Leopard Server Install Fails

I have been trying to take a Tiger server to Leopard server, but every time I begin the actual installation process, the installation fails due to an unknown error. I have tried doing a clean install and a standard install but both fail. I have also tried erasing the volume first but I get an error saying the volume would not unmount (using Disk Utility from the Leopard install dvd). I was able to erase the volume by booting the xserve up from an external hard drive and using disk utility. I have also tried different install dvds but same problem persists. I have tried repairing the disk but it says nothing needs to be repaired.
Is this a sign that I have a bad hard drive and need to replace it or am I missing something?
Any help would be great.

  • Kernel Panic Leopard Server Install

Recently purchased a 8 core MacPro desktop with RAID card. It's going to function
as a server running Leopard Server 10.5. I wanted to configure the drives for RAID 5 and repartition. Ran into an issue where i could not boot from the Leopard Server install DVD. It keeps giving a kernel panic each time i try.
The install DVD works fine on PPC G5 or Intel Core Duo. It seems to be specific
issue with quad core model Macs.
I figured a work around by target disking the 8 core off a MacBook core duo machine.
Still would like to know if anyone else has seen this problem with the quad processor models.
    P.S.
I also tried booting with another set of Leopard server install DVDs and no luck???
    Thanks in Advance!!!
    John

    Hi
This could be because the copy of Leopard Server you are using does not have the hardware specific drivers the MacPro requires.
In which case install the standard OS as normal using the disks that came with the MacPro. Once you've done that define the account name and password as well as network settings as it would if it was a standard server install etc. Once you get to the desktop insert the Leopard Installer disk and use the installer version in the Additional Installs folder.

  • Remote Leopard Server Install Issues

    Hello,
I'm hoping someone can help me figure out an odd issue regarding a remote install of Leopard Server. These are the specifics:
    - I have a MBP client machine running Leopard with the server admin tools installed.
    - I want to install Leopard Server on a Mac Pro I have which has the Leopard Server DVD in its optical drive and is on the network under the same subnet.
I've been following the instructions on how to perform a remote install in the Mac OS X Server Essentials Second Edition book (the one endorsed by Apple for server certification) and the process they detail is not correct for me. Here's what I'm doing:
    1. Boot the Mac Pro from the Leopard Server DVD. It is currently at the initial setup screen where I choose what language I want to use.
    2. I launch Server Assistant from the Server folder under \Applications on my client machine.
    3. I choose the "Install Mac OS X Server on a remote computer" radio button and click on Continue.
    4. The applications finds my server in a ready state for installation: http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/8906/screencapturen.jpg - I select my server and click on Continue.
    5. I enter the first 8 digits of my server's serial number to authenticate and click on OK.
    6. I choose English as my install language.
    7. I click on Continue through all the agreements for the license.
    8. I select the local disk to perform the install (it's cleanly formatted) and click on Continue: http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/3852/screencapture1x.jpg
    9. The Server Assistant begins "installing" Mac OS X Server to my machine.
    10. After about 10 seconds, it restarts the remote Mac Pro computer: http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/2707/screencapture2.jpg
    11. My remote Mac Pro restarts. If I attempt to boot from the hard drive, I get a question mark inside a folder. If I boot into the DVD I'm back to step 1.
    12. Mac OS X Server Assistant proudly proclaims "Software from the Mac OS X Server installation disc has been installed on "My Server": http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/305/screencapture3.jpg
At this point I'm back to the beginning. Am I doing something wrong?? Is this application just being r e t a r d e d?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks guys

You will definitely need the assitance of the AAA administrator, troubleshooting on the AAA client side shows only a fraction of what is going on.
Ask her or him to do the following:
The most important and also easiest thing is to check the "failed attempt" log and look if there is any entry at all for your ASA.
If there is an entry it should be self-explaining like "unknown NAS" or "tacacs key mismatch" - being convinced about a correct config and verifying it is two different things.
I have seen weird things like entering a key on a AAA server via a remote desktop and the keyboard settings were mismatched: english/german resulting in swapped letters "Y" and "Z" - never trust your config until you verified it.
If there is no entry at all then it could be a device on the path which is dropping tcp/49 but permitting ping/traceroute or some device is translating the address of the ASA (well in that case you should see an "unknown NAS" in the failed attempts).
Do you have the possibility to connect a device to the inside network of the ASA like a notebook? If so, try to telnet to tcp/49 of the AAA server, you should see right away, whether tcp/49 is permitted (get a blank screen immediately=connectivity, timeout=no connectivity)
That's all you can do from your side, sadly tha ASA doesn't have a telnet client.

