Leopard Junk filter works on one iMac, not on another?

My wife got her iMac on November 7th. It didn't come with Leopard pre-installed, a bit of a surprise but it came with a CD which I used to upgade her to Leopard. I got my iMac a month later. Leopard preinstalled. Now the question. In using her Mail, it didn't seem to learn anything. It was labeling as junk senders in her address book and regular much of the junk mail. I put in a trial copy of Spamsieve and it looks to work pretty good. I thought I would have to buy a copy for my iMac but decided to hold off and I started using Mac Mail. My filter seems to work fine. Catches all the junk, doesn't label anyone in my address book as junk. Why the difference? Our iMacs are identical except she had to upgrade from Tiger and I didn't. Our mail preference settings are identical. Our two email accounts are dot Mac and Yahoo. Since we are switching from PC to Mac, this is our first experience and its a learning one. So far so good. Except for this anamoly with Junk mail filter.
Anyone have any ideas? Please don't tell me to do a clean install on hers and start over with a clean Leopard install. Thanks

I appreciate your response and yes the Preferences are the same in the Junk Mail area including the Advanced. I didn't make real clear my underlying concern that this difference might be in some way due to an upgrade version of Leopard versus a clean install. Logically that shouldn't matter but we all know that just because something is logical doesn't mean it is correct. Since SpamSieve seems to be working as advertised, I'm hesitant to pull the trigger on it right now. It just seemed odd to me that she was having these problems with the Junk Mail filter and I didn't. Particularly when it was marking emails from her Address Book as spam and not just once. That shouldn't require a Baynesian whatever. And I think when I installed SpamSieve, it wiped out everything that the Mac Mail filter had anyway. I think. I was a bit hacked that I waited for Leopard to come out so I wouldn't have to go through an upgrade and then got it shipped with Tiger installed anyway a month after Leopard was released. Sorry, that would make this a rant and that's not my intent. If that upgrade versus clean is not the possible culprit, then I'll wait until her 30 day trial is over with SpamSieve, and decide from there. Thanks again.

  • Word import - hyperlinks work in one document, not in another

    Hi all,
I am aware that much has been written about broken links after importing, but there is a strange pattern to my problem I have not seen before.
I have three language versions of one document (English, French, German). So I set up three independent RoboHelp 8 projects and imported (linked) the corresponding Word documents. English and German are no problem, but in the French project, some (10%) cross-refs are not converted to hyperlinks. The involved titles have no accents, so it is probably not a character set problem. If I update the Word link or force update, it is always exactly the same cross-refs that are not converted correctly.
The cross-refs in Word look like this:
    {HYPERLINK \I " title "}
The cross-refs that do convert correctly have the same format, I see no difference between cross-references that work in RH and those that don't.
    Any ideas about this?

Sometimes, but it does not seem to affect the function. There are working links with spaces at the end.
On the other hand, there are strange things like this:
I have two chapter titles named "Système de désignation des modules de fonction" and"Système de désignation des connexions".
When I create hyperlinks, then Word inserts these fields:
    {HYPERLINK \l " Système de désignation"}
    {HYPERLINK \l " Système de désignation "}
-> The titles are cut off in the middle, the text markers differ only by an extra space. These hyperlinks work in Word, but not in RoboHelp.

  • Flash issues - works in one account, not in another.

Need help with any ideas on solving this issue.
I recently installed the latest official release of Flash Player 8. (8,0,24,0)
Then for some reason some sites doesn't display Flash content properly in Safari. My homepage for example (http://www.swedishboy.dk) doesn't work.
It sometimes loads the sound and the menu but not the "text" headline (it's text!!) nor the external swf file loaded into the first one. It all works smooth on Firefox and has worked on Safari before. In fact, on my fathers account on the very same iMac (G4) it works in Safari!!!
I've tried reseting Safari (bye bye all saved passwords), emptying cache, trashing Safari preferences, uninstalling Flash and installing it again (from my account) and still I get the same result. I give up. It seems to be a graphic issue with my account, any ideas?

