Leopard & Parallels co-habitation?

Hi:
I'm finally planning to get Leopard soon, like as soon as I get back from vacation next week. It will be installed on my macbook.
I'm currently running 10.4.11 & have version 3 of Parallels, build 5608 (jun 08).
I've heard that early on there were issues of Leopard & Parallels not 'playing well' together. Right now I'm VERY happy with how Parallels & Tiger are doing. Are there any outstanding issues I should know about or need to be concerned about when I upgrade from Tiger to Leopard? Note: I don't want to lose Parallels, I love being able to fire up a Win XP window while doing my mac stuff.
Thanks!

WinClone - http://www.twocanoes.com for cloning Windows
Some people did have trouble upgrade from Tiger to Leopard. Some lost Windows XP partition. Me, I always clone my system, and reformat my drives with a new OS and plan for the worst and start fresh. Then things tend to work as they should.

  • Tip for upgrading from MBP to iMac with Leopard & Parallels Boot Camp

Here are some pointers based on my recent experience upgrading from a MacBook Pro to an iMac, under Leopard and with Parallels using a Boot Camp partition for Windows.
First, you do not need to create a Windows partition on your new computer. You will use Boot Camp Assistant to do that - it can dynamically resize your existing Mac OS X partition without destroying it. (I initially used Disk Utility to create a Windows partition but it wasn't recognised properly by Parallels and also the Mac wouldn't boot from it).
A great way to simplify getting your old installation across is to make a Time Machine backup onto an external drive. Yes, you could also use start up your old Mac in Target mode (hold down T key when you start it), then start the new Mac and copy your settings over. But in my case, the new iMac (a refurb) came with Tiger installed on it while my old Mac had already been upgraded to Leopard.
I started the new Mac using a Leopard install CD (holding down the C key while starting). Then I chose to restore from a Time Machine backup instead of installing from CD, and soon had a functioning Leopard installation on the new Mac. Well, almost.
Next I used Boot Camp Assistant to create a Windows partition on the new drive. The old Mac's partition was only 10 GB in size, but I made the new one 31.9 GB in size (so I could stay under the Windows limit of 32 GB for FAT partitions). I then quit without installing Windows.
On the old Mac, I used an external drive formatted as FAT and used Disk Utility to 'restore' my Windows partition to the external drive. Next I plugged that drive into the new Mac, and restored the external Windows partition to the new Mac's Windows partition. So far, so good. However, Parallels would not start this installation of Windows, and the new Mac would not boot into it (holding down the Option key at start-up did not show me a Windows drive).
I tried doing a repair of the Windows installation using a Windows install disk but that did not work. What did work was the following: I booted from the Window install CD, then started a new installation. I asked Windows to format the Windows partition on the new Mac, then powered off the new Mac as soon as Windows started copying files. Next, I rebooted the new Mac into Mac OS X, started Disk Utility, and again did a restore of the Windows partition on the external drive to the Windows partition on the new Mac.
The final step was to reboot the new Mac into Windows directly so that I could load drivers from the Leopard install CD. [I haven't done that yet, so I'm not sure it's necessary].
    Hope this helps!

Sounds solid to me. If the Glyph was connected on a firewire port that is. This would free up the bandwith that way but actually it is hardly an issue with the Duet considering the limited inputs. But using the Glyph as a backup for your projects is good wise idea anyway.

  • Leopard & Parallels - migration

I am considering migrating from Parallels to Leopard Bootcamp. I do not want to lose any of the files I have created and the email from the XP-Pro/SP2 instance I have running on Parallels build 5140. Before I upgrade to Leopard I want to make sure where I am heading with this decision. I could upgrade the Parallels to the new build 55xx that goes with leopard but then how do I capture and move the files and email in tact over to Boot camp and also the XP OS as well? Looking for ideas and guidance here.
    Michael

You should probably post your question in the Parallels and/or Boot Camp forums rather than a forum dealing with the usage of OS X.

