Leopard killed my mini... HELP!  :_(

After many years of faithful service, I decided to give my mini (intel solo) a well deserved upgrade. I got Leopard from the Apple Store, installed, upgraded to the latest version (10.5.4), played with it throughout the weekend, and then, as I sat to watch a movie... it just sized up!
Frozen. Nothing will work. Oh well, nothing I hadn't seen before. Forced restart should sort it out.. Nope, frozen on the grey Apple screen... Lets have a look at Disk Repair from the DVD... Starts OK, runs OK, no repairs needed on the disk. Hmmm. Repair permissions... Nothing wrong there either, all permissions OK.
Restart Mini... same grey screen...
OK, so let's re-install Leopard, I've got plenty disk space...
Anyhow, after almost 3 hours, I decided to go to bed. It should finish overnight, after all, it says it has only 4 minutes left, even if it has said it for the last 30 min... give it time...
This morning, six hours later... still had 4 minutes to go. Installer FROZEN!
Now I don't have enough space left to re-install (only 2GB left).
So here come the questions:
1/ How can I set the Mini to Disk-Mode in order to free more space and/or copy some of my files? (I had pretty much everything backed up before I did the upgrade, but I was silly enough to but a few films from the iTunes shop; these weren't backed up...)
2/ I have two 500GB Iomega external firewire disks, so I thought I should be able to install Leopard in one of these and then access the mini's HD... The installer didn't allow me to do so, and asked to partition one as GIU-something... anyhow, as the two are identical (one is permanently mirrored into the other) I decided to erase one to install this new partition... but I couldn't find the option to install this particular kind of partition...
3/ If my mini ever goes back to life... should I go back to Tiger, keep to 10.5.0, or risk fate and go back to 10.5.4?
THANKS!

To answer your last question first, there are many people running Leopard quite happily on all varieties of Mac mini (and indeed far older systems) so there's nothing wrong with installing it again, and no reason to be reticent to do so if you like the features Leopard offers. It is worth saying however that if you were happy with Tiger, and liked the feature set of MacOS 10.4, Leopard doesn't really offer much in the way of enhancements, yet does typically require more RAM to run comfortably, particularly if you run multiple applications at the same time. If your Core Solo has 512Mb RAM and you run a lot of applications at once, or a number of old non-native software, you'd be better either increasing RAM to 1Gb or maxing out to 2, or returning to Tiger.
My guess is that when you installed Leopard, you performed the standard 'upgrade' install, and if so, that may well be the root cause of the problems you've had. This update path has created problems for many users, often the result of issues pre-existing on the system and which were largely hidden.
To back up the files on your mini before reinstalling, you can put it into Firewire target disk mode by holding 'T' down while booting while it is connected with a firewire cable to another Mac. That will mount it on the other Mac as an external drive and allow you to move files on and off it as with any other type of external.
What you then need to do is to reboot the mini with the installer (whether your existing Tiger or new Leopard installer is up to you) and then from the 'custom' install types, select 'Erase and Install'. This will wipe the internal drive of the mini and install a fresh copy of MacOS. That will resolve any outstanding drive/data issues, and give you a system that once completed, will be as it was when it came out of the box, including requiring the initial setup once again. Once that setup is complete, you can then reinstall your software and move your data back from the backups.

I need help need help installing snow leopard on mac mini 10.5.8 intel based so if u kno how pls message me thanks

You need to purchase the upgrade disk (it is a DVD). Then just put it in and run the installer. When it was first released it was $29 USD, do not know if the price has changed or not.
The usual precautions about backing up your data apply. In fact I would recommend either making a Disk Image of your current boot drive or using something like Carbon Copy Cloner to copy it to an external drive. I upgraded 5 machines from Leopard to Snow Leopard without any issues, but better to be safe than sorry.

  • Help requested for fixing Midi-reliant Widgets that Leopard killed?

