Leopard: Multiple IMAP-SSL Connections Per Account

I run my own mail server that I access through Mac Mail via IMAP-SSL. I haven't had any trouble with it until I installed Leopard last night. The new version of Mail creates 4 connections to the IMAP daemon per account. I can trace each one in the mail server's log files so the count is accurate. Furthermore I know this was not a problem with the previous OS X as I had a max number of daemons per IP address in the mail server set to 14. WIth 4 accounts on my Mac Mail x 4 daemon connections per account = I needed to up the max number of daemons per IP address to 16 to get all my accounts active at once (which worked). While this may be a solution, Mail should only be logging in once per account not four times for each one.
Has anyone else run into this problem? Is there a bug report that can be submitted?
Kevin

This forum is for troubleshooting Mail under Mac OS 10.4 Tiger, not Leopard. You'll probably want to post your question in the Leopard Mail discussions:

• AFP creating 2 connections per account

Ok, it's the first time we are having all the kids in our class log in to the server. Once they log in, they are able to do all the normal stuff we allow them to do. Our problem is when I open Server Admin, I'm seeing double the connections in AFP.
Right now, we have 32 students logged into to the server. AFP shows 64 students, each student is logged in twice in AFP.
Not sure why this is happening, we have there home folders setup on the server, and we have shares mounted when they log in, but it's currently set to use the same user that is logged in for credentials.
Last year we never had this issue, and it only seems to be a problem this year.
Any help would be appreciated!

Dear JGruber
I have the same issue and done some research about it. These are my findings.
I've set up my environment to be fully Kereborised. The issue I've encountered is that neither the "Connect as" (finder side bar) nor the "Connect to Server..." (Go menu) worked properly. Although users were able to access their home folder and group share points, it remained cumbersome to access the different other shares on the server.
In resolving the issue I've found a way to get things working properly. I've used WGM to set some Preferences in the Computer and User Groups login panes: "Mount share point with user's name and settings". All worked great from now. I could access the shares and the using the commands: "Connect as" and "Connect to Server..."
But from this point on, I was using two connections per user. It kind of makes sense? One to log in using Kereberos and one other used by the log in of the client system (Preference seting on server level).
Although it was working, I still was not satisfied. On my 10.3 machine I could access the shares using Kereberos with just 1 user. Since this computer was not bound I always had to create a Kereberos ticket application manually utilizing the Kereberos application whih was populated automatically. So on I've tried to mimic the situation by doing the following:
+ disconnect all shares but the home
+ open manually the Kereberos application
+ kill the currently used ticket (all if needed)
+ create a new ticket for the logged in user
Eureka, all was working perfectly. 1 user logged in. Access to the correct shares and then mentioned commands working as expected.
Since I neither have the skills nor the time to learn, I've never scripted the solution as a log in script. So in the end:
+ I know that logging in and Kereberos ... not quite as expecting. It might be a bug?
+ I still have two logged AFP users.
Oppose Camelot, I disagree that a user per connected share is the way it should be. A limited edition only allows 5 simultaneous AFP connections. So when a user requires access too 6 shares, ...
Other point, supporting my disagreement. I only require 2 connections for 4 shares per user. So something is definitely not working as intended. And I've done quite some investigation on the topic (both web/manuals study and trial and error)
Last but not least. I didn't post a solution, but maybe someone picks it up a find a decent solution/workaround.

• The ol' "mail.app holds 3 persistent connection per account" problem.

