Leopard iPhoto incompatibility with QuarkXPress 6.5

Hi All,
I ran into a strange issue deploying a new iMac with OS 10.5.4. My customer is running a network of all OS 10.3.9 and OS 10.4.11 macs. They are all using QuarkXPress 6.5.x. They import photos into the OS 10.3 and OS 10.4 versions of iPhoto then move them into Quark to do layouts. When we tried moving a photo from the iPhoto that comes with version 10.5 into Quark, it crashes Quark immediately. It appears something that the new iPhoto is doing with formatting the picture causes Quark to have a fit and die. The version of iPhoto that came with the Leopard machine is iPhoto 08 version 7.1.3(364). My customer is planning on upgrading Quark to be current so that will probably solve the issue. It is interesting that there was no problem until using OS 10.5/iPhoto 08 though. Hopefully this helps someone else. If anyone knows of a workaround, please let me know.

There is NO Leopard version of iPhoto
OS upgrades and iLife upgrades are totally independent
The latest version of iLife is iLife '08 which contains iPhoto 7.x.x - the current version being 7.1.3
First you might consider posting this in the iPhoto '08 forum - http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1192 - as that is where most of the iPhoto guru's hang out the most
Second please describe how you are moving photos from iPhoto to Quark - there are many ways to "move" photos, some correct and some incorrect.
It is also possible that the version of Quark that they have is incompatible with Leopard - if they are using iPhoto correctly you are simply dealing with JPEGs and any version of iPhoto would be the same by the time Quark sees the JPEG - iPhoto is doing nothing strange or fancy to the photos

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. How did you perform the Leopard upgrade? Did you do an Archive and Install without selecting the option to retain the user and internet settings? And are you using Photoshop for the RAW editing? Check in your HD/Library folder for a folder titled ScriptingAdditions. It gets removed when when you do a A&I without those options being selected. Can you open Photoshop and use it outside of iPhoto? If so then forget what I just wrote as it is not a possible reason.

IPhoto6 - after a full reistall of Snow Leopard, iphoto does not display thumbnails. I've restored from time machine, rebuilt the library and run through the rebuild thumbnails function with no success. The files are there, I just get a dotted outline.

Try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Reinstalling iPhoto - came with Panther, disappeared after upgrade to Leopard

iPhoto worked after upgrade from Panther (10.3.X) to Leopard (10.5.8) but later disappeared - I think a disk error occured. My synched backup copy also got wiped. Started all over - zeroed the disks in case I was going to sell it - installed original Panther - iPhoto worked. Re-installed upgrade to Leopard 10.5.8 - now get the error: "You cannot use this version of the application iPhoto.app with this version of Mac OS X."
Any ideas?

10.3 (original disk) installed o.k. on the spare disk, and iPhoto comes up but I can tell by the interface that the one I was using last summer was a newer version. I will see if it will upgrade from Panther with software updates, and then install Leopard after that. Maybe that is the path needed to recover it.

IPhoto 7.1.1 with Leopard Have Issues With Some Type 1 Postscript Fonts

I was attempting to reprint a photo book created in iPhoto 7.1.1 that worked perfectly in 10.4.11 (Tiger). I had upgraded my G5 Tower Mac last week to Leopard and had run all the updaters—so my OS and associated files were up to date. Upon rendering the document during the checkout process, iPhoto crashed.
After looking around in the forums for answers and finding no satisfactory solution, I did some detective work on my own. After each system/software tweak, I attempted to render the book as a PDF to disk, which is a similar function to when a book is rendered for printing through the iPhoto service.
I reinstalled iLife and ran all the updaters. No luck.
I removed font caches and restarted. No luck.
I replaced some of the Type 1 fonts used in the book. Partial success.
I replaced all the Type 1 fonts in the book with their OpenType counterparts. Bingo. PDF book created flawlessly.
I haven't tried going through the online printing process yet, but it looks like it will be successful.
So my questions are: Is Leopard breaking my old Type 1 fonts?
Is this related to the general Acrobat printing issues others are having?
Anyone else experiencing odd behavior with Type 1 fonts in iPhoto?

Thanks. No I don't own a version of iPhoto11, although I was using iPhoto on my iMac Duo2 (late 2006) - operating system Lion or Mountain Lion I seem to remember - until the hard drive packed up. A few days ago I bought a Snow Leopard installation DVD from Apple Shop online and yesterday successfully put it on a My Passport for Mac external drive (£49 from Maplin), a much cheaper option than replacing the internal hard drive. No-one from Apple Support had suggested this!!!
Everything is working fine but I am missing my iPhoto. iTunes downloaded free online works well. I have a packed-full Iomega portable hard drive which I had backed up using Time Machine for the past several years.
Do you think I could get a compatible iPhoto from this

Iphoto library incompatibility with other applications

Don't like the way iphoto hogs all the images in iphoto library and does not allow other applications to browse or use the images. Do we have to have two photo archives (pictures and iphoto library) if we want to use more effective photo editing software. i.e.. edit from pictures folder then import into iphoto? Thus using up double the amount of disk space.

