Leopard or Tiger for 867GHz G4 Powerbook?

Hi. Hope this hasn't been covered already. Looked but couldn't find anything.
I am about to get Leopard to install on my MacBook. I am unsure whether it will also be worth installing it on my wife's G4 Powerbook which is right at the minimum system requirements - 867 GHz G4 processor and 640 MB RAM.
She really only uses it for the Web (Firefox), email and some office docs (we still use Office 2004).
Am I better leaving her machine running Tiger or would Leopard run at broadly the same speed for basic tasks like these?
Thanks for your thoughts.
Stuart

To do what you want requires either two retail Leopard install disks or the family pack. One version for each machine. Running Leopard on her machine should show an improvement. The best thing to do is put a bootable backup/clone of her existing installation onto an external FireWire HD, ensuring that it works exactly like the original, install Leopard onto the internal, and see how it performs. The bootable backup/clone allows you to revert back to the current state with minimal hassle. See these for details:

  • Clean install Leopard or Tiger for Final Cut 2 on my g5?

Hi, I currently have the previous final cut on my g5, on a Tiger operating system. I just got the new Final Cut 2, and I'm going to do a clean install of the OS to have everything running as smooth as possible. Will Leopard speed things up (or slow things down) for Final Cut 2, or should I just reinstall Tiger with Final Cut 2?
    Thanks

My biggest concern isn't rendering, it's overall playback performance in final cut pro.
Also, I'm curious as to how much slower motion 3 will be then motion 2 will be, and if motion 3 would run faster or the same in leopard and tiger. If I'm not mistaken I believe motion performance is quite dependent on the graphics card. I have an ATI 256 meg card that ran motion 2 acceptably in tiger, though I'm wondering how motion 3 in leopard will be in comparison (with the same video card and g5)
    Thanks

  • Upgrading to Leopard from Tiger on a G4 PowerBook

I tried to upgrade my PowerBook G4 from Tiger to Leopard, but the install disk said that installation wasn't possible. Apparently, however, it managed to install at least part of the OS on my hard drive, because it lists 10.5 as an option when I go to the Startup Disk option.
I'm also unable to reinstall Tiger on my hard drive, so I'm completely stuck. No OS will work for me.
    Any suggestions?

What did the error message say, and when did it appear?

  • Panther to Leopard or Tiger for G5 Imac

    Hello,
I am in the process of trying to back up my computer. I bought an external drive that has software that is compatible with OS X10.4.8+. I have panther which is X10.3.x and cannot use the software to back up my data. If I do not upgrade my operating system what is the best plan and how do I back up the data I have on my computer? I am considering upgrading to Tiger because it was the last operating system designed just for the G5 chip. Leopard scares me because I have not read anything about it that is positive with an older non Intel chip imac. Anyone have good experiences with Leopard and their G5 imac? Time machine on Leopard is interesting to me and would be the main reason to update but if the whole operating system does not work well with the G5 imac then I have not improved my computer.
    Mark

Use SuperDuper! to make an exact bootable clone of your system to your external firewire drive. That way, if anything goes wrong, and it shouldn't, you will have everything saved.
A hint, when you have installed Leopard, use the [10.5.6 combo updater|http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1056co mboupdate.html] to get yourself up-to-date.
Do post back and let us know how things went,

  • Is it possible to change 10.5.2 to 10.4 Leopard to Tiger for new computer?

For some reasons I need to start up my new MacBook Pro by OS 10.4 (Tiger).
The computer doesn't accept to install Tiger. Is it locked to Leopard and doesn't
work with any previous OS? I'd like to install it on my external hard disc but It's
not possible. Do you have any idea how to run the installer? (the installer is for
    intel based apple).

Is it locked to Leopard and doesn't work with any previous OS?
    Yes.
Do you have any idea how to run the installer?
You can't. If you use another machine to install it, it won't boot.