    MiKa

  • Leopard Upgrade/Install Fails and Fails Miserably

Normally, I love my Mac. It's a Dual G5 PowerMac. I've owned Macs forever. Usually, I don't have any problems. Until now.
    Here's my story:
My HD failed the Sat. before Xmas. I had my computer backuped to an external firewire drive, so I wasn't too worried. I got two SATA drives and replaced my single internal drive with a RAID 1 pair. Autobackup now. Simple. I restored the backup to the mac and everything was running smoothly under Tiger.
I got the Leopard Upgrade for Xmas and went to install in on New Year's day. My computer still isn't working.
I booted it up from the DVD and let it run through the DVD check. Everything was fine. I went in and, even though I knew better, I just told the installer to upgrade the current OS folder. THat got almost all the way through when I got a rather harsh, "THERE WAS SOME ERROR INSTALLING ESPON STUFF. INSTALLATION FAILED." warning. What's odd is that I don't have an Epson printer.
I rebooted and tried a clean install, copying over my directory and network settings. Well, that sort of worked. I got into the desktop, but my folder/network stuff hadn't copied, and many control panels would crash the "system settings" program.
I gave up, rebooted back into Tiger from my external HD, and restored the RAID pair back to Tiger. I then tried installing Leopard again, a clean install this time. Again, I got to the "Epson" error and had to bail.
I then restored and tried again.
It got to about "9 minutes reamining" and sat there for several hours before I gave up and reimaged the HD. Again.
That was this AM. I tried to install Leopard straight away with a clean install, pulling over my folders/network stuff. When I left for work, it was sitting at "14 minutes remaining..." When I got home, it's sitting at, "14 Minutes remaining..."
I'm seriously at my wit's end here, and I'm ready to throw the install DVD at a Genius at the Genius Bar...
What's going on and why won't Leopard install correctly on my machine?
    Thanks!

I've read many reports that say there are problems with Leopard installing to a raid that was created with older versions of Disk Utility.
"The only workaround was to do a fresh install of Leopard on my external FireWire HD, transfer all data using the Migration Assistant, erase the RAID and recreate it with the latest Apple RAID software, install Leopard on the new RAID, and finally transfer the data from the FireWire HD with the Migration Assistant. This took a lot of time, but it worked and Leopard is running fine on my RAID, and the machine looks as if I did a straight upgrade."
I busted my raid apart when installing Leopard Server because of all the problems I had been reading about. It hadn't occurred to me that the raid should have to be set up with the Leopard DVD...

  • HELP... Mac Leopard Server Install

    Hi,
I did a clean install of Leopard server on a Mac Pro. When I open the server preferences pane, it "grinds" away for a while and then finally displays the services, but very slow... The same when opening server admin tools. It sees a server but takes a long time to display the information.
The only thing that is a bit odd to this newbie (very newbie) is that during the setup process I used office.companyname.com as the primary DNS. But the sever host name is Company-Name-Sever.local not sure if that means anything to you guys...
When I try to set up a macbook pro to the server it displays office.companyname.com, which doesn't work with the password. So I enter Company-Name-Sever.local which does work with the password, but takes a long time to show the services available, and the list doesn't include all the services that users is assigned....
    What's up??
    Many Thanks!!

    Hi.
You do need (and Apple does not emphasize this enough), working forward and reverse DNS for OS X Server. It need not be on your OS X Server, but it is needed.
To change the server's FQDN after-the-fact, you need to use changeip in the terminal.
    enter: man changeip
    for more info.
Please, be very, very careful if you are new to DNS and your machine is on a publicly reachable IP !
If that is the case, please hire a demonstrably knowledgeable professional to help with your DNS. For example, have your ISP host your DNS. It It's not something you should ever "play" with outside of anything but a private network and with zone transfers disabled unless you know what you're doing.
For example, please read the whole thread,

  • Leopard Server Admin Fails "there is no server available"

My Leopard Server has been running fine for months, uprgraded to 10.5.6 without difficulty a few weeks ago. Today, the Server Admin application is throwing up an error "there is no server available at the address you entered", with a box to delete it or save it.
    Huh?
The server seems to be still running fine - mail continues to be delivered.
I note that this error has been reported before here and elsewhere, but there doesn't seem to be any comprehensive solution.
    I would appreciate any help.

