Leopard & Jpegs

Has anyone had a problem with viewing Jpegs in Preview or any other app ??? There are some jpegs that I can't view with Preview or Photoshop. They show as icons in finder but when I click on them they show as a single line of pixels in preview. Any comments or help appreciated.

I am having a similar issue where Jpegs only show as the Jpeg Icon. Sometimes it does this, sometimes it doesn't. Did you find a fix?

  • Preview won't open JPEG's anymore after Leopard upgrade

Has anyone else had this problem? Now Leopard's Preview program will only open very few of my picture files. Cover-view has the same issue. Example: Pictures taken from my phone downloaded to my hard drive. Double-click on them to open, and all I get is a line in Preview... no picture. The pictures will open in Quicktime, however, but isn't Preview made to view pictures?? Why use Quicktime for that?!?

I have a similar problem with JPEG's. Not all of mine show a thumbnail preview, but when I click on them the finder crashes. Also, they will not import into iPhoto 08. I thought somehow my files were corrupt but last night I reinstalled Tiger and the files work just fine. I have no idea why Leopard is not able to read them properly. When I installed Leopard it was a clean install. This time I am going to try an upgrade and see if it has the same issue. If it does I am going to get rid of Leopard until they get a fix for this. 90% of what I do on the mac is regarding photography and right now I am finding Leopard to be extremely useless.

  • IPhoto says it won't import photos from my Fujifilm Finepix S1000 camera because it's the wrong format (jpeg).  It always has before... but I upgraded to Lion then went back to Snow Leopard and now it's not working.  Suggestions?  Thanks!

iPhoto says it won't import photos from my Fujifilm Finepix S1000 camera because it's the wrong format (jpeg).  It always has before... but I upgraded to Lion then went back to Snow Leopard and now it's not working.  Suggestions?  Thanks!

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • Preview will not display jpegs in Snow Leopard on MacPro

I have read every posting on this site, deleted Entourage, deleted the Preview files suggested, and still I can't get jpeg images to display on my MacPro (I can get PDFs and thumbnails just fine).  I have the same operating system on my iMac, and Preview, works fine (even with Entourage on the computer) and always has.  This problem arose when I moved everything from my iMac to a MacPro I bought from a friend, and found to my shock Preview does not work.  I reloaded Snow Leopard and that did nothing.  Then, as I indicated, I did all the suggestions posted here, but had no success.  Is there something wrong with the MacPro?  I don't want to upgrade to Lion on this computer because I need it for editing on FCP 7.  I do documentaries and really need Preview to work. The previous owner did not need Preview for images when he used the computer so I don't know if it ever worked.   Any ideas?   Last resort, I will upgrade the MacPro to LIon and see if Preview works.  If it does, I will just use the MacPro for Avid projects and continue to use my iMac for Final Cut projects.  I just want to see if there is anything I can try before I do this.

    deleted Entourage
Don't know who would have suggested that, but it was completely unnecessary. Entourage and Preview have absolutely no affect on each other.
    deleted the Preview files suggested
What suggested files? File names, please.
Is there something wrong with the MacPro?
With the hardware itself? No, it's obviously a software issue.
This problem arose when I moved everything from my iMac to a MacPro
What do you mean by "everything"? Every single item, including the OS from the iMac, or just your user account and apps by using Migration Assistant?
I reloaded Snow Leopard and that did nothing.
Snow Leopard disks that came with the Mac Pro, or a retail copy?

  • Preview 5.01 won't display JPEG's after upgrade to Snow Leopard

Upon upgrade of Snow Leopard 10.6 I cannot open a jpeg on Preview that has been submitted by someone to me. It shows up in the side column but not on the main page. how do I get to see the image again? thanks!

There are several possible problems, one of which can be solved to by updating to 10.6.2. You can also try removing these two files:
    /Users/yourname/Library/Application Support/Preview/PDFIndex4.sk
    /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preview.plist
Then restart and relaunch Preview. If it still isn't fixed, and you are updated to 10.6.2, then you should download the COMBO updater and run it. There is a link to download it here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959
You can run it even if you have already updated.

  • JPEGS wreaking havoc with Leopard users

I have had serious problems in sending an email with a JPEG attachment to recipients who are running the Leopard OS. The email will basically make the recipient's Apple mail program, and sometimes the whole operating system, choke. One recipient had such a bad time he had to reinstall his entire OS in order to get up and running again. NOTE: The JPEG in question is a small file (176k), and had no problems being received by people running Apple OS 10.4 or earlier, nor any problems for those with PC/Windows platform.
As a workaround, I tried sending the image embedded as part of an HTML formatted email, but Leopard users (and again ONLY Leopard users -- all other recipients had no problems) received the properly formatted text, but the image (from the same original jpeg previously sent as an attachment) did not display. Ironically and interestingly, when Leopard users clicked on a link from the HTML formatted email, when viewing that URL in Safari they could STILL not see the same image on the web, viewing instead an empty box where the image should have been. When they went to the same URL in Firefox, the image displayed correctly. For anyone interested, the web page that will not display correctly for those using the Safari/Leopard combination is here:
    http://www.lernerphoto.com/content.html?page=5
Clearly there is some kind of problem with the JPEG and the Leopard OS/Apple Safari. No one else has any kind of trouble like this. Anyone have any idea what the bug is, and when/how it might be fixed?
    Many thanks for any feedback.

