Leopard is slow

I am finding that my iMac 2.8 Extreme core with 2 GB of Ram is too slow, with leopard. it slow from waking up from sleep and switching apps, tiger was a lot more efficient. My guess that the apps, which are cool, may not be worth leopard. Even if I reboot apps still run slow, and no I don't have 100's of app running, just iTunes, mail and safari, and every now and then a Game. This is not the only computer I have running leopard, I also have an iMac 20" 2.0 Core Duo with 2GB Ram and Macbook 1.83 Core Duo with 1 GB Ram, they all run so much slower. I the first time I have upgrade an Apple OS and found that things get slower, Wow it gives me windows upgrade flash backs, and to make think worse I purchased the iMac to run Leopard faster

Ok.. So I know that this isnt a powerhouse MAC but It does what I want it to and its got more than enough power to handle Leopard. Currently I have a Mac Mini Intel Solo 1.5 Ghz Processed and I upgraded it to 2 GB of RAM which should be plenty to run Leopard. Tiger Ran flawlessly on it. Now Since ive upgraded to Leopard Ive noticed that things are a little more sluggish than usual. Bootup seems to lag a little bit. Loading the finder takes longer. And once the finder is loaded and I attempt to open the hard drive or browse folders its contents take a few seconds to show up. and at the time nothing is running but the OS. Ive tried opening the Activity Monitor but that takes some time too. Last night I even tried running a disk check and verify Diks permissions and both attempts failed it seemed to cause the system to hard lock for whatever reason. So I broke down last night and completely wiped my drive and restored Tiger. When I get home from work I will finish the install and then install the leopard upgrade with just a base OS no other apps and see how things run if they dont run much better I may restart all over again and stick with Tiger until apple can come out with an update to solve the slowness issue. Rigth now its making me feel like my computer is an ancient dinosaur and Im trying to pinch pennies by holding onto it instead of buying a new mac when my mac is only a year old

  • Snow Leopard is slow on my mac mini

I think snow leopard is slower than leopard on my mac mini. What is the matter?
    (excuse me for my english)

I'm finding the same effect on my Mac Mini (just a few months old).
My Mac Book Pro is actually noticeable faster with Snow Leopard, but the Mac Mini is 10 times slower than it was with Leopard - barely usable at all.
My Mac Mini is 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 1GB Ram.
I've checked the activity monitor and othing seems to be hogging the CPU or using up the RAM. I did try to boot into 64 bit kernel, but it didn't seem to work (once I unlocked the firmware).
    ... Fixed! ...
Now my Mac Mini works blindingly fast again. Not sure how I fixed it, but could be a combination of removing all GPG traces, stopping EyeTV helper from starting up and trying many times to boot into 64 bit kernel (but never succeeded).
(Also removed GeekTool and Secrets preference panes).
Also, since the firmware was unlocked I got a Mac Mini Firmware update (to 1.2), so maybe that helped.

  • Snow Leopard - very slow restart / reboot and Boot Camp restart fail

    Hi
After Snow Leopard installation on my Macbook Pro I have a very slow restart. I logged this immediately after install and waited till 10.6.1 was issued and installed but still have the same problems. Hope some one can help.
For an normal restart or reboot I have the grey screen for about 25 secs and then the blue screen hangs for about 2 mins 30 secs before loading desktop. This is longer than Leopard and clearly not what Snow Leopard is meant to be. I have installed on an iMac as well and can see the new normal fast boot.
I also have Windows on it's own partition and use in Boot Camp. I have used this successfully under Leopard.
When I restart from Windows using the Start button and restart, Windows shuts down and then the mac starts up but gets stuck indefinitely on the blue screen. I have waited up to 25 mins then forced a shut down.
However if I restart from Windows using the Boot Camp icon in the taskbar and choose the restart from MacOSX it shuts down windows and restarts the mac in record time!! about 25 secs grey screen and 25 secs blue screen. I can't get this in normal mac mode! - Bizarre.
I have run Disk Utility, repaired permissions, run Tech Tool, Onyx, reset PRAM, deleted startup items plists and removed startup items from System Preferences Account.
I have monitored the Console app for all the startup conditions noted above and will post below. In the logs of the normal mac reboot you can see something to do with Security Agent taking over 2 mins to load. Maybe that is a clue, but I don't understand these messages. Please note that the iStatsmenu app was installed after snow leopard and I had these slow startups before it's installation.
If anyone technical can understand what the **** is going on here I would really appreciate your feedback.
    Regards
    Eric

