******Leopard Software Update

Will Leopard have a *software update soon?* I love the interface of Leo, Spaces is wonderful and I enjoy working in several applications at once, but I'm having issues with:
DVD Studio Pro 3, Final Cut, AOL, iDVD, iWeb, just to name a few programs that are not working properly.

It's a two-way street. As in the past, Apple will add updates, but you should also be bugging the other software companies to make their ware Leopard compatible. It's not a matter of Leopard being compatible with other software, it's the other way around. Lot's of software is not compatible with Leopard.
I am sure that most manufacturers are busily working on these problems, but the first fixes will most likely come from the software companies one they have their own Leopards running for testing.
I guess the best I can say is to be patient, but I know that doesn't really help

  • Photoshop CS2 Error after Leopard Software Update

After installing the software update to fix the Keychain and blah blah blah my PS CS2 will no longer allow me to do ANYTHING. I can open it up and run it, open a file I'm working on and if I try to do anything it gives me an error message saying: "Could not complete your request because of a program error"
Any help? I really dont want to reinstall as it's an upgrade version and I'd have to reinstall CS again.
    Thanks,
    Mike

First thing I would do is boot from the Leopard Install disk and use Disk Utility to Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions.
If that doesn't work you might try deleting the PS CS2 preferences.
Note: Adobe does not require you to re-install the previous version when installing upgrade software, you only have to enter the old serial number.

  • Snow Leopard Software Update VERY slow

I'm running snow leopard 10.6.8 server and am having some very strange problems with my software updates.
I have all the settings set right (I believe) and I have made the adjustments to allow Lion clients to upgrade from it as well.
The problem I'm having is that when a client running either 10.6 or 10.7 is in the "checking for updates" portion of the update process it takes a very VERY long time to get the the next screen. The clients running 10.6 will show the bar going across at a snails pace for about 10-15 minutes then give the updates report showing my correct updates server at the top of the window.
The clients running 10.7 show the blue bar only going about 1/8-1/3 of the way in, then it stops, and sits there literally for hours before completing the check, then giving me the status and it also does show my correct update server.
I am connected through 1GB Ethernet from my clients to the server so that's not an issues and the speed is good when doing a file transfer. I can transfer 3GB to the server in less than 40 seconds, and pull that same 3GB back to the client in about 30 seconds. I can see and ping the update server. I can access the Xserve web site on my server... and the weird thing is it didn't always do this, it's only been the last month or so.
I have thought it might be a bad or corrupt OS so I reinstalled the OS and all services.
The clients are not managed by Microsoft AD & GP not by the apple servers.
As I said this used to be so much faster then using the apple servers in our organization, but now it's grossly slower then going out to the apple site.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thank you, Mike

Asking for the server by IP does mean you're avoiding a DNS lookup.
It doesn't mean that the target OS X Server box won't avoid errors due to a DNS server or network error, nor that any parallel connections that might be initiated at the client or at the server won't encounter DNS errors or network errors; whatever is going on here, and whatever is triggered by the initial IP-based access.
One of the DNS translations that can arise - even when the client is specifying an IP address - is on the remote end of the connection, when that system performs what is called a reverse look-up; translating the client IP address to the client IP name.  If there's a reverse translation arising and and if there's a DNS error or DNS timeout or a network error, then things will (still) be slow, even if the initial access was via IP.
If you're running a NAT'd private network, that means local DNS services are necessary and (at least to start with) no references to DNS servers off your NAT'd LAN.
If DNS services aren't quite right, the rest of the network stack gets flaky, and DNS errors look like delays, sluggist networks, and network errors.
There are most certainly other triggers for network slowness ranging from moisture in cables to WiFi interference to a truck that drove through the path of the WISP link, but DNS services are always a good potential culprit until proven otherwise.
Valid DNS services have become much like IP routing; a fundamental part of a modern IP network.  This particularly as distributed security, certificate-based encryption, user authentication and access delegation become more and more important within the network environment.

  • Snow Leopard software update log

I have enclosed a capture of my Snow leopard update software update log found in the "Apple menu" "system preferences"
You will noticed that Itunes did not have a version and never updated on my system. Can any one tell me what the update called "MBP17" is ?

Is your MacBook Pro a 17" model. Is it probably just some hardware specific module making a verbose print in your log as you ran that slew of updates. Note that it precedes an SMC update, so it first 'reads' your particular hardware to make the correct SMC update and that print is just a relic of that event. That's my guess.

  • Leopard Software Update Problem

I know that this issue has been addressed in other threads, BUT I can't find any that yield a solution to the problem that I have.
When I try to run the Software Updater, I get the following message:
The file “index-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog” couldn’t be found on the server “swscan.apple.com”.
My internet connection is obviously working fine, so I have a hard time believing that there is a hardware problem.
People have eluded to an update that fixed this issue, but I've gone up to 10.5.1 and I still have the exact same issue.
    Please help me resolve this!

