Leopard Server Mail - Postfix or Cyrus?

After reading and rereading Leopard manuals on Leopard website, I am
still confused:
Is the Mail Service in Leopard Server Postfix or Cyrus?
Have found some excellent books on Postfix setup etc, but none on Cyrus.
Any suggestions on where to get background and info on best practices.
BTW -- Our mail server on 10.4.10 running fine -- migrating soon to Leopard
by way of erase and install.
Thanks in advance

Both!
The MTA (SMTP) is Postfix. The IMAP/POP server is Cyrus.

  • What is the correct way to teach leopard server mail about junk mail?

All my clients are using apple mail and they basically taught their own client each their own way of filter junk mail. This works ok...but after upgrading to Leopard Server I think the server can be trained with junk mail data too? If so, anyone know how to set it up? I only see options to mark mail as junk mail on the server side, nothing about training.

I have done it on a mac os 10.4 server, it works great. Have a look here

  • Will Windows Outlook clients be happy with Snow Leopard Server Mail Server?

Our network at work has a Windows SBS 2003 server - and 40+ XP PCs running office 2003 (and outlook 2003).
Can I set up Snow Leopard Server so that the Outlook 2003 clients will be able to use contacts, calendars and mail etc from the mac (mini) that we would purchase for this?
I'd love to get everyone on Mac here, but we can't cos our core application is windows only and we would still need the MSSQL server. I know - we could install parallels or virtualbox for the windows apps but that is extra expense, and tbh I don't think our users could cope.
    Thanks

    Hi
+"Can I set up Snow Leopard Server so that the Outlook 2003 clients will be able to use contacts, calendars and mail etc from the mac (mini) that we would purchase for this?"+
For mail yes. For calendars you will need 'assistance' using 3rd-party applications or helper utilities. The iCal Admin manual has more details of what is available:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iCalServerv10.6.pdf
Page 12. For Addresses/Contacts consult the Address Book Server Admin Manual for more details:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/AddressBkServerv10.6.pdf
Page 12. I don't see anything specifically listed so you may have to search for these yourself unless someone else posts with something more specific that works?
If you're expecting Exchange-like functionality you will be disappointed. If you really must have the functionality you're used but also want to move to the mac platform a better prospect (IMO) would be Kerio Mail Server:
    http://www.kerio.com/connect
Depending on what other services you may or may not want you may not necessarily need OSX Server? Then again you could as easily install KMS on a Windows or Linux box instead. In which case why swop from Exchange?

  • IOS & Snow Leopard Server Mail, Contacts, Calendars Account

Is there any way to add a single IMAP/Cardav/Caldav account in iOS 5, or OS X 10.6/10.7 that goes back to Snow Leopard Server? Adding each type of account works, but it'd be cleaner if I could setup one account with multiple services like I can with Exchange, iCloud, MobileMe, Yahoo, etc..
    Anyone have an idea?

This is the problem I'm trying to describe.  It is now happening multiple times every day.
Any advise would be appreciated.  The problem is the accounts are being de-accessed.

  • Snow Leopard Server Mail QUESTION!

I am running OS X 10.6.2 and I have a question regarding e-mail functionality. Currently we have an Xserve acting as our mail server then we have a microsoft exchange server in line in order to use connectors to route e-mail based on cost and size. Is there anything we can use to route e-mail straight from the Xserve and take the exchange server out of the picture?

After doing some more research I found that what I am looking to do looks like it can be achieved using postfix transport maps. The only issue I am still having is how to setup postfix transport maps to send mail out via 2 different gateways based on size.

  • Snow Leopard Server Mail - need attachments from mail server no longer on line.

    Switched to GMail
pulled in .pst file for outlook but it had been configured to leave attachments on server.
the mail server is no longer online - how do I get the attachments?
I have access to the server but do not want to risk the mail syncing with google and deleting the files on the old mail server.
The export was not done cleanly - now I have to go back to pull from server.
Is there a way to export a users mail with attachments from the server to a folder that can then be imported into regular mail program?
To make it more fun the person is on a windows XP using outlook - so I will need to get it from the closed server to his outlook.

Enable Finder to Show Invisible Files and Folders
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder.  At the prompt enter or paste the following command line then press RETURN.
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
    killall Finder
To turn off the display of invisible files and folders enter or paste the following command line and press RETURN.
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
    killall Finder
Alternatively you can use one of the numerous third-party utilities such as TinkerTool or ShowHideInvisibleFiles - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • A wishlist for Apple: Leopard Server mail services

    Apple,
At 10.5.2, we find that most of the problems with email accounts and VH sites are ... still broken.
After they are addressed (cull these forums for an indication of the problems the current code does not address), I'd like to suggest some other areas of improvement.
On a per-server, per-domain (or per-account) basis, can we set what happens to rejected mail. If a RBL or refuse item comes to the server, can we elect to choose between:
    reject and return to sender
    reject and discard
If the mail server supports such settings.
    That would be lovely.

Albeit, not through the GUI, you can adjust the behaviour of the content-filter to your liking.
Have a look at /etc/amavisd.conf. Many settings are explained in the file.
    In-depth information available here:
    http://www.ijs.si/software/amavisd/
P.S. This is a user to user forum. I recommend you use the feedback pages to send suggestions to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/server.html

  • Snow Leopard Server Mail disables access

This has been an intermitten problem for over a year.  Every once in a while multiple email accounts in the "Workgroup Manager: local" loose their check mark next to "access account".
On the client machine, the first indication that something is wrong is when the client (me) gets an error message saying the password does not work.
This is on a Mac Mini colocated in Florida.  I have 3 IP addresses and the emails work except when this crazy thing de-accesses.
It happens to email accounts on any of the 3 IP's.  There are no mail quota's set and they are all set for both POP and IMAP.
I can't add anyone else until this is fixed.  I'm using 10.6.8 Mac OS X Server.