I've seen posts from a few years ago regarding this problem. My mail host only allows a certain number of persistent connection... ok, that's my bad for cheaping out on a host, I can dig that.
But there has to be an automated way to check, and disconnect for these types of situations. It doesn't seem right to have to change isp's when mail.app could have a little checkbox that says:
"don't persist IMAP connection because of ghetto ISP".
The fraction of a second it would take to reconnect, check and retrieve headers, then disconnect is something I can live with.
Does anyone have a workaround or know of a client that allows non-persistant imap connections?
Maybe an IMAP proxy daemon?
Any help will be rewarded by receiving the praise of all the other poor sods in the same boat. Your name will be rejoiced the world over, you will be a GOD!
Thanks

If Mail complains that it timed out on port 0, that means there is something wrong with your network and/or account settings.
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
Also, try using a different method to connect to Internet, if possible, or connecting the computer to Internet as directly as possible, i.e. bypassing any routers that might be present, using an ethernet cable instead of wireless, etc., and see whether that makes a difference.
As to the logs, Mail doesn’t make it easy to get them. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console and do either File > Open Console Log, or File > Open System Log, or both, so that Console displays the contents of both system.log and console.log.
Apparently, you can tell Mail to provide detailed log information as described in the following article (I haven’t tried it myself):
Enable detailed Mail.app logging options
Also, Mail comes with a Turn On Logging AppleScript that I haven’t tried either, but that was discussed in the following thread:

• Multiple Signatures on Exchange/Outlook 365 with multiple connected pop3 accounts wanting sepearate signatures

I was referred here from another thread, see
http://community.office365.com/en-us/f/158/p/245124/778388.aspx#778388but not sure if this is the right forum, so please move/correct my posting if needed!
It's a exchange/Outlook365 query, relating to signatures
I have several connected pop3 accounts to the exchange mailbox, but there appears to be no way to have separate signatures for each connected account, in fact there appears to be only 1 signature for the entire account? So when I send emails I can select
from several different from addresses, but the signature remains the same ...
On desktop outlook 2003-2010 at least, there is the ability to have default reply, default new message signatures for each account in use, is there a way to configure the exchange/outlook365 OWA to do this ?
I'm about to test if an outlook 2010 desktop client allows/recognises the server side linked accounts and allows email to be sent from them, so any tips or points on that would be welcome!
thanks

In Outlook2010 you can set multiple signatures, yes.
If you connect to those accounts LOCALLY using POP3 you can also then set defaults for each account ... HOWEVER
if you set the CONNECTED ACCOUNTS via OUTLOOK365 via the cloud server, the local Outlook will not let you set default signatures for each account. Yes you can have signatures and manually select them, but that's not the same thing, and leads to mistakes.
The whole point of connecting the accounts via the Cloud is that the local PC is then no longer part of the critical path when away from the office, so if the local PC crashed or lost internet, then it would not affect mail delivery to the single exchange
mailbox, for access via the web or mobile devices. Quite important. A common failure we have on local outlook pop3 connections is a single password failure to login, leaves the pop up menu on screen and then stops all other pop3 mail collection from working.
We have tried for 2+ years to solve this "password failure popup", but as the passwords are saved and don't change and the problem persists, we wanted to move to the cloud ... and avoid problems when users are away.
Last but not least, if using the cloud to send a reply to a mail via a connected account, the email is not sent as the connected account (despite it being validated for send as) but sent using a "<exchange Primary email> send on behalf of <pop3
connected email>" which defeats to whole point of connecting the accounts and verifying them!
I've got to say when even Google can get this right! why can't Microsoft? It really does suck!
For a business class product having 1 signature per user within OWA is seriously deficient.
Maybe time to move our email needs to Google, as on searching the depths of old archives it does appear these issues have been raised for several years, yet nothing has improved ... shame on Microsoft.

• Multiple connections per Folder...

