Leopard on older Laptop Macs

Would anyone recommend installing Leopard (with Tiger archived for older applications) on an older laptop computer or would this result in a slower running computer? Thanks for any ideas

How old? As long as it meets the system requirements, 10.5 may even run faster than 10.4. The system does take a bit more RAM than 10.4. AFA, archiving for use of older apps, it depends how old... 10.5 will not run Classic but it will run many older apps. I'm running apps like MS Office X, Acrobat Pro 6 and Toast 6 on 10.5.

  • Greetings: I have just acquired an older mini mac (2006 1.66 ghz core 2 duo) Anyway, it had Tiger 10.4 on it and the Bluetooth worked.  I upgraded to Snow Leopard and everything works fine - except Bluetooth. The Bluetooth icon isn't there. Any ideas?

    Greetings:
I have just acquired an older mini mac (2006 1.66 ghz core 2 duo) Anyway, it had Tiger 10.4 on it and the Bluetooth worked for the wireless Apple keyboard and mouse.  I upgraded to Snow Leopard and everything works fine - everything except Bluetooth.
The Bluetooth icon does not exist in the System Preferenc screen.
I tried to download Bluetooth from Apple site but the message I got told me that I didn't need it.
Under Finder, Utilities, I found Bluetooth File Exchange but the message I got was that I had to connect a Bluetooth device to my computer.
I have to admit that I have no idea what's going on here.  I am hoping to avert the need to try another complete re-install of Snow Leopard.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Puzzled is a polite word for it.
Thanks Barry - I found the file and trie to send it to trash.  The response: (This item cannot be trashed as it it owned by the system).
After dancing around with PRAM and SMC and turning on while holding the power-cntrl-option-shift and heavens knows what else, I now have the Bluetooth symbol on the top of the menu bar but it is ghoseted and has a squiggly line through it.   This, I didn't have before so I read this as some progress.  It notes that "Bluetooth is not available">
However, the Bluetooth icon is still missing from the System Preferences window - you know, between "network" and "sharing".
You note that you reckon the issue is not software based and you may be correct.  The reason that I wonder about that though, is that before I installed Snow Leopard, the keyboard and mouse both paired with the box under the Tiger 10.4.  That leads me to conclude that hardware is functional and that there is some screwy little bit of software that is not cooperating.
If I could delete Bluetooth from the system and re-install a fresh version, that might help.  Or, is there a way I can use the Snow Leopard install disc and only load in Bluetooth?
    I'm stumped.
    Thanks for your time

  • Install Leopard on a laptop with a broken DVD drive

I went to install Leopard on an older laptop (PB G5) only to discover it had a broken DVD drive. I tried to install it from my intel MBP (running Snow Leopard) via ethernet, firewire, and also via a flash drive, all with no success.
It used to be easy to do this with earlier versions of OS X. Is it still possible to do this? If so, can you tell me how?
    Thanks.

I'll assume you mean PowerBook G4; as a PowerBook G5 was never produced.
    1) Put the DVD in your MacBook Pro.
    2) Boot the MacBook Pro while holding down T.
    3) Hook the MacBook Pro and the PB together with a FireWire cable.
    4) Boot up the PB while holding down the Option key.
    5) Select the DVD to boot from, and boot up. Install.
This is all assuming that you are using a retail Leopard DVD (starry pattern with a big X on it.) A grey coloured Leopard DVD that shipped with a new Intel Mac will not work on any PowerPC Mac.

  • Install Leopard & Tiger on different Mac.

I just purchased Macbook (Leopard). Usually when we purchase a Mac computer, the OS will include. Can I Install Leopard on my old Mac computer (MacBook Pro-Santa), and Tiger on my new Macbook? I just purchased Macbook (Leopard). Usually when we purchase a Mac computer, the OS will include. Can I Install Leopard on my old Mac computer (MacBook Pro-Santa), and Tiger on my new Macbook? I need some opinion. Thanks. Sorry for my English.

