Leopard Mail Inconsistent at best - went back to Entourage!

I loaded 10.5 on my PowerBook G4 just after it's release. I migrated to mail 3.0 from Entourage and was pleased that all went well including my Exchange server settings at work but...several emails that have been listed as sent have not been recieved by the recipients (most notably to Comcast accounts). Also many mails sent on my Exchange server have not been received by the recipients. I have tried various fixes, port changes etc. to no avail. It is truly disturbing to THINK that you have sent an email and get no indication that it did not get to the intended recipient. Consequently I have switched back to Entourage as painful as that is. I have tried Apple mail in every OS X release and have yet to get a useable product! Apple, please fix this mess!
PS I have also put 10.5 on 2 G4 iBook's and a MacBook Pro where mail has been equally inconsistent!
Has anyone had a bug free experience with Mail 3.0??

I don't think it has anything to do with the client (Entourage or Mail) that you are using. Once either one "sends" a message, it is gone. Whether or not it ever shows up at the recipient depends on a number of other factors, none of which include the client used to send the message.
One of those "other factors" could be anti-spam systems. It is slightly possible that you mail settings aren't quite the same as the Entourage settings. Usually, though, that would cause Mail not to work at all. It is unlikely (though remotely possible) that the receiving server could detect some slight difference between the message headers and think your message is spam or forged. You will sometimes get rejection responses in these cases. You can always send yourself the same message using both Mail and Entourage and look for any differences (use view as Raw message).
You mentioned that the problem was more common with Comcast recipients. Some big ISPs go overboard on anti-spam system. For example, a spammer sets up shop at a cheap ISP and gets detected and the e-mail server blacklisted. Anyone else who has the misfortune to have had an account at the same ISP might also get blacklisted just because they use the same server. Again, sometimes you will get rejections if this happens. You will have to contact your ISP and have them contact Comcast to get it fixed. I have an account on Dreamhost and this used to happen a couple of times a year. It hasn't happened for a while though.
The bottom line is that e-mail just isn't very reliable. There is certainly nothing wrong with mail that will make it less reliable than any other e-mail client.

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

Download the yahoo email app, if you already deleted and reinstalled the email account and still have issue.
This is a known issue with Yahoo email account.

  • Snow Leopard Mail - Sorts by Subject

After upgrading to Snow Leopard, Mail always wants to sort my messages by "Subject." In Leopard it sorted by "Date Sent." I can go through and updated all my Smart Mailboxes, inboxes, folders, etc., to sort by "Subject;" however, if I quite Mail and start it back up, Mail returns all the inboxes, folders, etc., to sort by "Subject."
This is a real pain. Others elsewhere in the forum have reported this problem (but I didn't see a separate thread on this topic). Any solution is appreciated.

Well, after some trial and error, decided to try something simple. Created a new account on my mac. Logged in and launched mail. Configured my gmail account and created a simple smartmailbox "Unread". It was working even after closing and reopening mail, so this is clearly a problem with my local preferences.
I deleted all that and went back to my original account. And proceeded to perform some tests. Moving and changing preferences here and there. Despite doing all that, I have been unable to fix Mail. I then proceeded to test something (*and having a backup*) of my ~Library/Mail folder (which is, by the way, quite big) I closed Mail. Then I deleted (made a backup too!) my ~Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
After a Mail's relaunch, it will actually behave as a "new mail install", your accounts will be gone (tho not all your stuff is gone, since your Library/Mail folder is "intact").
I just wanted to test, so I went ahead and recreated my Gmail acount. My Smartfolders were there (those are stored in ~Library/Mail/SmartMailboxes.plist, a file I hadn't touched), but this time, magically, the sorting worked.
This has been the short version of the story. The truth is I've performed several tests and even edited my plists manually (and tried different stuff).
In the end, I decided to keep this "new preference" (yes, a pain to reconfigure stuff back) and recreate mailboxes and/or missing settings (but not my rules, signatures, etc.) You have to check that everything is as it was (and it won't, there will be some things that you need to reassign) but most of your stuff will be "ok".
I carry my Mail settings back from Panther, so i assume that somewhere in between Tiger and Leopard (the later's mail was awful during Leopard's first versions) something got corrupted. In fact under Snow Leopard preferences are now "binary" and not a "simple xml" anymore, tho it seems that SL should be able to convert it (provided the plist is ok, which in my case was not).
AFter spending a few hours with this, I can say that, Snow Leopard's mail works faster and does what it's supposed to do. (New mail's sound and all that stuff that was working weird).
In conclusion: You'll probably want to give this "wipe it all" a try. Let's just hope that whatever comes in the future from Apple, doesn't break Mail preferences (as it has been doing since Panther).
As usual, *remember to always have a backup of everything you touch*.
    Hope this helps.
    Good luck.