Is there any way to create multiple imap connections per folder. I have written an exchange conversion utility, and I need to get the mime content of every message in a folder, and right now, that is my bottle neck. I want to thread this section of the code so that I can optimize the conversion. I have tried to increase the number of connection in my connection pool to no avail. After reading the api more closely, it seems to me that only one connection is assigned to each folder, so I can only get mime content serially for that folder. Is this true?
Thanks,
Joe Valerio

I already have the message object with minimal metadata from the original folder. I am using Exchange Web Services to create the mail in Exchange, and it needs the entire mime content base64 encoded, so I do the following...
// Create the Destination Message and set Props before I set the mime-content...
MessageType destMessage = MessageUtil.createMessageType(user, message);
// Convert MimeContent to Base64 and add it to the message.
ByteArrayOutputStream baos = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
BASE64EncoderStream b64es = new BASE64EncoderStream(baos);
message.writeTo(b64es);
b64es.flush();
MimeContentType mime = new MimeContentType();
mime.setValue(baos.toString());
destMessage.setMimeContent(mime);
I would have to open another folder (one imap request per group of messages), getMessageByUID (another imap request per message) and then write the mime content to the encoder stream. I'll give it a shot, but with the extra traffic, i'm not overly optimistic of a performance boost.
Thanks for the reply,
- Joe

• Cannot access to any site with ssl connection and fail to open safari and keychain, unless restart computer and login in with Guest account.

when Update to 10.7.2 ,I cannot access to any site with ssl connection and fail to open safari and keychain, unless restart computer and login in with Guest account.
OS:10.7.2
Macbook Pro 2010-mid 13inch

I also have the same problem, however if I use Firefox or Opera sites with ssl connection work fine. Still, I can't use Google Chrome (ssl), Safari (ssl), the Mac app store (generally), or the iTunes store (generally). Both the iTunes store, Safari and the app store won't respond, and Chrome displays this error: (net::ERR_TIMED_OUT). The problem persists regardless of what network I'm using. Also, when trying to access the keychain or iCloud, the process will not start (will hang). I didn't have these problems at all before updating to 10.7.2.
Sometimes rebooting helps, and sometimes not. If the problem disappears by rebooting, then it only lasts a few minutes before it reappears. It is very frustrating, especially since there doesn't seem to be any obvious or consistent way of which to fix it.
I'm also using a Macbook Pro 13-inch mid 2010.

• Mail.app handling multiple IMAP accounts

Hi,
I find it really hard to use multiple IMAP accounts with Mail.app. The way it displays IMAP accounts is really ugly and very confusing. At best you have one Inbox which displays all the Inboxes on your accounts. Then you have separate drafts, sent, trash treelike view for your accounts "special" mailboxes and then again some-kind-of-tree-view of your IMAP account - which by the way doesn't always even display! It depends if you have checked save trash/sent/junk/etc. messages to server or something which really doesn't have any logic in it. Also it doesn't display all the folders like Inbox (which is combined mailbox at the top which I explained). Then you can drag mailbox from your IMAP account to the "panel" which I think only copies and is not shortcut.
Could you please do something to this instead of adding some ugly templates for sending your holiday pictures to your mom. I think that Mail.app should be developed to more "professional" usage, rather than develope features that teaches people to use their mailclient as a personal spamming tool for horrible HTML-mails.
ps. I'd also like to turn off that stupid embedded-attachemts. Attachments are attachments and not a part of the email content thanks.
-edit-
you can see a screenshot of my Mail.app at work. I use more mailboxes at home and it's way more ugly. There should also be somekind of "don't display" -options as it displays some horrible Exchange-folders also.

• IMAP/SSL: problem connecting from a web application

Hi,
I try to connect to a IMAP/SSL server (with a self-signed certificate) from a web application. I followed http://www.javaworld.com/javatips/jw-javatip115.html.
When I try to connect from a java application it works fine. But when I try it from a servlet, it fails:

java.net.SocketException: gaeron.gcrm.test.mail.DummySSLSocketFactory

at javax.mail.Service.connect(Service.java:236)I use Tomcat 5.5, jdk1.5.0_06 and javamail-1_3_3_01. Here is my code:
Security.setProperty( "ssl.SocketFactory.provider", "gaeron.gcrm.test.mail.DummySSLSocketFactory");
Properties props = new Properties();
Session session = Session.getDefaultInstance(props);
Store store = session.getStore("imaps");
store.connect(server, 993, username, password);
store.close();Can anybody help me?
Thanks,
Előd.