While using Tiger, I had a couple of wonderful keyboard widgets that relied on Midi plug-ins to produce their sound. Leopard killed them. I have normal sound (I think) in all of my applications and non-Midi reliant Widgets, but anything Midi is dead and so is Finale Print Music, which won't even start up. Any guidance from the musical side?

I suggest you contact Finale and what other companies whose software you are using.
Leopard did not kill your widgets, they simply are not Leopard compatible and must be upgraded or newer ones downloaded. It's that simple.

  • Snow Leopard on 2011 mini?

Can Snow Leopard be installed on a new 2011 mini? Has anyone tried this?

Neil -- your reply is a deal-killer for me, just as I was about to click to finalize a high-end (I know, I know...) Mini order with the i7 and HD 6630M graphics, plus 8 gigs, etc.  Goal was to be able to run FCP X on the road without having to carry a MacBook Pro -- I have two and they are in some ways more problematic for me in running previous FCP than a Mini properly configured.
In fact, the question I was about to ask in this forum was, "Will the HD 6630M work properly on a 2011 Mini if I temporarily dump Lion and go back to Snow Leopard, pending some bug fixes and tweaks in Lion...?" You just mooted those questions, for sure. No purchase until or unless there's a way around this conundrum.
Anyway, I have been watching LOTS of pain in these discussions from folks running FCP X under Lion, and so I had planned to drop back to Snow Leopard immediately upon arrival of the 2011 Mini. Is incompatibility of Snow Leopard and 2011 Minis final, locked in stone, or situational and over-come-able? The no-Snow is in the specs and chip compatibility of the machine, a 64-bit-kernel gotta-have issue, or based on user experience...??  What breaks it?  Thanks...

  • My MacBook (10.5.8) is very slow and has significant problems loading will Snow Leopard (10.6.3) help or make my computer slower?

My MacBook (10.5.8) is very slow and has significant problems loading will Snow Leopard (10.6.3) help or make my computer slower?
Also why does my Macbook make so much noise (The noise concerns me because it is so loud it sounds like the laptop will break down or something at any point)?

It depends on your Macbook model how to open the bottom case.
Anyway you need to open up the buttom case or keyboard panel to access the CPU fan like following.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hHA4DDEvZA
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Core+2+Duo+Lower+Case+Replacement/537
If you think you can't do that by yourself, you'd better bring it to Apple Store Genius Bar or Authorized Servce Shop to tell them about the problem.

  • LEOPARD KILLS DRIVES

Im updating a MacBook Pro 1.83 GHz from 10.4 to 10.5 for a friend.
It read CD's and DVD's before I updated to 10.5...
Then guess what, All blank DVD's and DVD's that have been burned by myself DO NOT WORK!!
It spits them out. CD's are fine just DVD's....
LEOPARD KILLS DRIVES - I've just witnessed it.
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857
    HAEA
I have tried PRAM, SMC, a re-install of 10.5, the firmware update through terminal and giving it a good tap whilst the disc is inside.....A 10.5.2 upgrade does not work either.
USELESS. It's also pathetic that there are so many complaints yet nobody from Apple can hold there hand up and say there will/may be a forthcoming solution. Just people who have forked out a lot of money to get the silent treatment. Perhaps thats why they drives are done away with... Get a Macbook Air!!

Of course...AHT, - not thinking, I haven't run an AHT. But I had done all the usual Repairing permissions etc. The drive was zeroed and repaired before I installed Leopard, and then when the drive went cuckoo - I re-installed Leopard again.
It's been given back to my friend now.. He has everything updated and reinstalled and everything is working nicely for him apart from the drive. I'd also just done his iMac 20" - no problem.
I have leopard myself, no problems. But I have a later machine (see below).
Just seems funny theres a lot of coincidence in similar posts...
It's just very annoying that these issues arise and are not always addressed.

  • Help,  leopard killed my mail!

