Leopard installed on a power pc

I have a PowerPC G5 with Leopard installed.
I have Adobe CS3 installed.
CS3 keeps crashing whenever I open an Indesign CS doc which was converted to CS3.

Since this would most likely be an Adobe issue, you should probably post your question on the Adobe forums: http://www.adobeforums.com

  • Power outage during last minute of Leopard install

During the last few minutes of my Leopard install into my new alum iMac (I was setting up the mac for the first time), my UPS started to squeal and then shut down and I lost power.
Now when I turn on the iMac I get the message "The application Spotlight unexpectedly quit." I can't access the Finder and have no idea how to go through re-installing the OS. Inserting the Leopard CD does nothing.
It looks like components of Leopard were installed because the desktop backgroup changed to the "galaxy".
Can someone help me through this?
    Thanks, Sandy

    Hi Sandy
Insert the Leopard DVD, restart the computer and keep the C key held down until you see the grey screen and Apple logo. It should then boot into the installation and let you go through the process again. You'll probably want to choose "Archive and Install" from the Options button when you get to the screen where you choose a drive.
Unfortunately, I don't think there's a graceful way to shut down the computer in a power failure if it's in the middle of installing system components...

  • Is it possible to make a copy of the Leopard install DVD?

Is it possible to make a copy of the Leopard install DVD? If so, is there a special way this has to be done? I just found out that we needed to use the Leopard install DVD to recover a complete backup from Time Machine after a recent hard drive failure. We have the family pack of Leopard, so I would like to keep the original at home and send a copy when my daughter goes off to college in case she needs to recover again. Her machine was originally a Tiger MacBook, so those install disks will not work. If it is not possible to copy the DVD, is there a way to create a bootable utility to do a time machine recovery?

This half-solved my problem. I have had no problems creating a backup copy for my intel based computers, but non-intel based computers are problematic; a G5 powermac tower and a G4 Powerbook. Both with super drives for single density burning. Both have Leopard running, installed from an install disc purchased from Apple. However, neither will mount the copy, but intel based computers will. have burnt/burned with both toast 9 and Disc Utility. Discs won't mount and are "spit out" by the drive.

  • HP LaserJet 1000 problem after Leopard install

Anyone else have a problem printing after the Leopard install?
My printer and driver was recognized but I can't print. When I watch the print queue it say there are errors and fails.
Since HP never made a driver for this printer, I was using a Zenographics driver that worked great. That is, until I upgraded.
I unplugged the USB and power cords, and removed the printer from System Preferences. After plugging everything back in and adding the printer again, the printer seemed like it wanted to print, but still didn't work.
    Please help.

Thank you for your answers. I was hoping someone would reply.
HP LJ 1000 is a great printer and I figured a few people had to have one. It is unfortunate as this printer hardly ever needed the toner changed, and I used it as my main printer. I swear I only changed toner four times in the last five years!
I looked everywhere for a driver and found nothing. HP said they had no updated driver for the Mac (as they told me a year ago, too) and they were not going to create one.
My final solution was to give up my printer to a good neighbor for $50 for her pc.
I researched printers from the Apple store and decided to go with the very Mac friendly HP Laserjet 1022:
    http://store.apple.com/AppleStore/WebObjects/EducationIndividualCustom.woa/94340 03/wa/PSLID?mco=CC919B84&fnode=home/shopmac/macaccessories/printers&nplm=TC976LL/A&wosid=gG2dihO9R0Mg29v6f901bEeWNf2
Hopefully it will be a good printer. After returning the new toner I bought for the LJ1000, I thought Staples would have it in stock. However, after trying three different stores, it seems the best way to get a Mac-friendly printer is to go online.
I hope I helped you out as well.
    Again, thank you.

