Leopard is giving me a headache

I just installed Leopard a few days ago and just about every application crashes with regularity. I can't figure it out. I'm also a little disappointed with the program, which is mostly bells and whistles. Is reinstalling the answer?

Have you tried creating a new account, name it "test" and see how your apps work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
Let us know and we'll troubleshoot this further.
AFA the "bells & whistles", I agree they are the first thing you notice. But a lot of functionality has been added to the system that you'll discover as you work on it (and some functionality taken away

  • Gmail is giving my grandparents headaches in mail program

    So i talked my grandparents into ditching their old windows 2000 machine for a new macbook.
    I signed them up for a gmail acct. and set everything up in Leopards mail program and everything was great for about 4 weeks. Now they are constantly getting error messages from Mail that the password is being rejected. Occasionally it will work and let an email or 2 through. This is mostly occurs on sending but occasionally on recieving as well. Is gmail and osx mail just a bad combo or what? is there a better free email acct option out there that will work with osx mail?
    And by the way, am I blind or has the search option disappeared for these forums?
    Thanks, tim

    they can try:
    Open Mail.app,
    Go to Preferences, Account, select Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):, select the drop-down box "Edit" server List, click on "Advanced" button in the center, make sure the gmail User Name is input in the box (do not include @gmail.com), just the log-in name, make sure the password matches the password they set at gmail from the web interface. Also check and make sure the port for outgoing mail is set correctly, close windows and Save.
    Optional:
    They can also go to gmail.com and click on troubleshooting POP or IMAP whichever they are using and there is also a section on password resets including step-by-step configuration of Apple Mail 3.0

  • Leopard has caused me a headache

    Having trouble with programs quitting unexpectedly. And lately itunes will not let me delete or search without closing unexpectedly. All of this has been a result since I have installed Leopard and I dont have the disk to try and reinstall. I will how ever have a copy within the month when I purchase a new Macbook so if that will help me then or if there are any other solutions available as of now I would love to know.

    There in lies your problem. Leopard was not around in the G5 days, so the only Leopard disk that is designed to go on a G5 is the Retail Version. There were never any system specific disks for any G5.
    If you are adamant about getting it to work the way you are describing, then I won't try to help you anymore, cause you won't listen to reason.
    Good Luck.
    OH... Your Apple Tech is in error. All Leopard Disks are NOT the same.

  • New iOS 7.1 keyboard font is giving me a headache!

    I don't think I am alone in saying the new 7.1 keyboard key font is seriously awful compared with ios7 version which was refined and easy on the eyes, now it's harsh, clunky, garish, blocky and horrible to use! Its spoilt using my iPad and iphone! I get a headache now after using it for over 5 mins too What are you thinking Apple? PLEASE PLEASE put a font type option or dark keyboard option on an URGENT update, honestly it is that bad I can hardly stand using it.
    Anyone else feel the same?
    And yes Bold is turned off.

    I doubt you've even seen the new keyboard,
    I have, and I adjusted to the change. Problem solved.
    if any other user has a relevant comment on how to be able to look at the keyboard without getting a headache and make it usable again, I'll be happy to hear them.
    You cannot change the keyboard. It is what it is.
    And I'll appreciate a more qualified answer than to go with Windows or Android. Thanks
    Well, with Android you can install custom keyboards. There are many to choose from. That will indeed solve your problem. I think that is indeed a qualified answer.

  • ITunes is giving me a headache.........

    I tried to download the new iTunes and quicktime but this message came up: Quicktime installation failed Error Code : - 3 What's going on? I can't open iTunes because of this..........

    Hi Albert,
    Please provide as much detail as possible. You have a 4th generation iPod, so should we assume you've had iTunes install previously?
    You may try to uninstall both iTunes and QuickTime completely before installing. As well, people have had greater success installing QuickTime from the Standalone installer (after the iTunes installer completes).
    From your post, it sounds like you're running the install right from the download. Try saving the download to disk first, and then run the installer from that.
    Last, you may want to grab the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (search Google) and see if that helps any.
    Be sure to exit all other applications and turn off virus and spyware scanners during the installation. If you're concerned about security, unplug the Internet during the install.

  • Really need Help - it's giving me a headache!!!

    Okay, I will be the first to admit that I am useless!!! But given credit I am determined.
    I have been following a tutorial for the past 6 hours (thereabouts) I have understood almost all of it but for some reason when I put in an invisble button and I add an action script, it is choosing to ignore the action script but the weird thing is some do follow the script and some don't, it makes absolutely no sense. The problem is the tutorials quite old which means that chances of getting hold of the person who originally did it seems unlikely.
    Has anyone experienced something like this before? Does anyone have any suggestions they could throw my way? Or would anyone who is really good with Flash mind taking a quick look and seeing, what exactly it is I am doing wrong?
    Appreciate it guys.
    Xan

    if your invisible button has its alpha assigned to zero, it will respond to the mouse.  if you're using its visible property, it won't respond.

