Leopard on 1st gen MacMini--circular restarts

Installing Leopard on my first gen MacMini (1 GB RAM). All goes well until the end. Then I get a screen telling me (in several languages) to turn off the machine and restart. I do that, and get that same screen, same message, again and again! Any suggestions about what is going on? Thanks.

Do yourself a huge favor and do a clean install, or at the very least an archive and install. Doing an upgrade has been a horror show for many people, including me. It installed, but within seconds of hitting the desktop, Finder would crash. Did an archive and intall, and so far (after one kernal panic anyway) it's been stable. This is on the G4 Powerbook. I don't dare put it on the work Macbook Pro yet though, partially because of the Windows connectivity issues.

Has anyone installed Leopard on a (2004) 1st Gen G5 1.8 Processor with 768 MB of ram? If so, any problems? Thanks.

I installed Leopard on my 1st generation 2.0 Imac with 2G ram. Needless to say, I am back on Tiger now untill they can fix a mutitude of problems. Fans running all the times, activity monitor thinks the CPU is at 100% all the time, but at the Unix level it's at about 12-15%. Printer drivers don't work on my Lexmark Printer and it's not supported in Leopard. Thats just to mention the main issues, other are Applications shutting down when you carry out certain things. Also running Imovie 08 is a joke with leopard. You get the sninning wheel all the time when dragging through your clips. If it's not sorted in next release I will be returning Ilife08 and Leopard to apple shop and getting my money back (then maybee putting towards a new Imac). I think they released it to quickly and they have really let them self down. Your comments would be appreciated?

    Hi Eugene
I had no problem at all and I just Updated to Leopard. Just make sure you do have a back up. I ran DW before and made sure I had no problems with the hard drive. You should be fine. PS if your running ShapeShifter make sure it is off

Still have 7 of 80 gig available, but the entire bottom of the shell gets very hot and the processing slows to a crawl.  Suggestions?  Thank you.

Clear some space on your disc or get a bigger Hard Drive for a start. It is a rule of thumb to have at least 15% of your Drive empty for good performance. You are running well under that, so I would be pretty sure that is your problem.
Your heading also says Snow Leopard but your profile says Lion.
Simply have to move some data (quite a bit - music, pics or movies) to an external drive if you can't afford a larger drive.
    Good Luck

  • Apple TV 3rd Gen no longer sees Airport Express 1st gen in Airplay after update

Apple TV 3rd gen was connected to AirPort Express 1st gen via WiFi, drove a video device via HDMI
and sent audio to the AirPort using Airplay and selecting the AirPort Express under Speakers.
I could adjust the volume with the AppleTV remote.
Apple TV was stored unused for a while.
After powering on yesterday, I ran the update.
Now Apple TV is connected to the Airport Express via WiFi
but Airport Express doesn't show in AirPlay settings.
I can still use AirPlay from my MacBook running Snow Leopard.
There are no updates available for the AirPort

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    Restart your mobile device.

  • Apple TV 1st Gen can no longer connect to wireless networks

My Apple TV (1st Gen) has recently lost the ability to connect to either of our wireless networks at home.  I rean the diagnostics at the reset screen and the Apple TV says it is performing normally.  In the settings, whenever I attempt to connect to a wireless network, I am now only offered "Other..." as a choice. Proceeding to the next screen, I enter the name of the network closest to the Apple TV -- an Airport Extreme set up for 5 GHz that this Apple TV connected with daily up until 2 days ago.  The Airport base station is perfoming normally, as my MacBook Pro can see it and establish a network connection without any difficulty.  The issue is limited to the Apple TV.  I did a Factory Restore, and now when I go to Wireless Network > "Other..." > Enter the name of the wireless network"  the resuit is always the same, and error message stating: "There was a problem connecting to the network. Check your settings and try again. (-4)".
This message comes up almost immediately, without requesting a WiFi password -- suggesting to me that this Apple TV has lost the ability to connect to ANY wireless network due to a hardware failure.
Q: Has anyone else in the Support Community had a similar experience with their 1st Gen Apple TV, and if so, did you find a solution to it?
Note: When I first noticed the connction to this Apple TV had gone stale (greyed out in the iTunes Airplay Speakers list), and prior to doing the Factory Restore, I could play back iTunes content stored on the hard drive, but could not connect to the local wireless networks.  I noticed that the Apple TV was running very hot -- it has alwasy run pretty hot to the touch.
If this Apple TV has died, I will get a 3rd Gen Apple TV, but wiill then have to work through the HDMI to Composite video + Audio issues, as this Apple TV is connected to our older (non-HDMI) TV.