  • Once firefox 4.o was installed, full screen video produced white screen. Had to exit and and restart video. Using a mac os 10.5. Disabling hardware acceleration did not fix. went back to firefox 3.6 and all is ok. Any help would be appreciated.

Once firefox 4.o was installed, when switching to full screen while watching any internet video produced a white screen but audio still playing. Switching back to small screen has a still video but audio still going. Had to exit and and restart video or open a blank new new tab then delete it and then small screen video would play. Using a mac os 10.5. Disabling hardware acceleration did not fix. went back to firefox 3.6 and all is ok. Any help would be appreciated.

Your hardware was never designed to run that old a version of OS X, it's best to update the application or find another application that is more up to date. Installing Leopard simply will not work on your system.

  • Moving email from Outlook Express on Windows XP to Leopard Mail

What are the steps I should take to move my email from a Windows XP computer running Outlook Express to my new iMac running OS X 10.5 and Mail?
I'm assuming I have to move the mailbox files from the Windows machine to the iMac and then run some kind of import.
Where are the mailbox files on the Windows machine and what are they called?
Does Mail support a direct import of those files or do I have to convert them somehow? If I have to convert them, is there an export command in Outlook Express that will do the trick? If not, what do I need to do to convert the files? Is there an application (preferably a free one that can do the trick)?
Finally, anything I should know about that could cause an import of email to choke - bad characters in folder names, too many emails in a folder, subsubfolders, etc.?
    Thanks in advance,
    Steve

Since there were no responses, I figured I'd post my own solution. After searching around online, there seem to be several ways to accomplish this. The first I tried was installing Thunderbird on the XP box and importing the Outlook Express email into it. This seemed to have grabbed most of my email. For some reasons a few boxes did not show up in Thunderbird though. Next step was to move the Thunderbird mailboxes over to the Leopard box and run the import process in Mail. This worked for all of my boxes except my Sent mail which choked the import routine (spinning beach ball). So, I went back into Thunderbird and split the 12K emails in the sent box into 6 separate email boxes and moved those over to the Mac. They imported fine. Then I just moved the messages back into the sent box.
That still left the few mystery mail folders that didn't import into Thunderbird. For those, I downloaded a utility that converted dbx to mbox format. Ran it on those boxes, renamed the new file extensions to mbox from mbx and moved those to the Mac and imported them into Leopard.
For some reason one box still didn't come across. But I just forwarded the 8 emails in that box to myself.
It took forever (mainly because the XP machine was so slow and because of the number of emails). But, it did work.

  • What's wrong with Leopard mail, its allowed in, something corrupting my mac

    Hi,
I recently bought a brand new 24 inch iMac and Leopard. Most things were fine until I received an unsolicited email on 28th Nov ...from a
Gemma Hindley FW; Compost like a pro
since then mail has gone haywire. I cannot delete this email at all. I cant receive any emails and I work from home and am really desperate as this is causing me major stress.
The waste paper icon has gone from my mail window and although emails are deleted from the working window, the dont go in the waste bin or the waste bin in the dock. When I quit ad reopen Gemma Hindley reappears.
Many times a completely different window appears when I open mail one that I have never seen before and is very difficult to navigate. many of the icons in the mail header bar are non operative with this window.
Other times Mail wont open, or wont quit, or cant send emails, have nt received any since Gemma this email. Then I went through this forum and found that if I
Open mail go to prefs general and switch check mail "manually.
    Force quit mail
Open Mail again go to prefs junk mail and turn off spam filtering
This then allowed me to open the usual mail working window and I received that infuriating email again and no other ones at all. I have sent myself emails and so have others but they have not been received by me at all. the above steps allowed me to send emails.
There is obviously a problem with Leopard mail. Whether or not this email has corrupted my mac I don't know. It looks like it is blocking all my incoming emails.
I am not as adept as many of you on this forum, just a simple user trying to earn a living and not able to do so at present. Help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance. George UK