To expand a bit on Niel's answer, you cannot instal an OS on any machine that is older than the machine itself. If your machine comes with Leopard, you can't put Tiger on it, and the Leopard install discs that come with your new MacBook are machine specific and won't work with your old machine.

  • Trying to install Leopard server on my Mac mini

I'm a registered Apple Select Developer and I'm trying to install Leopard Server on a Mac mini I just picked up the other day. Is there a way to do this using the image or do I have to burn a DVD in order to do the install? The image is over 5GB's so I'd need to get a dual layer disk.

Is this just for a test?
If so you can create 3 partitions, one a bootable volume the second partition a place to restore the Leopard image and the third partition to install the new software you restored on the second partition. You do loose two small volumes temporarily, but you can make them relatively small since these are only used for installation purposes. The details can be found on the developer site under " leopardclient_9a377a_seednote.rtf".
I've done this on older machines with no CD players installed.

  • Macbook or older laptop.....

This may seem like a no brainer, but consider my dilemna....
    I need a laptop to:
    a) take with me on the road and while Im traveling
    b) serve as a mobile extension of my studio, when artists cant make it to mine
    c) eventually serve as a dedicated show computer running Serrato or final scratch
I primarily run Logic Express and find myself using reason, live, etc less and less, but still might need one of those programs while im mobile
Should I buy a new macbook and pay the crossgrade fee for logic, as well as restrict myself to universal apps, and roll the dice on their first version of it?
Or should I just try to find an older powerbook or even ibook, pay way less for it, run all of my software with no hassle, but risk not having applecare for it
Option C is not as immediatley important
I would also want to be able to seamlessly transfer files between my dektop at my studio and my laptop.....this is paramount
I dont care about burning dvd's or games, graphics, and running windows....
All I care about is making music easily, moving songs back and forth between both computers, and using itunes, iweb (to keep my site updated) and logic while on the road
Again, I may have to use live or reason once and awhile
destop with laptop   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   I want to have a mobile extension of my desktop

    Welcome to apple forum,
From the way you describe it, look like you are a professional on that field.
So I suggest go with MacBook, it will have longer life span and more and more software are going universal (i know some are free upgrade and some aren't), but you'll getting back what you paid for with more productivity and more compatibility with newer plug-ins years to come.
And since Logic is also from apple, I believe they designed it with apple user in mind and it is not the first Logic, just a newer version that can runs universal. If it was the first logic like logic 1.0, then you might consider to wait, but it was there a quite some time.
And I think MacBook is the cheapest solution up to date compare to MAcBookPro.
    Good Luck.

  • Can I install Snow Leopard (downgrade) on the mac book pros that are released since the 24 oct

    Hi,
it ist possivle to downgrade/ install Snow Leopard on the current Mac Book Pros that are now sold on the apple store?
I knew they are improved since the 24 oct 2011 but did it change the firmware too?
    Thanks,
    Anna

According to this http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237 the Late-2011 MBPs have the same EFI-version than the Early-2011 ones ( MBP81.0047.B24 EFI 2.3) but different (updated) SMC-versions.
And since the Late-2011 MBPs ship with OSX Lion 10.7.2 chances are slim that an older OSX version will work.

  • How to install Snow Leopard on a 2009 Mac Pro which has Mountain Lion?

The 2009 Mac Pro that I just bought has Mountain Lion. For many reasons, I do not want to have Mountain Lion on my machine. I have been using Snow Leopard for years and I like it fine. I have my Snow Leopard install DVDs. I cannot get this machine to accept Snow Leopard, which must be just another undesirable aspect of Mountain Lion, bacause this machine must have shipped with some variant of Leopard/ Snow Leopard to begin with. Here's what happens when I put the Snow Leopard Install DVD in the Superdrive:
    1) First, I held down the "C" key at startup to start from a disc. It showed me a window which said "Mac OS X can't be installed on this computer".
    2) Then I started it with Mountain Lion and then put in the Snow Leopard DVD. Got a window which said "The disc you inserted was not readable by this computer". It also had 3 buttons to choose from: "Initialize", "Ignore" and "Eject". So I clicked on "Initialize" and Disc Utility opened on the First Aid page. I assume I'm supposed to erase the startup disc, but I thought maybe I should ask the experts here before I do that.
This machine has two 2TB HDDs that the previous owner has configured as a level 1 RAID. If I am to erase the startup disc do I erase both drives of the RAID set? If I'm not supposed to erase the startup drive, what do I need to do to get back to Snow Leopard? Thanks and thanks again!

