Leopard on 1st Gen G5

Has anyone installed Leopard on a (2004) 1st Gen G5 1.8 Processor with 768 MB of ram? If so, any problems? Thanks.

Hi Eugene
I had no problem at all and I just Updated to Leopard. Just make sure you do have a back up. I ran DW before and made sure I had no problems with the hard drive. You should be fine. PS if your running ShapeShifter make sure it is off
and all your login items are off

  • Leopard on 1st Gen G5 iMac

Has anyone installed Leopard on a (2004) 1st Gen G5 1.8 Processor with 768 MB of ram? If so, any problems? Thanks.

I installed Leopard on my 1st generation 2.0 Imac with 2G ram. Needless to say, I am back on Tiger now untill they can fix a mutitude of problems. Fans running all the times, activity monitor thinks the CPU is at 100% all the time, but at the Unix level it's at about 12-15%. Printer drivers don't work on my Lexmark Printer and it's not supported in Leopard. Thats just to mention the main issues, other are Applications shutting down when you carry out certain things. Also running Imovie 08 is a joke with leopard. You get the sninning wheel all the time when dragging through your clips. If it's not sorted in next release I will be returning Ilife08 and Leopard to apple shop and getting my money back (then maybee putting towards a new Imac). I think they released it to quickly and they have really let them self down. Your comments would be appreciated?

  • Leopard on 1st gen MacMini--circular restarts

Installing Leopard on my first gen MacMini (1 GB RAM). All goes well until the end. Then I get a screen telling me (in several languages) to turn off the machine and restart. I do that, and get that same screen, same message, again and again! Any suggestions about what is going on? Thanks.

Do yourself a huge favor and do a clean install, or at the very least an archive and install. Doing an upgrade has been a horror show for many people, including me. It installed, but within seconds of hitting the desktop, Finder would crash. Did an archive and intall, and so far (after one kernal panic anyway) it's been stable. This is on the G4 Powerbook. I don't dare put it on the work Macbook Pro yet though, partially because of the Windows connectivity issues.

  • Snow Leopard on 1st Gen MacBook Air is making it overheat.

Still have 7 of 80 gig available, but the entire bottom of the shell gets very hot and the processing slows to a crawl.  Suggestions?  Thank you.

Clear some space on your disc or get a bigger Hard Drive for a start. It is a rule of thumb to have at least 15% of your Drive empty for good performance. You are running well under that, so I would be pretty sure that is your problem.
Your heading also says Snow Leopard but your profile says Lion.
Simply have to move some data (quite a bit - music, pics or movies) to an external drive if you can't afford a larger drive.

Everytime I click on a video it says I need to update to the newest version of flash, but my computer doesn't support the updated version. So I feel like I'm in a Catch-22.
    Any suggestions?

Jay, you may very well be up a creek without a paddle.

  • 1st Gen iPod touch Keeps Having to Be Re-Registered with iTunes

My 1st Gen. iPod touch works very well, with one exception. Every few weeks I'll turn it on and I'll get the picture of the cable and the iTunes icon - which is what you get the first time you use your iPod touch and means it needs to be registered with iTunes. This will happen both if I plug it in to my charger and when I just simply turn it on with the power button. I'll then take the touch to my computer and use my syn cable and plug it in. When the iTunes window comes up, on the left column it shows my touch, but the name I'd given it has gone back to the default name. I'll rename it again, but again within a week or two the same thing happens again. I'm stumped. I'm using an iMac running Leopard 10.5.6 and a white MacBook, also with 10.5.6. All my software on the touch, MacBook and iMac are up to date. I have very few apps on my touch and lots of room left on it to store stuff. Can anyone help? Thanks.

    Hi Brenda,
That screen, with the iTunes icon and the USB cable, means the iPod is in recovery mode.
This article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808 provides more information about the mode and how-to use it to restore your iPhone or iPod touch.
Are you using any 3rd-party accessories with the iPod touch?
Does the accessory have the Made for iPod logo?
Try restoring the iPod again, setting it up as a new iPod, and testing it without any 3rd-party accessories.
If the issue persists, the iPod may need hardware repair. Just make a reservation to have a Genius take a look at it or call AppleCare.

    thanks.....
    I'm getting tired

I think my ipod comes from the same generation and it took a while before i got the right information. I have an old version of itunes(plus whatever other software is on the cd) and i think that is what made it work. I got the same error at some point and once it synced with itunes it went through a process to correct the problem. I got the ipod maybe two years ago so the information is sketchy. I synced and reset it i think via windows originally even though i am a linux user but i could not work out how to do it in linux then as i was pretty new to it. Plus the guy at the Apple shop told me it is better to do it in windows. Well they don't know linux. So maybe an older version of itunes might be the clue to solving this? I might have also changed the battery at that time ....
My ipod has been syncing with both windows(itunes) and Linux apps on many machines over the past two years. Anyway if i can think of more info i will let you know.