I am not sure there is a class called MBoxSSLFactory. Is that a typo? We are in the same boat. We have a web application running on Tomcat that needs to connect to the IMAP store on the MS Exchange 2003 Server. It was working fine until we enabled Basic Authentication - SSL/TLS required setting on it.
In order to eliminate any complications due to Tomcat and all we are trying to get a simple standalone program that talks to IMAP server (using the DummySSLSocketFactory, DummyTrustManager etc) working.
I am stuck on the same error: (shown below is the stack trace and the code we are running). I have tried all the suggestions that have been posted on this "Unconnected Sockets not implemented" issue. I have tried it with both Jdk 1.4.2_08 and JDK 1.5.0.
The JavaMail version is 1.4. If I use JavaMail version 1.3.1 it complains that there is no store type "imaps". If I use "imap" and not "imaps" as the store type I end up getting "Authentication Failed" exception.
Instead of a DummyTrustManager I even tried importing a certificate. We have deployed a Verisign trial certificate on the EXchange server side. So when we run the InstallCert program (http://blogs.sun.com/andreas/entry/no_more_unable_to_find) it allows us to add the valid certificates to our keystore. Once that is done we have tried to create TrustManager based on that keystore. But NOPE..No success. same problem.
We have been stuck on this one for the last 4 days and we have a very critical client deployment that is hampered by this one. I know it is turkey time now..but would really appreciate it if some one can help us out.

• Mail - Multiple Imap Accounts - Sent Folders

I have multiple Imap accounts set up in my mail.app. I know of the feature to set the the sent mail folder. But what do I do with multiple imap accounts and multiple sent folders? When I would like all my accounts to have the correct sent items.

Not every IMAP server requires that you use that command -- if not needed, then the options for that command will be gray when you select an individual Sent mailbox from the Sidebar. Are you saying there is no black triangle beside the Sent icon, even though you have sent a message from the account?
Control click on the Inbox of the second IMAP account, and choose Get Account Info -- there, under the Quota Limits tab you will see all the folders that currently exist on that IMAP server. What do you see?

• Problems running SSL connection using JRUN 4.0/JDK 1.4.2

Hi,
Our project is to run a SSL connection to FedEx. When we test the connection with WebSphere 5.0 test server, it connected and worked. But, when we tested with our environment (JRUN4), exception thrown:
The following are the exceptions:
===========================
socket = (SSLSocket)factory.createSocket("gateway.fedex.com", 443);
causes the error:
java.net.SocketException: Export restriction: this JSSE implementation is non-pluggable.
Which implies that we are trying to use a SSL impementation other than Sun's, which is not allowed in JDK 1.4.x. Googleing for similar cases confirms that creating SSL sockets has been problematic for JDK 1.4.x users in particular.
However, the following code
SSLSocketFactory factory = (SSLSocketFactory)SSLSocketFactory.getDefault();
System.out.println("Classname: "+factory.getClass().getName());
produces
Classname: javax.net.ssl.DefaultSSLSocketFactory
This seems to imply that we are using the Sun SSL implementation. So I am not sure what could be causing the error. Have any you ever run into this particular problem before and if so what is your recommendation?
Any idea, thinking is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I have plenty of HD space (130GB) left, so that's not the problem.
Actually, the amount of free space is not nearly as relevant to the issue as the % of free space. If your HD is over about 50% full, especially doing video, there will be performance degradation compared to an HD that is less than about 50% full. It's the physics of the hard drive. In addition, if you are working on HD video you can easily need 50-100GB per hour of video for working storage & render files. And if you render multiple times, FCE is not good at cleaning up old render files, so multiple renders take more & more disk space. The only effective way to clean out old render files is to manually delete them from your FCE /Render Files folder. And it's nearly impossible to tell which render files are actually in current use, so you end up having to delete them all and then re-render your entire timeline if you really want to free up disk space.
To answer your question about upgrading, yes, once you install Snow Leopard you should be able to update to 10.6.8 via Software Update. That's how I've always done it.
If your black Macbook is the one I suspect it is, the official max is 4GB RAM but it appears it will work with 6GB. Overall, the system specs are on the low side for FCE 4
As for still images, I have generally found sizing them to no more than 2x your video frame size works pretty well. Larger than that, FCE will be discarding lots of pixels to fit the image into your video frame. You need to consider the actual pixel dimensions of your image, not the embedded resolution or dpi. Actual pixel dimensions are what's important. The larger your jpeg image the more pixels will be discarded, so images that are much larger than your frame size are not advisable.

