Leopard on a DP G5... all is well
Hello all, I thought I'd post up my positive experience of installing 10.5 on my Mac.
I hope it will make a change to some of the bad experiences some folks have had.
Okay, my machine: Powermac G5, dual 2.5Ghz, 2Gb Ram, 2 x 150 Gb internal Drives
I started by doing a complete back up of my 10.4 system drive to an external Firewire drive, using Disk Utility.
I then backed up essential files and libraries (and some game folders) on the same drive.
After this I inserted the 10.5 install disk, and did a clean install, re-partitioning my main internal drive.
Once Leopard had installed, I used Migration Assistant to bring over my apps etc from my 10.4 backup.
Being a .Mac member, I then synced the machine. Then put on the 10.5.1 patch and restarted.
Everything came up okay, and machine performance was good.
I imported my mailboxes into mail from the 10.4 backup, and made some minor system tweaks, and can safely say everything is okay. Coverflow in finder is fine, although I'm having an issue with magnification of the Dock (as in, it won't!), but apart from that I have no complaints. My machine is back to being as usable as it was before I did the update.
All is well, and I have no complaints. All apps work fine (iWork stuff, iMovie etc. Even MS Word and the like)

To enlarge on DP's response, install discs are machine specific, one from an intel MBP won't work, nor will one from a different iMac G5, only the disc that came with your machine or one from a machine that is exactly the same age and model as yours will work. A grey disc from another machine won 't work, only the retail Black disc will.

All was well until the events I entered on the phone were showing up in Outlook, but not the other way around. When I rip a CD to iTunes all goes well until I click on All Albums. If there are other artists named as well as the Title Artist, I end up with what appears as 16
Albums with 1 track instead of 1 Album with 16 tracks. Can I fix this ?Had a similar problem with two tracks from a cd being segregated in a separate list, but with the same album title and artwork as the other 19 tracks. I found that by double clicking the artist field next to the album icon you can then edit that info. In your case it sounds as if you might want to erase the artist info altogether. Once you have done that, all the tracks magically group together, as they should have done in the first place. Oh there might be a dialog box first, asking if you really want to do this.

Microsoft Office 2004 (Word) unable to save files
I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and create a new document but I cannot save it. I reinstalled Word but that didn’t help. Then went to the Internet and found at least one other Mac user having the same problem which it suggests is caused by a recent Mac Security Update:

So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”. I contacted Apple but they were unable to help.
How can I get rid of this error message?Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
#2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk of your internal drive (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway) or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
#3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

I have installed itunes 10.7 several times, all goes well. After reeboot, I go to check for updates and it still wants to update to version 10.7! I cant sync to my iphone4 because I get an error message saying I need version 10.6.3 or later. Help
Thank you for getting me started on the track by mentioning "Revo" Uninstaller. The results of "Revo" spoke volumns on why a successful install of ITunes is so difficult to achieve. It is the evil "BONJOUR".
I then tripped upon the following site by Apple and the detailed directions (I read, printed, re-read and followed the instructions. It was intense) brought a successful ITunes, Quick Time and the lovely Bonjour home. Thank you for the start JD42.

Just updated my iPhone 4 from IOS 6.1.3 to 7.1.2, I know I am behind the times, but I got there eventually! All seems well but I have one specific problem and hope someone can offer a helpful suggestion.
On opening the app "Find my iPhone" I add my password and sign in, to be greeted with a screen that says;
"Update Find My iPhone. A new version of Find My iPhone is available from the App. Store. You must install the update to continue using the app. Update now"
On hitting the "Update now" button I'm taken to the relevant page on the App Store, to be told that I cannot update as it needs IOS8 to be able to continue and as my iPhone is only a 4 cannot install IOS8.
I'm left going around in circles. The only thing would be to delete the app, but looks like I could not re-install the version I would need. Any body have any thoughts or suggestions? (Apart from updating my phone, I have a few months left on the contract!)

I have tried as you suggested, and when opening the "purchased" apps some have the icloud logo next to them, but I only have "OPEN" against "Find My iPhone". When opening it up, it goes through the same routine; needs to be updated before proceeding, and wouldn't update because I don't have IOS8.
Anything else I could try, or am I doomed!