  • Buy Leopard vs Tiger for IMAC G 5 or simple give in and buy new IMac??

After reviewing this topic, I am still confused as to what to do. The Leopard OS looks complicated to load and I am not at all savy about Mac's and trouble shooting problems!! Is the Tiger a better way to go for a simple Mac user like me? I am even thinking about a new IMac with updated software and Leopard. My IMac works great but the Panther OS and ILife are probably getting outdated (but still meets all my needs still, though Turbo Tax will now not run on it.). Any suggestions or advice? Dazed and confused!

    Hi Stephen,
I agree with MGW that you seem to be looking for confirmation or approval that it would be a good idea to buy a new Mac. I have a feeling that if you install Leopard into your old Mac, it may run slower that on a stronger Mac which would have more RAM and power. Leopard would also take up more space from your current 80 HD. Furthermore, by purchasing a new iMac, you will be able to benefit from a SuperDrive instead of a ComboDrive, a bigger HD, and more RAM can't hurt.
Anyway, I'm cheering for you! Good luck with your decision! I never regretted my move from an old Quick Silver G4 tower (CD-R) to my current MacPro. It took me many years to get the courage and the money to finally go for it and NO REGRETS!
    Best wishes...
    Rio.

    ====================================
I have read about the new features in Leopard and would like to have them. At the same time I have read about dissatisfied user reviews about Leopard, mainly from non-Intel based Mac users. So I started this topic hoping to get an answer whether it is worthwhile for me to upgrade to Leopard as soon as possible, or wait til Apple releases more patches for Leopard to iron out the problems?

Sorry about the complexity, but my purpose for the work I did, and the way I did it was to safely upgrade a nicely running Tiger installation to Leopard, with minimum downtime incase things went badly.
The MBP internal drive that Apple uses is only 5400RPM and can't transfer data to boot the operating system or applications as fast as almost any drive in a PowerMac. Even with the ram maxed out, I was not getting all the performance from Tiger that a comparable PowerMac with the same CPU and video could get. Almost all modern PC's and Macs use 7200RPM (or faster) drives which can access and transfer data about 25% faster.
I decided to install Leopard to an external FW800 drive. I used an external drive because I didn't want damage my perfectly good running Tiger installation on the Laptop. I used FW800 because it is presently the fasted port on the Mac that supports booting. eSATA cards are available, but none of them guarantee booting.
I had already tested running applications from both drives by copying the WinXP hard drive file for Parallels and timing the launch from both drives. The external drive was at least 25% faster to boot Windows, and launch other large programs like Photoshop and GoLive.
So, I bought a 500GB newerTechnology miniStack V3 FW800/USB2/eSATA drive. This covers all the bases, Mac and PC, and will be useful for many purposes over the coming years. Who knows, Apple may support booting from eSATA on my next Mac and this drive can run even faster.
I installed Leopard to the new drive a couple of times. First, a clean install with none of my files transferred. This worked perfectly as far as all the hardware compatibility, and applications including TM worked perfectly.
Then I installed Leopard again and imported my applications and settings. This led to a couple of problems that were fixed with a couple of software updates and I fine tuned TM to a degree.
During the next 2 or 3 weeks, I only had to boot back to Tiger on the internal drive 3 times (out of the office).
Once I had a seemingly nice running installation of Leopard with all the updates and Time Machine tested as working well, I decided to clone my old Tiger installation onto an older slower USB 2 drive by using SuperDuper. I booted off of the clone to make sure it was good to go and then set that drive off to the side. It will get used for other projects in a few months, so no money wasted.
I installed Leopard onto the internal drive and imported my settings and files from the external drive. I made sure the system runs and the applications and files I need are available while out of the office.
What I ended up with, is a significantly faster Mac when working in the office with a second monitor helping the workflow, and a fresh, tested Leopard installation running Parallels and WinXP while on the road. When I bring the laptop back in from a field visit I boot from the internal drive and run TM if there has been many changes, then reboot back onto the external drive to do my normal work. I only leave the office with this MBP a day or so a week, and do almost all of my production work at the office on the faster drive.
Win/Win - if you need to spend money for an external drive, get the most out of it you can. In this case, I was also able to ensure that if my MBP is stolen, or hacked while in the field, my personal and financial records would not be on the Laptop.
    OK, fingers tired...