Follow-up:  Able to connect with ethernet cable, downloaded software updates, connected to iTunes, and synchec content.
Next, disconnected the ethernet cable.  ATV1 froze and was restarted using the Menu + ( - ) combo on the remote.  Re-ran diagnostics yeilds: Apple TV is working fine.
Restarted, then went to configure the Wirelss settings.   Apple TV once again does not show either of the two wireless networks.  Selecting "Other..." and entering the SSID yields the same immediate response:
"There was a problem connecting to the network. Check your settings and try again. (-4)"
No change on the wireless front :-(   Bummer.
Looks like an ethernet connection is the only option left to continue using this Apple TV 1st Gen.
Thanks for your help. -- Paul

  • Apple TV (1st gen) will not connect to iTunes

I am at wit's end. Until a couple of days ago, my 1st gen Apple TV connected fine to iTunes. Now, it will not connect no matter what. I have tried the following:
    1) restart both ATV and my machine (Win 7 running iTunes 10.7)
    2) restored ATV factory settings and reinstalled software
    3) hard-wire via ethernet to my computer (which some articles seemed to indicate should work - nothing happened)
    4) hard-wired both my cpu and ATV to a router - nothing shows up
    5) removed and reinstalled all Apple programs, including iTunes, QT and ancillary
    6) vaired between hard-wired internet connection and wireless for ATV
    7) did everything on this page, including open ports manually http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1453
Most frustrating of all, my wife sees the device instantly in her iTunes. AGHH!

Same thing happened to me, starting right after I  updated the Apple TV firmware. I restarted both devices to no avail. I can, however, play my itunes library content from the apple TV's "computer" app. So there must be some kind of connection. What I've lost is the ability to stream music from iTunes using AppleTV as an "airplay" device.

  • Safari 5.1.2 Unusable on 1st Gen MBA

After upgrading, Safari has become impossible to use. Spinning rainbow wheel and intolerably long page loading times... When Safari is running, the whole OS becomes sluggish and sometimes locks up for minutes at a time.
    Restarted Safari.
    Ran Disk Permissions.
    Rebooted Computer.
    Ran Software Update.
Turned off extensions (only running one).
    Deleted the extension.
    Installed latest Java.
    Installed latest Flash.
Installed ClickToPlugin to avoid running Flash, Silverlight or Shockwave.
Safari 5.1.2 runs perfectly fine on my new 27" iMac running Lion.
It also runs perfectly well on a Guest account on my 1st Gen MacBook Air.
    What am I missing here?

    Hi Sky....
Spinning rainbow wheel and intolerably long page loading times..
Try disabling the Lion "resume" feature.
    Open System Preferences > General
Deselect:   Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps
Now from the Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
And back to the menu bar click Safari > Reset Safari. Select the top 5 boxes then click Reset.
If nothing above helped. go to Safari > Preferences then select the Security tab.
Deselect:  Enable plug-ins. Quit then relaunch Safari to test. If that made a difference then you have one or more Safari add ons causing the problem.
Troubleshooting help here > Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Keep in mind, third party Safari plugins do not apply to extensions.
And try troubleshooting the Safari preference file (.plist)
    Quit Safari.
Go to ~/Library/Preferences then move the com.apple.Safari.plist file to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari. If that made a difference, move that .plist file to the Trash. If not, move it back to the Preferences folder.

  • 1st Gen iPod touch Keeps Having to Be Re-Registered with iTunes

My 1st Gen. iPod touch works very well, with one exception. Every few weeks I'll turn it on and I'll get the picture of the cable and the iTunes icon - which is what you get the first time you use your iPod touch and means it needs to be registered with iTunes. This will happen both if I plug it in to my charger and when I just simply turn it on with the power button. I'll then take the touch to my computer and use my syn cable and plug it in. When the iTunes window comes up, on the left column it shows my touch, but the name I'd given it has gone back to the default name. I'll rename it again, but again within a week or two the same thing happens again. I'm stumped. I'm using an iMac running Leopard 10.5.6 and a white MacBook, also with 10.5.6. All my software on the touch, MacBook and iMac are up to date. I have very few apps on my touch and lots of room left on it to store stuff. Can anyone help? Thanks.