I just installed 10.5 leopard on my Macbook. When I ran mail, I get the following warning in duplicate..and as I close the warning, mail crashes and I get a window asking if I want to relaunch it, which I do and then the same thing happens. Any suggestions?
Some actions taken while the account “https://mail.hostedexchange.dk/exchange/” was offline could not be completed online.
Mail has undone actions on some messages so that you can redo the actions while online. Mail has saved other messages in mailbox “Sent Items” in “On My Mac” so that you can complete the actions while online.
Additional information: The IMAP command “APPEND” (to Sent Items) failed with server error: Invalid mailbox name..

Okay, for anyone else who may be reading this post with the same problem, here's how I worked it out.
Thanks to one of the posts above I found this Apple Support article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306857
Application Enhancer seems to have been the problem in my case. I used option A. I connected my desktop mini system to my powerbook via firewire, booted powerbook in target-disk mode by holding T. Removed the APE file and the powerbook rebooted right into the new Leopard installation.
But now I'm going to backup what I need and do a fresh install anyway, to avoid any other potential problems with old incompatible applications.

  • Just Upgraded to Snow Leopard and ruined Logic - Help!

I'm running Logic 8, NI Komplete and Reason 4.0.
All was dandy under 10.5.8. Upgraded to snow leopard last night and all apps were fine....except logic.
I opened logic and it went to rescan all the AU. Fine, let it go a few mins but seemed to be hanging, so force quit. It gave me an error that logic encountered an issue with the Rewire plug in. That may be what caused the hanging.
This happened a few times, so I googled for answers and did the following.
    - Deleted Logic Preferences
    - Tried to start holding control to bypass AU (didn't start)
    - Reinstalled logic (twice, once plain and the second time after trashing receipts)
Now, logic just bounces in the dock many times, no splash screen and then just stops bouncing and no launch. Have to force quit.
My instruments, loops etc are on another drive so when i reinstall it's just logic. Also my disks are for a L7-L8 upgrade version.
I saw another closed thread where beejay had helped someone resolve this, but no real answers there.
Can anyone think of something I haven't tried (other than full clean install of Snow Leopard) that might work?

Hey Eriksimon or Bee Jay, need your help! Almost the same problem but worse... I don't have a timed backup
I'm running Reason 3 through Logic 9, didn't even realize I had melodyne until I searched my hard drive after I installed SL and Logic stopped working... (Logic just bounces in the dock or else crashes on the splash screen)
I deleted Logic Preferences and most of my AU plugins preferences, and Melodyne completely

  • I just killed my Mini !

Tonight I plugged in my USB2 pocket HDD to my Intel mini and it just shut down !
now the HDD will not power up tried on another machine but worst of all my beloved Mini has pegged out too !
    What I've already tried :
Unplug everthing from Mini and leave it for an hour - nothing
Open it up and press 'reset' button - nothing
Changed fuse in plug - nothing
So have I killed it ??
    Full spec :
Feb 06 intel mini 1.5 solo (heavly upgraded)
    2Ghz Dual Core CPU
    2GB Ram
    500 GB HDD
    OSX 5.8
    HELP
    Custom mini

Oh dear, over 100 views and no reply this is not looking good !
Ok so I was in a bit of a flap when I posted, so will try again with more info.
All the below has been done time and time again over the last 1.5 yrs.
My pocket HDD has a power supply of it's own as the Mini cannot run it on bus power only - so as usual I plug in the HDD power supply I feel the HDD spinning and the little light flashed on all as usual I then plug in the same USB lead I always use into the HDD and as soon as I plug it into the Mini's USB the Mini shut down nothing on screen no sound just shut down dead - so there you have it and it will not do anything now at all.
    Custom mini.

  • IMac G4 superdrive only reads DVDs after leopard install, not CDs-- HELP

I just installed leopard on my iMac G4 and now it only reads DVDs. It will not read CDs. I tried installing iLife and Office from CDs and it does not read them. However, it will play all DVDs just fine. Leopard itself seems to work amazing, only problem so far is the CD issue.
Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know how to fix this? I would really like to be able to read CDs as well. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Same thing here. Superdrive keeps behaving erratically since Leopard upgrade. Doesn't burn DVDs (some error message saying it doesn't recognize the media). Managed to burn a CD only after full PMU reset but doesn't read CDs anymore (burnt a blank CD on a iMac at work and my mini says the CD is blank). Reads movie rental DVDs ok though (but I don't care, I just want it to work).
Same sort of thing happened to me last year whilst running Tiger. Apple changed the Superdrive. That very model of Superdrive is a piece of rubbish and it looks like Apple will have to change it again. Very glad I tool the 3-year Applecare warranty.
So much for the "it just works", hey?.

