Leopard mail won't remember passwords

For some strange reason Leopard mail doesn't seem to want to save any of our passwords to any of our accounts. We've gone into +mail preferences+ and saved them there, but as soon as we close down mail it 'forgets' them again. We've also repaired the keychain, but the same thing happens.
Anyone know of how to fix a password memory problem to get the passwords to 'stick' in mail?

LOL Thanks for the chuckle, we needed it
{quote}I've been at this for two weeks now and my keychains are unresponsive even after reparing permissions, starting over with a clean keychain and even a new user.{quote}
Yep, we've done the same with no results. Our problem has actually become WORSE over time - now it even asks us to put in the main keychain password, then it asks for each individual e-mail account password
{quote}It's crazy that they've managed to screw this up so badly.{quote}
I know. What is most upsetting to us is that Mail was not broken. For as long as we've used Tiger it has worked flawlessly. Then Leopard comes out and adds a few cosmetic type features to Mail and the whole ball of wax becomes a mess. Very disappointing to say the least.

  • Snow Leopard: Mail doesn't remember passwords no on login keychain

I keep my mail passwords in a separate keychain.
Prior to 10.6, I would only have to unlock the keychain and grant Mail access to the passwords.
Now, with Snow Leopard, I'm bugged to enter my keychain password every hour or so. It's completely busted.
I've tried deleted the passwords and re-entering them. Also tried moving the passwords onto anothey keychain.
    Can anyone suggest a workaround?

I'm have exactly the same problem. both my accounts are hotmail and even if i fill in passwords both in the pop up box and in pref -accounts it bounces!
I shall await with interest on a reply from apple!

  • GMail IMAP - Mail won't remember my settings

For some reason Mail won't remember my settings on how to handle mail.
I selected all of the recommended IMAP client settings that GMail recommended, but for some reason, Mail seems to keep forgetting it. Each time I go back to see the settings, they're back to the original default settings.

Any ideas on what's going on?

Hmm, did you do an upgrade to Leopard? If so, perhaps the permissions are not correct. You can try repairing permissions on your ~/Library/Mail folder or even deleting it altogether and reconfiguring from scratch. If you're using IMAP, all of your messages should be on the server, so you shouldn't lose any e-mail trying this.

    You're not alone.
I had to buy a card reader yesterday. This is obviously a 10.4.8 / 6.0.5 issue.

  • Mac Mail won't forget password 10.8.5, Mac Mail won't forget password 10.8.5

Two of my co-workers updated their iMacs to 10.8.5 this week and now they can't set up Mac Mail in a way where it won't remember their password.  They tried deleting it from the password field but it always reappears even after hitting save in account preferences.  These are single user machines.  They are, however, in a busy office and they would like it so no one can get new mail or send mail from their macs when they step away from their machines in the time it takes for the screensaver to kick in.

    Eric, thanks again.
The problem seems to be that the moment I key the mail passwords in, they are stored in the Keychain Access.
I have again deleted them from Keychain Access and when I do that they are also deleted simultaneously from Mail/Preferences/Accounts and System Preferences/Mail, Contacts & Calendars. Thus each box in the Mail application is definitely empty ie without a password.
This locked me out of getting mail completely as I could not get email from any of my 4 POP accounts.
I put the pop mail password back into the box in System Preferences/Mail, Contacts & Calendars and it appears automatically in Keychain Acess but not in Mail Preferences. Mail then asks me for the password to get pop mail, I key it in and then Mail continues to remember the password, which is exactly what I don't want.
    This is really confusing.
Perhaps the question is really how to stop the Mail application from accessing the Keychain Acess application or how to stop a password that is keyed in being added to the Keychain Access.

  • My ipod touch 4th gen won't remember passwords

    HI everyone,
my ipod touch used to remember passwords, then I had to change some that expired, so I told it to 'forget' passwords, now it won't remember the new ones!
    how can I fix that?
    thank  you

    well, that didn't fix it.
it is more frustrating because the right side letters don't type o portrait orietation, and the school logon screen doesn't go to landscape when I turn it, so I have put my passwords and school id in the notepad so I can copy and paste everyday I am at school

  • Mail won't 'remember' mail server settings.

Suddenly Mail won't send or receive. When I look in Preferences>accounts the mail server setting is empty. If I set up a new account and manually enter 'imap.mail.me.com' it is removed when I hit the button to save the account?

I am having this same issue on an Exchange account. I keep putting in the new server details but it keeps reverting back to the old one.
I have deleted the plist and mail folders in library but it seems to keep going back to the old one.

Its been fine for a year, really, and now today, Safari 5.0.1 will no longer remember passwords when I'm in private mode.

Not sure, but isn't this supposed to be the ideal function of private mode; not saving your passwords or any other entered data?

  • Mail doesn't remember password

Since updating to Maverick I have to enter my password every time I open Mail.  Opening the accounts settings shows that the password is not entered but entering it and saving it doesn't work as it asks again the next time and the accounts settings has again lost it.

