Leopard swap file options

hi,
Back in Panther days you could force the swap file location but it got mucked up and frightfully complicated in Tiger. I have ram to spare. Can you force the OS to ether:
A; never use a Swap file(I have 12 gb soon to be 16 GB EEC ram) or;
B; use a ram disk like you can do in Photoshop
C: Send it to a specific partition if it insists on not noticing it never runs out of ram.
That last part has always bugged me. I always ran Tiger on this machine previously and it was annoying seeing all that free ram at thje same time watching the Os merrily paging out chunks of itself.
So, in terms of preference, It would be nice to have a terminal command(bootup script that would forbid the OS from ever paging out anything. I am so far away from saturating the bus it is not even funny. I have watched it Boinc on all 4 processors and still have 4 gb of Ram sitting idle.

It is time for Apple to fix that performance whole. Why sell machines that have max out slots with far more memory then the machine can ever use even at full tilt.
They have made great strides in the memory use department with the Mac Pro.
OS X only uses a set amount of memory, and then goes to virtual memory.
A lot of this is to allow other applications to use/have access to the RAM, rather than having the OS hogging it all.
There is no user control for this, short of hacking the memory allocation process within the BSD.
Just keep plenty of free space on the boot drive for the OS to run properly, and have a second scratch drive for PS and pro apps to use to run properly.

  • Fusion Drive & Swap files

From time to time on my new Mac Mini with 1 TB Fusion Drive, I am getting the following error: "Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory."
This would indicate an issue with being able to write swap files/virtual memory. If I understand how the Fusion Drive works, the virtual memory is stored on the 128 GB SSD portion.  The SSD is full, considering I have 650 GB free on the 1.128 TB Fusion Drive.
Seems like a CoreStorage issue, as it's apparently not leaving enough space on the SSD for the swap files after the computer has been run for a while. I have 16 GB RAM in the Mini.
Restarting the computer solves the issue, although I often use the Mini in remote sessions and when this error comes up, performance on the Mini tends to be so sluggish that sometimes remote connections time out or drop, making it hard to even be able to restart the computer.

Your problem is excessive swapping of data between physical memory and virtual memory.
That can happen for two reasons:
You have a long-running process with a memory leak (i.e., a bug), or
You don't have enough memory installed for your usage pattern.
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination. In Activity Monitor, select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Click the heading of the  Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more memory over time without ever releasing it.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details:

  • Problem with swap files after reboot.

    Hello
    I have installed Solaris 10 10/09 s10x_u8wos_08a on a Sun Fire X4140.
    The file system is UFS.
I wish to add more swap space
I have created these two files under /export/home:
    -rw------T 1 root root 5368709120 Jun 16 10:12 newswap
    -rw------T 1 root root 2147483648 Jun 16 10:38 newswap2
When I enter swap -a /export/home/newswap, the command succeeds and I can see the additional swapspace with swap -l.
I have the following configuration in /etc/vfstab
    # cat /etc/vfstab
#device device mount FS fsck mount mount
#to mount to fsck point type pass at boot options
    fd - /dev/fd fd - no -
    /proc - /proc proc - no -
    /dev/dsk/c1t5d0s1 - - swap - no -
    /dev/dsk/c1t5d0s0 /dev/rdsk/c1t5d0s0 / ufs 1 no -
    /dev/dsk/c1t5d0s7 /dev/rdsk/c1t5d0s7 /export/home ufs 2 yes -
    /export/home/newswap - - swap - no -
    /export/home/newswap2 - - swap - no -
    /devices - /devices devfs - no -
    sharefs - /etc/dfs/sharetab sharefs - no -
    ctfs - /system/contract ctfs - no -
    objfs - /system/object objfs - no -
    swap - /tmp tmpfs - yes -
Although it is supposed to work, after reboot, the only mounted swap file is /dev/dsk/c1t5d0s1.
The two file under /export/home aren't mounted as swap. Why?
Can anybody give me some help on this issue?
    Thanks

Actually you don't have to create a dedicated slice/filesystem for swap.
You can create files and then use them as swap.
Here is the link from the documentation of Solaris
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-5093/fsswap-59089?a=view
My issue is that although I have configured /etc/vfstab according to the documentation, the swap files aren't automatically mounted on boot. I can only mount them as swap manually with swap -a.
    Can anybody help?