After verifying the account migration, including .Mac connectivity, and fixing all 3rd party software compatibilities/upgrades, I tried to connect to our Tiger 4.11 server by clicking on the server's Icon in the Shared section of the Finder Sidebar. The finder then switches to browse the the server for shares: "Connecting..." is displayed under the tool bar, with a "Share Screen..." and "Connect As..." buttons to the right.
At this point the "Connecting..." remains displayed with the spinning circle in the bottom right of the Finder window.... spinning. This situation continues for several minutes until is seems the system gives up.
If I click on the Path button on the Tool Bar, and go up to the Shared level, ALL the Shares on the Network are displayed, including all the Tiger Client machine shares. I can click on the triangle beside the Tiger Client's icon, and all the drives and home directories on the Mac are listed. All the client shares can be accessed without any issues. NOTE: There are no other Leopard clients on the LAN.
Prior to the Leopard upgrade, this client could connect to the Tiger server as well. All the other clients on the LAN can access the Tiger server also.
On the Leopard client I have tried clicking and the "Connect As..." button and using the menu "Connect to Server" and specifying the server's IP, and I get the same "Connecting..." message with a "non-connecting" result.
I can only assume that somehow the Account Name and password are not being passed correctly. But, using "Connect As..." should resolve that. However, "Connect As..." does not give me a user/password window!
If I check the AFP Access log on the Server, the only messages displayed are "Mounted Volume..." No messages in the error log, and no messages in the "Connections" section.
Can anyone help me figure out why the Leopard client can not connect to the Tiger Server?
My apologies if the description of my problem is a bit disjointed. I have been thrown into server admin and am learning "Trial by Fire".
Any help or suggestions on how to resolve this issue will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

OK. A quick update.
After waiting for about 10 minutes for the rotating circle in the bottom right corner to stop, I was able to click on the "Connect As..." button. It took another 10 minutes, but the Connect As window eventual popped up. I entered the Userid and Password (saving to Keychain) and was able to see all the sharepoints on the the server. I browsed all the connected drives and folders without issue.
I then disconnected from the server. Reviewing the AFP logs on the server shows messages for the connection Login and Logout.
I then tried to reconnect to the server, and again another 10 minutes wait, although this time the Leopard client eventually connected automatically with the proper User, as per the AFP logs confirms.
Although, the client can now connect to the server, for it to take 10 minutes will be unacceptable to management, not to mention the end user. Tiger clients can connect in a couple seconds!
Is there a way to reduce the Leopard login time to, say, a couple seconds, like it does with the Tiger clients?
Again, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

• Problems with AOL IMAP server connection on my BlackBerry Z10 STL100-3, and BB PlayBook 64GB WiFi

Problems with AOL IMAP server connection on my BlackBerry Z10 STL100-3, and BB PlayBook 64GB WiFi
Thursday 4:20am EST, 02-19-2015
Hi, My connection to the AOL IMAP server has suddenly failed - Says "Not Connected" on Accounts page
I haven't changed anything and this just started failing this morning.
I've saw same issue on my Blackberry PlayBook 64GB.
Is anyone else recently experiencing AOL IMAP Errors?
Solved!

