The list you see are your Login Items. If you see anything that you no longer need, you should remove it. Look for something that may be related to this "Events.app" process.

• Leopard Installation Problem on PPC G5

Hi there....any help on this one appreciated.
I have a Dual 2Gig PPC G5 with 4.5 gigs RAM that was running (and still is) running 10.4.11 fine. Attempting to upgrade to Leopard from a proper retail Leopard install.
Symptom: Either booting with c key down or running the upgrade from the OS results in a message saying "the installation could not be completed - if it continues to occur, the boot log may help you to diagnose the problem" - there are buttons to save and print the boot log and to shut down and restart...BUT the computer shuts itself down before I have a chance to act on any of this. Behind it I see an open boot log with a bunch of the word "crash" on it!!!!!
Things I have tried:
Resetting PRAM
Removed third party PCIe cards
Removed third party RAM
I've repaired permissions on the startup disk
I am fully backed up
I've tried it from a different user account.
I've disabled login items
What more can I do aside from a complete clean install of 10.4 which may help? Trouble is I dont want to do that as it would take a day to get all my third party stuff re-installed.
Any thoughts and help much appreciated
cheers
Tony

Thanks MacJack,
but...I didnt attempt this before as I dont think it works...
from that doc you linked to:
"Tip: FireWire Target Disk Mode works on internal ATA drives only. Target Disk Mode only connects to the master ATA drive on the Ultra ATA bus. It will not connect to Slave ATA, ATAPI or SCSI drives."
So, as far as I understand it, if I booted up my macbook pro, say, with the Leopard install disk in it in Target Disk Mode - the g5 would only see the Macbook Pro's internal ATA as opposed to both that and the DVD or am I missing something? Sorry, not at that machine at the moment so I can't try it!

• Mac Mini core solo 1.5gb snow leopard installation problem.

Before I tried to install snow leopard I was in the middle of using the restore discs and before I was thinking about it I just turned the computer off when it asked for disc 2. Now I cannot do anything with this computer, turning it on goes to the installation menu and It just prompts for the second disc which I do not have. All my menus are disabled such as disc utility and can't start a fresh install. Also when I turn the computer on and hold the alt key down with a usb keyboard I do not get the option of selecting the snow leopard disc when the option of the hard drives come up. It just ejects the discs. Also tried holding down the C key to boot from dvd and no luck. Any way to get around this or another command to try?

Sounds like your optical drive went out. Either get it fixed or use an external USB CD/DVD drive. You might try another disc first to eliminate a problem on your install disc. Sometimes scratches and finger prints on a disc can cause problems.

• My Leopard installation problems solved

My Preparations
I had received an update for the 1.1 firmware update (OSx 10.4.10), but it would not install. It turned out, the disk was not a "GUID" partition. I backed up the disk after having problems with 2 files it said it could not find. Finally found these were some mirror files under /users/art/Library/Mirrors (the backup had stopped on the Mirrors directory). Had no idea what they were or where they came from, but copied them to another drive and then deleted them. After that, the backup worked. The internal drive was a Hitachi 100 GB, 7200 RPM that replace the original 80 GB drive. I had done a Carbon Copy clone, but guess it was not exactly a clone.
I repartitioned the drive as GUID HPFS+ and done a clean install of 10.4.8 and also done a migration from the backup, then done an update to 10.4.10 where the firmware update worked. So I had the fully updated internal 10.4.10 and a bootable USB 80 GB drive.
The Leopard Install
I selected the install/archive option, and Leopard installed with no problems including migrating the applications from the previous install. I did not have the applications enhancement which I do not even know what is. I then let Leopard do an update where it updated the Quicktime and another program whose name slips my mind right now. It said it had to reboot and did where it installed the programs, but then when the reboot started, it come up with the rotating beach ball at the login screen and would just keep rebooting. Tried everything that was mentioned the discussion group but nothing worked. I ended up using the Disk Utility to erase with write zeros, then a clean install. Everything went fine, update went fine, and it was much faster than before by 4 or 5 times. Went and got my applications from the backup and updated those with updates for Leopard including Parallels, Vuescan, Skype, Firefox, Thunderbird, NeoOffice, and a few others. System is now working fine and is much faster the 10.4.10. Oh, I did have to update my DIR655 wireless router for the wireless also.
(Macbook was purchased here in Taiwan where it is made with Chinese Leopard US English installation)
The one word of advice I would give to anyone, make a bootable backup of your operating system. I am glad I did, it saved my bacon.

I can only say, "Well done."
Good sleuthing, excellent prep and not really a problem after all.

• Is there any online Leopard/Snow leopard/Lion upgrade from tiger?

Just had to restore my iMac to factory settings but realised the Leopard disc that came with it are not for my machine.
Looking for a way to update it as I dont have the discs and dont mind paying to upgrade.

