Leopard Performance vs. Tiger perf.

Hi - I'm running 7.2 on a G5 quad core, currently with tiger. Does anyone have any info about any possible perf. improvement in stability and speed, when running 7.2 in the latest version of Leopard??
I know some folks running L8 on Leo, saw performance improvements in the later 10.5 releases...
thanks,

To be clear, if you're on 7.2.3, & 10.4.11, & are considering upgrading to 10.5.6, you shouldn't have any problems & might even notice some slight improvements.
Having said that, there's always someone who has problems with an upgrade; but generally speaking, I don't think you'll find changes to performance an issue. I think that's what you wanted to know…

Hi, I want to downgrade from OSX LEOPARD to OSX TIGER but I have a few questions regarding this. My iMac is originally from Sep 2007 it came preloaded with tiger. I have original install (2) tiger discs version 10.4.10.  I want to know if it is safe and what are the necessary steps to do so. Also by downgrading im wondering if a lot of apps nowadays support tiger for example I have photoshop version 5 and 4 these are very important to me. One last question does anyone know of any reliable virus protection for mac that doesnt slow down your computer? because I have read that a lot of them do so. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it! Here are the specs for my iMac

Most of the time a perception of general slow performance is the result of installing third party junk alleged to speed up, "clean" or "optimize" your Mac, or to look for viruses that don't exist. Ideally you would know what you installed so you can uninstall it, but if you don't know or aren't sure there are techniques such as Safe Mode and creating a temporary user account to confirm that suspicion.
If you open Activity Monitor it may show a process, or processes, that occupy a lot of your system's time.
Slowness confined solely to web browser activity is often the result of an inexorable progress toward websites that demand ever more processor-intensive tasks. If your slow performance is strictly limited to web browsing, you might try disabling Flash by either uninstalling it, or use utilities such as ClickToFlash that allow you to control what Flash content gets loaded. Flash in itself is not inherently evil, but there is nothing to stop websites or the advertisers who pay for them from writing horrible Flash code that can do everything from hogging 100% of your CPU's time to causing random crashes. You can watch Activity Monitor as in the above to correlate these troublesome web pages with performance degradation.
You are correct; if your computer shipped with Tiger you may certainly revert to it. I forgot that Tiger was shipping on new Macs as recently as five years ago. To downgrade it would be necessary to completely erase your hard disk and boot with the Tiger installation DVD, followed by installing it anew. Such drastic measures are not necessary and you are unlikely to be satisfied with the results anyway.
Assuming your system is free of third party parasitic junk attached to OS X in an ill-conceived attempt to improve upon it, that your hard disk drive is sound and the boot volume has enough free space to work with, by far the best performance-enhancing improvement would be to add more memory. Buy as much as your computer can use and that you can afford. 2 GB is not that much any more.

  • Can A Boot Camp Partition Made With Leopard Live With Tiger?

If I downgrade from Leopard back to Tiger, will my Boot Camp XP partition still be bootable and recognizable?

The short answer is YES. I say that because now all driver updates are offered by apple on the WINDOWS SIDE via Apple Software Update so you shouldn't need Leopard for that. This means that downgrading to Tiger should not affect the Windows partition and its contents.
Be sure to back up everything before downgrading.

  • Change Leopard to display Tiger's dock.

    Dear members:
This is probably a minor issue for most but I have found the new dock on Leopard to be quite annoying. I really prefer to work with the dock in Tiger.
Although I have already upgrade the office computers to Leopard my home computer is still running Tiger. Due to need to install a few applications that are only available for Leopard (not for Tiger) I will have to upgrade my home computer also.
Is there a way (either using Leopard features or third party applications) to change the dock so that it looks the same way it does in Tiger ?
Thank you in advance for your help and responses.
    Joseph Chamberlain

you can easily modify the look of the dock in leopard but it won't look exactly like it did in Tiger. see this link for lots of custom docks instructions on how to apply them
    http://www.leoparddocks.com/index.php
You can also use [Liteicon|http://www.freemacsoft.net/LiteIcon> or [candybar|http://www.panic.com/candybar> to apply new docks.
if you don't like the 3d dock look you can make it look 2d with [Tinkertool|http://www.bresink.com/osx/TinkerTool.html].

