Leopard sleep problem which seems related to Entourage 2008...

Hi all,
I have a MBP (3,1) running 10.5.2 and I noticed about 3 months ago that if I left the lid open the energy saver triggered sleep wouldn't kick in (very hot laptop next morning syndrome).
I've read a number of other threads on Leopard auto-sleep problems (which pointed to the HP AIO frameworks) but this doesn't appear to be the same issue I have...
If I quit Entourage 2008 then the computer will sleep after the correct period of time - and that's with no other changes to my normal use. Of course I'd like to not have to worry about quitting Entourage each time I might, maybe, just possibly not be back at the computer for a while.
Now in the system log I do keep getting the following strange entries:
/Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Microsoft Entourage.app/Contents/MacOS/Microsoft Entourage[914]: Warning: accessing obsolete X509Anchors.
I have no idea what this really does and I do appear to have such a file in the system called X509Anchors...
If I switch Entourage to Offline mode then the entries don't appear in the system log anymore but... the unit still won't sleep. It requires Entourage not to be running it seems.
Having not seen anything else on the discussions forum relating to Entourage 2008 preventing auto-sleep I'm beginning to wonder whether it's just me?!?
Anyone else seeing this effect? And most importantly, does anyone know of a fix?
I have tried the NMS sleep utility stuff and although it worked perfectly whilst I was testing it using Energy saver timings of 1 minute... as soon as I upped the time back to my usual 30 minutes for CPU sleep it failed to work again.
Any help much appreciated.

Ok two things based on the crash report and the steps you took right before the crash:
# Try to disable scrolling acceleration and restart Firefox. Does it continue to crash?
# Try Safe Mode and do the same task as above with email and the pdf [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]]
# Also pdf.js may be helpful to read pdfs in the meantime. You can change the default reader in the Preferences/Options > Application menu of Firefox.
# Try to clear out the downloads folder and update flash to version 14 (that should do it)
IF it crashes again please also provide the new crash signatures and we can take a look :-) Sorry for the crashing :-(

  • Leopard sleep problem (annoying)

I just installed Leopard on my macbook.
Usually i like to open my torrent client and let the stuff download overnight, so before in tiger, i will put the screen to sleep, but not the computer, coz if i put the computer to sleep, when i woke it, the internet will be disconnected and my downloads will be nothing.
So i do the same in leopard, i put the screen into sleep in the Engergy Saving panel, but when i woke it everytime, the internet got disconnected, and it feels like the whole computer is sleeping. its different from the one i had in tiger, anyone got the same problem?
    I would like a solution..Fast!
    Thanks!

  • WRT54G Problems (which seem to be common).

When I returned home today, it was to my (unfortunate) surprise that I stumbled upon the fact that my WRT54G router was not working correctly. I've tried everything that I can possibly think of. It -says- that I am connected, however I am not... when I go into the actual router to check the settings, however, something awfully peculiar showed up...\\     Firmware Version:      v8.00.8 build 001, Oct. 5, 2009

Now, my question is, would you be able to assist in this fact? It is awful late (3:02 A.M) to be contacting customer support VIA the phone, so any input would be warmly welcomed.
    Good day,

    What solution did you find?

most of my apps are stuck on 'waiting' have tried everything possible from what I read however nothing seems to work for me, does anyone know the right way PLEASE as it's very annoying....

When I open emails with PDFs I click on the attachment (doing this all on my iPad) it gives me the option to "open in iBooks", I accept then after that the document is sucked into my iPad but I can't do anything with the PDF after that.  Where is the actual file on my iPad? Why can't I email or send these PDFs to my cloud (Dropbox)?
It's like once they go into iBooks they're stuck forever.

I have an iMac (Mid 2010) and am running 0sx 10.8.5 and the WiFi always loses connection during sleep mode. I have seen numerous different solutions none of which seem to work. Can anyone help?

Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Make sure the network is on the preferred list by following these instructions. It's important to read the article carefully, as it's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. If you skip any of the steps, the problem may not be solved. Make sure the box marked
Remember networks this computer has joined
    is checked.
    2. Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading
Symptom: After restarting or waking from sleep, my computer might not connect to the Internet
    3. Reset the PRAM.
    4. Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    5. From the Location menu at the top of the Network preference pane, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click Apply and test.
    6. Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    7. Repair permissions on the startup volume.
    8. Turn off Bluetooth and test.
    9. Reset the System Management Controller.
    10. This step shouldn't be necessary, but has been advised by Apple Support in some cases, apparently as a workaround for a bug. Open the Energy Saver pane in System Preferences. If applicable, click the padlock icon in the lower left corner to unlock the settings. Enter your administrator login password when prompted.
Select the Power Adapter tab and uncheck the boxes marked
              Wake for Wi-Fi network access
    and
              Enable Power Nap...
if present. Then, if the computer is a MacBook, select the Battery tab and uncheck
              Enable Power Nap...
    11. Reinstall OS X.

