Leopard Kernel panic - when rebooted main user account is gone

The title describes my problem well I think. My macbook running Leopard had a kernel panic. When I rebooted, the user account was gone. I booted from the Leopard DVD to reset the password, and reset the password of the root account and a mobile account - to which I have forgotten the password - with admin privileges. Neither one will log on. I'm pretty sure the mobile account will need the domain controller to successfully log on.
The root user I have never activated, so I suppose I can't use that. And without the ability to log in I can't seem to think of a way to activate it either.
There's a guest account available. And it works alright.

Will either of the two accounts log in while booted in safe mode (hold down the shift key at boot time)?

  • Snow Leopard Kernel Panics when trying to Force Quit Applications

I have been having this problem for about a month now. I am a heavy After Effects CS4 user so this happens to me primarily when working in AE, but definitely is not exclusive to AE. I am working on a 8 Core 2.66 GHz MacPro with 8 GB of RAM. The only other variables are an AJA KONA LSe capture card and a ATTO Celerity FC-41ES Fibre Card. The videocard is the standard ATI Radeon HD 4870. My drivers and software are all up to date.

    Hi Mike,
I have a very similar setup and am also using AE CS4 heavily. I am experiencing exactly the same issues, and have found that it is the multi-processing rendering app (aeselflink) that is causing the kernel panic when you force quit.
I have reduced the amount of times this happens by making AE only use 6 of the 8 cores available, in the Memory & Multiprocessing preference section.
I save my work before rendering or previewing and cross my fingers !

  • What is wrong with my user account?? Why do I get kernel panic when restart

Hi there. I got Leopard and was quite unhappy (don't think it was meant for a powerbook). So I started using Tiger again, and I flip flopped once or twice after the update came out for Leopard, thinking/hoping it would fix my problems. It didn't. I have given up on Leopard.
But, now Tiger seems to have a few problems of its own. I get the kernel panic when I restart my computer (telling me to restart), so I have to hold down the power button to turn it off and then turn it back on. Not a big deal, but if it shouldn't be doing that, I don't want it to, ya know? Never did it before Leopard.
My user account seems to be dysfunctional when it comes to downloading plug-ins for safari or firefox. I had to create a new user account and download the plug in from that account and then drag it into the HD to use it on my user account. I repaired disk permissions and booted from Tiger and did the same thing on there. After that, my user account is still not able to download that plug-in without getting errors (256)?
Is there a way to do a reinstall of Tiger from a blank slate, and be sure there won't be any problems?
    Thanks!

Leopard will work with your Powerbook, the question is, is all your software and hardware ready for it?
Is there a way to do a reinstall of Tiger from a blank slate, and be sure there won't be any problems?
You can start from a blank slate, but if you have a hardware problem that started to generate itself, a blank slate won't solve it. It is called an erase and install. The first thing to do is backup your data*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Once that is done at least twice, we can start looking at solutions for kernel panics*:

  • When i upgraded to Lion, it deleted my main user account and only left my guest account, how can i fix this?

My main user account was deleted, and only my guest account remained. I don't know my password for the guest account anymore, so i couldn't log in, i had to use my time machine to restore to the day before when i was on 10.6.7. How do i fix this?

I've stumbled upon the solution to get back into our machines.
At the login screen, when presented with 'guest account' only, do the following:
tap enter while holding down 'control' + 'option' + 'command'
...you should be reunited with your usual login personalities.
    Happy days!

    KeepItSimple:
If you're getting a kernel panic when trying to install, then I'd start with RAM and the installation disks.
RAM: Panther has higher standards for RAM than does 10.2.x; if you have more than one RAM module, take one out (assuming that leaves you with at least 128 MB) and try again. If it panics again, try switching the RAM. As far a brand names go, I prefere Kingston or Azen RAM.
Installation Disks: if they're grey, they won't work. Grey installation disks are packaged with specific Macs, and only contain hardware drivers for that specific Mac. You need the retail version of the disks, which were sold in a black box. There are four CDs in the set, three of which are for installing the OS (the fourth contains Developer Tools). The three OS disks are black with a large silver X in the middle.
    Good luck!