  • Keyboard Function Keys - Leopard / Parallels / Boot Camp

Hi. I'm two weeks into my first Mac experience, and am delighted with the difference Leopard makes to my workflow! Apologies if my
One slight problem - a few days ago, my MBP (2.4 Ghz Dual Core) function keys in Leopard stopped responding as I would have expected. The only Mac functionality that still works is the Dashboard / Expose keys - everything else (screen / keyboard brightness, volume, eject) does not work at all. Weirdly, everything works as expected in my XP Boot Camp installation, just not in Leopard (or in Parallels, loading the Boot Camp installation as an image).
    What I've tried:
System Preferences : toggled use Fn key flag. With the function key held down, I get the enhanced Expose functions to work without problem. Interestingly, Keyboard & Mouse shows no keyboard backlight settings, which I'm certain was there a few days ago. However, the toolbar app I downloaded to manually operate the keyboard backlight works well, so the backlight is both there and capable of being triggered.
    PRAM reset - no difference.
Reset by removing the power lead & battery, and holding down the power button for 5 seconds - no difference.
Verifying & repairing permissions & verifying the HDD, from Disk Utility - no difference.
    Safe Boot - no difference.
Logging on as another user - no difference (that is, the keys still do not work as expected).
Parallels - toggled Fn-key requirement for function keys - no difference.
Since the hardware is clearly fine (as evidenced by the keys working in XP), and logging on as another user makes no difference, I'm wondering if there's a global preferences file issue here. Before I start moving likely-looking preferences files from the Library and rebooting, is there anything else I should try? Main applications are Logic Studio, Adobe CS3, Microsoft Office 2008 & NI Komplete. All available automatically identified updates applied, and OSX is 10.5.2.
This issue is now beginning to aggrieve me, and I'm hoping that someone will be kind enough to help me sort it out. I have Time Machine backups, but I see that a lack of free space on my backup drive has resulted in the deletion of backups from the time I know everything was working, and in any case I've spent a lot of time installing and configuring software over the last few days and would really prefer not to have to start all over again.
    TIA,
    Darren

I spoke to Apple Care, who suggested I try everything I'd already tried, which was reassuring. Their next suggestion was an Erase & Reinstall, but since I had full Time Machine backups in hand, I thought I'd have nothing to lose by performing an Archive & Reinstall, which worked! Issue resolved, and Function keys now working perfectly in Windows and Leopard.

  • Leopard, Parallels and Games

Anybody here running any games by using Parallels? Like COD4? I am so sick and tired of having to reboot into Bootcamp to play games. I wish Mac and game companies could just get along and release the same games on Mac that are on PC....ARGH!!!

    Hi,
since Parallels and Fusion have only support for DirectX 8 and experimental support for DX9 at the moment, you don't have another possibility than using BootCamp.
Maybe we see improved gaming capabilities with Parallels and Fusion in the (not so far) future.

  • Snow Leopard, Parallels and the Day After!

Yesterday I installed Parallels 6 and spent several happy hours enjoying the benefits of that advanced and visually stunning operating system . . . . . Windows 7.
Everything seemed to work perfectly until I switched my iMac on this morning, when I immediately noticed 2 things.
    1. My startup chime nearly deafened me!  For the past couple of years I have had an app called "Startup Sound" residing in my System Preferences, whose job is to reduce the sound to a very low and pleasing level.
On checking in SP I found that the volume settings had not altered . . . . . . I thought they may have returned to the normal maximum setting.
Anyone know whether Parallels knocks out "Startup Sound"?
    2. The actual startup process took twice as long as normal. This could be coincidence as occasionally this does happen. I suppose only time will tell, but it occurred to me that having 2 operating systems residing on one HD might account for the increased startup time.

    Thanks for the reply Ross.
I decided not to wait until tomorrow, so I shut down and relaunched my iMac a couple of times.
The startup sound was once again suitably low and the startup time was much quicker, though still a little longer than the fastest I get of under a minute (I have a lot of "Login Items").
So it looks as though it was a one-off coincidence.

  • Lion - I have to say I should have stayed with Snow Leopard

I am not a huge of Lion at all.  In Snow Leopard and using Parallels I could print, email and work flawlessly.  But I made the stupid decision to upgrade to Lion and now I cannot for the life of me print From Parallels at all now.  THIS *****!!!  In a company where printing large sheets in a MUST - it dissappoints me that I cannot use my machine as I need it to be used.  I think Apple needs to reconsider their operatig system....
    I miss Snow Leopard...
    Angela
PS That is Lion, Parallels 7, Windows 7 and HP Designjet 500 42-inch.  I can print just fine from Mac but not Parallels (this set up worked great on Snow Leopard/Parallels 7)

I have not had any problems setting up any printer, so far, from Lion with Vmware Fusion and Win XP. Or from Win 7 on PC. And I use a Designjet 500 also
You are not doing something right. If you upgraded to Lion over Snow Leopard you may have to Re-install Parallels, latest version, Load your Win 7 Virtual Machine (in Fusion I can save the complete Win OS anywhere on my system or network and then copy it back and run it) and then re-Install the print drivers for your printer.

  • Newest 15-inch MacBook Pro, Parallels 5, and Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

With the newest 15-inch MacBook Pro's on the market and with Parallels 5, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit should work, correct?