  • Late '06 Mac Pro w/ Leopard Shutdown & Sleep Problems

I recently did a clean install of Leopard on a brand new hard drive for my Late '06 Mac Pro. I currently have all updates installed, and the system is running very fast and very stable. But!
I've been experiencing two problems over the week I've had Leopard installed, and I would just like to know if other MP users are sharing these as well...
    1. Half the time I wake the computer from sleep, the fans blast off for about 10 seconds before the desktop is shown. Sometimes when the computer goes to sleep, via Energy Saver, my hard drives keep spinning.
    2. Shut down takes an excruciatingly long time. My typical shut down lasts around a minute to a minute and a half.
I've read around and have seen a few problems like this, but I want to know if there are a larger majority of people with a Mac Pro who are experiencing either of these in Leopard.
It's not such a nuisance, being I don't have to wait for shut down and I can wait around a few seconds when waking up the computer. Though, here's to hoping 10.5.3 or a firmware update can fix these two issues!

I had re-start from sleep problems on my '06 MP. Root cause was NG ram. Replaced wit hApple ram from OWC.com and it fixed the issue. That ram caused other issue such as frequent spinning beachball and just the feel was not right.
What can you try? i'd suspect ram but first any attached devices such as a 7 port Belkin USB hub which messed with deep sleep on mine and was replaced with a CyberPower USB hub.
Also do a smc power manager reset. Just unplu everything and wait a few mins the attach Apple keyboard and mouse power up and see what happens. One thing at a time.

  • Terrible sleep problems after Leopard install

I just installed leopard on Thursday. Now, if I let my MBP go to sleep with the lid open (from the power setting), and I try to wake it by holding down the spacebar i get some serious issues. the screen comes on right away, but it is completely frozen. I have no cursor, no buttons work, the clock is stuck on the time the MBP went to sleep. If i close the lid, the screen just stays on. the thing is totally dead. i have to hold the power button to shut it down. it comes back up fine, everything smooth and no issues at all
then, I closed the lid so it could sleep overnight, and when i opened the screen in the morning, it took a long time to wake up. it just sat there with a black screen for a while and then finally woke. then everything was choppy. the mouse moved across the screen in 5-6 big "jumps" and the bouncing dock icons were not smooth. nothing was smooth. i was getting like, 1 FPS. programs opened slowly too. i restarted it and now it seems fine.
also, it is taking longer to restart than Tiger. mostly because it takes longer to shut down. tiger shut down almost instantly, but leopard is taking a few seconds.
I did a clean erase and install BTW.
has anyone else experienced this issue? what are some general things I can do to try to fix it? this is my first mac, and I've only had it for about a month, so I don't know many troubleshooting actions.
    thanks

I installed Leopard on Thursday as well. It worked fine yesterday and it was restarted a couple times since installation. I usually just close the computer's lid and put it away. I typically run on battery until I get the warning and then plug in (4.5 hours) I left it on charge last night and thought I'd put it into sleep by closing the lid. This morning when I went to use it, the battery was charged but it wasn't on. I had to press the power button and wait for it to boot. Once it booted, everything seemed to be fine. I did a shut down before taking it to work. When I went to use it at work, I booted it up on battery (which was at 99% after boot) and I used it for a while. I left the lid open idle for about half an hour and went back. Pressing the space bar brought the screen up but it was locked up. The clock was stuck at the wrong time, the cursor would move, but the keyboard did nothing and I couldn't click at all. I had to step away for about five minutes, came back, and dashboard was up. (I'd pressed F12) It wasn't scrolling smoothly in Finder (icon, list, column view) and Safari and Mail hung so I restarted. By this time, my battery was at 54% which seemed reasonable. Everything seemed fine and I closed the lid to standby. I went back to it three quarters of an hour later and it would not wake from standby. Pressing the power button did nothing. I plugged in and I started it up to discover it was a bit warm and my battery was at 0%. I worked on it for two hours or so and the battery was almost fully charged. I closed the lid to put it in sleep and put it in my bag. I took it home and went to use it an hour later and it was burning hot out of the bag. I've had it since March and it's never been that hot no matter what I've been doing. The battery was totally depleted and I turned it on and the fans ran at high speed for about twenty minutes. I could tell there was CPU throttling as scrolling was rather sluggish again. There was no abnormal CPU activity and it has cooled off to a reasonable level after about half an hour on. I didn't have any power/sleep issues in Tiger and everything was just fine before I did the upgrade.

