Leopard semi installed on imacg5

Got an error message halfway through installing Leopard on my imacg5 (the installer could not validate the contents of 'BaseSystem' package...") but when I try to reboot from my hard drive it tells me that the hard drive is running 10.5. I get a log in screen but it does not accept my user id and password. Tried to reinstall 10.4 using the install disc that came with the computer but no luck with that either. Help!

I saw this same message when I upgraded from Tiger (10.4.11) yesterday.
I ran some memory tests and it turns out that on my Mac (Digital Audio) the third RAM slot on my board is a little flaky in that it sometimes caused memory tests to fail though taking ANY of the memory cards out of that slot made the tests succeed. Normally it never causes a problem but it can trigger this message when installing Leopard.
Since I used "archive and install", the failed installations left my Tiger installation intact so I was able to boot into Tiger and run more tests.
I took a 256 MB RAM card out of the third RAM slot and as soon as I did that, the installation has worked fine. I should also add that as soon as I got the base Leopard OS to install, I was able to use Software Update to bring all the software up to date and then reinstall that RAM in the third slot without incident.
So what sounds like a bad DVD could just be a really unfortunate and inaccurate error message about RAM tests failing on install.

Do I need to install boot camp on Windows 7 as well as on Lion? I already installed it some years ago on Leopard when installing Windows Vista on my Macbook Pro. But now after installing Windows 7, many things in windows doesn't work (sound etc.). I made a clean installation because I needed to go from 32 bit to 64 bit.
Or should I just update bootcamp in Lion? (cause when I search for "boot camp" in Windows 7 there's no result)

Lion's Boot Camp Assistant 4.x should have downloaded Apple drivers as part of also partitioning.
You need Apple drivers. And you then need to add on your own audio driver.
You can run Assistant at any time to download and save a set of drivers.

  • Can't get Leopard to install on iMac G5

Can't get Leopard to install on iMac G5
Hi folks, I'm trying to install Leopard on my 20" iMac G5, but the install never completes. I get an error related to "essential package" failing or some such. I'm using a retail copy of Leopard.
I've read that many people have had trouble loading Leopard on the G5, but I don't now what the real problem is, or what the correct solution would be to making the install from the disc work.
I've also read that it might be a problem that the iMac G5s might not know how to read the install DVDs properly (despite the disc being verified earlier in the process).
I know the problem isn't the disc media because I have two separate retail DVDs of the Leopard installer (10.5.3). I tested them on other machines and they have worked. I even tried installing from a disc image of the installer, but no luck.
    Any ideas?

The iMac appeared to work correctly under Tiger, but it did have a problem. I had just got un-repairable error on the 4-year old drive that came with the machine. I installed a new Seagate barracuda hard drive because of. This was all before the Leopard install attempts.
Permissions were all repaired. New drive and other HDs were all verified. All devices were disconnected for install attempts. Tons of space on newly formatted drive, as well as other external drives I tried this on. So it's not the media, and it's not the hard drives.
I am using third-party RAM. Tech tool indicates that it is okay. Perhaps I should try installing with only the RAM that came with the machine.
I contacted Applecare several days ago and they said the usual. Repair disc. Repair Permissions. Try install. No good? Then try reformat from Tiger and install Leopard on clean HD. No luck. The next thing they would suggest is forwarding the issue to a specialist within applecare.

  • Removing Snow Leopard and Installing only Windows on Mini

I've owned my Mac Mini now for about a month; it was my first immersion into OS X and, quite frankly, I do not like it. I do like the physical form of the mini and figured I would just delete Snow Leopard and install Windows 7 (preferably 64 bit) on it.
Can this be done? I don't want to use boot camp and lose all my partitions. I want it to be a Windows only machine.
    Thanks for your time.

David is right. you need boot camp in order to install winsloth on a Mac.
one way to go about that would be to install Mac OS X on an external drive, boot from there and use boot camp assistant to create one big partition on the Mac's startup disk for the winsloth installation.
on the Mac side, use system preferences > startup disk to select which system is used to start up.
nevertheless, i would @ least browse the boot camp forum for user tips on how to best achieve what you want.
    good luck !

