Leopard Mail! Problems?...heck, it launches and the ball starts spinning...

Yup.
God bless all of the early adopters.
I installed Leopard the other night. First just the update....hmmm, things were buggy. So I archived and installed.
Mail.....will launch, and then the spinning ball of death starts. Nothing else. I have to force quit it.
I have read through the threads here, and many seem to have specific problems. Mine is a bit more generic...I cant get to first base.
Suggestions?
Another observation. I am using Firefox to post this. When I start to write or type anything into a Safari window......the spinning ball of death happens in Safari as well.
I dont mean to sound surly, but I am a bit disappointed in this upgrade to say the least.
Thoughts or suggestions on my malady?

This is what I would try in your situation...
Obviously it is always good to have a backup to start off with...
I would reinstall Leopard using Archive and Install but do NOT preserve user settings...
After the installation and Leopard starts, you will be presented with a new install and you will have to fill in all the information just like a new computer...
Do not move any of your files or preferences over at this time. They will still be in a folder called "Previous Systems" as you probably already know..
See if Leopard runs for you this way... If it does, then start moving some of your things back a little at a time.

Could be a hardware failure such as a HD going south. Please carefully read and follow the suggestion Apple provides in Gray screen appears during startup.

  • Yahoo! Mail no longer loads emails and the ads are missing after having cleared Firefox's cookies, history, and cache.

Ironically, I made this support account just to ask this question and had to go to IE to verify.
Anyway, Yahoo! Mail use to work almost flawlessly before a couple days ago. Basically, the page loads like normal when I have a good connection except that the ads on the sides are missing, my profile picture is gone, the "fancy" rounded edges of the buttons are nonexistent, none of the menus work or open anything, and all of the links are useless. I have been searching for solutions for two hours now and none of them are relevant or useful:
    - Clear cookies = when I cleared cookies, cache and history is when the problem first started;
    - Disable Ghostery = I just learned about it today and so never installed it, but I also checked to make sure it wasn't there somehow;
    - Start in Safe Mode = the problem is still there and the only change was that it loaded the page faster;
    - Disable AVG = I can't because I can't find it anywhere...;
    - Disable Security/Change Permissions? = I think this was a suggested solution, but it already allows Yahoo! Mail to load images and set cookies while blocking pop-ups, location sharing, and installing themes/extensions;
    - Update Firefox = No. I like my old version. I keep hearing weird and annoying things about updated versions of Firefox, and I'm not going to risk losing everything else just to get Yahoo! Mail back
I started using Firefox (3.6.12) because IE was slow, but ever since I tried clearing the cache, cookies and history Firefox has been going slower. Oddly enough, all of my browsing history was not deleted because certain web pages (that I haven't accessed in ages) show up in the address bar when I go to type. Gmail works in Firefox despite saying my browser isn't supported, but Yahoo! never bothers me about my browsers and now its acting strange.
By the way, I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but right before Yahoo! Mail took the usability train off a cliff, it reloaded (because clearing the cookies logged me out), then told me the internet connection was slow and that I can switch to Basic for better results. I decided to stick with Classic and then it "crashed".
Anyone help with this would be appreciated. One of the reasons I switched to FF is because Yahoo! Mail was faster on it, and I'd hate to have to go back to IE...
    Thanks in advance!

As it turns out, many others have been having similar issues on other browsers. It seems that maybe Yahoo! is taking a much longer time to load or something like that. Either way, its been working on and off all week, and the same issue even showed up yesterday with IE 8 instead of FF. It still loads faster than IE 8, but again is spotty. Some people think the issue may be with mail.yimg.com or s.yimg.com, which I could see was the loading url in the left corner whenever Yahoo! Mail was refusing to work. A couple of people said blocking it caused the issue. Alternatively, some people suggested blocking it to solve the problem. Does anyone have any information on that? Again, I have no add-ons that would be blocking any urls, and my firewall hasn't any records of it. I really don't want to do anything to mess up my browsers more than they may have already been. Thanks for all of your help so far!