This is the problem I'm trying to describe.  It is now happening multiple times every day.
Any advise would be appreciated.  The problem is the accounts are being de-accessed.

  • Os x snow leopard server mail server auto detection

    Hi All,
I have a Mac Mini Server on 10.6.8 running many services.
One of which is Mail. When I setup a email account in the mail app for a client, it doesn't auto detect the mail server. Is there a way to set this up?
    Thanks.

There are ways of configuring auto-discovery within email, but it's hardly trivial.
Essentially, the mail client will query a web server for a configuration file for the current user. The server needs to return an XML file that contains all the configuration data that the email client uses.
This is all largely based off autodiscover that Microsoft built into Outlook, and has become a pseudo-standard.
It's well documented on the net if you want to set this up for your users. This article is based around Outlook, but the same principle applies.

  • Does Leopard Server make user/email lists?

    Hi,
We presently use QuickMail server, mainly because it keeps a local user email list, and sends it to all users each time it's changed. So, the question is, does Leopard Server Mail admin have a feature like this? This will be a major factor in whether we migrate to Apple Mail vs staying with QuickMail.
The other factor is SPAM control, of course. Does Apple Mail have SPAM control features equivalent to Outspring's (QuickMail) new mail client "Outspring Mail"?
TIA for any insights on mail management,
    ...Tom

Have not figured out whether Apple Mail Server makes and sends user ("contacts") lists to all users as QuickMail does. I hope the engineers will look at this possibility. Perhaps as an Address Book feature. However, (against my better judgment) most of our clients are choosing to use Entourage as a client. If the list is usable by both Apple Mail and Entourage it would be even more useful.

We created users with the interface, and have an address

Our messaging system works internally with the client MAIL.
We also have an Internet domain "domaine.fr", this area is hosted
    In online.net.
We have personal e-mail addresses such as "[email protected]" always
    Hosted by online.
We can check our e-mails via the client MAIL by IMAP.
However, we do not send emails to the outside world, and especially
    "Domaine.fr" or "[email protected]."
    In the console admin Server:
-- LETTERS: we have turned the SMTP protocol allowing mail
Entrant, authorizing "Relayer outgoing mail over the host:

At the tab relay, we leave the config classic 127.0.0.0 / 8

  • Leopard Server's Mail Server Storage Format

I'm hoping to get some help with a migration project to Mac OS X 10.5 Server's mail server from another mail server. One of the main tasks is going to be migrating our archived mail from the old system to the Server's mail server. To do this I need to know what format Apple has chosen to store messages in with its mail server. As far as I can tell the messages are stored as individual files at /var/spool/imap/<username>/<folder> but I can't find any documentation about the format itself.
According to the docs it looks like Cyrus does this storage under the hood, has Apple changed any of this to suit the configuration Leopard Server or does it work just like Cyrus? There are also a bunch of databases kicking around which handle what appear to be some basic fast lookup information. However I don't think I'm going to need to create these since they appear to be repairable so once the files are present it should just be a case of repairing the databases and starting the server. I hope!
If any Apple Mail Server ninjas know more than I do I'd really appreciate some advice from someone who's gone before.
    Thanks

I forgot to check my cables. Apparently they have used crossed-cable for the previous Mac Pro to switch connection. After connecting the server to our AirPort Extreme things got a little sticky, using a straight cable did the trick.

  • Leopard server clients not receiving mail

Mail on our leopard server suddenly stopped recieving extrnal mail about a month ago then around 2 weeks ago stopped recieving anything internally.
When i telnet in it tells me the user is not enabled even though in serveradmin and WGM say it is.
I have tried building a new server, ive had the mx records checked, the router and line checked, and the dns on the server is working fine.
Any idea what might be casuing this?

Same here. Something caused file to change... I can see it by modification date.
First of all look at /etc/postfix/main.cf line with parameter inet_interfaces
it should be equal to all (inet_interfaces = all)
in my case it was changed to inet_interfaces = localhost.
Then i updated my system. And amavisd stopped working.
As it was our production system, restored service by disabling virus/spam checking by commenting line
    #content_filter = smtp-amavis:[127.0.0.1]:10024
After doing this restart postfix or whole mail service from GUI.
it seems amavisd was no longer starting. i could see it from netstat and ps.
    tried to start manualy, but
    launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.amavis.amavisd.plist
    returned nothing found to load
i don't know what was the cause for this, but i needed to edit /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.amavis.amavisd.plist
    and change:
            <key>Disabled</key>
            <true/>
    to:
            <key>Disabled</key>
            <false/>
    after
    launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.amavis.amavisd.plist
    it started normally.

  • DNS/web-server hosted off-site. How to set up Leopard server for mail?

    Hey Everyone,
Brand new xserve with leopard server 10.5.2. Currently, Our web and DNS server for our domain,"company.com" is co-located off-site with an MX record of "mail.company.com" pointed at the static IP of the office where our mail server is. I want to replace the mail server with the xserve. With that in mind, how do I configure the DNS on the xserve during initial configuration to reflect that? Give it a self-referencing FQDN like server.company.office and see if the mail service can handle the domain hosted elsewhere?
I'm pretty new to servers and would love be able to keep this all in Standard but I'm not afraid to jump into Advanced if need be.