  • IPhone - Instruments giving me a Headache in finding Leaks

    Using the same exact codebase to parse a given static XML file (patterned after seismicXml example), instruments would tell me different "memory leak" results from each execution. Sometimes, no leak, sometimes a bunch of leaks.
    So what I do is, create a simple View application, and have the parseXml called immediately on the constructor of the controller. Then I just click "Build & Go" on XCode several times, and review the results on instruments (after the first automatic detection).
    I'm guessing it's something stupid on my end... Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

    You should have a look at the docs - Instruments is a complicated program and the docs contain a lot of what you need to use it effectively.
    It sounds like you are looking at the result of the entire life of an application. I would not recommend that.
    In general the way I use Leaks is to start within the program at some initial state. Do an initial leak check, do some operation I want to examine, get back to that same initial state where you expect any allocated memory to be reclaimed, check for leaks again. I always turn off the auto check feature and use the leak check button in Leaks since I want control over when I do the check to minimize confusion.
    So in your example add a button to the VC and move the code that does the parseXML there. Once the application has started, turn off auto check, check for leaks, push the parseXml button, when the operation is complete, do another leak check.
    Hope that helps.

  • Leopard graphic update

    I downloaded and installed the recommended Leopard graphic update, and now certain type on websites appears blurry. I've had this problem before, but fixed it by changing the font smoothing style and text sharpening, however, now no matter what changes I make, the problem persists. Is there anything else I can do? For all intents and purposes major sites like CNN's breaking news banner reads like I'm wearing coke-bottle glasses, and working with larger non-standard type in Pages is giving me a headache. Any advice welcome.

    It's actually what I do all the times. When I say that I start in 'closed lid' mode I intend that I open the lid to press the start button and immediately close the lid. In this particular case the Apple Cinema Display remains inactive and after a short while the apple on the lid of my Macbook Pro turns lit and when I open the screen has a black multi language alert which advise me to restart my machine by pressing the start button. After I restart the my Mac in 'open lid' mode and after I log in, appears a message that tells me that the system was restarted after crash and here comes the detailed error that follows:

  • CAN I REMOVE LION AND GO BACK TO SNOW LEOPARD

    can i remove lion and return to snow leopard

    I see the help offered.  I have just posted the same question and now see others with the same problem.  Lion may be fine, but for me It's giving me a headache.  A couple years ago I switched from a long time PC user to Mac largely because I was tired of the constant "upgrade" "patch and fix" merry-go-round we get with "those other guys".  My Macbook Pro worked well with Snow Leopard but was eventually talked into the Lion upgrade.  24 hours later, I'm sorry I did.  Some of my software that worked for me is not supported by Lion and neither is my Linkstation (where I have my files and backups).  I tried installing the disk that came with the system to revert or return to factory condition but it too returned an error message "...software not supported...".  I tried both pressing "C" during startup and when that failed, tried installing from the disk after Lion loaded, same result.
    I see that suggested as a solution so I'll try again, just in case I missed something, but if there are other thoughts or suggestions, they are appreciated.  I've tried to go into disk utility to partician, nope not allowed, can should I "erase" the current partician or ????
    I don't know... thanks for any suggestions to clean this up.
    Thanks.

  • Installing Snow Leopard on Macbook Pro 15'' 2.4 ghz

    I have a MacBook Pro 15" 2.4ghz Intel Core Duo with 2 Gigs Ram and it comes with Leopard. I'm having problems installing Snow Leopard, keeps giving me the option to Backup or Restart. Is there something I'm doing or missing? Please help.

    How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
    Boot from your current Tiger Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and later.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
    Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
    If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
    You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
    The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
    Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
    Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
    Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
    Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
    Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. If updating:
    Download and install update(s)
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).

  • Headache over TLD file

    I'm defining a function in a TLD file, and it's giving me a headache with the following error:
    org.apache.jasper.JasperException: Method "search" for function "search" not found in class "searchtool.SearchFunction"In Tomcat 6.0.18. The error showed up when I attempted to add an array of Strings as a parameter to the function, both in the TLD and in the SearchFunction object. Note I was able to make it work with no problem when just using a String as a parameter. I've done this several times now can I can't help but think I'm doing it right. I'm left to assume my definition of the function in the TLD, or my array syntax, is off. This is the function definition:
    <function>
            <name>search</name>
            <function-class>
                searchtool.SearchFunction
            </function-class>
            <function-signature>
                java.lang.String search(
                    searchtool.SearchBean,
                    java.lang.String, java.lang.String[])
            </function-signature>
        </function>And the SearchFunction Object:
    public class SearchFunction {
        public static String search(SearchBean object,
                String text,  java.lang.String[] returnFields) {
            return object.search(text, returnFields);
    }Any help would be appreciated, and if you need any more information just let me know.