Using iPhoto 08 with Photoshop elements

I am a recent Mac convert and I'm loving it.
However, I need some help understanding how best to use Photoshop Elements in conjunction with iPhoto 08. I was thinking I could use iPhoto to keep track of photos and do basic edits and link to other iLife apps etc, and use Photoshop to do more indepth editing.
I would like to know the most efficient way to open photos from inside iPhoto, into Photoshop. And how to get them back into iPhoto.
I realise I can drag a photo and create a copy on to the desk top and then open it with Photoshop, do some editing, save it to a/any folder, then import it back into iPhoto but…
1) is there a better way to do this?
2) I'm concerned with filling up my hard drive with multiple copies!

IPhoto 08 with Capture NX as the external editor

Can some one explain how to most easily access the photos in the iphoto library in Capture NX. When I shoot in NEF raw files I know the files are buried in the iPhoto library but don't understand how to most easily access them with NX. Sure if I double click an individual iPhoto thumbnail and I have chosen NX as my ext. editor NX opens up. But if I open NX first, am I just screwed using that interface to select multiple iPhotos? I stayed with NX as I am a new Mac switcher and found a trial of the new Aperture didn't process NEFs as well as NX. - Joe Tzougros

Import into the Pictures folder and then into iPhoto. Once the new files have been imported into iPhoto you can delete the copy in the Pictures folder.

IPhoto 08 with PSE 4.0

I recently upgraded to Leopard and then also got iLife 08. I am a digital scrapbooker and use Photoshop Elements 4.0 in connection with iPhoto on my MacBook Pro. My question relates to iPhoto closing when I try to copy a picture into PSE . . . not sure why it closes and getting frustrated. Checked the Adobe site and found a PSE updater but can't install it . . . what's a girl to do?

What version of PSE are you running and what happened when you tried to run the Adobe Photoshop Elements Updater application?

Printing iPhoto Pictures with Titles

iPhoto provides for titles with pictures and a description with the picture as well. Is there a way to print pictures with their itle and description?

Within iPhoto the only way is using the contact sheet option as Daiya pointed out. If you want to put the info on the photo itself you'll need a 3rd party editor link Photoshop Elements, Seashore orAcorn. If you go to VersionTracker.com and search for "image editor" you'll get a number of candidates.

Export from iPhoto 08 with sequential filenames retaining iPhoto order?

Is there some way to export photos from iPhoto 08 with filenames that will be seen by the Finder (or a PC) as having the same order as the photos in iPhoto? I used the Sequential Filenames option in the Export pane to export a 1790 image album, but the sequence numbers were assigned as 1,2, 3, .... , 1790. That is ordered in the Finder, or on a PC, as 1, 10, 100, 1000, 1001, etc., and when my son displayed them using his Play Station 3, that is the order in which they came up. If the sequence numbers were assigned as 0001, 0002, 0003, ... , 1790, I would expect the files to retain the desired order, but I can't find a way to accomplish this.

Yes there is. Put the photos in an album, sort them as desired, go to the Photos->Batch Change->Title to Text with the checkbox ticked to add a sequential number.
Next, export those sequentially retitled photos using the File->Export->File Export menu option with the format set to JPG and theFile Name set to Title. This will give you what you want.

Is it possible to publish an iPhoto slideshow with the music?

Is it possible to publish a slideshow with music so others can hear the music as well as see the photos? Thanks. (I have a MobileMe account).

An alternative method to put the slideshow up for others to view is to import the QT movie back into iPhoto and put it in a MobileMe gallery and publish.
If the movie is large still another alternative is to import the movie into iMovie and share it from there to a MMe account where you can select multiple sizes so those with slower internet connections can choose a smaller version to play. The following screenshot is the export window from iMovie:

Syncing IPhoto Library with two users

Im a switcher so if this question is somewhat basic that is the reason why. My wife and I share the same Macbook but we have created two separate accounts on the same machine. As such, we each have our own iPhoto library. Is there a way that we can make sure that each of our iPhoto libraries contain the same pictures as the others. We are finding that when we upload new picture to iPhoto, we haven't found a way to transfer these same pictures from one account to the other.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

The only way to get two libraries to be the same is to use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager to merge the two libraries into one and then share that one library.
The optimal way to share a single library between two users on a Mac is to have that library on an external HD whose ownership is set to be ignored as described in the Apple article: iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users
As the article indicates an alternative way would be to create a disk image (dmg) large enough to hold the library and leave room for expansion, put your merged library in the disk image and move it to the Shared folder on the Mac. Have each user set their System/Account preference to have that disk image mounted when they log in. That way it will automatically appear on the desktop like an external HD would. You would have to point your iPhoto application to that library by launching iPhoto with the Option key depressed and, when asked, select Choose Library.
In either case be sure the external HD or the disk image is mounted before you launch iPhoto.

I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

IPhoto - IDisaster with accessing pics in Finder

I figured that somehow software developers decided it would be very neat to not link Finder with IPhoto together and make them work separately. That I can sort of live with, but what happens when one accidentally edits image in Photoshop and saves it under different name in IPhoto folders. It doesn't seem to display this image in Iphoto. Now, when I apple click on file in Photoshop it says it's in "Modified" folder under IPhoto. When I go "Show file" on some randow image to grant me access to this folder in Finder it only seems to display "Originals" folder. How do I retrieve my modified files?

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