  • No video whatsover G5 1st gen iMac

My friend got this pristeen 1st gen iMac for free at a 2nd hand store outreach center. The HD and ram were missing and a I T tech we thought knew told us that was all it needed. I had no experience with anything Mac but I'm willing to learn. After installing 2 Gb of new PC 3200 400 mhz ram,new Western Digital 320 Gb 7200 rpm 32mb cache Sata hard drive, new apple wired keyboard, new Turtle USB Mac mouse and the brand new OS X Leopard disc and..... no video! I'm thinking this needs a replacement mobo but the mobo and capacitors are all looking great(appears new) so I don't think they're the problem. If I'm missing anything obvious please help. Possibly there's a video card missing and I don't realize it yet. Otherwise I'll be looking for one of those replacement G5 mobo's or a trade plus difference deal for another refurb or used Mac. Any ideas?

Is it starting up, but with no video? Or is it not starting up? I'm not certain an iMacG5 will handle a SATA disk drive successfully. Another possibility is that whoever had it before saw it die, salvaged the HD and RAM, and junked it. Sometimes you get what you pay for! You could get an external case for a SATA Hard disk, and maybe find someplace that would take the RAM in trade for some that's right for a new Mac, and be ahead to just buy a new one. If you're like me, I HATE to see one bite the dust with no hope of resuscitation!

  • 1st gen iPod touch not showing in iTunes 10.6

    Hi
though it was about time to update my music on my 1st gen iPod Touch, however, when i connected it to iTunes it does not show up.
    Is anyone able to assist?
I have tried hard resets and it doesn't work.
Have Apple stopped supporting the 1st gen Touch?
    Regards

I am having a similar issue. I have a 1st-generation iPod touch, and a MacBook running Snow Leopard (OS 10.6.3) and iTunes 9.1.1. It's a bit old now and the WiFi isn't very good, but my iPod touch still works perfectly, except that it doesn't show up in iTunes, which I discovered yesterday when I tried to sync some new music. I got my iTouch G1 the first week they came out and it worked perfectly with my iBook G4 running Tiger, and also worked perfectly with my new MacBook running Leopard which replaced the iBook when its logic board bit the dust. I recently updated to Snow Leopard (about a month ago now), and now my iTouch doesn't show up in my iTunes sidebar, but a volume shows up in Disk Utility that could only be this iPod and things do happen when I plug in the iPod (the first time I connected it since I added some Snow to my Leopard, iPhoto opened and prompted a download of a screenshot I'd taken with the iPod). I'm mostly writing this right now because the support page pertinent to this issue is down due to some sort of Apple web maintenance and I'm tired of getting the same error message. I actually have everything on my Mac backed up, and when I installed Snow Leopard I just did a basic installation but have been thinking of going back and doing a clean wipe and install and then getting the iTunes and iPhoto libraries et cetera off of my external HD. Would this fix my problem? I figure that since my iPod touch's files and system have been constant throughout this, it must be some issue with Snow Leopard, however before I wipe everything and have to set my system up again from scratch, I would like to know if this problem would be fixed by doing that or if there is some problem inherent in Snow Leopard that needs to be manually fixed.

  • Restoring 1st Gen Macbook Pro.  Please help!

I have a 1st Gen, 1.83 Core Duo Macbook Pro that I'm going to sell, but before I do, I'd like to restore the laptop to it's original factory settings.
When I go to do an "Erase and Install" from my original factory disk (no scratches), everything seems to be working fine until it gets to the install screen that says "Preparing the Disk." The install process just seems to freeze at this point. I can still move my mouse and it doesn't seem "frozen," other than the fact that there is no progress in the progress bar. I've waited over an hour and still no progress. I've shut the system down and rebooted from disk but when I come to the same part, the same thing happens.
Does anyone have any insight? Thanks in advance.
*The system came installed with Tiger, but I've upgraded to Leopard, and then to Snow Leopard since.

  • Apple TV 3rd Gen no longer sees Airport Express 1st gen in Airplay after update

Apple TV 3rd gen was connected to AirPort Express 1st gen via WiFi, drove a video device via HDMI
and sent audio to the AirPort using Airplay and selecting the AirPort Express under Speakers.
I could adjust the volume with the AppleTV remote.
Apple TV was stored unused for a while.
After powering on yesterday, I ran the update.
Now Apple TV is connected to the Airport Express via WiFi
but Airport Express doesn't show in AirPlay settings.
I can still use AirPlay from my MacBook running Snow Leopard.
There are no updates available for the AirPort

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    Restart your mobile device.

