Leopard Latency?

Hello. Unlike the recent post concerning rendered files disappearing: I am having the opposite problem of rendered files appearing. E.g., I render out a 16bit tiff file and if I import back into Shake, the file is empty. If I try to import into photoshop I get an error message stating " could not complete your request because of a problem parsing the tiff file". Sometimes, after time passes, anywhere from a few minutes, a few hours, overnight or even a couple of days then the problem goes away- that is I have no problem in opening the file. Other times, this does not happen and the files is useless. Also, this normally does not come into play if a write out a jpeg or exr file but the issue appears to be more centered around tiff and iff files. I have written out zillions of files from Maya and Photoshop and do not have this problem with those programs. As this is effectivley crippling Shake for me I will name my first born after the person who has a solution to this problem.

Just to elaborate a bit more, data is written to the file when the FlipBook is closed so you should always close it before using the file in another application. I guess the data suddenly appeared because you had closed the FlipBook later on.

  • Snow Leopard - Latency issues when waking from sleep

I own two macs ('09 mini and unibody macbook), both of which connect wirelessly to an airport extreme N router. Since upgrading to Snow Leopard I have been dealing with terrible latency issues when the computers wake from sleep. Ping times from local servers increase from around 23ms to 220ms and webpages load slowly. A quick reboot solves the issue. Connecting directly to the airport extreme with a patch cable also solves the latency issue so I know it's just with wireless.
Has anyone else experienced this problem since upgrading and, if so, what are you doing to solve the issue?

I use Ethernet so I cannot comment but have you tried trashing the airport pref.plist and removed the preferred networks in the network set up in System Preferences and then set up the wifi connection again?
This seems to help with a lot of airport problems on this forum.

  • Wireless latency/slow ping problems in Snow Leopard

After upgrading to Snow Leopard (SR MBP), I've experienced unusually high and unpredictable latency from the airport connection. The Ethernet connection works fine (consistent and short ping times to the wireless router), but the airport connection's ping times vary wildly. My computer is within a few feet of the router and a computer running 10.5.8 further away has no such difficulty. See example: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/amusiccale/Screenshot2009-09-05at101600AM .png
Running Ubuntu from a live CD, no such ping problem exists and the wireless connection works great, immediately out of the 'box': http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/amusiccale/Screenshot.png
Likewise, the problem does not appear from the Snow Leopard installation cd when I run network utility.
A different MBP (unibody) on Leopard does not have this problem with the same router (so it seems unlikely that the router is at fault), and I did not have this problem before my upgrading.
I have attempted deleting preference files for the wireless adapter without success. I have reinstalled snow leopard in place, making me wonder if the issue is the design/driver rather than an installation issue.
Programs I was able to use before in Leopard (such as Skype) that require a steady stream of information are now unusable.
How can I fix this issue?

    Hardware:
    17" Powerbook G4 1.67GHz with 2GB ram
    System:
    10.5.4 Leopard
*Ever since i upgraded to Leopard, i have noticed tremendous latency / pinwheel issues in many areas such as:*
    1. Switching between running applications hangs up sometimes as long as 15 seconds
    2. Video playback in quicktime is choppy
    3. Various programs take a tremendous amount of time to open
    4. Opening relatively small illustrator and or photoshop files pinwheels for unusually long time
    5. Opening finder windows unusually slow
One of the MOST frustrating of all issues:

*Overall, the entire computer feels VERY sluggish*
i have tried clean installs, as well as regular maintenance... and upgraded my RAM to the max of 2GB
Is there anything else i can do? Anyone else having similar problems and or know the best way to repair?
DESPERATE for a solution here... while i realize the G4 can only handle so much, i just feel like it cant possibly be this slow under leopard... or can it?!

Have you run the Apple hardware test? One of the tests is to specifically test the fans.
*Overall, the entire computer feels VERY sluggish*
How much free disk space do you have? You need 10% to 15% free for systems usage. Less than that an performance can really slow down.
If you bring up the activity monitor, under system memory, what does it say for page ins and outs?