  • Need Tiger for iPhone, but will my G4 support Leopard?

I bought my g4 Powerbook in Spring '04. I need to update to at least Tiger for the iPhone, but given that Leopard will be out in a few weeks, I may just wait to get the new OS.
My real question is whether or not my computer will support Leopard. If not, there's no point in waiting. There seems to be little news regarding where Apple will make the cutoff for necessary compatability for old Macs wishing to upgrade.
    Any information is greatly appreciated.

    Hi there,
sorry for the late reply, but even though you said that all the G4's will be supported, does this mean that my G4 Digital Audio will run leopard? Granted that I haven't upgraded my processor yet. My ram is at 1.5GB. I also use my mac for everyday tasks and am not a video designer nor a gamer, therefore I don't need the expensive power overhaul of the Mac Pro machine.
Please let me know if Leopard will run on the Digital Audio G4.

  • Can I upgrade from osx tiger v10.4.11 to osx Snow Leopard v10.6 for 29$ ??

I was wondering if I could upgrade from osx tiger v10.4.11 to osx Snow Leopard v10.6 for 29$ or at a lower cost than full price. I do not need to upgrade that much because 10.4.11 is so great and I hate to leave it. Paying the full price of an operating system does not make sense to me. Can I do it cheaply because I am upgrading?

    No.
The $29 upgrade is from leopard to Snow Leopard.

I need to go back to Panther restore discs that came with my imac G5. There are too many important apps that just are not compatable with Leopard ie. Creative suite 2, Freehand MX. I can not print to high res PDF. Nothing happens and I do not have time to wait for all new programs to arrive. As a matter of fact I don't even think there is a leopard freehand verision. Will my restore CD's give me the option to erase and install. Yes I have several firewire drives with my system backed up.
I believe the proper way is to use your Leopard DVD to erase the HD. I would perform a full erase (include freespace), then boot, holding down the "C" key and install Panther. However, at this point you should seriously consider Tiger. I am presuming your PowerBook is a PPC (non-Intel) OS. The commercial Tiger CDs will install on your system. I upgraded my G5 from Panther, which it came with, to Tiger when it came out. Tiger is far superior to Panther.

  • Address Book Issues moving from Leopard to Tiger

I've carried out a clean install of a powerbook G4, moving down from leopard to tiger because the computer was struggling to cope with leopard with the lack of memory. I'm having problems importing the address book contacts. I've played around with the applications support files, cache files and preferences with no joy. Any ideas?

Thanks for the tip, but I don't have a AddressBook-v22.abcddb file in my application support/address book folder. What I currently have is as follows.
    ABPerson.skindexinverted
    AddressBook.data
    AddressBook.data.previous
And a folder I created called "Metadata" which has all of the contacts in .abcp format.
The top three files are recreated automatically it seems as I've deleted them a few times and after I open address book the files return.
    All thoughts welcome.

  • Migration from Leopard to Tiger

I wish to migrate all data, settings and application from my imac running Leopard to my powerbook running Tiger. The migration assistant doesn't seem to work: setting my imac to a firewire drive using 'T' at startup and running the assistant on my powerbook, although I can see the firewire drive in Finder on the power book, migration assistant cant see it. Is there something i'm doing wrong

I'm running Office '04 and have these in my own library preferences folder:
    com.microsoft.Word.plist
    com.microsoft.setupassistant.plist
    com.microsoft.OfficeNotifications.plist
    com.microsoft.Excel.plist
    com.microsoft.autoupdate.plist
Then there's a folder Microsoft User Data in my Documents folder.
That's the problem. MS tends to scatter files all over the place. I suggest you use EasyFind and/or Spotlight to search for Microsoft on your computer.
Many of your settings will be in plist files in your user preferences folder. My main worry would be if there was something specifically structured for Leopard, your Tiger account might choke on it. I'd at least make an extra administrator account on your computer so you could repair things from there if you introduce a file seen as corrupted by Tiger. Of course make a backup of your computer too.

