Leopard OS and a now inoperable LaCie external hard drive
The issue is a Leopard upgrade and data storage filled LaCie 160 GB, fire wire 800 external hard drive problem.
I’ve upgraded my two computers, a MacBook Pro (Duo), 180 GB, laptop and desktop G5 iMac, 60 GB, with the new Leopard OS 10.5.
With the older Tiger OS, I placed upon my external hard drive special company materials with some backup items. (I put these special items on the LaCie for protection in case of installation problems with Leopard; I also needed more space on the G5.)
With Tiger, I could always read the LaCie on either Mac units. Drat it, I can no longer read my LaCie with Leopard and I’m in a pickle. When I plug in, via Fire Wire 800 (the only means to connect from this LaCie), I get this message with the red stop sign: “Disk Insertion: The disk you inserted was not readable by this [either] computer.” So, you good readers, what is your counsel, please?
I have to join here.....my experience with a lacie as time machine connected to the fw port is ok...no problem, BUT when/if I connect anything to the fw400 or the front fw800 port on a MacPro....that's when the fun begins. I installed a pci-e fw expansion card and even with that whatever is connected via fw isn't dependable. Sometimes out of nowhere, the drives will disconnect (not unmount) on their own. I don't know if this is a lacie issue, a leopard issue or a macpro issue. Similarly, I have mybook premium that will work via the front fw if the lacie is connected to the rear fw port....to me it's all a mystery how computers work anyway so I don't put anything on these drives that's essential not to lose. i found tiger to work better with these externals but that was also 10.4.11.....

Tried your suggestion various ways but it had no effect the download button was still greyed out and the install button would not activate will keep trying to find a solution. I dont want to boot from the external hard drive that has Lion on mainly because it is a usb HD and the connection to my wireless modem slows the connection rate and downloading would take about ten hours -

thankyou in advance, I updated to 10.4.6 but now the ipod and lacie external hard drive (usb drive) are not recognized by the computer. have tried disk utility, restarting etc but no difference. The lacie is recognized by another computer so it is not faulty. Any suggestions please?after reading this and resetting the PMU, my drive works. I'd say try it, the worst that could happen is you have to fix your time and date.

I connected my external hard drive to my new imac to put all of the information from my macbook onto it. I have been working on the macbook now and want to reconnect the external hard drive so my imac is updated with the work. How is that done? or is it possible?
As I said, I don't use Time Machine, so it'd be best to wait for an "expert" answer, but, with my very limited knowledge, I'd say: probably not - so, for now, I'd suggest you read up on Time Machine:

My computer is still slow after uninstalling Macbook pro and buying a LaCie external hard drive and saving everything to it. I repaired disk permissions. Am I supposed to erase original hard drive?
Thanks!Not yet, get a second hard drive, or a second medium to backup your data. You never want there to be less than two copies of your data at anytime. If for some reason one fails, you'll always want a backup. Clone with Superduper or Carbon Copy Cloner. Note, if you have an early 2008 Mac, it is not PPC, but rather Intel. PPC indicates the chip is G3, G4, or G5. You can double check this by going to Apple menu and selecting About This Mac. Once you verified your Mac, I can ask a moderator to move this thread, so you don't have to crosspost.

When I plug a LaCie external hard drive to work with Time Machine into my new Mac mini, [OS 10.9.1] it drastically effects the performance of the internet and email, turn off Time Machine, unplug the hard drive, internet and email go back to normal. Why?

I had a windows laptop, and I save files like photos,documents, videos and other things on an external hard drive, and now I want tomove those files to the Mac book Pro, and then move those files again toanother external hard drive 1T. Connect the external drive to your Mac and drag the files from it to your Mac's internal drive. Then dismount and disconnect the external drive, connect the 1TB external drive, and drag the files from the internal drive onto the external. Nothing will have been deleted from any of the drives up to this point; the files will only have been copied. Verify that the files are readable. There's no reason they shouldn't be; this is just a precaution.
Now if you wish to delete the files from any of the drives, drag them to the Trash, and Empty the Trash while the drive from which they came is still connected. If you disconnect the drive before emptying the Trash, the files you were trying to remove from it won't be deleted. They'll remain in the Trash and continue to take up space on the drive.
Note that if your external drives are in NTFS format, you won't be able to write anything to them or delete anything from them, though you will be able to read and copy the files they contain. The NTFS disk format is read-only to the Mac OS, unless you have a third-party NTFS driver installed. To make your drives cross-platform readable and writable, you must reformat them in the FAT32 or ExFAT format. -
I moved my FCP events and projects folder onto my external hard drive and now everything is gone on FCP. When I tried to reload those folders onto FCP nothing happened. I still get the missing files image. When I try to import the folders manually something pops up that says it is incompatable. It is possible to retrieve everything that was lost?

