Leopard replacement for Landau's Mac OS X Help Line book?

Can anyone recommend a Leopard replacement for Ted Landau's Mac OS X Help Line? I have the 10.3 and 10.4 versions of this invaluable troubleshooting guide and wanted to recommend the 10.5 version to a friend with that OS, but I just found out that he decided not to update it for Leopard. Would really appreciate knowing about a similar comprehensive, literate, easy-to-understand troubleshooting manual for 10.5, if there is one as good as Landau's. Thanks for any good suggestions!

I'm traveling and haven't had a chance to check it out yet. But I'll look at it as soon as I have a chance to get to a bookstore.
I'm actually trying help out a friend who's just bought her first Mac in about 10 years, after years of working only with Windows--want to save her investing in a bunch of expensive manuals that tell you everything you need to know, occasionally in English, except how to find out what's wrong and fix it, which is the only thing I want to know! I've used Landau's guides for Panther and Tiger, and was dismayed to find out that he didn't feel like rewriting 1200 pages for Leopard. So I'm curious to see the book you recommend, which sounds good--will let you know.

  • Do I need to buy a particular 10.5 Leopard DVD for my Power Mac G5

I have been having problems with my Power Mac G5, which can only be resolved by reinstalling leopard, and since I don't have the DVD, I have been looking for a 10.5 Leopard DVD for my Power Mac G5. However I have noticed that some discs say they only work for a particular kind of mac ( which is true, since I attempted installing leopard with a macbook pro dvd, which did not turn out well ). Do I have to look for a 10.5 Leopard DVD that is particularly for a Power Mac G5? If so, where can I find one?

Yes, Gray Install Discs, the ones that come with Macs are Machine specific.
    You need the Retail version.
Trouble is Apple no longer sells it, check eBay & such for the Retail version, not the Gray Discs...

  • Will Apple offer a matte replacement for the Alum Macs Glossy Screen?

I bought an Aluminum iMac; and yes I love the speed etc; but the one flaw in my opinion (others might disagree) is that horrific mirror like glossy glass screen.
The glare was intolerable for anyone with an artistic eye.
I solved the problem imperfectly with a anti glare film (photodon) and its a good temp solution.
But ultimately can anyone speculate whether apple will offer a replacement matte screen? I know its easily removable; can a matte screen be added in place of the glass and still have a great display? Might they offer it as an option in the future? If not; why not?
    thanks

It is simply a sheet of plate glass held in place with magnets. Supposedly it has some sort of anti-glare coating on it, but it's not apparent. You might try taking it off and bringing it to an art supply store to have them cut you an identically sized piece of anti-glare glass. I'm surprised that by this point there isn't already an after-market supplier making them for the iMac.

  • Problem port mapping for amsn on mac.. please help

I have snow leopard running, and last night I needed to use amsn opposed to the regular messanger for mac as I needed the video capabilities to connect with a user using windows and msn.
I've never had a problem before but that was before snow leopard. Apparantly the problem is with the windows side not amsn.
They suggest doing opening ports 6890-6900. I can't figure out what information to put in all the fields and if there is a way to enter the range or if you have to enter all them individually.
Also I found a document on how to do this and check the port is open via transmission which it said 1 port was as I only tried one. When I ran amsn it wasnt saying it wasnt open.
Can someone walk me through how to set up the ports. There are many fields that I dont know what to enter etc.
I should point out the problem was with the video. We couldn't intialize a connection and it was really really laggy. I tried rebooting and same thing.
    thanks

You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. You should then be able to change your settings and enable your iPod for disk use: iTunes Keyboard Shortcuts for OSX
If you have any iTMS purchases on your there the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
If you prefer something more automated there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others as well, they are generally quite straightforward. PodView has a facility for transferring full resolution photos as well as songs back from the iPod to your Mac. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

  • For printer LaserJet Professional CM1410 any chance to set printing password for windows and MAC

    Dear All
for printer  LaserJet Professional CM1410 any chance to set printing password for windows and MAC?please help?