All was well until 10.7 + MAMP + xCode. Now...misery. Why?
I'm a port from the PC universe. Been loving my iMac since 10.6 for about 2 years now. Recently, I decided to stop programming on the PC and move to the Mac and open source, namely PHP to start. That mean installing MAMP. No harm. Then, I entered the world of debuggin PHP without a debugger. Not fun. So, I joined the installed xDebug. Whoa! Problems all over. Issues Galore. Addressed the issues, joined the $99 developer community, downloaded xCode (for the compiler), upgraded to 10.7 Lion and fixed all sorts of stuff: paths, ini files, got pear working, php-config, phpize, xdebug.so extension.
Now that xdebug works, I downloaded JetBrains PHPStorm for my debugger along with Dreamweaver CS4 that I've owned all along. All should be well and good, but not so.
1. All of my Adobe CS products went to ****. I had to re-install and lost 2 yrs worth of customizations, plug-ins etc. That was Adobe's best suggestion.
2. My external disk drives locked up, there were now permission issues on all, but my internal drive, so I couldn't get to my Time Machine backups. In any case, I had changed so much I'm not sure it would have helped.
3. Reformatted all external drives. Lost all, but nothing there was that precious. One drive is a scratch disk, the other was my backups. I immediately made another TM backup. All went well after re-format.
4. Download OS X.7.3....Whoa, more issues. Mainly permissions. Adobe went to **** again, but I'd already lost everything that mattered, so I trudged through the permissions thing (Library and System seemed to be the primary offenders here). User System now exists everywhere and user "Me" is gone, as is user "Administrators" group. Tried getting rid of user system. Bad, bad idea. Started over, then just tried to add Me and Administrators group. Worked out.
5. Reinstalled Adobe a 2nd time.
6. Now, some of my drivers, namely HP Scanjet aren't working, download, reinstall, fix that.
7. Reinstalling HP drivers mucked up permissions again and I get all these Library permission issues on bootup. Fixed that for the 3rd or 4th time now.
There's more, but you get the idea. All I wanted to do in the beginning was use PHP 5.3 and be able to debug it. Now I have a "hard way" degree in debugging, Unix, and the mac OS. And, I still don't know what I've done wrong.
This permissions issue keeps cropping up. I've done the Verify/Repair Permissions thing a few times, same for the hard drive. doesn't seem to have an noticible effect.
Is there some sort of utility out there (or already here) that will help me get my machine stable once again. I've logged probably 40 hours doing the above and this is darn near reminding me of my life with a PC--but I had 30 years of driving that crate, so it wasn't as frustrating.
It's all about permissions and my user being installed, or not, in various locations that I'm guessing it used to be installed in. Plus, it seems RW permissions have changed to R. I've used Terminal to fix some of this along the way, and get all working correctly, but I'm scared now to turn off the darn machine, or to upgrade "anything" on it.
Advice is welcome.

PS: Crap, I see a 10.7.4 on the OS dropdown. I could have gone all night without seeing that!It sounds like you're randomly setting file permissions without any idea of what they should be. In nearly all cases, they should be whatever the software installer makes them. On very rare occasions, it may be necessary to repair the permissions of system files after running a defective third-party installer. It's certainly necessary if you've "mucked up" those permissions yourself. You may have mucked them up so badly that they can no longer be repaired in the usual way. In that case, boot from your recovery partition (command-R at startup) and run Disk Utility. That, at least, is safe from being mucked up, but it won't fix everything; only Mac OS system files.
If a third-party product doesn't work, reinstall it, and resist the temptation to change the permissions. If it still doesn't work, contact the developer for support.
Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Back up all data now. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to its present state
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset the password.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select ▹ Restart from the menu bar. -
Since the most recent Firefox update 3.6.8 my banking institution no longer shows as having a secure encrypted connection, however, my bank assures me all is well with their certificates and that is a problem with the new Firefox browser update, can you give me some idea why it is doing this?

I downloaded later version of IPad software to watch a film. I backed up on itunes. All going well until i try to restore from itunes and all it says is you have used 5 authorisations. I've tried deauthorising and it then says I have been successful and now i have 0 computers authorised. I have two apple ID's so tried both. I cant locate anywhere it says deauthorise all. i've followed all help instructions to the letter over and over again. I am going on holiday thursday and cant get anything on my IPAD other syncing with Itunes but then on computer screen says cant sync unless deauthorise one of your 5 computers. Nightmare. I've spent hours since sunday and no further forward. Anyone any clues?

There are a few restrictions when it comes to deauthorize all option. One of them is that there has to be at least 2 accounts signed in. Another option is that you can only deauthorize all once a year. NikkiI did try to uninstall and reinstall. It messed up my computer. I had to "RESTORE" from the prior days backup. This was not helpful at all. I'm used to losing all my stuff when I connect to iTunes, that's a whole other issue, but now I'm completely banned from any updates to my phone at all. Geeze.......

I am making a movie from still pictures. I used no theme and then started adding pictues. When I played it back, all was well. Then I added a few more pictures and some sound. When I play iot back it plays just so far and then the sound continues, but the screen turns green or the pictures break up into colors.
Sorry, everyone. I think I may have figured out what it was all down to...........
I had left the IDE ribbon cable plugged into my third HDD, with the power cable unplugged. I did this so as not to endanger my years of work on the third drive, until Windows had setup. I have in the past, accidentally chosen the wrong partiton to format, so this seemed a good way to avoid it from then on.
This was not a problem on my old system, but it seems this system doesn't like it.
I must have left the drive completely unplugged, the times Windows did setup. Amazing really. I couldn't see the woods for the trees.
Anyway, I'm sorry to have bothered everyone with my problem.

I am using IDE drives until I can afford SATA. But many thanks for the heads-up on the NF4-SATA compliance, I'll be sure to bare that in mind.
I didn't actually check the NVRAID/IDE ROM version before updating the bios, so I have no idea if the revision was changed when Liveupdate flashed the Bios, I'm afraid. I didn't know they would be updated at the same time.

I am new to Mac. I own an iphone and an ipad but have always used a PC for my business use. I bought a used Powerbook G4 and all is well EXCEPT I cannot get a program to download from a CD. I think it's an easy fix so HELP!
A few questions ....
What is the program you are trying to download? It is a mac version?
Is this a vendor's CD or a copy or ?
What error message or other indication do you get that says the download won't happen?