Leopard/10.5 is rather expensive, so if your Mac meets 10.6 requirements that'd be the way to go...
Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
minimum system requirements
        * 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
Classic/OS9 Apps no longer supported.
Trouble is Apple no longer sells it, check eBay & such for the Retail version, not the Gray Discs...

First you need to research all the problems people are having with the higher OSX versions, & make sure you have a bootable clone of what you have just in case.
then you must get 10.6 if they still have it, install it & update to 10.6.8 so you have the App Store to buy & download the huge 10.8 Installer.
Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.

• Installation problem - from CS4 to Creative Cloud CS6

Re: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4403515#4403515
THE TWO PROBLEMS
(1) I am a licensed CS4 user who has recently upgraded to Creative Cloud CS6 (that's not a problem, that's just background). The problem is when I attempt to open files through Bridge, Windows Explorer, and even Dreamweaver by Right-Clicking, I get the option to open the file in two applications of the same name. The pop-up menu does not indicate which version is which (CS4 or CS6).
(2) I do not know if deactivating and uninstalling CS4 while CS6 is installed and activated will create any problems.
DESCRIPTION
The screen shot below illustrates the problem. In Dreamweaver CS6, I have right-clicked on a .png to open it in Fireworks. I want to open it in FW CS6, but the versions are not identified.
INSTALLATION STEPS FOLLOWED:
Once my Adobe Creative Cloud membership was active, I performed the following actions:
Opened Photoshop CS4. Selected HELP > DEACTIVATE.
Opened InCopy CS4. Selected HELP > DEACTIVATE.
Opened and signed in to Adobe Application Manager.
Installed CS6 goodies.
INSTALLATION NOTES:
My intent was to deactivate the existing CS4 install, install CS6, activate CS6, and then uninstall CS4.
CS4 was activated by the CS6 install.
I have enough space to keep CS4 without any complications, but I would like to uninstall it.
QUESTIONS
(1) If and when two programs of the same name but different versions appear in my Right-Click Pop-Up menu, how do I determine which is which?
(2) What are the steps to safely deactivate and uninstall CS4 without adverse effects on my CS6 install?
Thanks,
Buck
p.s. I absolutely LOVE CS6!!!

File associations in Bridge are handled by the Bridge prefs and in turn build upon your sysrtem's defaulrt fiel associations where appropriate. Therefore you have to tackle that the old-fashioned way - by editing teh prefs and Windows Explorer file types. The rest sounds like you are confusing a few things here - CS6 does not at all have anything to do with CS4. Sounds more like you simply do not erase the CS4 serial from your system when deactivating and it quietly re-activates the apps when you go in and attempt to verify.

• Time Machine and Snow Leopard installation problem

I'm trying to install Snow Leopard, but keep getting an error saying that my hard drive is used for time machin back ups. I have unplugged my external device, turned off time machine, yet this keeps happening. What am I doing wrong? I have been able to install Leopard on the computers that I haven't used time machine.

BusyChris18 wrote:
1) Do I have to do anything special with Time Machine BEFORE I install SL? I have been doing regular backups with TM.
Do a "final" backup and turn TM off.
2) should Time machine disc be off/disconnected when I do the install?
It's safest to eject and disconnect it, "just in case."
3) After I reconnect TM disc after SL install, do I have to "migrate" stuff from TM? OR will it just do a new backup and work like normal from that point forward.
If you do the normal install, there's no migration needed. 99.9 % of everything will be fine. In some rare cases of 3rd-party apps putting things in unusual places, there may be a problem, and you may need to re-enter some 3rd-party app purchase codes.
If you erase the drive, then install SL, then yes, of course, you'll have to transfer your data. There should be no reason to do that, but some folks seem to do it out of habit. If you do that, when your Mac boots up again, you can transfer your data from the TM backups. And if you do that, I'd strongly recommend making a separate full backup on a second external drive, again "just in case," preferably a "bootable clone." CarbonCopyCloner and SuperDuper are the most common. (There was a post here just last week where someone did this, the restore got to 99%, then BAM! the TM disk failed.)
TM backups should just continue normally, although there will almost certainly be a long "Calculating Changes" phase (used to be called "Preparing"). And they've added a progress bar, which doesn't seem to be particularly accurate.
However, it may try a new, full backup. If it does, cancel the backup and do a Restart. That may reset whatever confused it. If not, there's nothing you can do to prevent it.
4) Will I be able to access files that were backuped when I have just Leopard?
Yes.

• Need advice on leopard installation problems!

Over the summer I stopped in at the Apple store and was told that my Imac (which has the Jaguar operating system) would have no problems installing the Leopard OS. Well i finally bought Leopard and tried installing it last night and my computer is wrecked! I don't even know if I have an operating system anymore. grrrr.
After almost 3 hours of waiting (my screen said "preparing for installation" the whole time...my computer froze up me. Finally a message popped up and said that the leopard OS "cannot be installed on this computer". It gave me the option of exiting installation. Once i selected the exit option, NOTHING happened. My computer did nothing. The icon kept swirling around and around and around. I tried force quitting and that did nothing.
So now ive got this leopard disc stuck in my computer's disc drive and i have no way to get it out. it was such a waste of money for this. I feel completely misinformed by the Apple employee.
Does anyone know what is going on with this? How can I get the disk out?