    Hi guys
Thanks for your contributions. I have made little progress on this issue since posting.
Just as added info, I did a re-install of Snow leopard from install DVD and upgrade again to 10.6.1 and no change to the startup behaviours. Same pattern as before, although the first restart was fast and probably how it is meant to be, then the slow ones reappeared.
I also had a thought that somehow it may be related to the nominated startup disk. There were posts on other boards about similar issues with Leopard where the hanging start was found to be related to the computer not knowing which startup disk to use. I thought maybe as it works when using the boot camp icon from Windows but not the restart button, it may be related, but in OSX and Windows both are set to startup in OSX on HD. So no further joy.
Maybe someone else will come along who can understand the Console logs. Why does the loginwindow and Security Agent take so long?
Do you guys have any clues from your Console system logs? Does yours hang on loginwindow?
The fact that there are so few people with the same problem suggests to me that there is a third party device/preference/ hidden file somewhere that is having an effect and it's not an Apple issue.
I am getting close to wiping the hard drive and starting again....but live in hope.
    Cheers

  • After update to snow leopard macbook slow

    Hey!
I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and since then my white macbook has slowed down. Especially safari is a mess. Takes ages to load, does weird things to fonts and it´s hard to reload websites. But other programmes have a similar issue, be it Pages or Word, i cannot type without problems. Most of the time I am tyoing already and seconds later I see letters on my screen. Everything seems to freeze constantly. I tried disk check, seems to be all working.
    any ideas?
    thanks

Repair permissions and restart your computer.

  • Mac os x leopard is slow

I've had my Mac for over a year now. It's a Mac OS X 10.5.4 leopard. Lately, it has been acting up (freezing and being really slow).I tried deleting a lot of applications that were not necessary. Apparently that didn't work. How do i get my Mac to become faster and not freeze so much?

do you regularly shut it down / do a restart?
--> that free´s up memory (if the virtual memory (SWAP) file is really huge, that slows it down
--> either do regular restarts (costs time), don´t let as many programs run at the same time (costs time) or buy more memory (not really expensive)
for a 10.5 machine you should have at least 1GB, with current prices for RAM, I personally go for at least 2GB (3 or 4 if you´re doing lots of video / 3D / hires-photo stuff)
--> how full is the HD (click on the HD icon once, then command-i (get info) - as a rule of thumb, there shpould be about 20% free space. If you´re below 5%, get a bigger HD (but first throw some more doce and or files away)
--> if all this is not the reason, let cocktail do some maintenance: http://maintain.se/cocktail/download.php
i like it that much, i paid for it
    tell me how it goes

  • I installed Mountain Lion on my Mac, I had Snow Leopard. Slow now

I had Snow Leopard on my Mac and installed Mountian Lion. Installation went fine. Got Mail started on my computer since the program I had is no longer supported (lost all on it). Mail is showing the rainbow wheel a lot and "not responding" everyime. My computer is now running slow and seeing the rainbow wheel frequently. Any suggestions as to what I can do to help? Seriously wonderfing if I should go back to Snow Leopard? thank you!

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
Take these steps when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
PLEASE DO NOT INDISCRIMINATELY DUMP THOUSANDS OF LINES FROM THE LOG INTO A MESSAGE. If you do that, I will not respond.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.

  • 3 year old macbook, 10.6 leopard, completely slowing down to a halt.

I've had this macbook for three years. So far, no problems, until now. I have found, lately, that if I try to run two programs together, for instance utorrent and a movie, the computer slows down to an aboslute halt, and then takes nearly thirty minutes to reboot and get back to normal. I tried copying a file to a USB, and it took 15 minutes to copy 3GBs, and then didn't even complete it. It's extremely frustrating, though I'm sure there is a relatively easy fix. I just have no idea what it is. this is my first Mac, so I don't really know the ins and outs right now. Help would be so greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!!