  • Swap Files on external HD via Time Machine?

Two weeks ago I bought a new iMac:
Been having some fairly seriously issues with Leopard, but the most perplexing one is a Swap file that was backed up via Time Machine, I'm assuming, as it's on my external HD:
    Western Digital
    Capacity: 465.64 GB
    Available: 356.04 GB
    Writable: Yes
    File System: Journaled HFS+
    BSD Name: disk1s3
    Mount Point: /Volumes/My Book
In a folder outside of the Backups.backupdb folder--as viewed from the finder window--is a Private folder, which inside looks like this:
    private
    tmp
    tempVM
    vm
    swapfile0
    The swapfile is 64mb
Any ideas on how this got there? Why it's there? Why my iMac would be swapping with 4GB RAM, and only using 24% of a 320GB HD?
Also it takes forever to open and close apps, restart, 15 to 45 seconds of blue screen before OS starts to load, jerky video, kernel panics, privileges errors, thread crashes, you name it.

I have the same on my Western Digital with my MacBook Pro.
My wife's iMac uses a Seagate and the private folder does not exist.
    Thoughts?

  • High swap file utilization - 11g on windows 2003 x64

    Hi,
I'm running database 11.1.0.6 patch set 10 on
    Windows Server 2003 x64 standard
HP DL380 dual quad core + 8GB RAM
    2 x 72GB 15K SAS mirror for OS
    6 x 72GB 15k SAS RAID-5 for data + logs (i know ideally logs need to move to a RAID-1 set etc)
    dedicated mode
database is about 10GB (main set of tables about 1GB)
SGA + PGA 4GB (auto memory management)
server has been set to network application mode such that less mem is allocated to the system cache etc.
Large Page support has been enabled (not confirmed if this is working, any ideas how to?)
Looking at the page faults and page out perf mon stats it looks too high/ too much given the arrangement above. The majority of the page faults are coming from the Oracle.exe process. But I cannot explain why specially if Large Page is setup then the SGA etc should be locked in to RAM as I understand.
side note I was seeing similar behaviour on the older 10.2.0.1 DB that had same mem config for the same set of data.
    Any ideas people?
    Thanks

    JA,
On the server, open Task Manager and then select the Processes tab. Make certain that it is configured to show the Page Faults column and click on the entry for the Oracle instance so that it is highlighted. Then, open a command prompt and start SQL*Plus with the /NOLOG command line parameter. Make note of the current value of Page Faults and then connect to the database instance using SQL*Plus using the SYS user account (or some other account). You will probably find that the Page Faults value jumped by about 302 as a result of the login, and the value just might jump again when you disconnect from the database. Keep in mind that each session connecting to an Oracle instance running on Windows will require at least 1MB of memory immediately on connection as an additional thread is created (assuming shared server is not used). If each memory page were 4KB in size (as is the standard in Windows), there would likely be at least 256 (1MB / 4KB) page faults for each login, and possibly the same amount per disconnect. With this in mind, I am not so certain that 500 page faults per second is a high value for a Oracle process running on Windows if users/applications are constantly connecting and disconnecting from the Oracle database instance.
To determine if there is a performance problem caused by memory utilization, what you may want to do is take a look at the PF Usage value on the Performance tab of Task Manager. This is NOT the page file usage, regardless of the warnings that appear in Enterprise Manager - this is total memory allocation including RAM and swap file usage. There is an interesting thread where I discovered the actual meaning of PF Usage here:
    http://groups.google.com/group/comp.databases.oracle.server/browse_thread/thread/b62c4d761cace2a6
If the PF Usage is considerably less than the amount of the RAM in the server (8GB RAM -> PF near 7GB is OK), you will likely be OK, as long as you do not attempt to move multi-gigabyte files around - doing so could cause short term memory starvation issues for Oracle. You might want to verify that the File and Printer Sharing option of the network card is set to "Maximize throughput for network applications" so that Windows will limit the memory used for file caching.