For anyone else reading this thread, it is worth knowing that sometimes an email is, or can be, corrupted thereby jamming the works. The solution above is good, but I just wanted to suggest another one.
If the problem arises, go to an online mail access service, such as Mail2Web.com and login to you mail account there and delete the offending message.
    Problem solved.
And George, as this is all entirely voluntary, whinging about no takers may not endear people to you. Besides which, a few minutes of searching on Google would have found you a number of solutions.

    Thanks for the follow up.
Missing in this equation were the version of Premiere Elements that you were using and the computer operating system on which it was running. But...
The deed is done. But.....Until now and after you went ahead and moved to version 12, we now learn what version of Premiere Elements you were using. We still do not know the computer operating system involved.
You just said Premiere Elements 10. Premiere Elements 10 is hit by a serious known display issue if the computer uses a NVIDIA GeForce video card/graphics card. In this issue, the only remedy is to roll back the driver version to about May 2013. The description of the problem and how to do the roll back are described in one of the Announcements at the top of this forum. What video card/graphics card does your computer use?
On another front, Adobe will be releasing a new version of Premiere Elements any day now. No one but Adobe knows the feature set for the new version. That type of information is announced at the moment of release of the new version.
So the remedy to the problem that you presented in this thread could have been...
    1. Rolling back the NVIDIA GeForce driver version to about May 2013 if possible (Windows 8 or 8.1 64 bit, may not be possible)
    2. Move to another version of Premiere Elements (which you did)
I offer the above for consideration so that you can review your decisions. We are pleased to learn that Premiere Elements 12/12.1 works for you.
Please do not hesitate to ask questions and ask for clarifications, but remember that the answers are in the details.
    Best wishes,

  • I went back to Outlook to change some files, but they didn't change in TBird. How do I update w/o making the same changes in TBird?

I've been using TBird for a month to test it out for our company. Late Friday, I then went back to my Outlook account and changed some files--moved some files into another existing folder and then deleted the old folder. When I went back to TBird after the weekend, I see that the changes I made to Outlook are not reflected in my TBird folders. Will this eventually happen, or is there something I need to do? Or will it never happen and will I have to make those same changes in TBird?

  • Snow Leopard MAIL SMTP problem...

    Hi,
I have a friend using Snow Leopard MAIL. And he reported to me that all of his outbound emails were (all of a sudden??) being bounced back from his ISP (Hargray.com)
I was able to determine that the problem lies in the SMTP protocol bering issued forth by his iMac/Mail.
Using WireShark I can see that the EHLO being sent out is similar to:
    EHLO ricks-printer-2/.001/
By comparison what comes out of my machine is:
    EHLO [192.168.0.111]
I have already modfied his HOSTNAME in the /etc/hostconfig file but his EHLO computer name persists!
I have NO IDEA where its getting this 'ricks-printer-2' from nor why the SMTP process attaches the even worse junk on then of that.
The ISP comes back with  "EHLO ricks-printer-2/.001/  Bad MIME TYPE"
    I've scoured the web for solutions and REALLY thought the fixing up his HOSTNAME would do the trick, but no joy. {It did make the COMPUTER NAME in a terminal session prompt come out correctly though....}
    Any ideas?
    thanks,
    tob

I'm having the exact same issue. I've spent hours rebuilding mailboxes, passwords, and keys. I can often go days before the mail will actually be seen in these offline boxes. Apple - we need this fixed!

With most applications, when the icon bounces, the bouncing is stopped once the function it was notifying you about has been taken care of. This is not the case with Snow Leopard Mail. When a Rule has been created to 'Bounce Icon in Dock', the icon keeps bouncing, even after the message it was notifying you about has been selected and read. The user must then go back to the icon and click it to stop it from bouncing. It would be much more convenient and intuitive if the icon stopped bouncing after the messages have been read. Does anyone no of a way to configure Mail to do this?

    Look at that:

You can use both rules together (sound & bouncing)
    I had test it!