Your computer is running slowly because it is stuffed.
If I may, its your computer not mine, a suggestion. Get yourself an external hard drive and use it for regular backing up. You are in grave danger now of losing everything on the drive because of the problem of overcrowding.
    For now,
    1. erase as much as you can from the drive;
    2. buy the OS 10.6 DVD - you will need it. If you are in the US, this works: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    3. buy an external drive for regular backing up. This is an example of what you can get for <$100.

  • Move from Tiger to Snow Leopard Has Slowed Down MBP Fall '08

I had to upgrade to snow leopard recently to use new releases of some software I use (like MacSpeech Dictate). Since upgrading, the speed of my mac has slowed significantly. Expose used to happen immediately. Now, it takes 4-7 seconds. When I switch from one program that's already open to another program that's already open, it often takes 10-20 seconds to switch. Etc. I've been a mac guy since before the mac (used the Lisa) and I've never been this unimpressed with an "upgrade."
Is there something I can do to get back to a mac that works when I want it to work?

Sounds like you have some software which hasn't been tested with 10.6. See my upgrade FAQ* for resources to find out if this has happened:
    http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
Downgrading is much harder, though is outlined in this tip:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=6183892
Note, for a MacBook Pro that shipped with less than 10.5, you must use the original MacBook Pro installer discs, or a clone backup to restore your system to 10.4.11 or earlier.

  • Anyone else's Snow Leopard running slower than version 10.5?

My hard drive crashed a few weeks ago and I decided to have the Apple Store upgrade my operating system to 10.6.3 and I have found that it's slower than the previous version. Also, Adobe InDesign doesn't print from the new version.
Is anyone having these problems?? This could make me revert back to a PC

Well, yes, if it was a new HD and your old drive was dead, they would have had to do an install from scratch.
If the old drive was still running they would have done an upgrade & migrate unless you told them otherwise. Problem with migrating is often higher powered apps like CS3, Final Cut, Aperture, etc. don't run well if at all and you end up having to do an erase & install anyway.
What is the exact model iMac you have, and how much RAM? What HD did you buy?
CS3 is old at this point and my understanding is Adobe does not support it on Snow Leopard. Are you experiencing the slowness just with CS3 or with everything (say, Safari, Office, iTunes, etc?)

  • Snow leopard runs slow.

i hate using it.  i am not a gamer - so email, internet and occasionally work related - word, excel, etc.  What can i do?

Snow Leopard is the fastest OS X version still supported.
    It's faster than 10.5, 10.7 or 10.8.
So that means there is a problem with your machine.
    Emergency backup procedure
Drag and drop copy your users file folders (music, pictures, documents etc) to a regular external powered drive as soon as possible.
Do not use, setup or trust only TimeMachine at this time. Unmount and Disconnect all external drives once the backup process is completed.
If you have any over 4GB sized files, those won't copy to a standard formatted FAT32/MSDOS drive from the factory, if you need to save these 4GB+ files use another blank/empty drive and use Disk Utility to format it Option GUID format OS X Extended Journaled (or the standard default one for Mac's).
Mac's  cannot copy to a NTFS formatted drive.
I suggest you run through these user tips to identify the possible causes.

And exhaust all your possible fixes

  • Snow Leopard or "Slow Leopard"?

Since I installed the latest update of Snow Leopard and Safari 5, my Mac Book Air is incredibly slow. 40 minutes to switch users, (I think Apple called it "fast user switching' originally). 5 minutes to save keynote, and so on. Anybody got a solution to this?

I've seen various ways to solve this but it's difficult to suggest solutions without more info.
Launch Activity Monitor before switching to see what is eating resources.
What login items do you have active? Check in Sys Prefs-Accounts-Login items tab.
Try disabling Fast User Switching, then reboot and then enable it again.
Here are some suggestions from Apple when 10.6 is slow.

Come back with more info or questions.