    swedishboy,
This is what I have listed in my Safari>Help>Installed Plugins Menu:
    Shockwave Flash
Shockwave Flash 8.0 r24 — from file “Flash Player Enabler.plugin”.
What do you have listed in your installed plugins?
What results do you obtain when you check the Test Macromedia Shockwave & Flash Players link?
    ;~)
I just noticed that I have two of them listed...but the second one has a slightly different name:
    Shockwave Flash
    Shockwave Flash 8.0 r24 — from file “Flash Player.plugin”.
Perhaps someone else can explain that difference.

  • Gmail account works on one Mac, not on another

I have a late 2009 iMac and an early-model MacBook Air. Both were running the latest Mountain Lion; I updated both to Mavericks, so they are both running OS X 10.9 and Mail 7.0.
Before the upgrade, both Macs had a mail account. (It's the mail service for my ISP, but it's really just Gmail.) Mail worked equally well on both.
After the upgrade, Mail continued to work perfectly on the iMac, but it failed completely on the MBA. I get a warnint triangle next to my Inbox. When I click on it, Connection Doctor tells me that I have a good internet connection, but that it could not connect to either the Gmail SMTP server or the IMAP server.
I've checked every detail of the account settings from Mail preferences; they are identical. I've deleted and recreated the account on the MBA multiple times, from both the Mail preferences accounts tab and the System Preferences Internet Accounts tab. Nothing helps. Mail on the MBA is totally unable to connect to the Gmail servers, no matter what I do.
Here are some of the details:
    Account Information:
    Enable this account: checked
    Account Type: Google IMAP
    Description: Tellink IMAP
Email Address: ([email protected] (my ISP))
    Full Name: (my name)
    Incoming Mail Server: smtp.gmail.com
User Name: (same as my email address)
    Password: (my Gmail password)
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): Tellink (Offline)
    Use only this server: Checked
    TLS Certificate: None
    Edit SMTP Server List:
    Description: Tellink
    Server Name: smtp.gmail.com
In Use By Account: Tellink IMAP
    Use custom port: 465
    Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
    Password: (my Gmail password)
    Advanced:
    IMAP Path Prefix: (empty)
    Port: 993
    Use SSL: checked
Use IDLE command if the server supports it: checked

This was fixed by the upgrade to 10.9.1.

  • CS2 Works for one user, not for another

A friend has started getting the dreded "An  error has been  detected with a required application library and the product cannot  continue. Please reinstall the application."
I've found this problem listed a number of times in the forums, but none of them seem to have a solution.
He is on a Window 7Pro machine running 64-bit.
Reinstalling does not fix the problem and customer support will no longer help with a CS2 application.
He has compared the  C:\Users\Username\AppData folders between the primary user and the  others, but not clear which folder he should delete. Most  reference a specific applicaiton (like InDesign, Illustrator, PhotoShop,  etc) and this problem happens for every CS2 app.
He's considering backing up the whole  disk, then delete the user's profile, and then re-create it, and then  put back the documents, email, contacts, bookmarks, etc.  That's a  fair amount of trouble, but it should work.
Can anyone suggest an easier way?

Sorry, but even that is not guaranteed to work. CS2 is unsupported under Windows 7 and using it on a 64 bit machine adds a whole new level of complexity. It's time for your friend to upgrade. Troubleshooting this installation will be nothing but an excercise in futility.
It's also worth noting that CS2 is the earliest version eligible for upgrade pricing. You can save a few bucks along with free shipping on Amazon: http://amzn.to/h0SwTa
Your (and your friend's) call of course. But if really wants to stick with CS2 he should roll back to XP SP2. Anything later than that is a crapshoot.