Yes, it is a new twist on the problem discussed for several pages here:

I used Firefox to grab your jpeg, the used HexEdit to open it. Sure enough, at the top was the exif information, including this:
Shahla and one of her daughters stand in their courtyard to remove their shoes before entering their mud-walled house. Many Kandahari women rarely leave home and live most of their lives within the confines of their compound walls. (Photo by © Paula Lerner)
--I had to remove some unrecognized characters to get the above to display correctly here
Once I deleted the exif data in HexEdit and resaved the file it opened fine in Safari and Preview.

  • Can't open my JPEGS after upgrade to Leopard.

I upgraded to Leopard about a year ago. It has been great so far except for one problem. I had a bunch of photos from work all saved as JPEG's in a portable HD and another backup drive. Now I can't open then with any software (i.e. iPhoto or GIMP). When you look at the files on finder the are shaded (like they have been selected when you are going to move or copy) and when you click on the photo the following message comes up: "The item "????.JPEG is in use right now and can't be opened. Try again when the current task (such as moving, copying or emptying the trash) is complete". I have also gotten the message that the photos are in use by another program. I have tried multiple things including copying the files to other drives including the Mac. You can open them in other computers and even open them on quick look, but again no luck opening them with any program on my Mac.

I don't remember the version of tiger but always keep it updated with downloads. I ran DU and the postable disk is a FAT 32 formatted hard drive so it won't run. I did the other things that you said and the following cam up. The image file is called "axial drawing.jpg" stuff the I edited out has a question mark "?":

  • I just installed snow leopard, now every file I try to download turns into a .ashx file...when they are pdf's and jpeg's

I was able to download any regular old document yesterday, normally - pdfs, jpegs, tiffs.... Now, when I try to download any file type, it saves as a .ashx....I just installed Snow Leopard yesterday and it's been doing it since then. It also does not even recognize the file name....just calls it "attachment(1,2,3,etc)"

So here is what else I've learned. First of all, the process of saving opened pdf documents used to work fine with Firefox. This new glitch did not occur before I down-loaded acrobat 10.1.6.
I went back and repeated the process of opening a pdf document from LexisNexis File & ServeXpress. When I clicked File > save as, I realized that it was prompting me to save as a text file. I had not noticed that before, and that must be why the saved document would not open, and I would receive a corrupted file message. (Again, this prompt did not exist in the previous version of acrobat).
The problem appears to be solved for me if I change the File > save as prompt to "All files." Saving it in that manner allowed me to successfully open the saved pdf document.
The other work-around is as follows. When the pdf document is opened in acrobat, there is an icon / button in the upper right corner of the opened document window that says "open with different viewer." If I click that, it lets me open in a previous version of acrobat, where the described problem does not occur.

  • Leopard has not ate may JPEG's, Adobe has.

Well almost 2 months after the release of Leopard and there is still a major compatibility issue with Adobe RAW (http://ns.adobe.com/camera-raw-settings/1.0/) and Leopard. The issues? Well quickly, the issue is that if your JPEG has the above information tagged to it it will crash the Finder. It will crash it in Preview, it will crash the Dock if there's a folder there with a "bad" JPEG, it will crash the screensaver if there's a folder with the "bad" JPEG and it will most likely crash anything that Leopard has to use if there's a "bad" JPEG in it. Has anyone out there found a fix or have any news pertaining to this issue?

I don't know if there's something coming in January or not. Apple doesn't really publish a schedule for when OS updates come out. That said, I doubt there will never be a 10.5.2

  • Importing photos to new imac leopard os (canon jpeg) trouble!

I am unable to import any photos to my new imac leopard os. I have tried using flash jumpdrives, CD's, DVD's, different brands of CF cards/readers. I have tried using images from all 3 of my canon cameras (rebel xt, 20D, 40D). The photos appear as if they are uploading, then when the system states finishing upload at end, the iphoto system closes down. I have taken the machine to my local apple store & the techs are unable to figure out the problem (they have updated all software & reinstalled it. They state it is not a hard drive problem) They were also unable to upload any of my jpegs to their leopard systems. I do not have this problem with my macbook pro laptop tiger os or my dell pc. Anyone know how to fix this!