  • Definite Latency / Lag with Snow Leopard

Hi - I just wanted to post my experience trying to figure out why on earth I was suddenly experiencing such terrible lag/latency on my Mac and how I figured out it was Snow Leopard. I had recently upgraded to SL, but didn't immediately make the connection.
Initially, all I knew was that I had terrible lag even while my boyfriend was using the same internet connection through a Belkin router (on a PC), and did not have any lag at all.
    We tried the following fixes:
    - Rebooting the router/modem
    - Rebooting my computer a ridiculous number of times
    - Repairing disk permissions
    - Repairing disk
    - Changing DNS settings to google's open DNS (note: this seemed to fix it for a couple weeks, but the problem returned)
    - Flushing cache
    - Changing other settings suggested by people on other posts
    - Doing a bunch of terminal commands, including sudo killall mDNSResponder
    - Reinstalling Snow Leopard
    - Trying to connect using a neighbor's wifi (I still had lag w/ this, and my boyfriend did not.. another indicator that the internet itself was not the problem)
Finally, I decided this was probably a hardware issue and purchased a new Macbook Pro. This did NOT solve the problem; almost immediately I had terrible lag again (note - this lag happened while I was surfing the web, but was most noticeable while gaming online).
At this point, my boyfriend and I had tested almost every possible theory: internet connection, hardware, software bug, dns, etc... The only possibility remaining (unless there was some kind of intrinsic problem with every Macbook pro) was Snow Leopard. Googling this issue resulted in plenty of posts about some networking bug with snow leopard.
And so, we figured out how to work Bootcamp and installed my online games through it and POOF - problem GONE. I now surf the web and play games through Bootcamp. I really hope Apple comes out with a fix for this. It seems pretty extreme to have to switch to a different OS to solve lag problems.

We have the same problem. Brand new MacBook Pro, old XP PC with cheap wireless card. The PC has ming of 12ms at pingtest.net, the Mac runs at 40ms. (OK, suddenly, with no changes here, the Mac has pings of 1200+ms. I hope that passes.)

  • Midi Latency with G4 1.25 Mhz, 2 GB Ram, GB 9, Leopard

Recently upgraded to Leopard/Ilife 09... I'm getting intolerably midi latency with an external midi controller, motu 828 firewire midi/digital audio interface, recording a GB software instrument. This system worked cherry with 04/Tiger. Is the new GB/Leopard so heavy with all the Intel support that it cannot even run on my good old G4 PowerPC?
We're talking single track, no other apps, internal drive... should I not expect this HW to have enough cycles for this? Apple advertises complete GB 09 ( other than "lessons" ) support for this system. Seems like something is very wrong...

garage band simply will not run properly on this hardware w/ leopard.

  • Video Latency Issue On The Mac Book Pro 2.4 With Leopard 10.5.5

Gear: Macbook Pro (early 2008 model) - 2.4gigs cpu 2gigs ram - all the latest updates... no other applications running during the test
Hi folks. Currently I am having a latency issue when trying to record directly into iMovie using the built-in microphone and iSight camera. Basically, the video seems 5 - 7 frames late to the audio. I found that a good way to demonstrate this issue was simply doing a few handclaps as a test.
This is a quick handclap test displaying some video latency during recording with the iSight camera in iMovie 08.
    - Just download this link — and import it into iMovie 08 - Here is a link to a zip file that you can import into iMovie 08 - It's 2.5meg - .m4v export - Also it was recorded as standard format and audio midi setup app: audio was set to 44.1:
    http://www.brainbeast.com/37/clap-1-large.zip
    - Play from beginning. As soon as you hear a clap sound — pause with the space bar - then back up before the clap with the left arrows
    - Then click the right arrow several times until you hear the beginning of the clap sound ( This is the audio: start frame)
    - Now — you will notice the video still has an open hand. At this point click the right arrow, counting as you go several times until you see the hand close. This is the amount of frames that the video is late to the audio. For me it seems to be an average of about 5-7 frames late.
Unfortunately iMovie 06 nor QuickTime will not scrub audio as you go frame by frame with the arrow keys so you cannot test it there. If you have some other application such as final cut Pro, you could test it with that.
! IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO PERFORM THE TEST YOURSELF:
    - Just record a new movie in iMovie 08 - using the built-in mic and i-Sight camera — and see if it is also slightly out of sync
Note: to be as fair as possible — I did a slow handclap ( in order to not challenge the frame rates) - also, in order to get the maximum volume I used an open palm ( clap on the palms with your fingers spread out as you can see I did.)
Please let me know if this latency appears to be the same for you as it does for me.
Q: Is it just my machine or does it happen to you too?
Q: Does anyone know a way around this latency issue?
Q: Does anyone know if Apple is aware of this latency issue?