Yes and with Parallels 5 you get full Windows 7 support (Parallels 4 Win7 support wasn't so good) and 5 now runs in 64-bit mode on Snow Leopard (Parallels 4 only ran in 32-bit mode) so you can use more than 4GB RAM

  • MacBook Pro, Parallels, Quickbooks and Printing

Neither laptop or iMac now recognize my wireless printer, although they were working at first.  The wireless printer is on, and can print its own diagnostic report that says it is connected to the WiFi (the same one both Macs are connected to).  Originally I was able to print off either Mac, and also from Quickbooks.  Help Please!  I have a new Dual Band router (Netgear) and both computers and the printer are on the same band.
New MacBook Pro, older iMac, operating system up to date printer is HP Photosmart Premium 310.

  • Another error -8, different from others

I am the Desktop Support person for a faculty member at a large University. She has been using iChat for over a year now to communicate and collaborate with a colleague at another University. About two weeks ago she started getting the error -8 issue when she tried to video chat with her colleague. Video chat had always worked flawlessly up to that point. She can still text chat with this person and she can video chat with other people on campus. Other computers on campus can video chat with her off-campus colleague as well. I have checked her QT Streaming settings, Bandwidth settings in iChat and made sure she is not connected to wireless and wired at the same time, and still it doesn't work. I do not have access to any of the network gear involved as that's a different part of IT but I believe everything is configured correctly as other iChat users (including myself) can video chat with people off-campus including the person she is having problems with. I really think it has to be something on her computer. Both users are running iChat 3.1.9 and OS X 10.4.11. I have included the error report below. Any suggestions from the gurus? Thanks!

Ok one or two last thoughts.
    1) Shut down the computer and disconnect from the router (Shut down the Airport card before hand if Wireless).
    Restart the computer
    Restart iChat
    Reconnect to the router.
    Login to AIM.
Don't ask me why this works for iChat 2 and 3 but it does.
It maybe something somewhere things it has a chat still connected.
1a) Related to that is running the Cron Scripts
I am sure you are familiar with this but I will post the link for others
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607640&#607640
    2) Is a bit more extreme but somewhat related to the idea of maintenance and repair and that is to run the combo version of the OS level this computer is at
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/ Make sure with 10.4.11 updates that this is the right computer type as there are two in the List (One Intel, One PPC)
    3) IS there any chance that iChat thinks this computer is sitting in two networks ?
iChat 4 reports this as Error 4 but iChat 3 and before seem to report error 8 leading you to look elsewhere.
In iChat 4/Leopard it can be caused by Parallels sharing the Mac IP (this seems to be a Leopard/Parallels issue)
But it is caused by the use of two VPNs that this app sets up.
Wired and wireless connections at the same time will do it as will two DHCP servers on the LAN or in Leopard, Sharing the Internet Connection also gets an Error 4
At this sort of stage with a domestic set up I would be suggesting 1) through 2) to do to basically reset the the System and know where we were starting from.
Item 3) is info gained from increased info in iChat 4 that may be related.

  • Need help installing on new iMac

I am just in the process of getting ready to upgrade my G5 to Leopard, and then back up the drive to a firewire drive. I am also getting a new iMac, which will come with Leopard, Parallels, and Windows, pre-installed. I do not want to have to start putting my software on the new computer disc by disc. How do I transfer what I have on the firewire drive to the new computer? If I copy the drive over, will I lose what is pre-installed on the iMac? I can't copy the G5 drive to the firewire to begin with, and I can't copy it over from there to the iMac using SuperDuper, since I understand it does not work with Leopard, so what do I use? Can someone give this moron step by step instructions? I have had a number of computers over the years, but never copied over a drive - Inever had as much on a computer as I have put on it over the last few years, and I don't want to spend weeks transferring. Thanks for any advice! Leslie

    Hi Leslie Weinberg;
If I understand you correctly you want to move your applications from a G5 to new iMac. This is know way to cause performance problems on the new iMac. The reason for this is that applications installed on the G5 are set up for PowerPC and the new iMac has an Intel processor.
The recommended way to do this is to install the application on the new iMac and then you can move the data and settings over afterwards.

  • What is the difference between OSX 10.6 and 10.6 server? I need to install Snow Leopard in a Parallels VM and it only allows 10.6 server. Will Rosetta work if I use the server edition?

I MUST use an app that was discontinued which requires Rosetta, yet I also want to upgrade to Mavericks. I was told that Parallels and VMWare Fusion both support running Snow Leopard SERVER, but not Snow Leopard. Two questions: Will Rosetta run on Snow Leopard Server when it is running inside the Parallels/Fusion/whatever virtual machine which is running under Mavericks? The second question is: Is there any problem with running any specific software in Snow Leopard Server when it is set up this way?