  • Can't get past language selection with Leopard Install disk

My 1 year old Intel Mac Mini, which had been running 10.5.4 without problems suddenly froze up. The mouse was still active but I couldn't click anything. I turned the system off with the power button. When I restarted it got as far as the login screen, but clicking the user didn't do anything. I was able to log in using safe mode (hold down shift when starting). I ran the disc utility, repaired permissions and verified the disc. Seemed OK, but still the same behavior (freeze at login screen) when I try to boot normally.
I tried booting from the Leopard install disk. When it reached the language selection page there were some strange-looking horizontal lines in the display. Clicking the "proceed" button caused a copy of the button's graphic to appear at the top of the page and nothing else happened. Very puzzling, since I had upgraded OS X using that same disc.
I have a Superduper backup from a couple of weeks ago. It won't boot up normally either. Any ideas? Unfortunately, I'm 2 weeks out of warranty!
    Thanks,
    jwstex

I would probably start looking at the ram to see if it's worked loose or a board has gone bad (rare, but it happens).
Make sure no external drives or other unnecessary connections.
If the ram doesn't fix the problem, then you could also Zap the PRAM by holding down the Command + Option + P + R keys during boot up. Hold down the keys until the Mac goes through 3 startup chimes, then just release the keys and continue to boot normally. Check your clock settings if it boots.

  • Backlight shuts off when booted on Leopard Install DVD

Booting my macbook pro on the optical drive (by holding the "C" key at power up),with the Leopard install DVD causes the backlight on the display to shut off. Reboot with the OS on the hard disk (OS 10.4) and the display works fine. Playing with the screen brightness keys has no effect on the backlight when booted on the DVD. I also did a pmu reset (remove battery and hold the power button for 5 seconds) The display functions normally during regular use, It only happened when booted on the leopard install DVD. I was able to complete the install with a 2nd display connected to the dvi port and the display now works properly when booted under 10.5. Just wondering if anyone has seen this behavior or has an idea of the cause.

I have the same issue. Can some one please help? Thanks

  • Why does imac G5 eject leopard install disk

Why does imac G5 eject leopard install disk?  I'm trying to help my father get online to read the newspaper using an iMac G5 1.8 GHz 17".  I've installed a new hard drive and reinstalled software and rus software updates until I've reached 10.4.11 and the lovely "your software is up to date" message.  When I put in the Leopard 10.5.1 Install DVD, it auto ejects within 15 seconds and never gets mounted and never shows on desktop.  When I place the same DVD in my Intel MacBook Pro running 10.6.8, the disk mounts and the install window opens as usual.  Any suggestions on what i'm missing here? thanks

  • Failed Leopard Install - Not Booting

I apologize in advance for the redundancy of my problem. But I've read all other post surrounding my problem but nothing has seemed to work.
After failing a Leopard Install, I tried to restore my HD using the boot disc. But it gets stuck on the grey apple screen. Then it asks for a restart manually. I believe it is related to a kernel panic, but I'm afraid I'm not too familiar with what that exactly is. Am I going to have to get more RAM or even take it in for service?
    P.S.
    I've tried reseting PRAM.
    Holding (option) key during restart.
Pulling power cord, then reinserting and rebooting
    rebooting with boot disc.
    holding (C) key during restart.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    How old is the G5?
When you are getting a restart screen is it the one described on my FAQ*:

  • After Leopard install Mac OSX Setup Assistant is in a constant loop

I have a friend who I persuaded to switch to mac a few years ago and he recently installed Leopard without much success on his second mac (it was fine on his macbook pro 2.13ghz), a Power PC G5 1.8ghz - 1.25 gb ram. When I had a look at it it appears to be stuck in Mac OSX Setup Assistant mode - i.e. when you put the info in and the Screen says "enjoy your computer" or whatever it just comes back to the same Setup page. (What's weird is can't get to the end unless it has an internet signal - wireless at his place and ethernet at mine)
I'm guessing something went wrong during installation as when I restart with the Leopard disc in and hold "c" Leopard install launches but only shows drivers and some languages need to be installed. I copied all important files via target mode and it shows that the Computer is "10.5". I'm guessing the full installation was interrupted. There doesn't appear to be a way to do a complete re-install. I ran Tech-Tool and Disk Warrior to rebuild and verify permissions etc. No joy!
I'd like to do a full re-install of Leopard but I can't. As I have all important info backed up I guess I might have to completely wipe the disc and install Leopard on the blank disc - should this be okay as I've never done that before?
    Any other suggestions appreciated.