I installed Leopard about 3 weeks (ish) ago, and I have been having his issue since the day I installed it.
One of the reasons I'm so concerned is because most people seem to have resolved this issue, but I still have it.
My updater doesn't even look for updates, as soon as it starts it gives me the error and I have to quit.

  • No Macbook or 17" Intel iMac Leopard Software Update

Apple has released iMac Software Update for both Tiger and Leopard.
As always, the release notes are a bit sparse and simply states that "this update provides important bug fixes and is recommended for 20-inch and 24-inch iMac models with 2.0, 2.4, or 2.8GHz processors." An analysis of the update packages indicates that updated graphics drivers have been delivered.
Some had hoped this would fix the intermittent Freezing problem that Apple had promised to address, but a couple of reports in our forums claim this problem persists even after applying the software update.
Really annoying the graphics haven't been improved for my 17" Intel iMac or Macbook its really sluggish. Does anyone know why? Is there one coming?

Yeah both have Intel graphics with 2 GB Ram. Installed on my friends 20" ATI graphics iMac and he had the same problem. Its not the actual system and apps which runs slow. Its things like the dock jerks as it comes up with magnification and general transitions and animation. This happens he when simply running finder. Never had this on Tiger. It was super smooth.

  • Leopard Software Update Server + Client

    Hello,
Now I have to use Mac OS X Tiger Server Software Update Server and OSX Tiger Client.
After installing OS X Tiger Server software update, I turned on the server and on apdaty do I download and have been prepared. OS X Tiger has found his client software update server, and everything worked.
Now I have OS X Leopard and Leopard Server Client.
Purely installed server and client purely installed. The server is running the server software update is downloaded updates. Leopard Client still download updates from the Internet and not from the local network and I do not know where the error. Why in the older version of all work without interference with the terminal and not now? Can someone please help me set the software update server to the client computers may not have anything set up and found this site automatically.
    Thank you
I apologize for my incorrect English

The Tiger systems must have some form of customization. SWU is not an auto-discover service. If you have one of the Tiger systems still available, enter both of these commands and report the results:
    defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate
    defaults read /Users/<adminusername>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate
Does either of the results return the custom CatalogURL value? If not, then look in NetInfo Manager and look at your MCX values. There may have been a managed preference set for all systems. However, if Tiger systems are not bound that this is not possible unless an niutil command was run to insert the value.
Also, keep in mind that if your Leopard systems are not bound to OD, and you have Apple Remote Desktop, you can use a Send Unix command and hit all of your systems in a matter of seconds. It is really rather trivial.
Also, were your Tiger machines imaged from a DMG or a NetInstall Server? It is possible that the SWU custom address was set in the master image. This is why it appears to "just work."

  • Setup assistant in loop after leopard software update

Installed leopard as an upgrade to Tiger on my new Imac when it was launched. I had no problems and everything has been runningfine. Last night I got informed of software updates available, I remeber seeing that one of the updates fwas for the system. I said ok. After a while I got a dialog saying updates required restart of system, hold power key until system turned off. I did so. The system rebooted into the setup assistant. I filled in the details required in each of the steps until I then hit done on the last page. At this point it just goes back to the beginning of the setup assistant again.I've tried this several times, inlcuidng turning off and starting the system again. I've tried holding down the C key at time of boot with the leopard disk in the drive to bbot from dvd and I still get the same symptons.
Very bad experience. Anyone else seen this and got a workaround. Can;t get through to apple support.
    Cheers
    Iain

I just ran into this nasty glitch on a mac mini running Leopard which I had just attempted to update using Software Update. The only package requiring a reboot was iTunes 7.6 which did FAIL to update along with one other package (I forget which). I told the system to reboot and gave authority to 'kick' others currently logged in. It complied and the screen went black, however there was no reboot sound....hmm...I held down the power button and still nothing. Then held it still longer and finally it rebooted...I logged in then immediately saw Setup Assistant. I was like "hmm...odd...this doesn't look good." After complying I clicked "Done" and then it logged me out (odd?), and then I logged in again only to find Setup Assistant greet me! So here I am..looking for answers on how to fix. Luckily I have SSH enabled and can login to the machine via SSH. Looking for a possible solution to run OS X Updater from command and possibly fix what's broken.

  • Leopard Software Updates Server goes insane

I erase installed our Xserve to Mac OS X Server v10.5.1. I tried to start the SUS (Software Update Server) with the old Tiger SUS store. It didn't seem to like it and began downloading all the updates again. Fair enough. I think the migration guide mentions that Leopard may do this. Next when all seemed well the SUS began deleting the index.sucatalog file. In fact it trashed the whole catalogs directory and begins downloading stuff again. I tried trashing everything in the SUS store (excluding the Leopard SoftwareUpdateServerStats executable) to get it to start from scratch but this didn't help. Got the exact same behaviour. I am loathed to cure the illness by killing the patient.
Here are some seemingly related error messages from the SUS log:
    2007-11-27 16:29:08.075 swupd_syncd46:3d17 ERROR: __CFURLCache::StepSQLStatement - step failed (exceed retry) - ErrCode: 5
    2007-11-27 16:29:10.064 swupd_syncd46:20b ERROR: __CFURLCacheSelectAndCreateResponse - failed to select, retry exceeded - ErrCode: 5
Anyone else ran into this? I'm not sure if this is a Leopard bug or if I have simply driven the service insane. I need to know how to reset it. I've had a brief look at the config files in in /etc/swupd but I'm not clear if something in here is screwed up. Submitted a call via email to AppleCare but so far no response.
    Thanks in advance.