The trouble with this is that it has to re-sync all 8,000 read messages that I have never gotten around to deleting.
I did this last year when buying a new computer and migrating everything.  It still took two days to re-sync iCloud and gmail and I ended up with hundreds of "unread" mail.
Deleting and re-adding the account may work, but why can't it remember my password from one execution of Mail to the next?  Is this something to do with the revised Keychain?

  • "Mail" can't remember password for cloud mail

In preparation for the iCloud move on July 1, 2012, I updated to latest version of OS X 10.7, and had everything working. As of July 1 I get:
    Enter Password for Account "MobileMe"
The iCloud IMAP server "p99-imap.mail.me.com" rejected the password for user myusername
Enter your password again or cancel
This box comes up for every incoming message to my mac.com/me.com address. I have entered my password, and told it to remember the password in the keychain, repeatedly, but the dialog box keeps coming up. My password was just changed and meets or exceeds Apple security rrequirements.
I can access my mail by using a browser through icloud.com. The Mail program on my iMac can reach all my non-cloud mail without trouble.
My first thought was that I need to direct my mail program to another server, but I can't find any reference to such a change being needed or an address for such a new server. I get way too much mail on that account to make entering my password for every message practical.
To make it more confusing, my wife's iMac is getting her mac.com/me.com messages without any trouble, and they seem to be set up identically.
Does anyone have ideas as to how I can adapt to whatever changed on July 1?

    p99-imap.mail.me.com
Hmmm, Apple does oen that, but I use imap.mail.me.com
Do you have an old MobileMe server or 2 still in Mail?
    See if this helps...
Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Keychain Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over.

  • Dumb mistake, now mail won't recognize password

I'm a Verizon DSL customer and use my Apple Mail.app for all my mail. I just was on the Verizon site updating some personal info and saw there was an upgrade for a Verizon/Yahoo deal. I did the upgrade but, like many companies, their set up was not working correctly with my Imac (G4 Imac - 3 years old). After going through the whole set up process and not liking the results, I discontinued the upgrade. It had linked my Verizon account to my Yahoo account. I reverted back by unlinking Verizon from Yahoo on the web based account management page (Verizons page). BUT NOW MY MAIL.APP WON'T RECOGNIZE MY PASSWORD! I didn't change my password! The prompt says:
"The SMTP server “outgoing.verizon.net” rejected the password for user “(my name)”
Please re-enter your password, or cancel."
I've already tried going into my account and typing in my password but it's being stubborn and won't accept it as the correct password!! What happened and what can I do to fix this?
    Vanessa

Thanks Allan but I tried many times deleting and re-entering my SMPT, no luck. It's funny, I've always been able to access my e-mail on Verizon's web based site, it's the same e-mail that's accessible by my Mail.app. I logged into my web based Verizon mail with my same log-in information that is saved in my Mail.app. I was able to log-in everytime, so my password is still being accepted by Verizon's web based mail. I have a sub account in my Apple Mail.app with different user name but same password and IT IS RECEIVING AND SENDING MAIL. That should be a big clue to those of you who know more about this than me...lol!

  • E mail won't accept password

My e mail provider direcway.com was purchased by hughes.net and I am being "forced" to change my e mail address. I managed to follow there twisted instructions and set up my new account on the web and to get my old e mails forwarded to my new e mail account...but only when accessed via the web. When I try and use my e mail account thru the dock i keep getting an error message that my password is wrong. My passwords have not changed. The help line for the new provider is impossible to deal with and I would have to take a leave of absence from my job just to sit on the phone all day. Any suggestions?
    SZ

Did you remember to change the ISP settings and account name in your mail program? (I hope this doesn't come off as a dumb question --- it's the kind of thing that's easy to overlook when you're focused on getting the network settings changed over.)

  • Intel Imac (snow leopard) Mail/Icloud not accepting Password

I am having a very strange problem since yesterday when mail on my Imac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 started complaining about wrong password.
I reset the account on Mail, deleted the account, set the account back up, reset the password various times but to no avail.
I have mail running also on my macbook running Lion and on my iphone 4 running Ios 5.0.1 and they all work with no problem and they have accepted the new password.
I have tried installing Thhunderbird and tried to configure it on the Imac for use with icloud account but same issue was presented.
I tried setting up the icloud email on my windows 7 pc and had the same issue.
I have also installed the Icloud app for snow leopard and that as well is giving the same error message.
I have tried all the suggestions found in this support forum but none of them have produced positive results.
Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what I could do to have mail working again??
    Cheers
    Mirco

I reset the account on Mail, deleted the account, set the account back up, reset the password various times but to no avail.
Launch Keychain Accesss located in /Applications/Utilities
    Select Passwords on the left.
Locate your mail keychain. You can use the search field top right corner of the window.
Then right or control click the keychain then click Delete.
Now open Mail. From the menu bar click Mail > Preferences then select the Accounts tab then the Account Information tab.
Type in the correct password. You should be prompted to save that information to a new keychain.