Welcome to the Apple forums.
Sadly I wish you had posted here before installing Leopard, but we do not dwell in the past here.
You did not say which of the three types of install you did: Default (merge), Archive or Erase and install.
You most likely still have your original OS intact and I assume you did not create a backup of the system before installing. Nothing is perfect and having a copy of your system before changing it is normal, even if you are simply upgrading your original OS. In today's world, a backup is a necessity, not an option.
Can you perform a Safe boot? Hold down the shift key after the boot bell.
Can you boot into the original CD by holding down the "C" key whilst booting?
I do not think you have lost anything, but we must be careful in proceeding forward.
If you can create a copy of your existing HD, that would be great for a start.
Try the Safe boot and post back. We are here to help. This is a user-to-user forum and we take everything seriously and do our best to fix things up.

• Snow Leopard Installation Problems with Bridge

I just installed Snow Leopard, after having the CS4 Suite with Bridge CS4 previously installed. When I tried to open Bridge after the insallatin of Snow Leopard, I got four error messages in succession, one right after the other when hitting "ok":
1. PiPL Endian Swap Error
Please Update PALoadMacPlugins.ccp with prop.
Unable to Swap PiPLprop 'ms32"   øms325 §'

Unable to Swap PiPLprop 'ms32"   øms325 §'
4. PiPL Endian Swap Error
Please Update PALoadMacPlugins.ccp with prop.
After that, the program opens normally. I re-installed Bridge CS2, which works, but when I tried to use the update for Bridge CS4, it wouldn't allow me to put it in. On the installation disc for CS4, the place to select Bridge for installation was grayed out.

I didn't get any fix advice.
When I reinstalled CS4 I didn't install the any of the bonus packs/updates and haven't had the problem.
I also had (for other reasons) to do a complete reinstall of my system software, which may be why it's fixed.  I'm afraid to install the bonus pack and find out, in any case.

• Installation Problems: OSX Tiger

Hi all,
I have a G4 iMac, I had 10.3.9 Panther on there, and I was starting to have some issues with space and computer running slow, and just recently my Quicktime7Pro just stopped working all together. SO... I got myself a 250GB LaCie Disk external HD and OSX Tiger.
I took all my files and made backups of them on the external hd, then I ejected it, turned its power off and unplugged it and everything else that was unecessary. I then put in my OSX Tiger Install DVD. It's brand new, I just bought it yesterday!!! (2/28/07 @ 10am) I put it in and the system loaded. It said it was finished and it was going to restart. The computer shut down, and restarted and came to the loading screen, the bar went 100% filled and then it came to a blue screen.
THIS IS WHERE I'M HAVING PROBLEMS!!! The top right corner will have the mouse cursor fade in, the "umbrella" will spin, then back to mouse, and fade out. Then it will change to a more of a greener/lighter blue and will have the lines "sun ray" loader. Then back to the normal blue (more cyan) and the cursor will fade in, umbrella, fade out etc. Over and over again. It won't go anywhere. I read the OSX Tiger booklet. I put the DVD back in (YES! it is retail!). I held C down. Waited. I chose the startup disk I wanted, and the computer froze. I had to shut it down and reboot. I followed the same steps, except this time it worked, but took me back to this mysterious blue>lightblue>blue>lightblue screen of death! I just wanted to start with a fresh HD on my iMac with Tiger, and now I can't even use my computer.
I read this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=818804
And s/he had similar problems. I just could really use some guidance here. I don't know how I'm ever going to be able to use my computer again, and I really don't have the $ to take it to a shop and get charged $200 for someone to install software that I could've done with a little bit of help.
All help is definately welcome, and more than appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• Leopard installation problems (DVD ejecting)

Two weeks ago I decided not to buy a new Mac but to upgrade my current one. So I've added memory, an extra screen (in an old iMac housing) en an extra HDD. I also wanted to upgrade to OSX 10.5 and iLife '09. To upgrade all the Macs I ordered a family pack with OSX 10.5, iLife '09 and iWork '09.
When I try to install Leopard my DVD is ejected and than I get a grey screen with a folder with the finder symbol and a folder with a questionmark:

Does someone know how to solve this?

What it can hold & what it recognizes are two different things, which is why I asked what System Profiler says about the installed memory.
From your Photo Bucket shot, it is obvious that you have used a hack to run the second monitor in the unsupported non-mirror mode. This may or may not have something to do with your problem, as the hack modifies things that remain in place even when the second monitor is not connected. It is a long shot, but you might try turning off the hacked non-mirror support, resetting PRAM, & trying again.