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; this can be done by phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, or clicking here and picking a method, or if your country isn't listed in either article, filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

Question (?) Mark, Blinking Folder, or Gray Screen at Startup
These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
In most cases the problems may be caused by one or more of these:
    a. Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
    b. Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
    c. Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
    d. The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
Note that the information I have provided is what Apple recommends, If other users suggest different solutions than found here, then be sure what they recommend does not impact on your warranty, if any, or ability to get continuing Apple service.
Please don't start removing drives or changing cables unless you know what you are doing and have exhausted other non-invasive alternatives outlined here. If you perform any work yourself that is unapproved by Apple, then you will void any warranty you may have and lose all further Apple Support.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD. Simply boot from the Recovery HD to perform the above.
Reinstall Snow Leopard Without Erasing The drive
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • When i open safari, it will not load and the color wheel spins

When i open up safari, it will not load anything and the color wheel spins as long as safari is open. Not sure what to do.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • My Photos app stopped working last week.  It opens to the welcome splash screen, but when i select get started, the wheel starts spinning and that's all that happens.  When I try to close it, it says it's creating a library, but never ends.

I have been using Photos since the update.  I had no problems until last week when it stopped working.  Despite the fact that I've been using it, it opens to the welcome splash screen with the "Get Started" button.  When I click it, the wheel starts spinning and that's all that happens until eventually force quit it using the apple menu.  Can anyone help?

OK, so apparently you have the MBW connected via the software equivelent of a crossover cable- ethernet frames but no routing.  Not sure what negative impact that has or doesn;t have. Certainly its not how the drive was intended to work - it would be far easier to just have a USB connection for that.
WD software in general has a very bad history. Note that some drives have been lost entirely due to incompatability with Mavericks - read the tips section here for mroe details, btu i would NOT use it.
I cant help you with WD software. But the first task is to access the drive and make sure you can communicate with it. I would go to the main drive to do that. From there you should be abke to remove the partition for the backup, and begin over with something less troublesome - such as Carbon Copy Cloner, Time MAchine ( i dont use it and did nt much like it) or , my preferred method, good old unix rsync.
In any event, your prpoblem is one of authorization. So first see if the drive is responding in general ( try to access it the normal way), then move to that particular volume.

My iphone home button stopped working and the phone started getting hot. The camera also fogged up. What do I do?

I'm guessing it's a hardware problem. Your best option is to go to an Apple Store as soon as you can to try and sort this all out. While you're waiting to go visit an Apple Store, however, I'd imagine you still want to use your phone. To circumvent your hardware button problems, try enabling Assistive Touch by going to Settings>General>Accesibility>Assistive Touch. You'll see a small box appear on your screen. Tapping it will bring up several options for you to choose from, like the home button. Clicking the "Device" option will give you several options for controlling your phone that you would normally use hardware buttons for (i.e. volume, lock your phone, etc.) Hope this helps and good luck!

  • I tried many times to turn it on, it turns and the same white screen appears and the update starts again and shuts down. Please Help me!

    Hello!
I have a MacBook Air. I have got a software update notification couple of days ago. I've clicked on it today, and it started installing updates.
But, I have got a notification telling that not all updates were installed successfully, then I have clicked on "Restart" from the notification box. Then my Mac restarted and the white screen with Apple logo and the update progress appeared (like what always happens during updates).
The problem that while the update progress reached around half the way, my Mac shutdown. I tried many times to turn it on, it turns and the same white screen appears and the update starts again and shuts down.
    Please Help me!
    MacBook Air (11-inch Mid 2009)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
You did not state whether you installed the update while on battery (not mains) power. You are warned not to apply certain updates without being connected to a charger & mains power.
    Also remove any attached peripherals.
Reboot in Repair mode (command-R at start)  and use Disk Tools-Disk Utility-Disk First AId to repair your disk, and as long as you're there repair permissions. Next quit Disk Tools and reinstall the OS. After completing that successfully reboot, log in and do a combo update.
You must have more than enough (not just enough) empty (free) disk space for the update.

My MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) switches on but internal display remains off/black .There is no start-up sound and the fan starts off normal but after about Five minutes begins to run even faster as if the machine is running a heavy load.It displayed a question mark some time back then a friend borrwed it ,he flashed the system and put windows 7.Then a few days pasted and now it wont display as stated.I have tried to Reset SMC and the Command + P + R + Power but still no response. Please assist?
    Regrads Josh

I think your "friend" caused a problem (or two).
I do not know what "flashed the system" means......
Based on what was done, I would probably erase the HD and restore the system from a backup before the software changes were made.