  • Kernel Panic when Updating from Mac OS X 10.3.9 to 10.4.7 Server Software

I tried updating our G5 Xserve with the 10.4.7 DVD. Since I have only a CD drive in the Xserve, I used a Mac Mini in target mode with the Server Install DVD in the MacMini DVD drive. Upon restart at the beginning of the install process, I get a Kernal panic.
I have a Village Tronic MPDDpro graphics card with latest drivers. 1 GB of memory. (I also tried using an external DVD firewire drive, but get the same kernel panic when Xserve tries to boot from the OS X Server DVD)
I was unable to get the xrdiags to provide any output. Tried unsuccessfully to get a Mac Mini running OS X Server to Netboot properly, so tried with xrdiags on a CD. Again no output back to the terminal administering the xrdiags start.
I tried putting the Xserve in target mode and installing the 10.4.7 from the Mac Mini. Install process went through successfully, but when I rebooted the Xserve, and before getting to the Setup Assistant, I got the Kernel Panic again.
Needing then to re-install 10.3, I reinstalled the 10.3 Server with the original disks and updated to 10.3.9 and reinstalled all the application software and setup users etc, (days of work) all went well with 10.3.9 Server.
I need to get up to 10.4.7 soon!
Any ideas what to do next?

Thanks for helping. I'm green at this! Getting definite experience as you can see, but can you help me with an actual real live make and model of a graphics card that is known to work on the G5 Xserve?
I called ATI re: their Radeon 9200, and was told by tech support that they do not support this card on the G5 Xserve. Yet, Scott Maiden, in his post above, referenced an ATI Radeon card.
What cards are being successfully used? Can I have a list?
Apple Tech Support will not give any such list. Maybe they know of some problem with all? (When I bought the Xserve in September of 2004, Apple Tech Support recommended the VillageTronic card.) The new, yet un-released Quad-core 64-bit Intel Xeon Xserve has "built-in graphics functionality, with mini-DVI output and support for industry-standard VGA displays," according to Apple's web site. Hopefully this will eliminate this type of problem in future releases of Xserve. But for the nasty here and now...
All I need is an inexpensive graphics card to administer this Xserve. Currently I am using a 21” SuperMatch SVGA monitor.
Thank to all who have helped.

The only cards I have found to work reliably in the
G5 XServe are the cheap-arse PCI models. I do not use
my XServe for serious graphics work so I do not know
how it works with other cards.
Can you swap in a known compatible PCI card for
    testing purposes?

  • Various process crashes prevent login to main user account

Here's a good one. I can't log in to my main user account; here's the recap:
Computer was acting slow and pausing a lot over past couple of weeks; I put it down to internet slowness at first, but after awhile I began closing down less-critical processes like .mac synchronization, mySQL, etc. Can't recall running any new installs recently, or updates, except perhaps Firefox.
Checked the logs, saw that my old pal mdimport was crashing repeatedly, like every 15 seconds or so. That will slow things down! So I turned off the Spotlight indexing for all categories, and eventually made the hard disk a private item. mdimport still crashing.
Ran permissions repair; some problems fixed, nothing too alarming in the logs (I think). Verified the hard disk; no problems found.
At some point the main account became unable to log me in. The login window accepts a password and disappears, but after a little while a blue screen appears, and the login window returns. I am able to log in using a secondary more-or-less virgin account on this machine, which seems to work fine.
Console logs reveal the constantly crashing mdimport, triggered anytime I attempt to log in using the main account. Secondarily, the loginwindow process is crashing on login (main account only) and crashdump itself is consistently crashing just afterwards. Occasionally another process called lsregister will crash at the login attempt, sometimes other processes too. More worryingly, there are reported IO errors from the kernel.
I've reset the pram, I've reset the nvram. I've booted from a 10.5 system disk and re-run disk utility for permissions and repair disk. I tried safe mode.
I've attempted to rsync my main user account to another computer while booted to target disk mode; rsync (running on the remote machine to which I'm copying the files) copies the many gigabytes in my Documents folder, but chokes consistently at some files in my Library ("former iDisk.dmg", App Support/firefox/profiles/etc, also some Growl files) with "Input/output error (5)."
Anyone have any good theories? Many thanks in advance.
    --David H