You may need to prepare yourself for a "World of Hurt" from your wife...
Since the average 0.9 megapixel JPEG photo file of normal graphic complexity stored at a high quality compression setting is 125-135 KBs in size, I would have to assume any QT video files you created of more than a fraction of a second in duration were most likely saved as "reference" files to only be 50-150 KBs. Basically, a reference file is q QT (MOV) file that tells a video player how to play data that is still stored in its original source file container(s). For instance, you could trim and merge a number of files together and save the result as a "reference" file that takes up very little room on your hard drive. Or, you could post fles to a server and create a "reference" file that is small enough to be sent as an email attachment that plays the uploaded data on someone else's computer as long as they are connected to the Internet. Unfortunately, for these reference files to work, all of the resources referenced within the file must continue to exist in their proper locations in order to be found and played by the reference. Since you did not indicate what "but they won't play" really means here or how you actually "moved" your iPhoto library files to the external drive, I can only make some "educated guesses" at this point. (BTW: for future reference, iPhoto has a built-in function that allows you to copy your library to one or more back-up locations and then connect to them by default when iPhoto opens or switch source libraries at will within the opened application.)
If you created reference files and saved them to an external drive, you should be getting an error message telling you the app needs to know where the source files are located so the reference file can re-connect to the resource data. If the original files were also saved, then simple navigate to the source files in oder to tell the app where they are now located. If the source files were deleted as part of the reformatting process, then you are up the proverbial creek whithout a paddle with little or no hope of doing anything about this issue. (I.e., reformatting and then re-installing a system drive usually means you would have little hope of recovering the specific "lost" data you want as there is always a good chance that some of the data segments were overwritten during the process.) -
My La Cie external hard drive drops it's connection after mounting on my iMac computer. This problem seems to have started after upgrading to OSX10.6.7. When I turn on my computer and than turn on the external hard drive the hard drive mounts to my disk top without any problem, but when I bring up Mail or Safari the hard drive drops its connection. Is there a fix for this problem? Hope someone can help.
The connection to 10.6.7 may just be a coincidence. I had a similar problem with a disk and was about to throw it out but decided to try a different USB cable. That fixed the problem and the drive is still in use.
Try a new cable if you have not already done so.

My Lacie external hard drive has a life of its own

I've had my Lacie External hard drive for about 4 months and i have a recurring problem, it wont always show up in finder or on the desktop.
It shows up in disk utilities just fine, but stupidly the first time this happened i didn't know that you could right click and "open" it from disk utils, so i panicked and reformatted the hard disk, obviously losing everything inside.
Since then i have learnt from my mistakes and now when it vanishes (when i start up the computer it just randomly doesn't appear...) i just open via disk utils. But this isn't fair! It should appear EVERY time its switched on and plugged in. Thats what i paid for.
I issued a ticket with Lacie but with lots of trial and error they were able to tell me that is was more likely my imac and not the external hard drive. I am crossing my fingers hoping for help here!

LACIE external hard drive will not mount
I had this problem with Tiger too. I have to turn the LaCie external hard drive on and off 4 or 5 times before it appears on my desktop. This shouldn't be right! Can I do something about this???
Another Lacie issue (lacie 250 d2) . Similar the others. WHen I installed leopard it asked if this was the drive to use etc and i said yes. Since then it wont work. All attempts to back up have failed. I cant reformat either. Just get beachball when ever I try anything with the disk. Only way to do anything is to remove the FW connection. Tried the drive on another G4 (tiger) and it scanned and reported "disk seems ok" but then any attempt to write to the drive or any other activity is greeted with beachball.'
Rang the distributor and was told " we are having some issues with lacie and we are losing confidence ... would you like to buy a western digital" !!! -

USB 2.0The only advantage is to free up a port on the compute.
In your case the two drives only have Firewire 800 and eSATA in common. You don't have an eSATA port on your iMac so you could only daisy-chain via Firewire. If you did that then the drive that supports USB3 would run at a slower speed. The way you have it set up now one of them is able to operate at the very fast USB 3.0 speed. On the other hand if neither of these drives needs to run particularly fast then if you daisy-chain them via Firewire 800 that would free up the USB 3.0 port should you need it. -
Problems with LaCie external hard drive.
I bought a LaCie external hard drive about a month before leopard was released. I bought this with the intention of using it with time machine. This hard drive has USB and ethernet connections. When I updated to leopard I found out that the USB connection does not work with leopard, I contacted LaCie and they told me that I can only use ethernet with leopard. but time machine won't let me use it through ethernet.
Please respond with any way that I can use time machine with this hard drive.
If it helps it is the LaCie ethernet disk mini 500 GB model.I have 5 Lacie's and they work with USB. 70% of the people out there will get the cheapest drives they can, and that will be a USB drive.
Here is how to format your drive.
Macintoch HD->Applications->Utilities->Disk Utilities.
Have your Lacie plugged in and running then on the left side highlight it. You may have 2 listings for THAT drive here. The top entry will give you the for example "468 GB WD3435988345903" that is the one you want to highlight. The second or third or fourth on would be the name of the drive partitions you would name. or sub hard drives inside your main Lacie hard drive.
Here is my suggestion, You still need another form of backup if TM goes bad on you. I clone my HD on another partition on the same drive as my TM. I have 70 GB partition for the clone or backup. So I will give you this scenario.
Highlight your drive then click on "partition" in the headers to your right.
In Volume scheme hit 2 partitions
Then go down and click "options"
Hit "GUID Partition"
Your partitions will be named untitled 1 and 2
Highlight the "untitled 2" by clicking in it's square
There will be a small center dot between the two partitions, put your cursor on that dot while clicking and pull down the box to 50- 60 GB or what ever you feel your max HD space will be with all your pictures and movies I chose 70GB
Them you untitled 1 will be your TM partition
Go a head and name your partitions in the line to your right by clicking on the partition squares.
I put in Time Machine for #1 and Tom's Clone 12-29-07 and I change the date every time I clone or backup on this partition by clicking on the lower most part of the name of this partitions name on your desktop. You will get a blue highlight when you can add to it. The name/date change can be done on your desktop anytime.
Before you hit the final button to do this partition scheme, double check options on more tie that you have the GUID scheme checked.
Run this free program to use to clone your main drive in your new #2 partition as an added backup to TM.