  • Performance: swap space vs. swap file?

After install of Red Hat Linux ES 3.0 UL3, I found that the swap space is set to only 2 GB. The SA claims that to increase the swap space, he must reinstall Linux because the partition is full.
Another option would be to add a swap file to a free partition.
Are there any issues with having swap files vs. swap space?

You should be able to use the free partition as swap space as well, without reinstall of Linux.

There are two partitions on the drive... one for the OS and one for users.
The OS has an 80gig Partition with 50% free space.
The User partition is much more with about 75% free space.
In the past I have noticed Photoshop to be using over 8gig of RAM so maybe it is photoshop.

There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory and virtual memory. That can happen for two reasons:
You have a long-running process with a memory leak (i.e., a bug), or
You don't have enough memory installed for your usage pattern.
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The process named "Safari Web Content" renders web pages for Safari and other applications. It uses a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider it a prime suspect.
See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

  • Swap files shortly after startup

    Hello everyone
    I have a MacBook 13" late 2008, 250g HD, 4g RAM
I have an unusual problem - within minutes (literally 2 or 3) after starting up the machine and opening my stock apps (Firefox, Thunderbird, Word and iCal), my system spawns 2 or more swap files (128 or 256 megs), despite there being more than 2g RAM still free. I find this unusual as it doesn't make sense to use virtual memory on my hard drive in preference to available RAM.
The reson that it is actually an issue for me is that Word (Office 11, vers 14.1.4) then becomes unusuable when swap files are present.  It can take 1 minute (timed) between clicking on a Word file and it opening in Word. Closing can take up to 30 seconds. There are no lags when no swap files are present, but the presence of  swap files requires a restart if I need to use Word, and using Word after the restart until the swap files are spawned.
All software (system and 3rd party) are current.  I have looked in the Console logs but can't find any mention of virtual memory/swap files being spawned.
Any ideas? After several months, the preferred option is a large hammer into the laptop. It is usable in short bursts only if I have to use Word (and I do have to use Word to be compatible with my contractors etc)
Any ideas would be appreciated. Zeroing the drive is the absolute last option, and I have installed Lion and the combo updates a number of times, ditto Office 2011. Has anyone else seen this very strange behaviour?

    EJW Tas wrote:
Interesting result from Activity Monitor is that Spotlight (mds) is using 100m of real memory but 2gigs of VM - I suspect that Spotlight is responsible for the extra swapfiles, perhaps as a result of a corruped index file?
    That is suspicious.
The structure of Spotlight indexes was changed in Lion; you may have noticed it re-indexed everything when you upgraded.  It actually created a whole new index on every volume, internal and external.  There doesn't seem to be a major problem, but we do see occasions where the index gets corrupted, slowing down other indexing.  This is especially noticeable when the OSX drive is being indexed, and Time Machine is doing a backup, which also needs indexing.  The backup sometimes slows to a crawl, or even a virtual hang, until the OSX volume is done/fixed/excluded.  I wonder if you may have a similar situation here, but affecting the data for some of your apps instead.
Do you have any other disks connected?  If so, exclude them from indexing temporarily, via System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy. See what happens after a Restart.
If not, or if that doesn't change, do the same with your internal HD.
That may provide an actual clue!

  • Trigger File Option in SFTP Advantco Sender Adapter

    Hi ,
What is the purpose of Trigger file option in sender SFTP adapter? When i enabled Advance selection for source file we have this functionality. Can i use this option to delete the multiple files in the same directory instead of using File Name Mask.
We have scenario to delete 4 files from application server in that only one file should be sent to partner and the rest should be delete from application server.
Actual solution is to use to use script to delete the rest of the files do we have any other alternative.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Another alternativet is to write your own customer adapter module and using java programming you can delete remaining 3 files. This is bit complex comapre to script writing but one advantage is with adapter module is that, you can provide the deteted file names with time stamp in the audit log of XI message, which will help in troublshooting if some issue happens.