  • Can't connect to smb webdevice on leopard ... tiger is working

    Hi,
I have a problem with my MacBook running Leopard (Update from Tiger). I try to connect to a network storage. I type the uri: smb://192.168.2.1/Musik
Leopard asks me for a username and password... after this dialouge '192.168.2.1' appears in the finder at the 'shared'-sidebar. If I click on it, it shows me the 'Musik' share. If I click on that one it throws an error (-42) and that's it. The entrys stay where they are but I can't access them.
On my iMac (running Tiger) it works without any problems. Whats happening here?
Is this a samba problem? Are there any solutions? Does anybody have similar problems?
Maybe this is problem can be fixed by doing a clean Leopard install instead of running an update? And if so: If I do a clean install by restoring my drives by my latest timemachine backups, doesn't this throw back all the tiger stuff as well?
    Thanks for help,
    Michael

-36 is a bit generic, but usually means the Windows® machine is denying because of bad Password. Have you tried deleting that particular reference/share in Keychain Access and redoing it?

  • Can I uninstall leopard and install tiger without problems?

I'm considering purchasing a refurb iMac - I don't want an iMac mind you, but the Mac Pros are simply priced way over my head and I need a new computer!
I can't get a straight answer from Apple about whether it will have Tiger or Leopard on it but because of Adobe's refusal to make CS2 compatible with Leopard, I must use Tiger.
I've been told I can, if I must, uninstall Leopard and reinstall Tiger but I've also been told I'll end up with a host of problems doing that
does anyone know if this will work or not?
Apple is driving me crazy... no one will asnwer that question for me
and why they don't have a mid-range Mac Pro is beyond me but what do I know?
    thank you

    Hi liliths!
I look at the Apple Store refurbs list on a daily basis.
The longer you wait, the higher the chances that you will receive an iMac that was produced following Oct 26, and was therefore released with Leopard as the MINIMUM version of OS X. Currently, I'd guess that there is VERY little (almost zero) chance of that - today - but more chance as each day passes.
A refurb purchased now will have Tiger on DVD, and Tiger installed. The box will contain an upgrade disc that will install Leopard.
As time goes on, Apple will start to receive Leopard Macs (Leopard on DVD, and installed, but no Tiger) produced after Oct 26 that get shipped back from the stores after buyers have returned them. Those returns to Apple, and Apple's refurbishment process, do not occur overnight. Those Leopard Macs will not be able to run Tiger, or if they will run it, it will not be supported by Apple (no phone support/no warranty until Leopard would be installed).
Refer to this Apple Support article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25497
There are some (lower-priced) Mac Pros sold with the slower processor option, but they are seldom seen on the refurb list, and sell quickly when do appear. One would certainly sell within minutes of being placed on the list this close to the holidays. (A good alternative at a close price w/o sales tax: eBay 250194178376)
There are others besides Apple selling the older production Macs and advertising that they have Tiger on them, not Leopard. (From a third party, I very recently purchased a Mac Pro NIB with Tiger only.) Those units will be available less and less as each day goes by. I have purchased a Leopard family pack for possible future use.
Don't wait too long to make up your mind, or the choice will no longer be available for you:) A mid-priced Mac Pro might be one of the last G5s, so you might want to look at eBay item 120191603098 (I have no affiliation on either eBay item, just a bystander).

As to the question iMac vs Mac Pro or G5 - do you already have a display for a tower? A big factor in the decision.

When you installed Snow Leopard, Tiger was replaced, leaving your programs and files intact.
What is causing your freezing problem is unknown, you can take Kappy's advice and remove everything, but you lose your files and free iLife programs that came with Tiger/new machine.
The 10.6.3 disk you "upgraded" with has the full 10.6.3 on it, but no free iLife suit, so a erase and install will remove what you already have installed.
You can try to locate your problem without the erase and install method by running through this list of fixes.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
But before you do anything, backup your personal data off the machine to a extenal drive and disconnect.
    Most commonly used backup methods
Because if you have to follow Kappy's advice and wipe and install 10.6 fresh, it will cure your problem in nearly 99% of cases, but you have to rebuild everything. All programs and files.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
If this is all too much for you, then STOP and call a local PC/Mac service or competant friend to assist you.
Yuo might need to install more RAM into the machine to make 10.6 run better as well.