  • Using 1st gen airport express with mavericks

When I upgraded to Mavericks, the updated Airport Utility dosen't support my version of airport express 1st generation. The old version of airport utility is not supported by mavericks. There is a version on the website that appears it may work, but I can't install it because their is a new version already installed. I cannot delete the new version, because the sytem blocks it with a message that it is necessary for the operating system.

Mavericks certainly will support a 1st Gen version of the AirPort Express, so chances are......you do not have a 1st Gen Express.
Please check the model number on the side of your Express. It starts with an "A" followed by four numbers.
A 1st Gen version is A1264. I imagine that you have A1084 or A1088, which are much older versions than the 1st Gen "n" Express, which was introduced in 2008.
Witht the A1084 or A1088, you will need to use another Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or another PC to be able to administer the older AirPorts.

  • 1st Gen iPad problems with Pages

I have a 1st Gen iPad and have the Pages app, but now that the new Pages app has been issued for iOS7 I can no longer open docs from the cloud in the older app. I saved the docs from my mac as a pages09 file and still can't get them to open. What now?

I spent about 4+ hours with Tech Support on this issue.  There is no luck according to their Senior Technician. He spend time rummaging over the internet offering me solutions with 3rd party apps to get 'iCloud" back with pages, but none of them worked with an "Offline" mode.  This was a big hinderance on myself as well. I am a Tech Writer and had a lot of documents that I needed to send to my Editor...he uses Pages as well...  Once I edited my documents in the New Pages, he couldn't opened them...this is not good.  I know newspapers all around are probably feeling this burn right now.
I have found a solution however, but it requires a previous purchase.  I bought Pages 09 back on 10.6.3 Snow Leopard long before the Mac App Store was opened to Snow Leopard 10.6.8  What I did what continue using that program, denying the update to Pages in OSX Mavericks.  Still though with all the documents I had to open each individual one and resave them as .DOC format then reimport them into iCloud after cleaning out the /Library/Mobile Documents/Pages section.
Now as I am a Tech Writer, I do NOT expect the average user to figure this out or even need to figure this out, this was an unacceptable move by Apple and after looking at the specs, there is NOTHING that would prevent them from making Pages 10 Backwardscompatible for Pages 09 users or add Pages 10 support to iPad.  Since they ONLY allow it to run on iOS7 Devices, kind forces you to run out an buy a new iPad2 or higher.... since I am quite confortable with my 1st Generation, I will continue using Pages 09'  and if worst comes to worse, I will roll back to Mountain Lion,  there was no update feature on that one and never did it bother me about upgrading Pages 09....

  • MBA 1st Gen and Lion Performance

    Hi,
Does anyone have experience on updating 1st Gen MBA to OSX Lion? How is performance feeling and memory consuption?
Mine have almoust 300mb RAM left and with Lion this should be worst. Correct?
    Cheers, Thanks

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
I recommend you to keep Snow Leopard, because if Snow Leopard consumes most of the RAM, Lion will consume more memory. Also, note that your MacBook Air has got soldered RAM, so it's impossible to increase RAM

  • 1st Gen iPod Nano not appearing in iTunes, but DOES appear as a disk

    Good Afternoon All,
I have a 1st Gen Nano 1GB that up until iTunes 9 was syncing fine, but now - Nada.
The Nano is in disk mode and appears just fine in Finder, I can eject it and it's charging fine but iTunes 9 won't see it.
    I have:
    - reset the iPod (not restored because it won't show up in iTunes)
    - updated iTunes to r9 and checked for any other outstanding updates
    - Re-installed iTunes 9
    - this morning I applied the 10.6.1 update
    - The update forced a reboot of the iMac so I have rebooted since the issue started
I can't do most of what is in this KB article because it won't appear in iTunes (hard to restore otherwise, right?): http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1410
My iPod Touch's (both 1Gen) connect to the same USB port/cable combination just fine and applied the 3.1 update to both through the same port/cable.
I don't want to restore the Nano if I don't have to, I have some Nike+ run data on there I don't want to lose, but I suppose I can pull it off in disk mode first if I have to restore.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Fortunately I solved my own problem, but unfortunately it took an iTunes downgrade.
My daughter's iBook was getting dog slow so I decided to pull a "PC" and reload fresh Leopard to clear out the gunk and get her to trim the fat from her iTunes and other directories and clear the mung left over from the original Tiger to Leopard upgrade.
As part of that I initially skipped the iTunes 9 update and connected the iPod to iTunes 8 - it was recognized instantly and uploaded my Nike+ data.
I did notice that the Nano is still PC formatted from back in the day before I switched to Mac. I am going to try connecting it to my iTunes 9 iMac again, and if nothing comes up I am going to restore it in iTunes 8 to Mac format and then see what happens in iTunes 9.
    I will update here.