  • Safari and other aplications super slow after update to Snow Leopard. Installed the update combo and nothing happened, still super super slow. Any tips to solve this?

After updating to Snow Leopard (to install Lion later), Safari and other aplications became super super slow and Preview is not working properly, I can't print anything that was opened with Preview. Already installed the Combo update, nothing happened, Safari still taking hours to load any site. I honestly regret downloading Snow Leopard, the older version worked so much better... Hope Lion is smarter than Snow Leopard...

  • Can leopard be installed on my powerbook G4 500mhz computer?

can leopard be installed on my powerbook G4 500mhz computer?

Note: Leopard lacks access to the Classic environment.  Though Mac OS 9 booting is still possible. If your desire is to access a modern iPhone, iPad, or iPod, you also don't have built-in USB 2 support.  A PCMCIA USB 2 card is likely to be underpowered for said devices unless they have their own wall powered adapter.  iTunes 9.2.1 which is 10.4.11 compatible, is able to access older iPhones and iPods as is indicated here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes_version_history
And Boot Camp is only available to Macs that are new from 2006 and more recent. Consider those facts before attempting to upgrade said machine to 10.5. Apple made USB 2 available with the September 2003 Powerbooks and newer models.

  • Can't install Leopard After installing Linux

I installed Debian on my power book G4 for a work project knowing I was going to buy Leopard and install that any way. Having finished with Linux I purchased Leopard but I can't get any further than "You nee to turn of your computer" screen that comes up after a few seconds of reading the ROM. I have tried trashing the Linux build with dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=4k count =100 which trashes the Linux image but does not help me install. Can anyone suggest anything as I want my apple back

Have you tried forcing the notebook to boot from the optical drive by holding the 'C' key immediately after starting the computer? (Obviously you must put the disc in too.) Hold the 'C' key down until the grey Apple appears, then you can release it. Getting the computer started, holding the 'C' key and popping the disc into the computer all at once can be a handful so sometimes you have to power down the computer and start it a second time.

  • Network issues with Leopard fresh install

I have an iBook that I was running Leopard on with no issues yesterday. It is no longer my main computer, so I wanted to wipe everything and start from scratch with a fresh install of Leopard. The install went smoothly. I did an Erase & Install setup from a Leopard Upgrade disc (but already had Leopard on my system so upgrade verified OK). When I booted up for the first time, it appeared everything was working normally.
I went online, downloaded a couple pieces of software I frequently use, and then started to set things up. This is when I ran into issues. I could browse the web without a problem. I could set up email with POP access, but not IMAP. AIM with Adium connects just fine. Tweetie won't connect. Dropbox won't connect. It's like some ports are being blocked, but others aren't, and I can't figure out why.
    I have tried/verified:
    OSX firewall is off
    Restarted router/cable several times
iBook is in router's DMZ- outside of router firewall
    Repaired permissions
    Reset PRAM
Anyone have any suggestions or other troubleshooting ideas?

Here are the steps to selling*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/selling.html
Mac Pros that shipped with Leopard should install from the Mac Pro labelled discs. Those that came with pre-Leopard, you should still include the Mac Pro discs, though if you desire to install Leopard on them, you should also include the Leopard discs that are retail. Leopard retail looks like * and do not say Upgrade, DropIn, or OEM.

when i try to install snow leopard with install disk, it has me restart the computer instead of installing. can anyone help me figure out how to get the disk to actually install?

Ok, it's just a glitch that it's not auto-rebooting from the disk.
Please backup your personal files off the machine to a regualr external drive and disconnect all drives before doing anything
Take the 10.6 disk out and clean and polish the bottom with a very soft clean cloth and a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol to cut the oils.
Stick the disk in and reboot holding c key down, this will make it boot from the disk and you can install Snow Leopard that way.