Thanks for your reply; I checked out the links but nothing seems too directly related. I'm vaguely aware of what mdimport does, but I certainly have seen it crash a lot.
At this point, I'm finally able to log back in to my main account, which (with some caveats/questions below) seems to be working.
To get back to this point, I used the terminal utility Applejack to clear caches, check plists for corruption, and clear virtual memory. I also manually deleted a loginwindow plist and some Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices/ files. Something in there seemed to help, and I'm finally back in to the main user account. There was definitely no getting into this account before I tried these steps.
    Applejack is found at http://applejack.sourceforge.net/.
I still have some troubling log entries, and some blips in several files. While subsequently backing up my user account, rsync consistently tripped on several files in /Library/Application Support relating to Firefox and Growl, in /Library/iCal, and also a couple of image files (out of tens of thousands) in my Pictures folder. So I deleted these files; the only concern so far is the iCal file which was called "corestorage.ics." And now that I've started iCal, it looks like I still have data; but my console log shows about 70 lines of "Calendaring data empty." Ugh. Nothing like losing data but not knowing what was lost.
Also troubling in the system log: I have several entries of "kernel[0]: disk0s3: I/O error" (though not in the latest reboot cycle). Hard to tell if these belong in the same category as the many cryptic and possibly alarming messages seen there, or if this is a real warning of a failing hard disk, or of other corrupt files the system is running into. Again, disk utility has repeatedly found no problems.
(Also I have several hundred entries of "/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/Metada ta.framework/Versions/A/Support/mdimportserver: _TIFFVSetField: tiff data provider: Invalid tag "Copyright" (not supported by codec)", which I hope relate to mdimport seeing many jpg images that have copyright metadata. I'm hoping that problem will go away now that they're marked "private" as far as Spotlight is concerned.)
At least I'm back in the account. I'm trying to decide whether to archive & install system 10.5; I'd prefer to reformat a misbehaving disk, but then you gotta have pretty serious confidence in your backups. Alternatively if the rumors are true I'm hanging on for one of the new laptops; I'd prefer that to replacing the hard drive again in this diabolical case. (Price you pay for sleek, I guess.)
    Time will tell.

Funky software simply crashes a thread but the system will continue on. Kernel Panics, on the other hand, often come from significant hardware and/or system software issues which cause an unrecoverable systemic error.
Basic trouble shooting for serious issues might go like this:
    FIRST AID
01 Completely shutdown, wait a 5 minutes, restart
02 Make sure you're not running out of free space on the System volume
03 Check/fix the filesystem using Disk Utility &/or Diskwarrior
04 Repair permissions using Disk Utility
05 Create a new user account, and see if the problem persists there
06 Clear system & user caches
    07 Run FCP Rescue
08 Unplug all USB, Firewire devices except Apple mouse
09 Startup in SafeBoot mode, and see if the problem persists there
    10 Reset system firmware
    MORE SERIOUS TROUBLESHOOTING
11 Reapply the latest combo updater
12 Run the Apple hardware diagnostic CD
13 Check the hard drive for bad blocks
14 Take out 3rd party RAM
15 Unplug 3rd Party PCI cards
    16 Reset PMU
17 Archive and reinstall the OS
18 Reinstall the system from scratch

  • Kernel panic when booting from DVD or external drive

    Hey Folks,
I have a 13" MBP, seems to run fine for the most part.
However, I can't boot from DVDs or external hard drives. Disk Warrior, my and a tech support buddy of mine's OSX Snow Leopard DVDs, and external boot disks all cause a kernel panic when selected from the alternate boot menu when rebooting with alt.

  • PowerBook G4 12" kernel panic on reboot.

    Hello all.
I've recently obtained a PowerBook G4 12" (1.33 GHz) and I've installed Tiger on it.
I noticed it kernel panics on reboot and not a shutdown THEN reboot. (or in technical terms, a "cold book.")
I've also tried installing Leopard on it, but it runs very slugishly, but here's the catch: It doesn't kernel panics on reboot.
Another thing is that the kernel panic is linked to the AirPort Extreme Card. I repaired permissions and ran AHT, no problems found.
Could anybody help me figure this out?

Can you post some of your crash logs? Might be a clue. See Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2546
Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html Also look at Tutorial: An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060309075929717
Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: Testing RAM @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc (the AHT is on the Install/Restore DVD that came with your Mac)? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • Kernel Panic when I try to install OSX 10.3. Can anyone help?

I bought this iMac recently. It has OS 10.2.? installed and OS 9.1. When I try to install OS 10.3 I get a Kernel Panic when it reboots to start the installation. I ran the Norton Disk Doctor it had over in OS9 -- said it fixed some things and now ok but I still get a Kernel Panic trying to install Panther. I just want to re-format the whole computer with 10.3 and get rid of 9. How can I do that?
    Thanks.