  • Why is leopard so slow

With tiger, or whatever it is that came before leopard, I could comman-click an item on the desktop and it would zap into the trash. Now I do the same thing and it sits there for about 30 seconds, then zaps into the trash.
I've got 6Gb of RAM, is that not enough?

Right or control click then click Move to Trash.
Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow the system down.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you have a minimum of 15% free disk space.
6GB of RAM should be ample.

  • Snow Leopard running slow graphics after reinstallation

    Hey everyone,
I have a very strange question. I've been using my Snow Leopard without any problems for quite some time, but a few days ago I decided it was time for a clean install. I installed the Snow Leopard without any problem, used Software Update to update to the latest version, and than I started noticing some graphic problems:
    1. Slow UI animations (i.e opening Applications Folder, Minimizing Using Gene Effect, etc.)
    2. QuickTime slowness - low fps when I tried playing a movie
    3. Adobe Flash problems - when I installed the latest version, Safari seemed to crash by the first sight of Flash on any site. I reinstalled since then and the pre-installed version seems to work
    4. In Desktop and Screensaver Preferences I am missing the Translucent Menu Bar option
    5. In System Profiler, under Display I have VRAM (Total): 32 MB
It somewhat reminds of the problem described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3479
Only that the resolution is to reinstall, which I did several times with the same DVD I had no problems with before, and nothing seemed to help.
Any ideas how to resolve those problems (well I think they are all related) are appreciated since it is rendering my Snow Leopard pretty much unusable.
    Thanks in advance

  • Script Editor in Snow Leopard painfully slow after adding apps to Library

I have four different Macs that I use from time to time, and on each of them I notice a constant: adding more items to AppleScript Editor's Library window slows performance of mundane operations (opening a dictionary, switching between Library window and editor window, scrolling in the Library window, etc).
In Leopard, I noticed little to know latency in opening a dictionary in Script Editor, but Snow Leopard's AppleScript Editor kills my productivity by making me wait on it with most UI interactions with the Library window.

    Hello
I read another post of yours:
Topic : Issue with applescript and installer scripts
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2143147
It seems that the installer is calling osascript which is run in 64-bit mode under OSX 10.6 whereas XSLT Tools.osax invoked in the script is in 32-bit mode only.
Until the osax becomes 64-bit capable, you may try setting /usr/bin/osascript to run in 32-bit mode. Perhaps by setting an option in Get Info window in Finder as explained in the AppleScript Release Notes listed earlier. (?)
I'm not sure but if Finder cannot do it for commands, you'd need to replace 'osascript' with 'arch -i386 osascript' in the installer script (if it's editable) or let /usr/bin/osascript be wrapped via arch(1) so that it is run in 32-bit mode.
    cf.
    http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/m an1/arch.1.html

  • Snow Leopard - Very Slow - Corruption?

    Hello:
I'm using a Mac Mimi with Snow Leopard 6.8.     For the past day or so, it has been working very slow.
The Applications & Browsers (Firefox & Safari) have been slow to launch.
When I open the Application folder, the application Icons have been slow to load.
I ran Disk Verify and it told me there was a corruption and to run Disk Repair from the Install DVD
    which I did.
After doing this, I ran Repair Permissions and it showed numerious files within Libarary that
    were repaired.
This is now the second time in the past 3 months this has happened.
Can anyone give me some idea/suggestion as to what might be going on here?
    Thanks.

Here's somthing very interesting, it may have been the Mouse.  We have been using the
Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse for several years now, in fact we are now on our third one in
the past 10 years and have never had any problems.
Well, just for the heck of it, I switched to the the extra mouse we have for my wife's laptop, it
is a Logitech Basic Optical Mouse, I went to the Logitech site and downloaded the control
panel for Mac after making a few adjustments in the control panel, this mouse seems to be
working fine.  Now, everything I click on is loading and working normally.
It is very hard to believe, that all the problems may have been caused by a mouse going bad.
We well of course continue the monitor everthing to make sure, but hopefully as simple as this
may have turned out to be - it seems just so silly to have gone through all the other tests only
to have it turn out to be the mouse.