    Hi
For the lack of any further information it's difficult to say? It could be anything or nothing at all? Have you tried a restart? Sometimes you'll see this error message if there's a problem with your keychains? You're more likely to see it if there is a problem with your DNS Service. Although not definitive does Workgroup Manager have a problem? Can you connect to the Server using Server Admin remotely?
You should be able to remove the server from the list and re-add it. You can use its .local name, its loopback address, its IP address or its FQDN. Whichever one its having a problem with use one of the other methods instead. Any or all of them should work.
To remove keychains you could use Keychain Access. Keychain Access > Edit > Keychain List. Select the ones you want and click the 'minus' symbol. I tend to not bother and remove them from /User/Home/Library/Keychains as well as /Library/Keychains followed by a restart. You can also 'reset' how Server Admin presents its interface on launch by removing its .plist from /Users/Home/Library/Preferences. Quit out if it first. Take the com.apple.ServerAdmin.plist to the trash, empty it and re-launch Server Admin. You might have to restart the server. There's a similar .plist for Workgroup Manager.
If you can't connect at all then you are probably looking at a problem with DNS Services. Can the server resolve itself to itself? Issuing host or nslookup for its fully qualified domain name followed by its IP Address should present a clearer picture. You could also issue:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
As this checks the validity of the Server's DNS. If it returns "DNS hostname is unavailable, please run the repair tool" then consult changeip's manual page. If it returns "the names match, there is nothing to change" then start looking at the physical structure of the network itself. An intermittent fault with the patch cable perhaps or Switch port?

  • Any Leopard Server Install Advice/Precautions?

I have a XServe which is running Server 10.4 like a champ. Our entire office is running NHD's off of this server and using files on an XRAID. I have installed Leopard on one of my client machines (an archive install) and it is VERY buggy. I have also installed leopard clean on a couple of other systems I have as backup stations (erased drives and installed) and they seem to be working perfectly fine.
The question is that I see so many posts of buggy systems and servers, I don't want to risk messing up my entire business installing this software on my server unless there are good failsafes that I can go back to if everything fails. Just wondering if anyone who has installed has any cautionary advice before I go ahead? Or is a clean install on the server the better way to go as well?
Also, I am hesitant to install leopard on any of my other client machines due to the problems I am having on the one that I did the archive and install. I am thinking that the best method would be a clean install on all machines but that will take more time to do. I just set them all up only a month ago (not looking forward to doing that again!) but if that is the best answer, that is what I will have to do to take advantage of some of the new features. Any one else discover that (clean install vs. archive and install) as the best answer?

    Hi icon mike-
It sounds like you are trying to talk yourself into something that you know is not a good idea.
The bleeding edge is no place to put a business. Think twice before venturing the rough waters that accompany any system update and subsequent migration.
I have been using Leopard since the day it was released and do not find it buggy at all. In fact I am quite happy with the stability. The eye candy takes up way too much horsepower for my liking but that is how it tends to go and I do digress.
If you insist I would recommend reading and understanding the migration guide prior to making any moves, then make sure you have 2 or 3 working backups of each system before doing anything.