It will make it easier to help you w/ your problem to know the  size and RAM installed.

What OS will your Garmin work with? Funny there was someone else that did that and upgraded to Yosemite and regretted it.
I'd say Lion if your Garmin is compatible.
Both Lion and Mountain Lion are downloadable from the Apple Store:

Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

Does my problem has anything to do with SSL for mail settings? Cause when I tried re-adding it says something that I should try without SSL, and I did what you said and it gives me this "The IMAP server pop.mail.yahoo.com is not responding. Or is Yahoo doing this to me?!

I'm having a real problem with my cursor which seems to have developed a mind of its own, zigzagging allover, highlighting things without my command, and basically making my MacBook unusable (it's taken me half an hour just to compose this!).

There are several possible causes for this issue. Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried until it's resolved. Some may not apply in your case.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article, and also this one, if applicable. A damaged or defective AC adapter could be the cause, even if it's the right kind.
    2. Press down all four corners of the trackpad at once and release. If there's any effect, it's likely to be temporary, and in that case the unit must be serviced or replaced.
    3. Open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and delete all pointing devices other than the trackpad, if applicable. Disconnect any USB pointing devices. By a "pointing device," I mean a peripheral that moves the cursor, such as a trackpad, mouse, trackball, or graphics tablet. A plain keyboard is not a pointing device.
    4. Start up in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you restart as usual, stop here and post your results. Do the same if you can't start in safe mode. If there was no difference in safe mode, go on to the next step.
    5. Reset the System Management Controller.
    6. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad or mouse, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    7. A swollen battery in a portable computer can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced without delay.
    8. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built-in trackpad of a MacBook to behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    9. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    10. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think that your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
    11. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine and/or external trackpad tested.

  • Hi folks, I have a PowerBook G4 running V10.4.11, 1.5GHz with just under 1G RAM and I have a problem which feels permission related but I'm lost as how to fix it.

For example, when I open the "System Preferences", the task opens but locks up and my mac sits polling on something. The little rainbow coloured thinking wheel just turns and turns until I force a quit. The second time I attempt an open, it is always successful.
This is starting to happen with various applications. They spawn but then lock up seemingly looking for something that isn't there in the first instance but which seems to be created after the forced close.
Some applications don't get as far as the thinking stage. After double clicking on an app icon, they graphically expand but nothing happens.
    Any thoughts? Cheers in advance.

    Ciao.

  • Start up and waking from sleep problems. early 2011 macbook pro i-7 2.0

Been having problems with my computer starting up and waking from sleep.  If i shut the lid it wont wake up upon reopening the lid unless i hit the power button.  After hitting the power button it will restart automatically and you hear the chime and the cdrom ejecting , once the gray screen pops up it restarts again this time you hear the cd rom making the ejecting sound twice then it will start up as normal.  Once it finally starts up my date and time has been reset to jan 2008.  Other times when i open the lid hit the power button it does nothing at all.  Even holding the power button for multiple seconds to force shut down it does nothing.  Only way to get it to start up at that power is if i connect the charging cable.  I have tried reseting the smc multiple times with no results and pram(even though it doesnt have anything to do with start up problems just did it anyways).  It all started i last time i updated not completely sure what all updates i got but im still running 10.7.  It seems like a battery issue which would make sense since its nearly 3 years old and i use it extensivly.  Last thing that just started recently after i go threw the whole mess of getting it to start up if i pick it up or nudge it the thing will just shut off out of no where.  Almost like there is a short somewhere, cant really be sure if its linked with the waking up from sleep/start up problems but seems right up the same ally.  Any suggestions to what could be wrong would be greatly apreciated.  Im assuming my battery may be on its last leg but the thing still holds a charge and my battery life hasnt dimished at all so cant really be totally sure.  Thanks agian

Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. It may not fix the problem but it would be the first thing an Apple Store would do if you were to bring it to them with this complaint.
If bumping the Mac causes problems it's an intermittent internal connection that the SMC reset is not likely to help.
    Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