    I still say use .tag files as in JSP2.0.
    Put it under the /WEB-INF/tlds/ directory
    then
    <%@taglib uri="/WEB-INF/tlds/Sample.tld" prefix="samp"%>
    Tip:
    Depending on which Netbeans you using, you should have the auto-complete functionality.
    Inside the uri="" or tagdir="" press ctrl+space this should give you a list of all available files.

  • MacBook & HP W2007 monitor

    After buying my GF a Samsung 216BW LCD for her WinXP system this Christmas and seeing how great that display looked, I started hunting for an external monitor to hook up to my MacBook.
    On seeing how sharp, clear and detailed HP's W2007 monitor looked running Vista at a local electronics store, and being that I really like the MB's native glossy display, I purchased one of these 20" LCD's just over a week ago.
    However, the display of this monitor driven by my MB isn't as sharp as I'd hoped for, and text looks especially fuzzy. In addition, any screen area showing what should normally be a smooth gradient of shades of the same basic color (like the grey menu bars at the top of most Mac OS X Leopard applications) is displayed as horizontal bars of different shades where you can see the color change from one area to the next. A really good example of this occurs while viewing the blue background of the website, tuaw.com, and the shade bars seem to flicker when I scroll up and down the webpage.
    I have my MB connected to the HP display using the provided DVI cable and the mini DVI to DVI adapter that I purchased at an Apple store. Resolution of the display is the max. 1680 x 1050 pixels. I have also tried the Apple mini DVI to VGA adapter, but the display is even more blurry than through DVI.
    I've also tried calibrating the display several times using the Apple ColorSync utility and this did help give a more lifelike look to some of the family portraits in iPhoto, but on the whole skin tones look blotchy with areas of bluish-green, instead of that natural smooth graduation in color that I know is there from viewing the same photos on the MacBook's own display.
    If I had to sum up the problem I'm having, it's that the HP's display seems like 16-bit color (to borrow a Windows term) versus the 32-bit that I know (think?) is coming out of my MB. There just seems to be too much graininess to everything on this external display and it's spoiling my viewing pleasure..... besides giving me a headache!
    Has anyone else had a similar experience with this HP monitor, or it's 22" brother, the W2207? I bought the smaller 20" model because the resolution is the same for both displays and I thought mine would look clearer as a result.
    Is there some 'trick' to setting up one of these monitors, or could I possibly have a bad HP display and need to replace it?
    Any and all help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Nigel

    Exchanged my monitor for a new one of the same model tonight. Have it hooked up now and it is a big improvement over the prior sample. Out of the box colours are very good (family photos are realistic), but the horizontal gradient problem is still there - although to a lesser degree.
    It can be seen in the the navigation banner at the top of this webpage and all application window headers, and while the blue background at tuaw.com is much smoother, the gradients are still there in the top 2-3" of the screen.
    However, my other two "benchmarks" (iTunes Store webpages for 'Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End', and 'The Brothers Grimm') still show the above problem very clearly. The gradients appear in the grey area at top right for 'Pirates...', and throughout the whole page for 'Brothers Grimm' which shows coarse steps from top to bottom going from black to grey.
    I think I'm going to give HP a call tomorrow to get their take on this matter.
    On a positive note, neither of these panels had a dead pixel and while the bleedthrough on the first monitor was significant, this latest LCD has barely any.
    If anyone can add anything else that I should be doing, or looking into, I would appreciate it.

  • Can't View More than 1 Calendar at a time

    Hi, Just got my first mac since 1992, and starting tofigure it all out.  iCal is giving me a headache.  It looks NOTHING like any of the screenshots I've seen from Apple... first off it's got goldmenus, not system default colors.  (iCal 5 in Lion).
    I managed to get it to pull calendar information from my Google calendar,which is great.  But...  I have like 4-5 different labels in Google calendars,and 3-4 different imported calendars in Google (family, school, work). But they all appear in separate windows, I can't for the life of me figure outhow to view them all on one calendar, in one window.
    Somehow, the only way I can look at different schedules is to goto the "windows" menu, and open up the window for that thing. They are all there, but they all open separate windows.
    And, aside from that, it's only like week, month, yearview.  No week view with lists of things on either side like the screenshots.  I'm so confused, I've looked through every menu, and goggled forlike an hour trying to find an answer, and so far, I can't find ANY way to makeiCal usable.  What's going on here?  There has to be some "viewall in one window" option... otherwise, what's the point?  Who wantsto have to open 7-8 different windows to check what's going on at 9am onThursday?  That's kind of worthless.
    What am I missing?

    Hi,
    From the iCal menu select Preferences... > Accounts tab. Select your Google account in the list and click the Delegation tab. Once the list of Google sub calendars has been populated there, check the ones you want to see in your main iCal window.
    Then go to the main iCal window click the Calendars button then check the calendars you want visible at any one time.
    The iCal UI has changed a huge amount in Lion from that in Snow Leopard and before. Looking at screenshots of previous versions is going be confusing.
    Best wishes
    John M