    Good luck!
    Andrew

  • Kernel Panic when I use hot corner to put display to sleep (twice)

As the title above says, for the second night in a row, my new iMac (2012) has had a kernel panic when I perform that action. I also turn off my magic mouse to save the batteries but I'm constantly doing both of these actions throughout the day when I know I'm not going to being using my iMac for some time. Both occurences happened on consecutive nights. Any help would be greatly appreciated

    SX-Virtual Link
    Soundflower
If the panic is recurrent, I suggest you uninstall them, one at a time, according to the developers' instructions, to see whether you can identify which one is at fault. A conflict between modifications may be involved. Reboot and test after each uninstallation.
Back up all data before making any changes.

  • Can't sync Centro (AT&T) with Outlook 2003 - on non main user account

    Hi
I have a Centro (AT&T) and Outlook 2003, Vista Home
Our main user account ("L*******) can install the Palm Desktop software from a CD (that came with the Centro in May 2008) and from PalmDesktopWin62.exe (72MB).
It ask for a user name of which I give it "K****" (letters removed on purpose). It ask me to connect the Centro and shows that it is using Outlook.  An Outlook email account is NOT set up on this user account on the laptop.  When I go to the HotSync Manager, it shows under Applications ~ Outlook, etc.
On user account (K*****) on same laptop, when I try to sync above phone, it asked to set up another account "K****" on this PC to which I reply Yes.  Then when it starts the HotSync it is using Palm Desktop as it has under applications ~ Date Book, Address Book,To Do List, Memo Pad instead of the Outlook name of Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, Memos.
I have done many hard resets on the Centro.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software from the CD & download several times also removing all the Palm OS files under all the user accounts on the laptop.
I've tried installing both methods of software under the main account (L****) and the secondary account (K****) both as adminstrators.
So my question: what am I doing wrong or can you only run an outlook sync from the primary account on a laptop?
Also, I'm currently running all of the above on another computer but only using the primary account and not having problems.
Thanks so much for your time!!!
    Post relates to: Centro (AT&T)

Ok it sounds like that you have a username setup on the device. Now to get this synced with outlook we need to delete the current account setup on the PC in Palm Desktop. First we need to setup a username called test. Once that is setup then delete the other account and then sync the device. Once the device is done syncing go to Start-->Programs-->Palm-->PIM conduit sync--> sync with outlook. Click ok then done. Then sync again.
To delete and add an account in the hotsync manager, open up the hotsync manger and select user accounts. Once in there click on add and type in test. Then click ok. Select the other username that looks like yours and delete it.

You probably  have the problem described at  http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4088
gfxCardStatus by cody krieger  may help by allowing you to keep the graphics set to one of the two modes
In any case : take it to Apple or an AASP & show them the report They should run a specific test with a simple pass/fail result shown on screen.
The three year period since purchase has probably passed; but nonetheless, if you're asked to pay, I'd call Apple customer service (or speak to the store manager ) & request that they consider your case. Several users here have previously obtained free repairs after doing so, even though outside the time limit. Here's a fairly recent one,

  • Can't add new Widgets to Dashboard on main user account

I recently switched to a new MacBook Air and after the initial intstallation used migration assistent to move my old data to the MacBook Air. All works fine except the Dashboard. With the old useraccount (which is my main account) I can't add new widgets to the dashboard. When I download and install a new widget I can see it in the /user/library/widgets section, I can see it in the widget list in the dashboard but when I click on it or drag it up to the dashboard it closes the dashboard again.
I tried adding a new user and in works fine in that new account.
Here's what I did to try and solve it sofar:
    1. Repaired permissions
    2. Deleted the two .plist's in user/library/preferences
    3. Deleted the Cache in user/library/cache
    4. Checked the folder permissions in /user/library/widget and compared that with the newuser/library/widget
    5. Downloaded the 10.6.6. combo update and reinstalled
This behaviour is with every new widget I tried to install.
I tried to find similar behaviour using google but so far no luck. Any suggestions?

You have hosed preferences in the main user account. Create a new admin user account, log into it, backup the bad account's folder, delete the bad account, selecting the save data option, recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated original account. If the problem's solved, open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving conflicts or identifying corrupt plist files is a laborious process. Good luck.