For what its worth I'm seeing the same problem on our test 10.5.1 server. Although I'm getting the error without first trying to use the old tiger sus store. I'm seeing the same error messages you mentioned in my log. Software update from what I can tell has been trying to download the updates now for several days, always gets stuck on one (it varies most of the time, but the final cut pro 4.5 update has been a popular one lately), and then refuses to go any further. Stopping an restarting the software update server usually causes sus to erase what it has downloaded (to the /usr/share/swupd/html/content/downloads folder) and start over! Talk about killing my internet connection...I've been trying to be patient and just let it finish updating (so it will actually create the proper aliases in the /usr/share/swupd/html/content/catalogs folder) but it's never finishing. I've made it to about 8.8gb so far but I'm sure that's not the end. I've heard others mention that there is something in the neighborhood of 13gb of updates. Incidentally, according to server admin, all updates are copied and enabled, which of course is not true. Sorry I don't have a resolution, but hopefully through sharing our experiences we may be able to narrow down the problem.

  • Leopard Software Update 1.3 stops iMac from sleeping

I just applied the latest software update to Leopard (1.3) which is supposed to fix some freezing problems on 20 and 24 inch iMacs. I never had a freezing problem, but since applying this update, the sleep display feature does not work any more. Any attempt to sleep the Mac causes the hardware to sleep, but the monitor doesn't turn off. Whether I try using a hot spot to sleep the display or I go to the Apple menu and select sleep, the display refuses to turn off. (Interestingly, the OS is asleep, because the time in the upper right-hand corner does not change until I move the mouse and cause the computer to wake up).
Has anyone else been experiencing this behavior? Is it possible to uninstall a software update? I think I might want to do this until Apple resolves this bug...

I am having a similar problem. No matter what setting I have set up in system preferences, the display will go to screensaver and the hard drive shuts down afterwards. In tiger I would have the display go to sleep but keep the hard drive/computer still on. It is hard to overlook Leopards bugs.....

  • Are any Leopard Software Updates going to mess up my G4?

    Hey what's up everyone!
Got a Quad G4, just upgraded to Leopard.
I am very aware to skip the Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 because it wasn't meant for G4's only G5's.
Can any other fellow Macsters tell me what other Updates to skip?
Do you know if Apple made of a list of things not to Update if you have a G4?
    Any tips will be appreciated!
    Thanks everybody!
    - Chris

    Allan,
Last week I installed Leopard on my G4, then when I got to updating the Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 my computer when to a black screen after start up. Then I went here and search the keyword Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 and people where having the same issues. That's why I'm asking if anybody else knows what other updates that are not meant for G4's. There must be a list of updates that are not intend for G4's.
I just want to make sure becuz you know it's a Headache re-installing

  • Leopard software update not working?

When I click software update under the apple symbol, it does its thing and says there are updates for the computer but NEVER LISTS any? Why is this?

i haven't solved the problem - i created a new profile and SWU still doesn't show me what updates are available. the status bar appears for a couple of seconds but it doesn't finish searching for updates. this happened just yesterday, after i turned filevault on for the first time, so i thought that was related (figured it was a permission issue, as you said). but after turning filevault back off, SWU still doesn't work. suggestions?

  • Safari wont start after Leopard software update

After updating Leopard to 10.5.7, Safari wont start. I get an error message "Cant load Tastyapps AV plugin." or something to that effect.
    What gives? anyone know?

I was using Videobox as a trial version (on the site you have the option of buying or trying for 30 days). After the 30 days it stopped working and I just moved it to the trash. I seems to have left something in Safari however that causes it to not want to start.
Using Firefox i was able to go back to the Videobox site and download and install the trial version again. I was then given the option of installing the Safari plug in which i did. I then went to the Videobox menu and clicked on uninstall Safari plugin. and then i just moved videobox to the trash again using AppCleaner.
So, you should be able to do the same thing. Just click on "download" instead of "buy" on the Videobox site. I'm sorry, I couldnt find the plugin files for manual deletion either.
Maybe you should start a new thread and someone will know how to do that.
    Thanks!

How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. If updating:
    Download and install update(s)
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).

  • Software Update will not turn off

After upgrading to Leopard, software update persists and asks to update every 10 minutes. Unchecking 'Check Automatically' does not help (box becomes rechecked). This is a PowerBook G4 17". Is there a preference file that can be flushed somewhere?

i am having the same problem (software update version 3.0.1, MacBook version 2.1, OSX.5.2). and lately there is not even a software update available. I have never had this problem before, and it just started doing this about 3 weeks ago.
I have tried the solutions that have already been posted with no luck either.