The built-in checks will keep you from clobbering 10.8 Mountain Lion by Installing Snow Leopard over it (literally, 10.6 Snow Leopard Installer will see a later version in place, and knows it cannot install over a later version). So it says "Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer..." and leaves off "... "in its current state."
You will need to Install on a 10.6 Snow Leopard-erased drive. Mac OS X Erase function proceeds to install a Partition scheme and a default Volume after erasing, because a truly blank drive is useless for most Users.
When you boot to the Installer DVD, you are running off the DVD, so all Hard Drives are available to be erased if that is your choice. All data on them will be discarded. If you erase one drive in a mirrored RAID set, normally the other drive would survive and the set would be degraded. But a new version of RAID was introduced right AFTER 10.6, and it is likely that 10.6 cannot read that RAID at all under any circumstances.

  • I have an older Power Mac and it does not have the ability/hardware to connect to my wireless network. It is on 2nd floor which has no ethernet connections available. How can I get connected wirelessly?

I have an older Power Mac desktop computer. I do not believe it has the hardware to connect wirelessly to my wireless network. The computer is located on the 2nd floor of my house where there are no ethernet network connections so I would have to use wireless to connect to the internet. I have a wireless LinkSys router downstairs that I use to create my wireless network. I also have a Time Capsule upstairs but without the ability to plug an ethernet network cable into it, I cannot use it to get internet access t the computer.
What hardware can I add to give me the abiity to connect the Power Mac to my wireless network?
Is there a way perhaps to link routers? IE. Can I somehow have my existing wireless router downstairs connect wirelessly with the Time Capsule upstairs that i could then plug the Power Mac into for connectivity?
Not sure what version of OS this computer is currently using but do know it does not have the newer dual Intel processors. As such I am unable to update to newer OS versions.

While uselessSABOTAGE's advice is great, in case of future issues, it would helps us in the future if you would post accurate tech specs of your model iMac.
You info states you have an older IMac PowerMac, but is also says your OS X version is OS X 10.7.2.
This is not possible. OS X 10.7.2 Lion only runs on Intel CPU Macs.
Please, go up to the Apple symbol in the upper top left of OS X main menu bar. Click the symbol. Then click About this Mac. A popup window appears that gives some basic info. Then, click the More Info button and both post your iMacs complete specs by selecting/highlighting all of the info and copy paste this into a reply to this post, editing out your iMac's serial number. Then update the info you posted in your user profile with some of this new found data for future postings.

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

I have duel screens but I can't seem to find the appropriate video card. The serial number on my computer is: RM620603R6W. Apple won't help me because the computer is older than suggested. Please give me the exact video card that will work best for my computer.

Hi Mike, make sure the card has Mac ROM, or is a PC card with Mac ROMs flashed to it...

I can install mac osx leopard in the new Mac Mini.
My mac is the last versión of Mac Mini Server with OSX LION Server.
How I can install Mac Osx Leopard, the compatibilities with OSX LION are very bad with my programs.
this can be done in the new Mac Mini?

    Hola.
My mac mini is the version 5.3 of mid of the 2011.
Music hardware is working me a little better now, I think it has strengthened the stability and gives no error messages.
I afraid that I have become later unstable again .
    But now it works perfectly.
The new mac mini 5.x never can works with Leopard?
Also I am interesting for the version of Lion Golden Master, but I think that is for developers only?
You have a page of Golden Master in apple.com?
    Thanks