If I press go back ...it just goes back to the Welcome screen.
I should mention that if I try and select anything that needs to be opened in a window from the Apple menu nothing opens up. For example if I choose System Preferences it will show System Preferences in the top menu but no window will open.

  • After Leopard Install PPC MAc restarts then shuts down

SO, I installed Leopard on a PPC mac 1.2 gig hz mac with firwire and DVD and 1.5 GHZ of memory. The install went okay (actually upgrade from last OSX), I got the Installed Okay message. The system shut down and restarted and then shut down again. That was it. What did I do wrong or what should I do. This is a family pack, I installed Leopard okay on my Macbook 1.8 ghz laptop just fine. Why will it not install on the Power PC mac? It is G4 AGP graphics. Is that the problem?

You do not need another drive to do Migration, You need another Mac to do a migration. I see that you have a MacBook 1.8 ghz laptop, use that Mac to migrate the account, you can delete it off of the MacBook after you send it back to the AGP. besides this will save all of the setting and account information for your daughters Mac. Currently I have a 60GB HD on my AGP and it is able to operate Leopard and Home files just fine, Now to handle the the very large files and storage of archive data I have an external 160 Lacie HD Firewire. BTY. The AGP can only handle a Max of 128 GB HD (master). Anything larger is not used, even if the HD is partitioned, Slaves and external HD are OK for larger storage. Additionally after you have done all of your backups and save files and apps. You might want to try an "install and archive" first. Some AGP users have had success with it. I did not and had to do a complete reformatting. FYI. My current 60GB HD used to be my slave drive. I had the original drive HD as the Master and both were internal. the AGP provides the plugs and bracket inside the AGP for two drives. But the original drive started to go bad and I have to image/clone the drive and moved the Master to the 60GB HD and moved the data that was on the 60 to the new external 160.
Additional: Make sure that you set the jumpers to either master or slave on the internal HD, and you can only have one master HD. Check HD information on how to set jumper for each brand.

  • Do I need to buy a particular 10.5 Leopard DVD for my Power Mac G5

I have been having problems with my Power Mac G5, which can only be resolved by reinstalling leopard, and since I don't have the DVD, I have been looking for a 10.5 Leopard DVD for my Power Mac G5. However I have noticed that some discs say they only work for a particular kind of mac ( which is true, since I attempted installing leopard with a macbook pro dvd, which did not turn out well ). Do I have to look for a 10.5 Leopard DVD that is particularly for a Power Mac G5? If so, where can I find one?

Yes, Gray Install Discs, the ones that come with Macs are Machine specific.
    You need the Retail version.
Trouble is Apple no longer sells it, check eBay & such for the Retail version, not the Gray Discs...

  • Leopard Install Issue...

I'm trying to upgrade my 1st Gen 17" Macbrook Pro to Leopard and after clicking on the icon to begin the install, it keeps on asking me to restart the computer (in multiple languages). It says "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button." Even after 7 restarts, it continues to ask me to restart.
Thankfully, if I eject the disk, the computer runs like normal.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    madeinguam,
Try turning off your computer, then turn it back on while holding down the (Option) key. When it loads the startup manager 'an icon for your Macintosh HD and your Leopard install disc' and select your Leopard install disc. Note if your disk isn't in you can boot it in when in the startup manager.
    Hope that helps.

  • Leopard install frozen

I'm trying to install Leopard on my 867MHz Power Mac G4 MDD and it freezes quanndo starts loading the installation so that the image appears as Aurora background.
    I installed Tiger normally.
And then also tried using a Leopard upgrade DVD froze when it starts to load the screen with the apple logo.
    Power Mac G4 867Mhz MDD
    1.5GB RAM DDR-400 (2 x 512MB + 2 x 256MB)
    HD SEAGATE ST3250823ACE 250GB 7200rpm IDE
    Optical LG GH22NP21 - INTERNAL 22X SUPER-MULTI DRIVE
Nvidia GeForce4 MX with 32MB Graphics Card

      1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
       3. Click the Erase tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully you'll be able to get a good install.