  • I have CS6 and CC installed on my mac when I'm using CS6 and use bridge CC activates how can I set this to only work on one and not the other

I have CS6 and CC installed on my mac when I'm using CS6 and use bridge CC activates how can I set this to only work on one and not the other

If you want Bridge CS6 to open when using Photoshop CS6, you must quit Bridge CC.
Then File menu > Browse in Bridge will bring up Bridge CS6.
If Bridge CC is already open, The File > Browse in Bridge for Photoshop CS6 will use Bridge CC and Bridge CS6 will not open.
I hope that's the answer you were looking for.

  • SMS relay only works with one iMac or Macbook Pro, but not both?

I recently got a new iMac (5K). I already own a Macbook Pro 13" (bought in 2013). When I got the new iMac, I wanted to transfer all my data from my Macbook onto the new iMac, so I used the most recent time machine back-up from my Macbook to install onto the new iMac. No issues there. I also own an iphone 5s and ipad mini (1st generation), all with the most recent software updates. Approximately 1 week ago, SMS relay stopped working between my iMac and my iphone. I could type an SMS text message on my iMac, send it, and although it would transmit to the recipient, it would say "not delivered" on my iMac (it would show up as delivered successfully on my iphone). Consequently any SMS messages received would not show up on my iMac. I use the same login for my macbook pro and my iMac and for some reason my iphone stopped listing my iMac as one of the devices for SMS relay. I was on-line with Apple support for 3+ hours yesterday trying to figure out why this wasn't working. I did an SMC reset which temporarily fixed the problem, but as soon as I tried to use SMS relay with both the macbook pro and the iMac, the phone would only recognize one of them and ultimately always choose the macbook pro.
iMessage chats still sync just fine but the SMS chats do not any more. I was wondering if anyone else had the same issue, and if they did, are there any fixes?
    Thanks,
    Jon

Both the mini-displayport plugs and TB plugs are physically compatible which is why you can plug it in.   But if the iMac has a mini-displayport for video it won't work with the TB display.
Check your System Profile to see if it tells you whether you have a TB port.  And if there is no information about that post here or look up for yourself the kind of ports for that model of iMac.  System Profiler will give yo that information (click Hardware on the left).  From the model information it can be definitively determined whether that imac supports TB.
Also, so long as the Displays system preferences is not showing an Arrangement tab then it is not detecting the second display.

  • DVD Plays on one iMac/Not another

    I've got 2 iMacs running 10.5.6.
    I've created a DVD on a Sony RDR-VXD655 digital DVD/VHS recorder/player.
DVDs created on the Sony will play on one iMac and not the other. On the one it won't play on the recorded DVD shows up as a blank DVD. The problem iMac plays commercial DVDs just fine.
I've tried to see what video utilities I have on the iMac that works and transfer them to the one that doesn't, but no luck. The only thing I haven't installed is Final Cut Express.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks... DHK

Contrary to popular belief, burning at the highest speed(s) are not recommended.
Burn at the slowest speeds that the discs can use.
When I would burn video dvd's. The newer drives had no problems, but the older drives wold complian, and spit out the discs.
I burn at the slowest speeds, now all of my dvd players are happier.

  • Personal Web Sharing Works on One Mac, Not on Other

I can't get Personal Web Sharing to work with my MacBook Pro. It does work with my iMac. Yes, I can turn it on just fine on the MacBook, by means of System Preferences->Sharing, but I can't successfully use the Personal Web http:// link I see there as a URL in my iMac's browser. When I try, it tells me it can't connect to the host, i.e., the MacBook. When I do the same in reverse, from my MacBook browser with my iMac as target (though the local IP address and the short-user-name are of course different), the connection works fine.
I don't think I'm using an incorrect local IP address to try to get to my MacBook. I've checked that. And I do have an index.html file in the appropriate Sites folder on each machine.
I'm using Mac OS Leopard 10.5.8 on both machines.
The problem also shows up on Safari on my iPhone. It can access Personal Web Sharing on the iMac but it can't on the MacBook.
I wonder if it's a Bonjour problem? I don't exactly know if Bonjour is running on the MacBook, or how to tell if it is, or how to activate it if it isn't running.
Or, if it's not Bonjour, what could it be?