    Photo Rock Girl
Welcome to the Apple user discussion forums
How are you trying to import? To iPhoto? Using Image capture? using a memory card reader? mounting your camera in the finder?
you mention many different media - flash jumpdrives, CD's, DVD's, different brands of CF cards/readers - how did you get your photos from your camera to a CD and a DVD?
If you can not read photos from any of these it is very strange. Can you download photos from the internet?
You might try posting in the iPhoto forum - http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=143 - the best photo gurus hand out there

  • Encode Motion JPEG Quicktimes with Snow Leopard 10.6.2

I know this is a common question, but I couldn't find a definitive answer that makes sense with what I'm seeing on my computer. I'm trying to make Motion JPEG A Quicktimes (in Compressor or QuickTime Pro) but that codec is not an option in my menus. I've read that the solution is to activate "legacy encoders" in the Quicktime System Pref, but on OS 10.6.2, there is no Quicktime System Pref pane. I have Quicktime X and Quicktime Pro 7.6.3. How do I make this work?

I don't know if you sorted this out yet, but thankfully it's quite simple. Open a Terminal window and enter the following, followed by the return key:
    +qtdefaults write LegacyCodecsEnabled yes+
    You should see the response:
    +Legacy encoders have been enabled.+
They rid of the QT preference pane in 10.6, so this is the back door method to achieve the same end.

  • How do I get the "jpeg to iPhoto" menu option in Snow Leopard?

in 10.5, there was a nifty little "jpeg to iphoto" option when opening photos. seems to have disappeared from menu options in 10.6. Anyone know a work around or if it's still there just somewhere else? It was one of my favorite things!

you are welcome! another option is to make a service using automator to import images to iphoto. it will be available in the right-click menu and might be useful for importing more than one file at a time. and of course you can always just drag the files to the iphoto icon in the dock.

  • Looks like Leopard ate my JPEG's.

Well after months, yes month's, of research the common consensus is that Leopard cannot properly interpret, read, process, however you may call it, some information written into xmp meta data of images brought into Leopard after having been used in Tiger. More specifically it can be narrowed down to this particular bit: http://ns.adobe.com/camera-raw-settings/1.0/ which resides inside the xmp.
Has anyone heard of a fix or work around to this issue yet?

This is the best page to understand exiftool:
    http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/exiftool_pod.html
I would start with this command:
    +exiftool -TagsFromFile <test>.jpg <test>.xmp+
The resulting .xmp file will have all the tags in XML format. You can look thru and see what specific XMP's are getting you into trouble.
To just get rid of all XMP tags issue the following:
    +exiftool -xmp:all= <test>.jpg+
Then see if you can use the jpg. If desired exiftool has flags for recursing thru files in a directory, and to overwrite the original jpg (the default is to preserve the original).
    Also take a look at:
    http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/TagNames/XMP.html

  • I WOULD LIKE TO ADD JPEG---CAN I IN OS LEOPARD?

--It's a nice touch to add the pix to the signature--- i hope leopard allows it along with a clear description on how to make your own Widget. Can't wait till it's ready---it's october---where is "LEOPARD"

You have to understand the difference between an Update and an Upgrade.
An Update is a free change to add to the base code or as a bug fix within an existing Operating System. Such as the .8 added to OSX 10.5 or the .11 added to OSX 10.4..
An Upgrade is a complete new Operating System that must be purchased. Such as 10.5 Leopard to 10.6 Snow Leopard.
10.5 Leopard was written for Power PC Macs with code added to force it to run on Intel processors.
10.6 Snow Leopard has completely rewritten code and only runs on Intel Macs.
10.7 Lion ($19.99) used some 32 bit which allows it to run on Late 2006 through Early 2008 MacBooks and a lot of 64 bit code.
10.8 Mountain Lion ($19.99) is pure 64 bit, which excludes more systems than Lion did. It can only run on the Late 2008 through Mid 2010 MacBooks. It's not something you can add memory to, for example, as it involves the base architecture.
10.9 Mavericks is pure 64 bit and is a free download from the App store.
The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. You can get it for $19.99. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard After you’ve installed that then download the 10.6.8 combo updater to finish it off. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399 You will need to be running 10.6.8 to access the App Store to order Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks which are downloads only.
    System Requirements for 10.6:
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible internet service provider: fees may apply.

  • My MacBook Pro can no longer read/play/do anything with DVDs. I tried re-installing OS and Leopard but discs are rejected almost as soon as I put them in. For some reason my computer is rejecting any and all DVDs.

A few weeks ago I noticed my MacBook Pro was unable to open or read, etc... DVDs. This included DVDs with jpeg photos on them and DVD videos. I thought I might have deleted something necessary to DVD use. So I tried to re-install OS software. This included Snow Leopard and the original two Mac OS X discs. None would open or play or install. All were spit out of computer soon after I stuck them in.
So now what can I do? Thank you.

Do you recommend the canned air
It works just as well as the regular cleaning discs works.  The only disadvantage is that you will need to keep purchasing canned air once it runs out.  Cleaning discs last forever or until the tiny bristles on the disc wears out.  Whichever comes first.
Any store that sells cds & dvds will also sell disc cleaners.  Prices vary but they all do the same thing - clean your slot drive.