I am experiencing the same incredibly frustrating problem as well. When I record directly into iMovie
'08, the video lags the audio by a fraction of a second.
I have tried shutting down all other applications and having only iMovie up. Same problem.
I tried recording the video into QuickTime instead of iMovie and experienced the same problem. (Which makes me think it is perhaps a hardware or operating system issue.)
I tried the technique suggested here and on other sites of "double-dragging" the clip from the Events pane into a project (one normal drag and one Shift+Cmd drag) so that I had the audio and video as two separate tracks. After muting the audio on the video track, I then attempted to slide the audio over to sync it with the video, but even down at the 1/2 second zoom setting I didn't seem to have enough granularity to move the audio so that it was exactly in sync with the video. I was wishing I could use the arrow keys or something like that to move the audio just one frame at a time.
All I want to do is record a video directly into iMovie '08 - this would seem to be something trivial to do!

  • Safari loading pages slowly / high latency

I have recently been asked by one of my clients to look at a problem with their 3 macs at their place of business. They are an iMac, a macbook and a macbook air. They have all started to exhibit the same problem of being slow to load web pages using safari as their web browser of choice.
Using the broadband speed test at speedtest.net shows that they are getting some extremely high latency (~4000ms) to some sites.
I have tested the broadband connection thoroughly using my own (linux) laptop and everything seems to be in working order. Tests on the macs themselves using a terminal show that latency to the internet and dns response times are all as they should be.
From some limited searching the problem appears to be similar to the problem described in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8799710&#8799710 where safari itself is causing some problems for some reason.
What I'm looking for is some suggestions on how i can go about fixing the problem when i next visit the client

    Welcome to the forums!
The following usually works on both Tiger and Leopard:
(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl.)
Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(An explanation of why that is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 / )
Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:
This is Apple's guidance on iPv6:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8708.html
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.

  • Latency, here we go again...

So if I were to buy a Mac Pro (4 or 8 core?)...
    with 8GB ram
    and the Apogee Duet
and I worked only with VIs and Samplers...
except for my Vocals (average 6 tracks per song)
but i only record my vocals one track at a time
but i like to record my vocals with the soft plug-ins running (especially compression & reverb)
however my session can get big (i.e. 60 tracks totally pimped out hard)
    so the questions are:
can i achieve a happy latency to record my vocal tracks with?
would you specifically recommend or comment on the following:
model of mac pro (4 or 8 Core?)
amount of ram (i am thinking 8GB)
i/o interface? (better than duet for home recording latency?)
any other suggestions other than going PCIe PT HD?
    thanks

*Unless you are going to run huge EXS libraries on virtual memory or standalone instances of Samplers/Sample players 8 Gigs of RAM doesn't seem to make much sense. If you are on Leopard which is 64 Bit and only use 3rd party plugs which are also 64 Bit then you will benefit from more RAM.*
I'm assuming then, that you are saying both EXS and 3rd party are BOTH 64bit and therefore, the best way to safeguard myself if i WAS to decide to use alot of these, is to definitely go 8GB - is this correct?
*I am very happy with my 8-core, Logic uses them all 8 and I haven't had an overload message in months even running big projects with 60+ Audio/Softsynth tracks and plenty of Fx plugs. Make sure to get at least 2 internal SATA drives and a fast external one as well.*
that's awesome, at least i know the 8 core will serve me well - can you please explain to me what you use the 2 internal and one external SATA for specifically...
i have been thinking for my Mac Pro:
internal 1: 500GB SATA: OS, Appls etc
internal 2: 500GB SATA: Sessions, Audio Files
internal 3: 500GB SATA: Samples, VI Patches
    internal 4: 500GB SATA: Video, Photos, MP3s
2 x 1 Terabyte External Firewire 800 Drives: Backup Everything
*As I monitor my live recordings through my desk and don't use Software monitoring I can't really speak about the latency. I can say that I can run most of my big projects on buffer sizes like 64-128. If a lot of NI Kontakt instruments/Multis are involved I have to go up to 264 sometimes as Kontakt doesn't really support Multicore processing unless you set your buffer to 1024 which doesn't really work for me.*
I suppose this is irrelevant to me as i'd prefer not to use an outboard mixer - i'm a bit more interested in those monitoring solely through their duet (or similar or better) device with software fx (mainly compression & reverb) added
    thanks