  • Leopard to Tiger iChat Video Fix! (maybe?)

I posted this in another thread, but thought I'd open this up in an attempt to help the seemingly many, many others who are having this similar issue. Ever since installing Leopard, I've been unable to video chat--either Leopard-to-Leopard or Leopard-to-Tiger. Recently, I went through numerous steps and was able to get Leopard-to-Leopard to work, but Tiger still wasn't working. I worked with Ralph Johns and we tried numerous things, but nothing seemed to work UNTIL I turned off the firewall on my machine. I'd done this before, but that was before I tweaked all of these other settings as well. Now, everything seems to be working. I've tested with buddies on different ISP's and with Apple's test bots.
These are some of the key things I've done:
    Set QT STreaming to 1.5
Set bandwidth (in iChat) to 500kbps (Comcast)
Deleted iChat prefs and ichatagent prefs
Set parallels network connections to "off" in System Prefs>Network
    Reset PRAM
Reset security port to 443 (in iChat prefs, server settings)
    Turned off firewall on machine
    Restart iChat (obviously)
As I mentioned elsewhere, I don't know which key thing made a difference, or what combination of things worked. I'm not excited about having my firewall off, but I'll leave it on unless I'm trying to video chat with someone on Tiger, then turn it off temporarily. I did not have to make any adjustments to my router (though I did try this), trigger ports, or anything like that.
I found testing with the apple buddy test bots was very helpful. Add these accounts to your buddy list as AIM buddies: appleu3test01, appleu3test02, appleu3test03. 01 and 03 are running Leopard, and 02 is running Tiger.
Obviously, some of these steps may not be necessary (if you don't have parallels installed, for instance). I don't know that this is THE fix, but it's what worked for me. Leopard's firewall has pretty much been a disaster, so I'm not surprised this was the issue for connecting to Tiger machines.
    I hope it helps!

Following up on my own post: This is only a partial fix. I can now reliably iChat (or break iChat) with one Tiger machine, but I cannot iChat with my parents' Tiger machine.
I have 3 computers that I arranged for testing:
    1. G4 1.6 GHz Leopard PowerBook
    2. G4 1.6 GHz Tiger MacBook
    3. Intel 2.4 GHz Leopard MacBook
    4. G4 500 MHz Tiger Cube
The two Tiger machines always connect to my parents iMac. iChat works flawlessly, as it did on my Intel machine before I upgraded to Leopard.
The two Leopard machines chat just fine with each other on my LAN, but neither can connect to my parents' iMac.
The two Leopard machines can chat just fine with either Tiger machine on my LAN, but with the Intel machine, only if Parallels networking is turned off.
If anyone has any specific tests to suggest, I'd appreciate it.

  • Spotlight reindexing drives when booting from Leopard to Tiger & vice versa

    Hi,
I have two HDs, one with Leopard and the other with Tiger. Whenever I boot into the other HD I find that Spotlight re-indexes my two 750GB music & data drives which takes some time. Why is this? Do they use different versions of the index?
It's a bit of a pain as I have to boot into both OS's every day and cannot use Spotlight while the indexing is running and it also slows the system down. I do not want to turn indexing off as I need it during my work.
    Any help/ideas?

I don't think there is any way around this. may I ask why you have to use both tiger and leopard?
you can try using some spotlight alternatives such as [EasyFind|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/11706] when you are using one of the two OS ( either tiger or leopard) and spotlight for the other os.