    Doug,
'sudo apachectl start' asked for my password and seemed to have no complaints after getting it. But it didn't tell me anything, and it didn't make a difference.
After checking out some FAQs at
    http://httpd.apache.org/
I tried 'apachectl -k start' and got:
(13)Permission denied: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80
(13)Permission denied: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80
no listening sockets available, shutting down
    Unable to open logs
It made no difference whether Personal Web Sharing was on or off in System Preferences when I did that.
I do know that the Apache log file is apparently not there where apachectl expects it. I don't understand the other stuff it said, but it looks like maybe it was trying to use an IP address of 0.0.0.0 instead of 10.0.1.16.
10.0.1.16 is the local IP address of my MacBook.
I tried 'apachectl configtest' and got 'Syntax OK'.
    I tried moving index.html to /Library/WebServer/Documents -- no help.
I tried creating a new configuration file in the way you said to try -- no help.
No matter what I try, I get:
    Unable to connect
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at 10.0.1.16.
I'm beginning to wonder if the Apache environment might not need to be reinstalled. But I'm not sure how. I'm running Leopard 10.5.8, but the original install disk I have is 10.5.1. Software Update moved me up from that to 10.5.8 over time. Your further thoughts and advice will be greatly appreciated ...

  • Drill Through to HFM Works for One Location, Not Another - Same Adapter

    Good morning all -
I have two locations that both use the same adapter to load to the same HFM application. One location produces the drill through files, one does not.
I've seen several posts about needing separate applications for multiple adapters, but surely this doesn't apply if the adapter is the same? Am I missing a location specific setting somewhere?
    Thanks in advance,
    Sarah

This was a stupid mistake on my part. I looked through the output and never saw the A, B, C files get produced, so I assumed it never worked. I failed to notice that we had also always had .err files, which prevents drill through files from being created. I answered my own question on the phone with Oracle support. :)
    Thanks for your response.

  • 23" works on One but not the Other

I have a Powerbook G4 1.25 GHz running 10.3.9 connected to a similar vintage 23" clear plastic case display with a DVI to ADC adapter connection and it works great.
My husband recently bought a used Powerbook G4 1.67 GHz running 10.4.8. We thought sure that when I was out of town with my computer he could hook up and enjoy the use of my big display, but no luck. It just gives him a blank screen.
Any suggestions as to why that would be? Does his machine require a different adapter? Is it possible his port is just not functioning?
    Thanks!
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   23 inch display

I couldn't remember what the Display Preferences had said when we tried this last spring and again in the summer, so tonight we connected it again, and wouldn't you know - it worked just fine. We didn't do anything different, so I have no clue as to why it worked this time but not before. He's thinking about getting his own big display, but didn't want to waste his money if he couldn't get it to work, so now I guess we're shopping for another 23" display - probably a used one. Thanks!

That's what I told a helper friend of mine, but he told me
    the POST is done
by the server, not the JS files. That's why, according to
    him, he couldn't
tell me what code to change in the .js files.
But here they are, if you would be so kind as to tell me WHAT
    to replace
with WHAT so the call is made properly. :-)

Those are the 3 files needed for the script.
Should I be banging on Dreamhost's door to fix something, or
    not? Because
the exact same 3 files will render an HTML page just fine
    over on

Which is the guilty party? The script, or the server config?

  • IPod Works on One Computer; Not on Other...??

iPod worked on both computers. Then something changed. Both run XP Pro; both have 7.1 iTunes. On computer that it does not work on, it does not show up in Device Manager either - no conflict shown, just no recognition that it exists...iTunes iPod diagnostics found it but shows its connection status as being failed. Other USB devices work fine and it used to work fine from the same port. No idea where to go from here...??? Already went through the uninstall/reinstall of iTunes; restoring iPod; etc. No icon down in system tray either that normally shows up telling me a USB device is connected - click to disconnect...

Note I said use the older machine in target display mode.  The reverse definitely won't work since a TB device cannot be connected to a mini-displayport source.