  • Actions compiled in Leopard compatible in Tiger?

Has anyone experienced issues with compatibility between the Leopard Automator and Tiger Automator? I am trying to update my action, but it only seems to work in Leopard. I took the old code that worked in Tiger, compiled it in Leopard, and now it doesn't work in Tiger. Same with the new code I am working on.

Same issue here, even for a very simple action i was asked to create for someone (aka selecting a folder, listing its content into a text file). i know, TIMTOWTDI, but i'd expect that for such simple flow, there wouldn't be any compatibility issue.
Same problem whether saved as an app or as a workflow (the source is Leopard 10.5.1, the destination is Tiger 10.4.11).
    Strange...

  • Performance speeds Tiger vs. Leopard

I know others have asked but they did not get any in depth answer.

I have a 1.25 Emac, with 1Gb RAM. Tiger runs fine and all, minus flash video, but the upgrade path on the software end is starting to dwindle. (for instance iTunes)
With the same hardware set up how much of a performance change would I see running X.5?
I have heard conflicting stories. And if I bumped it up to 1.5GB would the performance increase be notable.

Years ago there was a work around for turning off Quartz Extreme on older versions of OSX
I believe you are thinking of another QE issue. QE was not supported for PCI video cards like in the G3 minitowers and the first G4s. QE would, by default only work with an AGP video card. There was a hack to change QE support from AGP to a PCI card. It worked but w could cause other PCI cards to stop working.
Having uses a PCI G3 lacking QE support for years, trust me when I say you do NOT want it turned off. 2D actions like scrolling and dragging are miserable.
I agree with the wise Hobo--Dashboard remains running in the background once you activate it. Widgets that have to "phone home" regularly (site monitoring widgets; web cam widgets; some weather widgets) can eat a lot of resources. YOu can either completely disable Dashboard or, what I did: get the amazingly useful widget DashQuit:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/dashquit_berenguierduncan.html
It lets you use Dashboard and then turn it off with a click. Very nice to have. Lets you get the benefit from widgets without paying the performance price when you are done widgeting.
I don't consider Spotlight a big resource hog except when you first upgrade the system. I upgraded my G4 tower from 10.4 to 10.5 last evening and the initial Spotlight indexing ran for several hours. Now it's finished and things are back to normal. With normal computing patterns, Spotlight will run only for short intervals. The only times I had it seem obvious after the initial indexing was when I moved a larger number of files from a backup drive to my boot volume.

  • Tiger vs Leopard performance

    What is the fastest?
I currently have leopard installed, but am thinking of going to Tiger as I find Leopard quite laggy.
    I have a fast HDD, 2GB ram 1.67ghz PPC.
    So what do you think?

To piggyback off Peter's advice about Dashboard: after a restart, Dashboard is loaded but darned near dormant, idling at a very low CPU usage level (you can confirm with Activity Monitor). Once you acces a widget, they all become active and start using much more resources.
I found a widget that will shut down the open widgets when you're through with them. Dashboard goes back the same sleepy state it's in after a restart. Really helps considering so many widgts are designed to "phone home" when active, thus using some bandwidth in addition to processor power.
I keep Dashboard on all our modern Macs because there are items I like to use from there. However, they all have the extra shut-down widget for when it's not needed.
    The widget is here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/dashquit_berenguierduncan.html
I don't think its display of widget RAM usage is accurate but it certainly puts Dashboard in its proper place--a humble servant who only works when beckoned and quietly returns to its quarters when not needed.