  • How do I remotely access my Snow Leopard server from my Mountain Lion MacBook Air

Does anyone know of an idiot's guide to setting up a VPN to access my server? I'm running Snow Leopard server in the office and I'd like to be able to access the server, probably just from one computer (MacBook Air runnung Mountain Lion) from home.
I'm not sure if it complicates things or not, but the office is in an area with poor broadband and so the internet connection is via satellite broadband. The set up is a satellite modem into a Gigabit router and the server is connected to the router via an unmanaged switch.
As an aside, I'm considering changing this set up so that the modem plugs into a Time Capsule and the server will connect directly into the TC. The desktops will then run into the server via the unmanaged switch or wirelessly via TC - any thoughts on the best set up here? Are cables into a switch better/worse than using TC's wireless facility.
Is this something that I, as a reasonably competent computer operator but definitely not an IT expert, could do, or should I get someone in to set it up for me?
    Thanks in advance
    Jim

VPNs aren't particularly special or weird or secret or such.  They're "just" a network connection.  A sometimes very fussy network connection, but a network connection.
My preference is to use a firewall that includes an embedded VPN server.  This for several reasons, as it avoids trying to forward the VPN through a device that's using NAT [1], and it means you can connect to multiple devices on the target LAN, and you can connect even if the OS X Server box is down.
Other folks will forward the VPN through NAT, and use the VPN server that's available in various versions of OS X Server.
Forwarding a VPN through NAT does work, but can also sometimes not work.  NAT can cause some types of VPNs to get tossed off when (for instance) there's a second VPN connection arriving.
In various cases everything connects and works the first time, and in other cases it's trial-and-error.
With a VPN-capable firewall (which is a step above your average residential firewall), usually configuring the firewall as a L2TP server or the Cisco protocol, if you want to use the standard OS X or iOS clients.  Or PPTP — which is easier to get working — but less secure.  Once the firewall and the VPN server is set up — and that's where most of the "fun" is — then the set-up in Network Preferences is (usually) pretty simple.
There are thousands of OS X VPN set-up articles around, but the details all hinge on the particular VPN server, and whether you're going to try to push the VPN through (for instance) that Tome Capsule and its NAT.   Until you sort out your VPN target and/or VPN client, and what sort of attacks you're securing against...
As for this case, satellite latency is large.  The latency involved is the time it takes to the command or the text from your local Mac to the satellite ~35,786 kilometers up and then ~35,786 kilometers back down, and then the response back again.  That's about a quarter second, each way, at the speed of light.  Transferring big files is fine (once the connection is open and the transfer gets rolling), but anything interactive — such as a typical use of a VPN — is going to have a noticable lag.
Yes, it'll be easiest to get somebody to work through your requirements and expectations, and initially set this up for you.  Or you can use this as an opportunity to read about and learn more about IP routing and networking and VPNs, too.
[1] VPNs seek to ensure that the network connection is secure, and from a known client IP source address to the IP address of the target VPN server.  NAT explicitly obscures the network connections, and often has multiple client hosts located behind one IP address.   Put another way, the VPN and NAT software implementations are working at cross-purposes.

  • Video Performance On 2009 Mini Before And After Snow Leopard

When I ran Leopard on my 2009 Mac Mini, I could watch full screen video on one of my two monitors while surfing the web on the other. It wasn't flawless, I could see some latency issues, but it was entirely tolerable. With Snow Leopard, the full screen video openly stutters, and frames are being dropped like mad. Unless a future update improves this, I've basically lost the ability to watch video on a second monitor and surf the net at the same time.