What Windows OS are you using?  Are you networked?
If you are networked, you have to setup your file and print sharing options in order to require password assess.  If you are just trying to control specific files from being printed, you can do that, too.
If you are just trying to control the amount of printing off of a single PC with a printer, you could setup different accounts for each user and limit their access.
Some of the commercial printers can have password options, but I do not find any password options for the CM 1410, other than what I provided earlier.
If I have been helpful, a Kudo is always appreciated.

  • Install Snow Leopard for a specific mac

Using the retail Snow Leopard disc, is there a way to force it to install all the needed parts for a specific mac? My example is: I have a Mac Mini I want to use to set up what will be a replacement hard drive for a MacBook Pro. I want to make sure the OSX that gets installed for the MacBook Pro has all it needs to function as if it came directly from Apple or in other words, it's own specific default install.

My MacBook (2008) has all the same components listed in System/Library/Core Services and System/Library/Core Services/Menu Extras as my Mac Pro (2007). Even though the MacBook doesn't have a need for things like the Expansion Slot Utility and Memory Slot Utility and my Mac Pro doesn't use the IrDA.menu or ExpressCard.menu.
I don't believe there is a specific model install unless your computer came out after the retail disk was made but then all you would have to do is install all the updates and it should work. I believe I've even booted my laptop off of my desktop hard drive in target disk mode for troubleshooting/repair and don't recall seeing anything odd as far as menu items go (but its been a while). I could do it again if you really want but it's a bit of a hassle.

  • How to get a replacement mounting materials for a A1347 Mac Mini HD

    Hello,
I have purchased two Unibody Mac Mini's (A1347) on eBay (one 2010 and one 2011) and both have had the hard drives removed. Now hard drives are easier to replace, but the Unibody Mac's require a rubber or plastic cover and two mounting screws. A good picture of both can be found here:
    https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac+Mini+Mid+2010+Hard+Drive+Replacement/3113#s1548 1
My question is, is there an Apple replacement part that contains the cover and two screws? Has any one come up with a good working alternative? I guess if I could find the screws I could use a solid state drive since that wouldn't short on on the case (I think). It really seems like a shame to have these Mac's be useless because of some rubber/plastic and a few screws. This has to be something that an Apple tech runs in to occasionally (said he hopefully). Any input would be greatly appreciated, especially an Apple part number
I've thought of using anti-static bags, but I'm not sure if it could withstand the heat. And then there's the screws/
    Thanks,
    Jason M.

So you're saying the cover only needs to be on one side, even though the Apple cover goes over both. Okay, that makes sense -- the circuit board for the drive is only on one side.
As for the plastic, would blister pack work?
    Thanks for the help,
    Jason M.

The glass is part number 922-9795 and dvwarehouse sells it.  So that might give you an estimate of the minimum cost for replacement (unless you do it yourself).

Hi cb-anc!  Thank you for replying to my question.  The Library application has disappeared, not the library folder.  I went into the application a couple of days ago to trash some plist files and now the application has disappeared. I haven't upgraded to Lion but am still on now Leopard.

    No.
The iCloud services require 10.7.5, or higher.

  • Palm Desktop replacement for Mac and iPhone?

Since Palm Desktop is no longer in active development, is there a Palm Desktop replacement for Mac and iPhone?
    http://kb.palm.com/wps/portal/kb/common/article/33219_en.html#mac
I mean, a single application (not a bunch of them like Address Book, iCal etc) that works on Mac (desktop) and that can sync with the iPhone. Including all data from the current Palm Desktop:
    1. Address List
    2. To Do List
    3. Memo List
    4. Date Book
    Thanks.