    Richard Cartledge wrote:
The problem with client as virtualised OS is the Apple EULA, not a technical one.
I don't know if it works, or you're just not meant to do it.
PS. If you download or have Snow Leopard DVD, you can install Rosetta in later OSs, certainly Lion and Mountain Lion and Mavericks.
insert your Snow Leopard disc, open the Optional Installs folder on that disc, and double-click the Optional Installs.mpkg package. The Installer will open and you’ll be prompted to click Continue a couple of times and then choose a destination for the installation. Choose your startup volume and click Continue yet again.
In the Custom Install on “nameofvolume” window that appears, enable the Rosetta option and click Continue. In the next window click Install to do just that.
NB/ I don't have any old software to test to see if it actually makes it work!
    WRONG TWICE!
Bad idea to attempt to install Rosetta into Lion, Mt. Lion or Mavericks and good luck trying to remove it after that attempt.  Result: NO powerpc app will run after that installation and you will have to complete a wipe of your hard drive and a complete pre-Rosetta install to get rid of Rosetta!
It was a common Urban Myth that the Snow Leopard EULA prohibited its virtualization in Lion or Mt. Lion on a Mac.  That myth has been largely debunked over the last two years.
In addition, Apple's release of Snow Leopard Server at a 95% discount ($20) has rendered the issue largely moot!
OP: what application are we talking about here?
For example here is the long beloved powerpc application Appleworks running in Snow Leopard Server installed in Parallels for use in a post Lion world:

  • Superdrive not working on MacBook Pro when using Parallels in Leopard

Just wanted to mention this. I don't know if it's been reported before but I just recently discovered this when attempting to use my drive to read some DVDs. I installed Leopard a couple of weeks ago and haven't used the drive since, so yesterday when I couldn't read any discs I got worried that the drive might be malfunctioning. By accident I closed Parallells in the dock and a while later when giving the drive a last try I was surprised to see that it was fully working again
Just a tip so you don't unnecessarily go and turn in your MacBook (and have to wait like 3-4 weeks before getting it back...).
There are certainly a lot of bugs in Leopard...

When you configured your Parallels host OS you told it to grab the CD drive. Once it has done that it is no longer available to OS X. Go to the lower right corner of the Parallels window and find the CD drive icon. You can release the drive back to OS X there.

  • Unable to access the internet on windows xp using bootcamp. I installed the bootcamp drivers ( from snow leopard) but it still doesn't work. I have parallels 6 also installed and IT works fine. I am missing a rtl network adapter-thanksr

    Hi
I have a new 21 inch imac oct 2011 version. I installed bootcamp and windows xp on my machine and i also installed parallels 6.
Paralleles works great and i can open any program with it. But bootcamp also works EXCEPT it refuses to give me access to the internet. I installed the bootcamp drivers from my snow leopard disk, it did not make a difference. All the drivers installed but still no internet. I then installed the bootcamp drivers from the gray mac osx disk (#1) but it stopped installing with an error number ( 2753) and it said that the package was damaged.
I have tried everything; i opened each disk and trieed installing the files separately. Nothing.
What i see missing in my devices screen in XP is the network adapter.
I have a router (dlink-dr615) and it is connected by ethernet to my imac. I wonder if THIS might have anything to do with the problem. Any guidance would be much appreciated.
    Thank you

I'd recommend reposting in the Boot Camp forum, that is where the Boot Camp and Windows gurus hang out.
    Good luck.

  • Win 7 Pro (via Parallels 6), Snow Leopard, and a USB thumb drive

This is probably a simple fix...
When I plug in a thumb drive, Snow Leopard recognizes it.  When I tell Parallels to "share" the same thumb drive, Win 7 Pro installs the driver and it recognizes the thumb drive under "Devices."  But Win 7 Pro does not "see" the thumb drive under "My Computer."
Is this an issue with Win 7 Pro not recognizing the thumb drive since the drive was formatted under Snow Leopard?

Check to see what format your thumb drive was formatted as...most of the time the format is MS-DOS (FAT32) when purchasing the majority of thumb drive storage...I want to assume at some point you reformatted your thumb drive as Mac OS Extended.
    1. Mount thumb drive onto your mac...hilight your thumb drive and choose COMMAND-I.
    2. Check the Format field: (type of format).
If your thumb drive ends up being Mac OS Extended...backup all your files onto your desktop, lauch Disk Utility, Choose your thumb drive and format as MS-DOS (FAT). Copy files back to your thumb drive.
You now have yourself a dual format thumb drive that should mount without issue on any mixed Mac/PC/Parallels enviroment.