Yes! Same thing happened suddenly to my Z10 this morning. No AOL.

• Weird internet problem / ssl connection error, site loads in safari not in firefox or other way around

I really can't figure out this problem. Search the internet tried all kinds of things, nothing help so far.
I have a Macbook Pro (Lion originally installed) running on Mavericks (all latest updates). SSD installed and the DVD tray is replaced by the original HDD.
The laptop wasn't running very smooth anymore so decided to give it a fresh Mavericks install (even though I know it's not really necessary for mac, it helped, everything is much faster except a weird internet problem came up).
After freshly installing Mavericks I couldn't get into my google account anymore, just wouldn't load. Tried Safari (use this normally) and Firefox and Chrome, this last was gave a SSL connection error, both Safari and FF said the website couldn't be loaded because the server didn't respond. For Gmail I use Mailplane which is just stuck on a white page. I tried repairing the keychain, repaired disk and disk permissions, cleaned browsers, turned off firewall and antivirus (Shopos) started in safe mode, checked time settings which were all good. Nothing of this helped. I even ended up creating a usb bootdisk for Mavericks, formatted the disk and reinstalled from the start just Mavericks and nothing else, started Safari, still the same problem. As even this didn't help I figured it's not worth reinstalling all software so put back my backup.
Now I ended up somehow only being able to use Gmail normally in Firefox, Chrome still gives SSL error and Safari can load the inbox, but I can't open any messages. I get the error there is a problem with the connection. If I try in Basic HTML mode it surprisingly does work.
You would say, just use Firefox, finished...but the thing is that sometimes random websites won't load in Firefox, when I load the same site in Safari it works perfectly.
O yes, I also tried the connect to my iPhone and use the Cellular data network, then it's no problem using Gmail in Safari normally. You would say it's a router problem, but I have another Macbook Pro (just one model later running Mountain Lion) this one works perfectly with every browser. Also my iPhone does everyting logged into the WiFi network.
You can understand I really have no clue what's going on here, I don't see any logic. I can only think of a hardware problem in my Macbook, but don't see how that could cause these problems.
I hope someone is ably to help me ?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

• Have 5 devices, only one apple ID, iCloud should be 5 gb per device not per account.

Do I really have to create multible id's in order to be able to backup using iCloud. I have 2 iPad, 1 iPhone and 2 iPod and I still only get 5 gb of storage, but if I create a new account for each device I get 5 Gb each? Why?

It's 5 GB per account, regardless of how many devices are connected to that account. If you need more space, Apple provides the option to buy additional storage. If you want each of your devices to sync the same email, contacts, calendars, reminders, notes, etc. then use just one account, otherwise get a different account for each device.

• Multiple from e-mailaddresses / one account / iphone configuration utility

I trie to configure my e-mail account on my iphone. This works fine, when there is one e-mailaddress per account. But when I want to configure it to have multiple from-e-mailaddresses aka aliases I can choose to sent my mail from, there I stuck.
What I tried till now but without any success is
use the "name1 <[email protected]>, name2 <[email protected]>" syntax
leaf it blank and do it manually when the profile is installed, what works, but still just for one e-mailaddress
who could help?

thx for your answer
at the provider end every thing is configured the way it should
you know the way to configure other e-mail-addresses in iOS manually: Preferences > Mail, Contacts, Calendar > yourMailAccount > yourMailAccount > E-Mail yourEMailAddress
There you can put in your aliases, which enables you to select, from which address you send your e-mail from
the same thing you can do in Apple Mail, with the "name1 [email protected], name2 [email protected]" syntax entered in the Email Address field in Account Information in the preferences
But what to do, if you want to configure your iPhone with the iphone configuration utility?
if you leaf the from-address blank, you can enter just one address, the above mentioned syntax, that works for Apple Mail, doesn't
And the question for the super hero out there: How to do this in addition with certificates?