  • Did a leopard clean install and restored via time machine

    Hi
Just done a leopard clean install and restored data via time machine, now when i run time machine i cant go back in time to restore other bits and bobs, any ideas
    thanks

This is not meant to be a snide comment, but I use Carbon Copy Cloner and Super Duper not TM. Used TM for a while but got tired of it, changed to CCC and then when Super Duper was updated for Leopard moved back to SD. I like it because (both SD and CCC) can be scheduled for whenever you want to run it and it only backs up files that have changed since last update. It also produces a bootable disk.

  • Leopard UB Install

I have an iMac G5 (ambient light sensor) running Tiger 10.4.11 and I will soon upgrade it to Leopard.
What I want to know is : will the Leopard installer install the Universal Binary version of 10.5 or will it install the Power PC part only ?
The reason I ask is that, as I plan to buy an Intel iMac in a month or so, I would like to clone my G5 Leopard internal disk and drop it in the new Intel iMac's internal disk.
It woud be soooo much easier to clone my actual environnement and bring it to the new Intel Imac than having to build it from the ground up. That is, of course, if my iMac G5 gets the UB version of Leopard.
    Thanks !

I've seen quite a few posts of people having problems while using migration assistant from PPC to intel.
Having problems while using Migration Assistant & having problems caused by Migration Assistant are two different things. It's very easy to succumb to post hoc type evidence when talking about problems with the OS because so many posts here & in similar forums focus more on reporting problems than on proving causes.
The result is long lists of things to avoid because they might be the cause of one or another problem. Occasionally, a causal link is established with some specific problem, but much more often these user recommendations begin to acquire an uncomfortable resemblance to superstition; that is, a widely held body of beliefs that is not justified by demonstrable links between cause and effect.
If that was entirely harmless it would not be of much concern, but an issue not often considered is that users sometimes do not have the skills to follow the steps exactly or completely, or just decide that the whole list is too hard or time-consuming for them to do & do nothing at all, including backup up their data before applying any update, migration, or whatever.
And of course, there is always the problem of these lists getting longer & more complicated over time: if we don't require a causal link be established for inclusion, we don't have a good basis for eliminating anything except the most preposterous ideas about what we should do or avoid doing. So the lists are rarely culled & may contain a certain amount of out-of-date or useless information.
Finally, there is the very real problem of casting doubt on Apple's recommended procedures, which generally are carefully crafted to offer the highest effectiveness to the greatest numbers of users.

How can I re-install Snow leopard having installed Lion? The disk supplied states that I cannot use the version of 'Install Mac OS X'...HELP!

None of the instructions usually given for downgrading seems to mention the fact that you will lose some data in built-in applications, including at least Mail. When you installed Lion, your Mail database was converted from the format used by Snow Leopard's Mail to that used by Lion's Mail. There is no way to reverse that conversion. Therefore, you will lose your entire Mail database. If your messages are all stored on a remote server, that may not be an insurmountable problem, but otherwise you'll have to restore from the last backup you made before the upgrade, and then you'll still lose all changes to the database made since that time.
Another fact not often mentioned is that downgrading is usually the worst possible solution to a problem with Lion. But that's the answer to a question you didn't ask.

    Hello,
I wouldn't say the iMacs are perfect yet (not nearly as slick as my last iMac G4 or iMac G3) but a whole lot less buggy then the PCs I use at work! Apple has released two updates (iMac 1.3 and iMac 1.2.1 for Leopard and Tiger respectively) to improve stability. If these aren't installed when you get the machine you'll be offered them in +Software Update+.
I purposefully bought my iMac with Tiger knowing I would upgrade. It's very very easy to upgrade OS X so don't worry about whether Leopard is in the box or installed. Macs always have all the software on optical disc so you can completely erase the hard disk and still return it to it's factory state. Apple doesn't put disk images on the hard disk.
The upgrade process is so slick that my new iMac has all the software from my iMac G4 and even the web-history is there from before the machine arrived. (Migration Assistant can copy a whole user profile across).
I wouldn't hold your breath for offers on the iMac though. The only ones I've seen in the past are free inkjet printers or discounts on iPods for students.
    kind regards