  • Convert Snow Leopard server mac-mini to basic Snow Leopard Mac-Mini?

I have recently purchased a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard Server installed.  I have decided not to use it as a server and just maximise its capacity by using it just with Snow Leopard.  How do I reformat to install basic Snow Leopard software?  Thanks

Without an optical drive of its own, a Mini Server model would require the use of an external optical drive capable of supporting OS X installation and booting. This could include another Mac capable of supporting Target Disk Mode and the use of the second computer's optical drive. Or a supported external optical drive.
Another question may arise in the fact you would not be able to use an older OS X install disc older than the version shipped with the computer; the date of the Snow Leopard version's retail install disc would have to be newer than the SN OS X 10.6.x install DVD the machine shipped with in order to use it.
There may be a way to do a Custom installation from the Snow Leopard Server version DVD you have. This would likely be the best bet if possible. Given the higher level tools and processes available to the Server version of OS X Snow Leopard, being able to use that is a better preference overall than Client version.
You may be able to upgrade an internal hard disk drive to a larger capacity unit, or get and use a supported externally enclosed hard disk drive capable of supporting OS X booting and clones; these options could expand the basic use of the computer no matter what version of OS X you have running within it. Later on should you decide to experiment, a second drive for dual booting 10.6. & 10.7 could be a way to go forward.
The accessory use of a more dedicated external optical drive for the Mini Server edition is recommended; as well as the use of an external enclosure for an additional hard disk drive for backup purposes.
Depending on the version of standard retail Snow Leopard install DVD you may have, the ability to perform an Archive and Install should be available to you. Or perhaps a custom installation to nullify some of the more advanced parts of the Server version may be a possibility to investigate. I'd read up on what advantages a Server version of OS X can provide you, before leaving it.
When Lion 10.7 arrives, if your computer is supported, it should be relatively easy to upgrade & install the standard version (vs Server) via an upgrade where you keep user account settings etc from the previous OS.
    Anyway hopefully this helps...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Snow Leopard killed my vga displays!!

This is by far the most weird problem I have ever encountered after upgrading to a new OS.
I run a company where we have something like 15 different Macs. Mostly Intel, but different ages, Mac Pro, Macbook Pro, iMacs, Mac Mini etc.
A couple of days ago I wanted to upgrade one of the Mac Pros to Snow Leopard. It's an early 2008 3.1 with ATI hd 2600 graphics. I wanted to do a clean install, but instead of backing up everything from the system drive, I pulled it out and put in a new clean one. This way I could retrieve the data from the old drive when I need it through a USB docking station or something.
Installation went by fast and without any problems what so ever.
But first thing I noticed when the first bootup was completed was that the resolution of my monitors were suddenly completely wrong. I have two Samsung Syncmaster 2343nw monitors connected through vga, and they have always been detected and automatically been set to the correct resolution in the display preferences dialog by the old Leopard. I have around 9 of these monitors working as dual displays on Leopard machines, and a few working as extra external monitors for a couple of Macbook Pros running both Snow Leopard and Leopard. They are all connected via an dvi to vga converter and they always get detected correctly as "Syncmaster" in Display preferences.
But suddenly now, they just show up as "VGA Monitor" in Display preferences.
After fighting with this for a couple of hours trying all the suggested workarounds I could find, zapping PRAM deleting /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist changing the cables and so on, I finaly gave up. Fortunately I didn't overwrite the old Leopard installation so of cause I could just swap the drives back and everything should be dandy after booting back into the old Leopard install.
But **** no! Now the resolution was equally messed up in Leopard! And none of the two monitors were detected as "Syncmaster" in display pref. Now they only show up as "VGA Monitor" as they did in Snow. ***?? How can an OS mess with a monitors plug 'n' play capabilities?
I then tried the obvious which was to try and reset the monitors, remove power from them, Zap the PRAM again. I even tried a different graphics card (that didn't work in this machine) but what ever I did, the monitors where no longer detectable by the OS.
Next step was to take some identical monitors from a different machine. And yes, they where detected by Leopard on the problem machine. Since I couldn't believe that Snow had actually ruined the other two monitors I booted back into Snow hooping that it would now detect these other identical monitors. But no, same problem. Back to Leopard, and once again now suddenly these couldn't be detected by Leopard either.
I have since tried these monitors on all the other Macs I have in the company, and only one machine with an nVidia card is able to detect them correctly as Syncmaster. But none the less also this machine isn't able to see the monitors native resolution thus making it impossible to select the right setting for the monitor.
So now I have 4 monitors that's virtually unusable after being in contact
I have read a lot about people who who suddenly can't use their secondary monitor after upgrading to Snow Leopard and that Apple is aware of this, and that 10.6.4 should address this problem when we finally get some new graphic drivers. But I haven't heard about anybody who's monitor lost it's plug 'n' play capabilities after being in contact with Snow Leopard.
But maybe someone here has had any similar experience? Maybe somebody else has had luck with upgrading a dual vga monitor system to Snow Leopard? I would love to get some ideas on what happened since these monitors doesn't really work anymore on any computer.
    Thanks!