If you have not done since upgrading to Snow Leopard, run Disk Utility and use +Repair Disk Permissions+.
As a test, create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html
Log out and log in to the new account. In the new account, you will be using default Snow Leopard user preference settings, and only standard background processes are running (unless you installed third-party software that runs at the system level). Try doing the video thing that worked before, to see if there is any improvement.
If it works better, there is something in your normal account that is conflicting with how Snow Leopard operates. You can focus your trouble-shooting there to figure out what it is.
If it is the same, the problem is likely to be at the system level. Hopefully, the first update will help. In the mean time, if you happen to have an external drive that you can erase, you might try a fresh installation there and boot from it, to see if that makes a difference. Alternately, you can, of course, back up your data, erase your internal drive, install Snow Leopard, and restore your data.

  • Software Monitoring Latency

Folks: I know some latency is unavoidable but this seems way too high - I'd say around 20-50 msec, something like a slapback echo, pretty much unusable. I have no plugins on the channel, Low Latency mode is checked, Compensation set to "Audio and Software Instruments", limit 5 msec. Have tried IO buffer sizing from 1024 down to 32 samples seemingly with no effect. Funny thing, I don't remember this problem from when I was using Logic 7. Would appreciate some ideas.
    thanks Bark

    you are on M-Audio?
I think you can obtain a faster Latency by using the Mac Built-in Audio Input...
M-Audio is a Avid product... it is not good for Logic..
Ask to M-Audio and check for drivers...
there are problems with Leopard 10.5.6 and Avid device drivers!

  • Multiple FTP Connections in Leopard....

To make a long story short, I decided to buy a big bad FTP client after years of using FileZilla.
It posed so many problems and no matter what I was able to do, It would not establish multiple connections. There are ways to adjust your TCP, port numbers, and latency. But all of that is so far over my head.
Is there an easy way to configure an FTP client in Leopard?
    Thank you,
    Mark.

Turn on in Leopard SysPref, File Sharing, options, check share files and folders using AFP &FTP and click done. Any other local macs do the same settings, or at least ftp access if not Leo. Also for security: http://www.macworld.com/article/132002/2008/02/mobilemac2503.html and
http://www.macresearch.org/restricted-sftp-mac-os-x-leopard but I guess chroot is possibly iffy
Ftp isn't the best choice. There are hosts that let you send BIG files, there is email, set up Postfix, etc. This long winded post might just give you an idea.

  • Latency in rewire mode is really  annoying!!!

i have a white intel imac 17" 2ghz w 2gb ram running .4.10. My sound card is an usb external line 6 ux-1. Trying to do some rewire work with reason 3 for some drum sounds 7 getting a rather annoying latency problem when rewired & using the reason sounds. Ive selected the "low latency" button but it really doesnt do much. All programs minus logic & reason are closed. Are there any settings i can change? im not overly cluey when it comes to buffers & the more advanced setting so if someone can help that would be ace!!
    cheers

Low latency button must be off.
use 256 or less buffer setting...
I'm on Leopard and Reason 4 works fine
Maybe you need to update Reason?.. I don't know about reason 3
    Good Luck

  • Slow Internet in Leopard 10.5.7

I just updated my 1.83 ghz macbook pro to the latest version of leopard. After which my internet is noticeably slower than it was under 10.4, to the point where it makes loading videos on hulu or youtube impossible and doing any sort of web browsing difficult. Google has many different causes. Any idea what I may be looking at?

It was an install to a brand new hard drive. The router has the latest firmware.
But how old is the router? And not all routers work well with Leopard. Only those with the latest security features.
After trying to go thru the other suggestions, most of that sounds way over my head. Its really quite frustrating. What changed in airport from 10.4 to 10.5 that caused this?
Security. When Leopard came out many of us had to update router firmware or replace the router.
The usual complaint was, "It worked with Tiger and my XP but not with Leopard."
Right now this MBP connects at 20 Mb/s same as Tiger and same as my PCs.
I use two modems, a Verizon MI424WR Rev. E and a LinkSys WRT54GX2, all with the very latest firmware. No problems with either. No connection speed problems, no dropout problems.
It's not Leopard, it's usually router incompatibility.
    You can also visit
    http://www.speedtest.net/
and see your actual speeds, separate from the initial delay or latency.
DNS is usually the culprit when latency is an issue, but never when the basic speed is the problem