  • Base model Mac Mini Leopard Performance

    Hi im new around here.
I have had a Macbook for about a year now. The only upgrade I got when i brought it was 1gb of ram (was 512mb standard at the time).
I also have a 6 month old pc that im bored with, and as macs can now run windows i have no need to have the pc so will be selling it on.
Im thinking of getting a Low end Mac Mini with the 1gb of ram and 1.83ghz processor. How well will this run leopard in comparison to my Macbook running Tiger?
Im hopeing that it will run in a similar way or better but not keeping my hopes up :\
    Cheers for any help

I think it will be very similar in performance to running Tiger on your 1 Gig Macbook.
And in some ways, more responsive, since the Finder is less likely to beachball when waiting for network resources.
And if you track down legacy apps that cause Rosetta to run -- and replace or eliminate these apps -- then performance will be even better.
Utilities > Activity Monitor is a good tool to find those old legacy PPC apps.

  • Project compatibility: Leopard vs. Tiger, PowerPC vs. Intel

Gotta question... We are about to upgrade our older edit bay to a new mac pro, but it is VERY IMPORTANT to us to continue to share project files. The newer one is a G5 with OS 10.4.11, and obviously the new one will be a Mac Pro with 10.5.
Is there any published information on whether FCP 6.0.2 and Motion 3.0.2 projects are fully compatible across Leopard/Tiger machines and across Intel/PPC machines? I could not find any searching Apple's website.
I'm guessing some of you with rotating upgrade schedules have already faced this question!

Its not the OS version or PowerPC/Intel architecture that matters. Its the version of Final Cut Pro that matters. If both computers are using Final Cut 6.02 for example, then the project files will be exchangeable. On the other hand, if one machine has FCP 5.x and the other has 6.x, then the newer version will open the older version file, but once you save it with the newer version, you can't go back to the older version.
There are also some differences within major versions. Sometimes one 5.x release is not compatible with a 5.y release. I can't recall where the breaks were made. But it doesn't matter if you have the same point release on both machines.
If you mix Intel/PowerPC, then you'll at least need both machines to have FCP 5.1 or later since earlier versions aren't compatible with Intel processors.

  • Permissions are not shown correctly in Get Info on Snow Leopard client, using Tiger server w/ ACL's

Invoking "Get Info" on a file or folder which is on a shared volume hosted by a G5 running Server 10.4 fails to show meaningful permissions when done from a 10.6 iMac.  It says only that the user has "custom permissions", which is true since there are ACL's in operation.  However, the Owner and Group POSIX settings are not shown, only the Everyone setting shows, making it impossible to determine which user created the file (in order to resolve issues when permissions prevent intended action).  The same file or folder will show Owner and Group on 10.5 systems, as well as at the 10.4 Server itself, so we do have a workaround.  I have noticed, though, that I have run into permissions restrictions where I should not, such as creating a folder on a shared volume using a 10.6 system, and then not being able to save into that folder from the same system/user.
Is there something about the implementation of ACL's in Tiger that confounds Snow Leopard's Finder?

    Hi,
I did two things to get it working, and haven't taken the time to sort out which did it.  But it is working so it's good enough for me.
First I followed TeenTitan's suggestion, and also checked "Allow printing from the internet".  I'm behind a firewall so not too concerned I'll get someone's odd photo on the printer.
Second I went back to server admin, selected the queue under queues in the Print service, then selected IPP and deselected LPR.  Bonjour went grey but stayed checked.
After this I see the printer with "@ server name" appended, and it added the printer drivers like it should.
    So all working well.

  • File sharing trough Leopard Macs and Tiger macs

Is it not possible to share files via "afp://" when one computer is having Leopard and another is having Tiger or am I just doing something wrong?

After collecting some traces and fiddling a little, I find I can connect to the OS 9 host from the Leopard client if I simply enter the relevant IP address in the connection request. What I can't seem to do is get Leopard to use NBP to find out this information, given the OS 9 host's 'Appletalk name'.
So it would seem that Leopard (the way I have it 'configured' at least) is not making 'full use' of AppleTalk protocols—either to resolve names or to advertise its presence. Does anyone know if this is just a configuration option that I've overlooked, or something deeper than this?