    Hi Brenda,
That screen, with the iTunes icon and the USB cable, means the iPod is in recovery mode.
This article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808 provides more information about the mode and how-to use it to restore your iPhone or iPod touch.
Are you using any 3rd-party accessories with the iPod touch?
Does the accessory have the Made for iPod logo?
Try restoring the iPod again, setting it up as a new iPod, and testing it without any 3rd-party accessories.
If the issue persists, the iPod may need hardware repair. Just make a reservation to have a Genius take a look at it or call AppleCare.

  • 1st Gen Ipod Shuffle not updating with iTunes 7.0whatever

My 1st gen. shuffle was doing just fine updating from my iTunes playlist with the older version of iTunes. Then last night I upgraded to 7.0whatever the latest version is and now when I plug in the shuffle to update, I get the usual updating iPod message and then I get the message that it's done...but....nothing has been loaded onto the shuffle.
If I change the playlist for the shuffle to load from, I don't get any little spinning circles next to the song titles and iTunes will freeze up and I'll have to end the program from Task Manager.
I've restored the shuffle to it's original factory settings (even using the special restore program), I've uninstalled and restarted and reinstalled iTunes. I've deleted the temp directory, restarted, reinstalled iTunes. No luck.
The shuffle does work though on an older computer that has an older version of iTunes.
What's in the new version of iTunes that's not agreeing with Win XP and how do I fix it?
    Thanks for your help!

Well, I have that problem too. My shuffle holds about 125 songs or so, yet I've noticed there are always a good 20 or so songs that won't play, no matter how many times I load them onto the device. I have had that problem since I inherited it from a friend.
My new problem is that every time I plug my iPod into iTunes, it no longer updates the playcount for songs. In other words, if I load a song that I've heard 3 times, hear it twice during the day, and replug in my iPod at night, it used to update that song's playcount in the library to 5, but now they still read 3. It's also failing to update the "date last played" field.
I use those to help make sure that I don't load the same songs over and over again by creating a custom playlist that will comb out songs played in the last few days and have a very high play count. Since these are no longer updating, I've noticed that I keep arriving at work only to find my iPod has the same or similar songs as the day before, and dude, if I wanted that, I'd listen to the radio!

  • Win7 Not Installing Drivers for 1st Gen Touch

    Hello folks,
I've been trying to get my 1st Gen Touch up and running in the most recent version of iTunes, installed onto a dual-boot machine (32-bit Vista and Win7). In Vista, the Touch works perfectly. Flip over to Win7, and no dice. I can hear the chime sounding that a USB device has been plugged in and removed, but at no point does any drivers actually install, no info pop-up that new hardware detected, and no iPod listed in the USB devices of Device Manager.
I've tried following the directives of http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1852 to no effect; everything looks to be in order. I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes. The only, and I mean only, sign of life I've seen out of Win7 is the one time I managed to fluke my way into Recovery Mode on the Touch, at which point it was recognized as a generic iPod in Win7. I just didn't think that a recovery wipe and reinstall would be a necessary step to a normal installation.
Further, I've also tried running the iTunes program in compatibility mode for Vista, and with Admin privileges for Win7 mode, to no effect. Does anyone have any ideas on what I'm overlooking? I know the hardware works; this has to be software...
    Thanks!

I got it working, though the steps I had to use were draconian in measure, and not what I would reasonably expect the average user to endure just to get their iPods working. Since the Touch was showing signs of life in Factory Restore mode, I let it do that once. Wiped all the data out of it, but errored on the reinstall. Curious, I thought. I had Device Manager up at the time, and saw a generic 'iPod' entry in Portable Devices.
Okay, fair enough... I restart the factory restore, wait for the generic 'iPod' entry. Right-click, Properties, 'Update Driver', search automatically. Suddenly, lo and behold, the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver shows up under USB Devices, and my Touch starts working as pretty as you please. I'm fortunate that I can go back into Vista to re-sync to get my music and apps back, but at least it's working now. Might I suggest seeing if there's a less Nuclear Option process for accomplishing the same goal?

    I'm getting tired

I think my ipod comes from the same generation and it took a while before i got the right information. I have an old version of itunes(plus whatever other software is on the cd) and i think that is what made it work. I got the same error at some point and once it synced with itunes it went through a process to correct the problem. I got the ipod maybe two years ago so the information is sketchy. I synced and reset it i think via windows originally even though i am a linux user but i could not work out how to do it in linux then as i was pretty new to it. Plus the guy at the Apple shop told me it is better to do it in windows. Well they don't know linux. So maybe an older version of itunes might be the clue to solving this? I might have also changed the battery at that time ....
My ipod has been syncing with both windows(itunes) and Linux apps on many machines over the past two years. Anyway if i can think of more info i will let you know.