  • Snow Leopard New install failed

I know there are several topics on this subject but I couldn't find one that matched my isue
My Spec: Macbook, 2.4ghz (?) Intel Procsesor, 4GB Ram, superdrive, 250GB Hard Disk (purchased off of eBay about 10 months ago)
I was using my Mac to rip some DVD's to put on my iPhone (home made from files on my old PC one) using Islysoft DVD Ripper. Anyway, one of the files that it was ripping must have been bad as it was stuck for ages. It was also making a funy noise, later I found out that it was due to a poor label, it took quite a few attempts to get it out, ending up with the laptop being on its side so I could grab the DVD out of the superdrive.
In the midst of all this I was trying to shut down the system as it had locked up, in theend I had to push the power button for10 seconds to get it to go off. Once I had got the DVD out I tried rebooting but it came up with a prohibitory/no entry sign and wouldn't let me in. I also had boot camp but the Windows partition was corrupt and had mising files too. I didn't get the original install disk with the machine, just a copy. When I tried installing this it must have been a bad burn as some of the files could not be loaded.
So I went back to my Windows partition on BootCamp, re installed it and al was fine and dandy, it worked OK.
So today I went out and got Snow Leopard from our local apple reseller (Square) and tried installing it. It came up with an error upon trying to install it, saying that it could not install on the original hard drive. After reading up on the net, it turned out I had to re partition. I decided that as I had not done much on Windows, I would go the whole hog and start off with a fresh 1 partition hard drive, as I use VMware fusion for my Windows use anyway.
So, fresh new hard drive, now it allowed me to install. But I got a message saying installation failed, please contact the software vendor. I tried installing again and got the same message
So seen as the hard drive has not worked for OSX since the crash, I am leaning towards that as being the problem. But I have also seen on here that it could be RAM also, possibly came unseated during earlier trying to get the DVD out?
I am seriously considering getting a new hard drive as I am thinking of using my external hard drive for time machine as opposed to documents. But before I do I wanted to ask on here to make sure of what the problem is, before I spend out my money. It seems strange that Windows worked fine (albeit on a different partition) and OSX does not, but there you go, I ditched Vista to get away from all this palaver!

Hi Russ, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
When you repartitioned your drive, did you choose GUID?
This could potentially cause the problem or your disk may be on it's way out.
    Run http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15837/rember for your RAM.
Also run Apple Hardware Test. Option-boot from your SL DVD and choose Apple Hardware Test.
    Let us know.

  • Snow Leopard update install fails (crashes) on iMac running 10.5.8

I'm having some issues installing Snow Leopared (upgrade) on my iMac -- A 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.5.8. It crashes consistantly. I've tried ensuring I had no locks, unplugged my external hard drive and ran the disk check from the Utility menu (no problems detected) with no luck. I start the install, and about 25 minutes in, one of the threads crashes. I do have a small partition that I run Windows on, not sure if that might be part of the cause. We have two iMac's in the house, both purchased at the same time. One upgraded without issue.
Here's error from the log file from the install. I welcome any ideas or suggestions. Not sure what would be required if I wanted to "start from scratch" -- I only have the upgrade disk. No idea if I got the original OS disk when I got my iMac originally.

  • App Server Install fails - due to incompatible Message Queue

I had JES 2005 q1 installed in one of the test machines...now I am trying to set up JES 2005q4 on that. I cud install a Web Server on that ut when I tried to set up the App Server it throws up a msg stating that there is an incompatible version of Message Queue installed and hence installation cannot go ahead.
I am not able to find any instance of Message Queu setup....how do I detect and uninstall old versions of Message Queue??
    thx
    anand

I assume you are talking about appserver install on Solaris. Message Queue on Solaris is a package based install. The easiest way to uninstall the old version of MQ is: "pkginfo -i | grep Message" ---> "pkgrm all MQ packages".

  • Lion Server install fail

I'm trying to install Lion Server on a Lion system.
When trying to install Lion Server the server app installer wants to download additional things.
When it tries, the Server app says ":Can't install Server Essentials because you are not connected to the Internet."
My internet is up and running - that's how I bought the Server app and made this post to the Apple Support Community.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the Server app to see this?
    Thank you.

Hi Wozzar. Check out the following thread from iblueracoon. I had exactly the same issue as you and this solved my problem. All the best:

Hi! I've been having this same issue and I had been busting my head about it for a couple of hours. Whenever I went to create a partition to install windows and download the support software, it would pop up that message. The same for whenever I tried running a java application. An easy fix to this would be to go into system preferences > Network, next, create a new location and delete the old one(transfer your connections ofcourse). Then, connect to your current network. Now, just go into "advanced">"Proxies" and disable auto proxy discovery! It seemed to do the trick for me

  • Lion Server install failed - yet still labelled as installed in MAS

On my lion test machine, I decided to test Lion Server, so I of course got the redemption code, popped it all in. When the actual "download" started - it instantly said it was complete - I never saw the download icon in the dock for it. Under MAS Purchases tab, I see Lion Server as "installed" - but of course, there is no way it could be, especially not without a reboot.
I rebooted. Still only Lion Client.
I've tried pkgutil --forgetpkg com.apple.Server, but its still listed as "installed" in MAS. I don't see anything /Applications, or / that could be a "Lion Server Installer".
Any ideas how to flip the "install" switch, so I can try re-installing in MAS?