  • Leopard Install Hangs because G4-MDD goes to sleep

Computer in question: Power Mac G4, MDD, Dual 867MHz.
Had Leopard running fine, though I remember having a similar issue when doing the original install. The main hard drive crashed (no question - terrible grinding noise). Replaced the hard drive, started Leopard install, selected a recovery from Time Capsule. Started off great, everything seemed fine. When I came back later, I noticed the screen was off (power management) - moved the mouse and it came alive, but I got the 'system busy candy spinner' (not sure what else to call it) and the progress bar had stopped moving.
Tried several more times, and I noticed each time the process seemed to be working fine until I forgot to move the mouse every so often, then once it slept there was no coming back.
I tried installing a bare minimum Leopard install (much faster than a Time Machine recovery) and set the Energy options to "never / never", but the Leopard install DVD seems to have its own settings, and there's no apparent way to change the energy settings after booting the install DVD (no Control Panel access).
Any ideas other than sitting at the workstation for hours, moving the mouse every 10 minutes?
As I said I remember having an issue during the regular Leopard install like this as well - but that was much shorter and easier to sit there moving the mouse while the install completed. The Leopard recovery from Time Capsule is estimating anywhere between 2-8 hours depending on when I look...

Well, I might've found a fix - booted the install DVD and after selecting a language I went to the Utilities menu, picked Terminal. From a terminal session I typed:
    pmset -g
Which shows the current power management settings. I could see it was set to sleep the display, disk, and system after 10 minutes. Then I typed:
    pmset -a sleep 0 disksleep 0 displaysleep 0 force
Which told it to change these three to NEVER sleep, and "force" makes the command activate the settings even if it can't write the settings to disk (which it can't on a DVD obviously!)
    pmset -g
Then told me those three were set to 0 (zero) and I exited the terminal process and continued on with the Time Machine full system restore (also in the Utilities menu) and I think this will do it... I'll update this thread and let you know!

  • Big problem with plain blue screen on boot (not related to Leopard install)

Hi - eventually I have worked out how to post to this forum!
I have had a major disaster with my iMac this weekend. It began with a lock-up when I was working happily away in Blender. I got a beachball and the machine froze. I had ssh set up so I tried to go in from my iBook to kill a few processes to try to get it back on track, but without success, so eventually I had to hold down the power button to power off the machine.
When I tried to reboot, I got the grey screen and the spinning wheel, then a plain blue screen with no mouse, no beachball and the machine just seemed to stop. I could hear the CPU going like the clappers and was able to ssh in again and check top to see what was going on, and the WindowServer(?) process was maxed out at 100%. I wasn't able to kill it and again nothing happened and on a further reboot I just had a plain blue screen.
I have since spent a few hours trying various things to sort this out, so far to no avail.
    - Single User mode, fsck -fy: reports everything fine, no change
    - Reset PRAM, no change
    - Tried booting off my backup Firewire drive (SuperDuper) but it won't boot to it, same blue screen hang
    - Ran Disk Utility from Leopard Install DVD - permissions, checked disk, etc - no change
    - Ran DiskWarrior in Target Disk mode from iBook, no change
    - Ran Tech Tool Deluxe, no change
    - Removed RAM (not third party), put it back in, no change
    - Reinstalled Leopard using Archive & Install, no change
    - Reinstalled Leopard again, using Erase & Install, no change
    - I think I'm running out of options.
I'd have been on the phone to Apple by now but it's Sunday tomorrow and a Bank Holiday in the UK tomorrow so it will be Tuesday at the earliest, and I know I'm going to be frustrated by having to go through all this with them again!
A weird thing is - I CAN get logged in in Safe Mode now and again, and when I do, the mouse pointer has a small, almost transparent rectangular graphic attached that follows the pointer around. Barely perceptible but it's there - it looks like a Leopard icon for a txt file but barely visible. Has anyone ever seen anything like this?? It really feels like something has corrupted, but with a totally clean OS install, is that possible?
As it stands, I'm sure this is a hardware issue but I'm not sure. I had a couple of power outages lately which I suspect are behind this.
I'd be really grateful for anyone's thoughts on this - it's been a really frustrating couple of days.
    Cheers.

As far as I can see, resetting the power manager on this model of iMac involves resetting the SMC, which is unplugging all cables for 15 seconds, plugging back in and powering up. Tried that too, same result. In terms of third party software, nothing. Clean Leopard install is the lot.