This issue is fixed in Latest Support Package Versions.
Which Version of Support Package you are using?
If EP6 <SP19 you will face this issue.
Just upgrade it to EP6, Support Pack-19,this will be resolved.

  • Is it safe to have the swap file on a separate partition?

I've just bought a second hand MBP 2012 (9,2 I think) with a 500GB hard drive and Yosemite pre-installed. Not going to get into a debate about it here, but I want to regress to Lion or Mountain Lion until Apple improves Yosemite's bugs and software manufacturers improve compatibility. However, I wouldn't mind also getting to know Yosemite. So my plan is to partition my drive and keep Yosemite on one partition, have Lion on the other, and use Lion for day to day stuff for the time being.
Obviously this involves a shrinking hard drive. I have an image of Lion's installer on another partition in case I lose the DVD (which happens to me far too often), so at the moment my partition scheme breaks down as 10GB for Mountain Lion's installer, 100GB for Yosemite, and the remaining 390 (roughly) for Mountain Lion.
Since the Yosemite partition is quite small, would it work if I made a symlink from /private/var/vm to the same folder on the Lion partition? Both folders will never be in use at the same time, so I can't think of any reason this wouldn't work - which would mean that the slippage and the swap files would all be located on the bigger partition, and the small size of my Yosemite partition wouldn't be a problem. Obviously when the time comes I would get rid of the Mountain Lion partition altogether and make the Yosemite one a lot bigger, but would that be an ok setup for now? Would it degrade performance for any reason if the swap files were on a separate partition?
    Anyone ever tried this?

Thanks for the answer. The project is stored, saved, or burned to a DVD.
When I put the burnt DVD in my "E" drive (or DVD player/burner) installed in my computer it comes up as a my project in "E" drive.
It is a complete Primire Pro CS4 project. I has all my edits and effects just like it does when I open it from my HHD.
I can put the DVD in my wives computer and it shows it is there but it will not open because she does not have CS4 installed.
So it is not a movie. It is an exact copy of what the project looks like on my HHD.
I can edit on it and do everything I did from the HHD copy.
Hope this helps. Please feel free to question my responces.
I really do want to clean up my HHD and start over with a single file. Hopefully gererated by the DVD.
It seems like I could delete my files. It would be like I made this copy and sent it to you to do a final edit and add menus. You would not have the origional files on your HHD.
After you loaded to you could then send it to your HHD and do whatever - Right?

  • LSMW, Step - Specify Files option

    Dear Experts,
Please explain the details at Specify files options in LSMW
I want to know about following options -
    1) Legacy data on PC (Front end)
    2) Legacy data on the R/3 server (Application Server)
    3) Imported data File for imported data (Application server)
    4) Converted data File for converted data (Application server)
    5) Wild card value Value of wild card ' * * in file name.
    Thanks in advance

    1) Legacy data on PC (Front end)
-- defines that SAP shall find and upload the source file from your PCs Harddrive (can as well be a network drive)
    2) Legacy data on the R/3 server (Application Server)
-- defines that the source file is to be found in the file system of your SAP system
I use this often when we merge SAP systems, so I can send IDOCs from old SAP system to new SAP system and output the IDOCs directly as file. This file can then be found in on the SAP application server. (you can display the SAP directories with AL11 transaction)
    3) Imported data File for imported data (Application server)
    - this is the internal file LSMW writes the data to when it uploads from PC or application server.
    4) Converted data File for converted data (Application server)
    - this is the internal file LSMW writes the data  to when it converts from imported data file using the mapping rules.
    5) Wild card value Value of wild card ' * * in file name.
    - This allows you to use to use the same LSMW for many many similar files (e.g. if you migrate materials and you get extra files from each company) without the need to change the above entered names.