If only Apple did something like that (all-in-one-application personal organizer with contacts, memos, calendar, to do lists, etc)
Well, they offer all those functions--Mail has Notes and To-dos show up in both Mail and iCal, plus Address Book. Clearly someone made the fundamental decision that separate integrated programs were better than an all-in-one, so I wouldn't expect an all-in-one from Apple in any foreseeable future. But you can send a feature request, if you like:
    http://apple.com/feedback
What would be interesting---and may exist, I haven't looked---would be if a third-party used the open access to iCal/Address Book info to build an all-in-one that integrated with Apple's separate apps, which could provide seamless iPhone/OS X integration while still letting people have the unified interface. Postbox uses Address Book but I didn't see any calendar/notes features in my quick check. Lots of apps build better replacements for Apple's individual programs--BusyCal, I think a Mail replacement, etc---but nothing unified that I've heard of.
However, my point was that you may be better off grabbing Entourage 2008 while it is still available than waiting for Outlook 2011, which is going to be a different program. Sometimes features go backwards, and Missing Sync compatibility may change or be delayed with Outlook 2011. I don't see the advantage of hanging onto PD until the very last minute.

  • Is Apple about to introduce a replacement for iWeb?? and where can I download iWeb to replace the one I lost??

Having spent a little time searching for a replacement download for iWeb (details of why below)  it seems that I cannot find it anywhere in Apple Land.  From my limited experience here (iphone,  macbook pro, airport extreme and airport express)  it looks like Apple gradually withdraws stuff prior to introducing something really exciting  to replace it.
    So
Question:   Is there a new super replacement for iWeb about to be introduced?
I cannot believe that Apple would take away something as great as iWeb (having read reviews and used it myself as a complete web novice)  without giving us something better.
I foolishly followed some genius advice and did a wipe/reload of Lion, prior to updating to Mountain Lion (my fault, I thought my lovely Macbook Pro was running a little slow - probably wasnt - just me being impatient.) Anyway, long story short,  I lost iphoto (got it back by re-purchasing but would like a refund - another string running with this),   iWeb - can't find it anywhere - asked questions here in Apple Land and am getting some conflicting answers.
I am sat in London without my iweb for a some days and would really like to get on with a bit of web stuff.
Question:  is there anywhere in Apple Land where I can download iWeb
Question:  can you confirm that the iweb programme will be on one of the disks that came with the machine?   (they are 100 miles away so I will have to wait, unless there is an easier way)
    Sorry,  rambling a bit.
Hope you can help out there
    Thanks
    Steve

The iWeb application was specifically created to be used with .Mac and then MobileMe and Apple withdrew support for iWeb several months ago, when it was announced that MobileMe would be no longer and would be replaced by iCloud.  MobileMe ceased at the end of June this year and has been replaced by iCloud, that does not offer web hosting, so no need for iWeb.
Apple stopped selling iWeb in its stores several months ago and has withdrawn support for iWeb, so no, you won't find either iWeb or iDVD for sale in the Mac App Store because Apple no longer sells it.
You cannot download iWeb, so if you want iWeb, you will have to purchase the iLife 11 boxed set from Amazon and this contains iWeb 09 which is the latest version of iWeb.  Apple does not sell this either.
If your Mac was running Snow Leopard, then it would have come with installation CD's, so yes, you should be able to re-load the whole of the iLife series, which includes iWeb, iDVD and iPhoto back onto your Mac running Mountain Lion.  You did not need to make an additional purcahse of iPhoto from the Mac App Store - you could have re-loaded from these CD's.  The only place you will get a refund is by contacting the Mac App Store. Nobody here can help you with that.
So if you want iWeb back, check to see if it is on you installation CD's - it should be if you have a Mac running Snow Leopard and put it back on your Mac from there.  If not, then your only option is to purchase the iLife 11 boxed set from Amazon and you can load iWeb from there.
As Apple no longer supports iWeb and there is no MobileMe any longer, then there are unikely to be any further updates to the programme and nothing else will come along.  You can still use the app though if you have it and it works with Mountain Lion, however, there may come a time when it won't work with future iOS updates, so it would pay you to look at the alternatives out there which are many and varied.  Take a look at RapidWeaver, Sandvox, Freeway Pro/Express, Flux 4 etc.  You can download free trials of most and some are for sale in the Mac App Store.
Also, please be advised that this is a user to user forum and everyone here who replies to you is a user, so you are not talking directly to Apple here.
Give Apple feedback directly by going to http://www.apple.com/feedback.