Hmm... I know that the screens native refresh rate is at 60 Hz and the resolution is 2048 x 1152. I'm unable to check it out now but I'm pretty sure I can't select 60Hz. They only have VGA connectors (the same as D-Sub I guess?) And the closest I can get to the right resolution is 1920x 1280 (or maybe it's 1200, not sure) which looks almost right, but then again not, and a whole lot more fuzzy than it used to be.
On some machines the displays are detected as "Display" and on others "VGA monitor" or "VGA display". It's supposed to detect as "Syncmaster". Nothing changes if I press "Detect". I've only tried on machines running 10.5.8, and one brand new iMac running 10.6.3 through a display port to vga converter.
But thanks for link to the toms article. I'll give it a read

  • Installing Snow Leopard on Mac Mini Server

I recently purchased a 1Tb 4Gb Mac Mini Server, running Snow Leopard Server. I want to use it as a central repository for my other macs: storing music, movies, backup, screen sharing (it's hooked up to my 32-inch TV) but I also want to be able to run Logic Pro, Ableton Live, etc. I also have a Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard Client, which contains all of my programs, plugins, data, etc. I realize that Snow Leopard Server does not have migration assistant, so I have tried to install a retail copy of Snow Leopard onto the secondary drive, but when it gets to the restart stage it crashes every time. I think this is a firmware issue, because the Mac Mini has a different hardware configuration to other macs. I do not have access to the mid-2010 Snow Leopard Client for Mac Mini which would allow me to install Client and use migration assistant from there. What I would like to know is:
1/ Can I manually migrate my plugins/settings/programs to the server? If so, how? What is most crucial (and what I don't understand) is copying my audio units and audio programs (e.g. Logic Pro, Pro Tools). Because of the firmware issue, it seems more difficult than cloning my MacBook Pro to a time machine HDD and running from there... I would really like to purely clone my MacBook Pro, because I am very happy with the way it is set up.
2/ Should I just wait for OSX Lion (July/August) which seems to be a combined server/client os, install that on both machines and run migration assistant from there?
3/ Is there another method I can use? Something I am overlooking?
    Thanks in Advance.

Thanks for your reply. I talked to the Apple Support again and they told me the server edition could only be used on that OS and if I wanted to use it as something else I could chose not to use the server applications, or buy a regular Mac mini. And that was all they said. Interesting since it was one of their sales persons who told me I could install Snow Leopard.
Anyway, I got hold of a client disc and it all worked like a charm.
